You and Remus hung out a lot over the summer between Fifth and Sixth year. He only found out you lived nearby his own house in the little village he grew up in when he had to do a History of Magic project with you back in April and was able to get to know you a bit.
He was really fun to be around, always cracking joke after joke and telling you endless stories about him and his friends. During the time you spent together you noticed you'd been feeling differently about the boy than you had before, and it threw you off, but you managed to accept them and move on. But you soon discovered that moving on wasn't that easy.
When you got back to school he was acting differently towards you. It upset you, honestly, but you didn't have much time to ask about it because you were in Hufflepuff and he was in Gryffindor. You only had so many classes together.
He stopped all communication between the two of you about a week into the school year. It hurt you because, of course you had other friends, but he was just easier to talk to about the difficult things. He helped you understand what you were feeling and why you felt that way, and then he would cheer you up.
When you did spend time with him during the year it was mostly due to professors forcing you to pair up because they didn't want people slacking off with their friends by letting them choose who they'll team up with. But even then he still only talked to you about the projects and never said a word to you outside of it.
The weather got colder and so did Remus, it seemed. He was ghosting you, and it bothered you severely.
You'd had enough. It's been months and he still hasn't said anything to you. You'd heard from one of your Gryffindor friends that, even with the possibility of rain, Remus was going to spend his time outside today so that's where you were headed.
You saw him sitting against a tree with a book in his hands, like you usually did. It was later in the day, almost sunset, so you didn't really know why he was still outside. He was distracted now so it would be easier to talk to him. Before you knew it your feet were moving and going straight towards the boy.
"Why aren't you talking to me anymore?" He seemed startled by your sudden appearance. He looked up at you with a questioning face. "What happened? Why won't you talk to me?" He closed his book and tried to get up and walk away, as he had been doing often now.
You stopped him, though, by grabbing his arm. He stopped right beside you and didn't dare look over. "What happened to what we had a couple of months ago? Am I not a good enough friend? Was I just a distraction until you got back here?" He spared a glance at you and he seemed… hurt? Why would he be hurt?
"It's not that, Y/n, it's just…" He trailed off, like he didn't know what to say.
"Just what, Remus? Just some sort of summer fling?" He looked down shamefully and you let go of his arm to move in front of him.
"You are one of my best friends. And that's saying something, considering how many other friends I have, and you're my favorite."
He moved to try and get past you, but you were just as fast. "Remus, there's no walking away from this anymore. Talk to me, please." Your voice was starting to waiver, and you were beginning to think that you were just a distraction over the summer. Maybe he didn't like you as much as he let on. He sighed loudly, and looked everywhere except your own eyes.
"I can't, Y/n, not today. I'll tell you soon, I promise. Just not right now." He grasped your upper arms and placed his lips on your forehead. He lingered for a couple of moments, and soon he released you, and a breeze blew past as he walked away. You never thought you could feel that cold in your life, and yet, you felt like you were stuck in the ice in the middle of Antarctica.
You only had your memories of him and his charming smile, the way he laughed at your definitely not funny jokes now. But you hung on. You hung onto his words, his touch, the lips on your forehead. You hung onto his 'not right now'.
All you could do was hang onto the hope of someday, maybe one day, when the sun rises, he'll tell you. And you hope to God it'll be soon. The sun was setting now, setting on the relationship you had with him. But it was going to rise again, and one day it would rise with you and Remus.
