Chapter 2

Olivia carefully and quietly entered Reid's room, it had become late and she wanted to check his vitals. A well-built, handsome, black man she recognised as Agent Morgan was on the chair by Reid's bedside, seemingly asleep. Olivia picked up Reid's charts and read them over before adding his latest vitals.

"I know you." Derek's voice startled her and she quickly spun around to look at him. "Sorry, light sleeper. Blame the job." He held up his hands innocently, a small smile gracing his handsome features.

"I am Doctor Boswell." She introduced herself politely, returning his smile with one of her own.

"Oh, you're Doctor Boswell!" He sat up in his seat, rubbing his eyes. "We heard you were one of the driving forces that kept pretty boy alive." He looked over to Reid whose eyes were still shut.

"Oh, it wasn't just me…" She replied humbly, putting the chart back on the railing of Reid's bed.

"I just wanted to say thank you. I don't know what I would have done if he had died." Sadness showed in his eyes as his eyes remained on his fellow agent.

"You have been here a long time." Olivia noted.

"So have you." Derek replied, a smirk appearing on his face.

"Ah, touché! Though, seeing as this is my job it is a little different." Olivia said after a small laugh escaped her lips.

"No, you are here because you care for your patients, not because you are on shift." Olivia's eyebrows furrowed in a frown at what he said.

"How did you –"

"I am a profiler with the FBI. Reading people is one of my best talents." Morgan explained before he sat back, rubbing his tired eyes.

"You should get some rest." Olivia observed him. He was shattered and worn out, still wore the same clothes he did before.

"I will, once he is awake. The others… they have all their own lives, children, partners. So I said I'd stay." He answered, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. Olivia nodded in understanding. It was very selfless of him and they all seemed really close. Almost like a family.

A low groan erupting from the bed which got both their attention.

"Spence?" Derek said softly, quickly getting up from his seat to stand by his side.

"Doctor Reid, I am Doctor Boswell, can you hear me?" Olivia also rushed to his side, watching his face patiently.

"Yes. Ugh, my head." Spencer groaned as his eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the little light in the room. "Where am I?"

"You're at Healthstone Hospital, Spence. You will be okay." Derek reassured him as he placed a hand on his shoulder. "I will just let the other's know you're awake. I will be back." With that he ushered out of the room, his hand reaching for his mobile.

"I am just going to check your pupils' reaction, okay." She shone her small torch in his eyes, inspecting them closely. He groaned lowly. "I am going to page neuro and they will check your reflexes. I will also arrange for some painkillers to be administered to make you comfortable."

Morgan entered the room, a happy bounce in his walk.

"I will leave you to it now. I will check in in the morning." Olivia smiled at them both as she excused herself.

The next morning arrived sooner than Olivia wanted to. After the day she had had she felt too tired to drive home and decided to sleep in one of the on-call rooms. After stretching she stood up and got changed into her scrubs and then put on her lab coat over the top. Darting out of the on-call room she found the nearest bathroom to have a quick wash, sprayed some deodorant and brushed her hair, braiding it to the side afterwards. Once she was ready she exited the bathroom and made way to meet Doctor Howards.

"Ah, Doctor Boswell, there you are!" the brunette petite woman smiled up at her. My shift started two hours ago and I caught up with your patients from yesterday. I am just waiting for the minions to start rounds."

Olivia snorted at her nickname for the interns. "Speaking of, Doctor Kemp was very impressive during your day off yesterday. He even managed to speak independently to a patient's friends about surgery and the next steps." Olivia commended.

"Huh, no way! I am impressed. He always seemed so shy." Doctor Howards replied, impressed by the news.

"Yes, he did well under pressure. A good student to a good teacher." Olivia smiled brightly at the second year resident who had taken an interest in cardiothoracic surgery.

Doctor Kemp and Doctor Bernard arrived soon after and they begun rounds. Entering Reid's room they found it full of people, all of his team had come back to see how he was doing.

"Good morning everyone." Olivia greeted everyone with a smile before putting her focus on Spencer. "How are you feeling?"

"I, uh, I feel fine." He replied looking at all the different doctors in the room.

"Doctor Kemp, please begin." Olivia nodded to the intern.

"Uh, this is Doctor Spencer Reid, 28, yesterday he was in an incident in which he became severely hypothermic. Abdominal CPR was performed in order to provide him with better circulation which has resulted in some abdominal bruising and three fractures ribs."

"Doctor Bernard, please carry on." Olivia nodded at the other intern.

