"The Night of the Comet" 1x02

For what feels like the fiftieth time, Mira yawns and rubs her eyes trying to stay awake. She was drop-dead exhausted, and no amount of caffeine could help her. After the animal attack at the Falls last night, Mira couldn't make herself fall asleep, especially in her dark, empty house. She kept replaying blood and ice over and over in her head. She couldn't understand why she had such a bizarre reaction to blood. Usually, she gets nauseous at the sight of blood, but never thirsty. And what about the frost that appeared on her arms? She just felt so angry in that moment that everything turned cold. It's all so bizarre. As those thoughts circled in her mind, every creak and shadow made Mira flinch awake until finally she gave up on sleeping. Now, she's at school, barely awake and regretting her decision to move this morning.

As Mira stumbles through the hallway, the warning bell rings, which only irritates her pounding head further. Moaning in self pity, Mira picks up the pace to Mr. Tanner's class, where she'll undoubtedly fall asleep. At the last second, Mira rushes into the classroom. Ignoring the disapproving glare from Mr Tanner, she slides into her seat. Elena and Bonnie give her concerned looks, but before they can ask her what's wrong, Tanner begins his amazingly boring lecture. Mira groans and lays her head on her desk in silent agony, praying that this class will be over soon. Or that this awful headache will go away.

So, Mira may or may not have actually fallen asleep during class. After the bell rang and Mira still didn't wake up, Elena approached her with a worried frown. Shaking her shoulder was all it took. Mira jolts awake, completely unaware of her surroundings, and accidentally headbutts Elena in the face. Mira gasps in pain and rubs the back of her head for a second until she puts two and two together and realizes she hit someone with her big head! Spinning around, she finds Elena leaning into Stefan, like she fell backwards from the impact. And she was holding her nose with a grimace of pain.

"Oh my god! Elena, I'm so sorry!" Mira moves closer to Elena and begins to wave her hands around. "Are you bleeding? Let me see. Wait, actually don't let me see."

Elena attempts to stop her anxious rant. "Mira it's alri- "

But Mira was too lost in her thought process. "Ugh, I don't know why I bothered to get up this morning. This day has been ridiculous. I'm majorly sleep deprived. I was late to several of my classes. I forgot to bring my homework. And now, I've broken my best friends nose with my sleep ninja skills!"

Elena halts Mira's verbal train of thought by grabbing her best friend by the shoulders and making direct eye contact.

"Mira, are you ok?"

With that one question, Mira slumps in exhaustion. "I'm just tired. And you know when I'm tired, I'm- "

Elena finishes, "Cranky. Yeah, I know."

Mira sighs. "I'm sorry about breaking your face. And ranting. And for traumatizing Stefan."

Simultaneously, they both look at Stefan and burst out laughing. There Stefan stands with eyebrows raised to his hairline, his forest green eyes wide and scared, and his mouth slightly gapped. He shakes off his surprised expression and chuckles along with them. They continue to chuckle as they walk Elena to the nurse to grab some ice for her swollen nose. Thank goodness Elena rarely gets nosebleeds.

After securing ice, Mira leaves Elena in Stefan's capable arms. Walking down the hallway, she spots Caroline and Bonnie ahead of her. Walking up behind them, she listens in on their conversation.

"I'm confused. Are you psychic or clairvoyant?"

"Technically, Grams says I'm a witch."

Mira adds her two cents, while making her friends jump. "Which I fully support."

While Bonnie scoffs at her comment, Caroline holds a hand to her chest and says, "Mira! You scared us. And why have you been ignoring my texts?"

"Sorry Care, I fell asleep in most of my classes and haven't really payed attention to my phone. What've I missed?"

Caroline shrugs. "Not much. Although I did want you to help me with the comet festival setup."

Mira groans. "Ugh, you know I don't do social events. I mean I already went to that back-to-school party. Isn't that enough?"

Bonnie laughs at her, while Caroline shakes her head with a confused face. "Not even close. This year, you are attending every social event I plan."

"What!? But that's all of them."

Caroline smiles. "Exactly."

Caroline walks ahead of them, clearly satisfied. Mira leans on Bonnie with a moan. Bonnie chuckles and pushes Mira forward, continuing to walk through the hallway.

