Chapter 2

Sam heard his brother coming before he saw him. It was always the way.

The impala's distinct roar woke him up from his thoughts. They were all revolving around the play. In Act two there was an awkward scene when he had to tell Beverley that he still had feelings for her. The playwright had played what he thought was a cruel trick on him. He hated Vince so much. Who did he think he was? It was a stupid play and he was not sure he wanted a part of it any longer. Sam was sure that Vince "stupid two bit' shit writer" had done it on purpose. Beverley was played by Sue, his secret crush and any verbal or physical contact would make him turn a shade of red not yet seen on Mars. He put those feelings to the side for a moment as Dean stopped and waited for him to climb in. Sam could not help feeling a burst of pride when he noticed other students eyeing the glistening black wonder car. He also noticed with a degree of annoyance that some kids were eyeing up his brother too. Why did Dean have to rev up the engine and lean out of the window with that cocky grin on his face? Sam was fed up.

"Hurry up squirt. I haven't got all day ya'know" Dean grabbed hold of an empty McDonald's wrapper and threw it at him playfully.

"Quit the crap Dean!" Sam whispered as he settled in the shotgun position.

"Have you had a shit day at school little' brov?"

"Leave me alone Dean I've got things on my mind"

"Like what. PMT?"

"Oh shut up!" Sam could not help grinning a little at that brotherly quip. Dean always made him feel better. He was a goof ball' but he had this way of making shit situations more bearable.

The ride back to the motel after the banter with Sammy allowed Dean the luxury of thinking about Ange. How was he going to get the opportunity to talk to her? Dad wanted to leave. If dad wanted to leave. They were all leaving. You did not mess with dad's orders. You did not mess with hunting priorities. This was the only time he had ever come close to wanting to bail out. It worried him. All at once like a flash of inspirational lightening Dean had a plan…

"Sammy?"

"Yeah"

"I need you to lie to dad for me".

Sam went white faced at that unbelievable announcement. Dean had never asked him to lie. Ever. There had been moments when Dean had begged him to be economical with the truth but never a blank faced lie.

"Why?" Sam turned towards Dean with a concerned look on his face.

"It's complicated but there's something that means a lot to me. I need to see Ange and talk to her."

Sam knew all about Ange. Boy! Did he know about Ange. His brother had gone on and on about this gal' and he was fed up with hearing her name, let alone get himself in dad's bad books.

"Dean I don't know what you are doing? … Don't you know that dad will be all over you like white on rice? Dude he's going to kill me if I lie about something' like that and he's going to kill ya' twice for getting' me involved. He always knows when we're up to something dude. Why Dean?"

"He wants to leave."

"Now?"

"Yeah."

"He can't. I'm the lead in the school play!" Sam shouted out with righteous indignation.

"Dad doesn't give a shit about your play Sammy!"

"Don't call me Sammy!"

At that point Dean interrupted his little brother and stopped the car in a layby.

"I need one hour Sammy. Just one hour." Dean did not want to beg but Sam understood the urgency of what his brother wanted.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Tell dad that I've got a flat tyre. Run to the motel. Tell him that I'm dealing with it and will be back as soon as it's done. He knows that I can handle that. He taught me how to deal with a puncture, he knows it takes time…he'll understand… I'll let you go on ahead. Take my mobile phone. He'll see that the battery is flat…"

Sam did not think long. He had his brother's back.

"Ok Dean I'll do it. You know the ol' man will smell a rat don't you?"

"Yeah…I know… but it's worth it dude. Thanks Sam."

Sam punched his stupid brother on the shoulder and started to run in the direction of their motel. It would take him about fifteen minutes to get there and then the shit would probably hit the fan but…there is nothing that would stop him giving his big brov' a break. He thought back, as he run, to that time when Dean had laid across that railway line. Dad could be understanding…hum…maybe yes… maybe not. His brother always did crazy things but he was never afraid. He took it on the chin!

Sam ruefully thought that this might be the conclusion to this dumb ass stupid idea.