"To warm him more efficiently and keep the blood pumping it was decided to put him bypass and later on his heart was successfully revived. He is currently on morphine to ease the pain. Neuro have confirmed that his reflexes are really good and there does not appear to be any brain damage." The other intern informed everyone, her blue eyes taking a quick glance at the chart.

"That's very good. I will just check you over now, is that alright Doctor Reid?" Olivia's green eyes looked at him questioningly as she side stepped past his colleagues to get to his bedside. "What will I be looking for, Doctor Kemp?"

"You will check for any abnormalities in the abdominal bruising as well as his heart."

"Very well. Doctor Howards that will be all. You can continue rounds without me while I check up on Doctor Reid." She dismissed the group of younger doctors before she turned back to Spencer.

"Guys, I love you all but is there any way this can be done more privately." He cleared his throat as he looked between the other agent, somewhat embarrassed.

"Uh, I was just about to go get a coffee anyway." Emily said, leading the way for everyone to leave.

"Ah yes, canteen coffee is just what I ordered." Rossi agreed somewhat sarcastically as he followed behind. "Also, did he just say 'love'? Those meds must be good."

"Alright, let's have a look then." Olivia smiled reassuringly at him as she lifted his gown to inspect his abdomen. Pressing onto it, Spencer winced. "My apologies." Olivia shot him an apologetic look as she continued inspecting him. Spencer's hazel eyes watched her intently, noticing the little freckles across her cheeks and nose, the way her lips slightly parted while she was concentrating.

"Okay, now if you could sit up for me, please. I can see your heart rate on the screen but I just want to have a listen." She explained as she reached out to support him. He sat up and looked at her as she adjusted her stethoscope, pressing the base of it gently to his chest as she listened carefully.

"Could you cough for me?" She requested and he did so, his eyes still fixated on her face.

"You're very beautiful." Olivia's green eyes widened and found Spencer's, her lips spreading into a wide smile. Spencer's own eyes widened, as a blush crept up his neck and he quickly averted his gaze.

"I see the morphine is working well."

"I'm sorry, I, uh. I am not, I don't know what –"

"Do not worry, Doctor Reid." Olivia reassured him before she moved to place the stethoscope on his back. Listening intently again, she couldn't help the small smile that remained.

"Okay. All seems well. We will keep you in for observations a couple of days and then you will be good to go." She informed him as she placed her stethoscope around her neck. "Though I am sure that your friends will keep you company so you won't be all bored." She added with a smile.

"Yes. Yes, they are great." He agreed with a nod, a small smile gracing his lips as he leant back in his bed. He sighed contently, the morphine keeping him comfortable.

Olivia looked down abruptly as her pager beeped. She looked up at him and excused herself before she made her way to the ER.

"Sh, be quiet! He may be asleep!" Spencer heard Penelope lecture someone behind the door before she quietly entered the room. Who would have thought that she of all people could open a door so quietly.

"Ah, you're still awake!" she exclaimed as the rest of the group entered the room.

"Hey buddy boy, how are you feeling?" Derek smiled as he walked towards Reid bed.

"Hello." Spencer replied simply as he sat up in his bed.

"So, check this out! I know you can read, like, a billion books in a day so as I can't carry so many books I got you this!" She pulled a kindle out of her bag. "It has loads of different books you can download on it."

Spencer smiled widely at her gesture. Although he enjoyed the flicking of a page and an old-fashioned book more, this would certainly keep him occupied. "Thank you so much, Garcia!" He inspected it curiously. Yes, this would certainly do.

Her phone then started to ring and she excused herself before exiting the room.

Derek looked at him, the guilt still eating him up on the inside. "I should have never left you to wander the factory by yourself."

"It's not your fault." Spencer shook his head. "I should have been more alert."

"Hey, if I can't blame myself then you can't either." Derek said in a jokingly, yet serious manner.

"I got those flowers you wanted, Spence." JJ interrupted as she entered the room with a bunch of colourful flowers. Derek turned from JJ to Spencer with raised eyebrows. Spencer became flustered. "They're not for me." He quickly defended himself.

"Hey, I am not judging!" Derek raised both his hands in defence before he looked at his phone, having just received a text from Hotch. JJ did the same and Spencer shifted uncomfortably.

"New case huh?" He asked, his lips pressed together in a thin line, knowing he wouldn't be able to go.

"We will see you as soon as we get back, promise." JJ reassured him with an apologetic look that matched Derek.

"We won't be long, kid."