Mira couldn't believe that Caroline was roping her into this. Folding and sorting comet flyers was not her ideal job, but here she was. Luckily, she wasn't the only one Caroline suckered into this, Elena and Bonnie were suffering too.

"Well, I was talking to Grams, and she said the comet is a sign of impending doom. The last time it pasted over Mystic Falls, there was lots of death. So much blood and carnage, it created a bed of paranormal activity."

Something about Bonnie's history lesson made Mira's stomach churn. Maybe it was the impending doom? Or possibly the carnage and blood? Caroline didn't seem to think along the same lines. "Yeah, and then you poured Grams another shot, and she told you about the aliens."

Bonnie rolls her eyes at Caroline, while Mira barely pays attention to them, still thinking about blood and carnage. Focusing on priorities, Caroline asks Elena, "So then what?"

"So, then nothing."

Caroline continues. "You and Stefan talked all night. There was no sloppy first kiss or touchy-feely of any kind?"

Elena shakes her head. "Nope. We didn't go there."

Caroline can't wrap her head around this. "Not even a handshake. I mean, Elena, we are your friends. Ok? You are supposed to share the smut."

Finally zoning in on the conversation, Mira says, "Care, not every relationship has to start out physical. Don't get me wrong. It's nice, but it's not a necessity."

Caroline disagrees. "Yes, it is. Ok it's easy. Boy likes girl. Girl likes boy. Sex."

Mira groans, holding her head in her hands, while Elena says, "Profound."

Elena sits there for a few more seconds and then pops out of her chair. Mira raises an eyebrow in question, while Bonnie asks, "Where are you going?"

Elena turns to us. "Caroline 's right. It is easy. If I sit here long enough, I'll end up talking myself out of it instead of doing what I started the day saying I was going to do."

As Elena walks away, Mira focuses on one particular thing. "Did Elena just say that Caroline was right?"

Mira enters her house in serious need of a nap. She hears noise from the kitchen, so she walks towards it. She could go for a snack anyway. Entering the kitchen, she finds her dad attempting to boil water. Laughing, Mira says, "You know you're not supposed to use the stove anymore."

Wilson turns to her, rubbing his neck sheepishly. "Yeah, I remember, but I thought I would give it another try. I didn't know you'd be home so early."

"Well, Caroline let me leave early when I fell asleep and drooled all over her flyers." Wilson chuckles at the image, while Mira motions him away from the stove, taking over cooking. "But I'm probably gonna go on a run after this."

He nods. "Ok, just be careful. With an animal running around, I don't want you near the woods right now."

Mira nods, while she adds pasta to the boiling water. "Speaking of animal attacks, how's Vicki doing?"

Her dad crosses his arms as he answers, "She seems to be recovering well, although I was told that she had a screaming fit this morning." When Mira gives him a questioning look, he continues. "Supposedly she was screaming about what attacked her. A vampire."

Mira scrunches her face up in confusion. "I wonder why she thought a vampire attacked her."

Wilson shrugs. "Compensating for the trauma, her mind might have tricked her into thinking that's what she saw. Not to mention that Vicki Donovan is an extreme drug user and doesn't shy away from alcohol. In could be any of those factors or a combination of all three."

Mira nods in agreement. Vicki was definitely into the extremes in life. But something was telling her that there was more to this situation than it seemed. Focusing on pouring the sauce on the cooked pasta, Mira finishes and is ready to dig in. Her dad and her eat at the kitchen table and continue to talk about their day. After an hour, her dad gets ready for his shift at the hospital, while Mira changes into her running outfit: a blue sports tank top, black running shorts, and Nike tennis shoes. Hugging her dad goodbye and promising to text him when she gets back home, she takes off at a fast pace.

Despite her dad's warning, running through the trees near the Falls was arguably the best part of Mystic Falls. She just couldn't resist. Plus, Mira wanted to visit her favorite place that no one else knew about. Breaking through the tree line, she smiles at the small, crystal-clear pond and the tall, old oak planted right next to it. This was her clearing, her hideaway when life got too impossible.

