Mia sat on top of a roof staring at the stars, the sun slowly vanished behind the horizon. She flicked one of her stubby arms and a small arc of purple energy shot out, sailing through the sky. She felt calm here. No fighting, no crowded gardens, no zombies. Just peace and quiet. She wished that she could stay here, but-
"Mia! We're needed!" Her friend, Phillip, called from the ground. Mia groaned and jumped down. She landed in front of Phillip, a peashooter wearing a banged up cowboy hat. Mia, on the other hand, was a nightcap, a small, mushroom ninja. Being female, she dressed different, having a massive red mushroom cap on her head and a purple scarf over her mouth. Although even without the scarf, no one could see her face since it was obscured by shadow, two pink eyes shining in the dark. Mia sighed and said, "What for?" Phillip just shrugged.
"The Kernel just said he needed to see us." He replied. Mia nodded and followed the peashooter back to base.
The sun was completely gone when the two plants returned to a barn they called their base. All around it where other plants, peashooters, sunflowers, snap dragons, etc. A male nightcap, who had a much flatter mushroom cap on his head, a black cape and a visible face, guarded the door inside. Upon seeing Philip, he nodded and opened the door. Inside Kernel Corn awaited.
"Ah, good." He said. He was your average corn but had several medals pinned to his stalk and a soldier helmet stolen from a zombie footsoldier on his head.
"Sir." Mia and Phillip said, saluting. The Kernel nodded and spoke, saying, "Sergeant Phillip. Mia. You are both being assigned a escort mission. A trusted Sunflower named Major Sweetie has sent a commando with valuable information about the zombies' new plan of attack. I want you two to escort him to here. I trust this will be successful mission, right?"
"Yes, sir." Phillip replied. "We'll get this done."
"Very good. Dismissed." Kernel Corn said. The two plants turned and left.
A FEW HOURS LATER...
Mia was getting tired. She normally be sleeping now but yet, here she was, in the middle of the night, searching for a plant she didn't even know.
"So," She yawned. "Any luck, Phil?" She turned to Philip, who was on top of a bus.
"No plant here!" He called. He then turned the other way and said, "Not there either." He jumped down and shook his head.
"We've been search for HOURS now!" Mia complained.
"Yeah." Phillip agreed. Mia sighed and turned around. Something caught her eye and she squinted to see it.
"Uh...am I just seeing things due to lack of sleep or is there A HUMAN OUTSIDE?!" She gasped. Philip followed the nightcap's stare and said, "You're not seeing things. What the heck is he doing outside in the first place?!"
James was nervous to leave his house. Zombies scared him, go figure, but his mom needed those headache meds. He took a breath, readied himself, and opened the door. Stepping out, he looked around and continued walking. James crept through the empty streets, remembering the path to the pharmacy. After walking for a while, James heard a groan and stopped, fearing the worst. Whirling around, he saw a zombie in a brown coat, blue, ripped jeans and a dirty cone on his head.
"Uhhh….Brainz?" He groaned. James panicked and ran for a nearby phone booth to hide in. He stumbled and tripped, landing on the road with a THUMP. He looked back to see the undead man standing above him. James stared, frozen in fear as the zombie reached out a hand and WA-BAM! James opened his eyes to see the zombie, headless, stumbling around before running and crashing into a trash can. He looked over to see two plants staring at him in a fighting position. He heard rumors from his sister that the reason the zombies haven't taken over Neighborville yet was because of sentient plants but never did believe her. she was young, after all. He slowly stood up and said a shaky "Thank you." The mushroom shaped plant nodded and said, "Beempa!"
"Uh...what?" James replied, confused. The two plants exchanged looks before the mushroom tried again.
"Beempa? Weee-hoi shaka?" It said.
"I...I don't understand."
"Son of a-mmmmmgh! He doesn't understand us!" Mia shouted angrily. She turned to Philip.
"What are we going to do now? We're stuck out here with a human in zombie infested area. We might as well scream at the top of our lungs, 'LOTS OF BRAINS RIGHT HERE!' This was YOUR idea to go save him!" She said. Phillip thought for a moment before saying, "Well, we can't leave him here. Maybe we escort him back to base? The Kernel will know what to do. It's our best shot." Mia nodded and grabbed the human's hand.
"C'mon human." She said, tugging on his arm. The two plants lead the human to their farm/base, the distant sound of zombies echoing throughout the night.
After walking for a while, James decided to speak up.
"Do….you...understand me?" He asked. The mushroom didn't acknowledge him but the green plant wearing a cowboy hat turned and nodded.
"And you can't speak English?" James said. The green plant shook his head. James stayed silent until he reached a farm. A dirt path stretched out from the sidewalk and lead to a massive barn. All around the barn were plants. Many plants. James saw some obvious ones like sunflowers, a cactus and an acorn and some not so obvious ones, like a purple plant with a bulb shaped head and a mouth filled with sharp teeth. everyone was looking at him, some whispering to others in a language he couldn't understand. James was lead inside the barn and saw a cornstalk with a helmet and medals. The two plants escorting James saluted, said something and the corn nodded. He eyed James before waving one of his stalks forward. A cactus holding some kind of device walked up and handed the machine to the corn, who seemed to be in charge. The corn fastened the device to his neck and spoke actual words James could understand.
"Well, looks like we've got ourselves a VIP guest." He said in a gruff, but kind voice. "What's your name, kid?"
"James, Mr..."
"Call me Kernel Corn or just Corn." The corn replied. "Anyway, James. What brings you to the outside world?"
"Well, Kernel, I-" Suddenly James remembered. "Oh, shoot! The medicine! I left my house to get my mom some medication. She came down with a cold shortly after all this started." Kernel Corn nodded and, after a moment, said, "Well, James. I think we can help you. Austin!" The cactus returned and spoke to the corn.
"Get more two more of these translators you made." Kernel Corn said. The cactus, who's name was Austin, nodded and rushed off. He later returned with two of the same devices Kernel Corn was wearing.
"I can send the two plants who brought you here, Mia and Phillip, to help your mom and take your family to a refugee center in the public gym some of our human friends have set up." Kernel Corn said. Austin handed the mushroom and green plant the devices and they put them on.
"Let's go, James." The mushroom said, pointing to an RV. "We don't got all day."
Phillip ran ahead and found the RV called Penny and prepare to fly. Penny was created by Crazy Dave, a human the plants adopted as their leader. She could fly, time travel and act as a simply transport. Once James and Mia reached Penny, Phillip was already powering up the RV.
"Alright Penny, we're heading to the refugee center, making a quick stop at a pharmacy and James' house."
"CALCULATING DISTANCE...CROSS PLOTTED. We can take off now." Penny replied in a robotic female voice.
"Wait..." James said. "This talks...and flies?"
"Yes, I can speak and flying, James." Penny answered. "I suggest you put on your seatbelt though. I've not been programed with the smoothest of flying abilities" The RV took off and flew away.
Dr Edgar George Zomboss sat in his chair overseeing the daily life of Zomburbia, the portion of Neighborville that he ruled with an undead iron fist. His undead minions patrol the streets as those he didn't send to fight rushed to work in the Z-Tech factories all over the place. He smiled to himself, enjoying his rule and the total obedience of his minions. A zombie scientist walked into the room, interupting Zomboss' thoughts.
"Zir, the machine iz ready for tezting." It moaned. Dr Zomboss turn to face the scientist and said, "Very good, Doctor. Bring out the test subjects." The zombie nodded and left the room. Dr Zomboss laughed. If this worked, he would be undefeatable.