Breathing heavy, Mira walks over to the tree and sits down, leaning against it. After she catches her breath, Mira strips down into a blue bikini that she had on under her clothes. Slowly, she glides into the cold, crisp water. Once the water touches her thighs, she dives into the pond. Being underwater is like no other feeling in the world. Everything is peaceful and silent, like her ears are stuffed with cotton balls, blocking out all the noise. Just swimming in water for a few minutes completely rejuvenates her. Mira no longer feels exhausted. Actually, she feels like she could run a marathon now. After a few more minutes of floating on her back, Mira steps out of the water. Ringing out as much water as she can from her hair, she puts her clothes back on and heads back home.

After a nice hot shower, Mira puts on an old t-shirt and Nike shorts, and slips into bed. It only takes her a couple of minutes to completely pass out.

Mira opens her eyes. Sitting up, she takes in her strange surroundings. Did she fall asleep on Wickery Bridge? But something was coming. She could hear footsteps echoing in the dark. On the other side of the bridge, Mira spots a shadow. Moving closer and closer. Heart beating fast, Mira watches as the shadow comes into the light. It's a man. He seems to notice her, so he begins walking towards her. Feeling curious, she walks towards him as well. As she gets closer, she notices his features. Short, dirty blonde hair that has a wild curl. Blue-green eyes piercing her very center. Sharp jawline and perfect bow lips. Once they're arm's length apart, they stop. Looking into her brown and blue eyes, his own widen in surprise. Mira can no longer stay silent. "Who are you? And what is this place?"

Hearing her voice, the man clears his mind and shifts into his regular façade. His face darkens. "Who are you? A witch trying to manipulate me. You should no better than that."

Mira frowns in deep confusion and attempts to answer but he cuts her off.

"I don't want to hear anything you have to say. If you don't release me now, I will rip your heart out."

As he says this, the man's eyes become dark red and black veins appear under them. Gasping in fear, Mira swallows and raises her hands in surrender.

"Look, I don't know who you are or what you are. All I know is this is my dream. And I honestly don't know how you got here. Just please don't turn this into a nightmare."

While she says this, the man's eyebrows raise slightly, and his eyes display his confusion.

He asks, "Who are you?"

"My name is Mira, Mira Borne."

His face remains blank, but his eyes shine with clarity. He smirks a little. "I must apologize Mira. I thought you to be my enemy, but I realize that you're as trapped as I am."

Mira nods shakily. "Pretty much. Although I've never had such a vivid dream before. And I really don't know how my mind created someone like you."

He chuckles. "You still think this is a dream."

She quirks an eyebrow. "Isn't it?"

He just shrugs, but a smirk graces his lips.

"What do I call you?"

His smirk grows. "Nik."

Suddenly her surroundings begin to shake, and everything becomes blurry. Faintly she hears Nik say, "I'm sure we'll see each other again." Then everything turns black.

Gasping, Mira shoots up in bed. Immediately, a pounding headache greets her, and she groans in pain. Despite her hammering head, all she can think about is her bizarre dream. Acting quickly, she grabs an empty notebook from her bookshelf and begins to write every detail of her dream. For some reason, her mind is telling her that that dream was important, no matter how impossible it seemed. Blue-green eyes dance around in her head for the rest of the morning.

After parking her black sonata, Mira scans the crowd for Caroline. She can't find Caroline, but she finds Bonnie and Elena handing out programs. Jogging over to them, she says, "Hey guys, you seen Caroline?"

They grin at her, and Elena replies. "Yeah, she's over there." Elena points at Caroline, who is right in the middle of scolding some poor guy for handing out the wrong flyers.

Mira winces. "Yeahhh, how about I stay with you guys for a bit."

Bonnie laughs, while Elena smiles in complete sympathy. Mira grins and asks, "So, what are we talking about?"

Elena frowns, being reminded of her situation. "You know when I went to the Salvatore Boarding House yesterday?" At Mira's nod, she continues. "Well, I ran into Stefan's older brother, Damon."

Mira's eyes widen. "No way!"

"Yep. And when I talked to him, he was nice at first, but then he started talking about Stefan's ex, who he's apparently not over. Then, Stefan appeared out of no where. He wouldn't even look at me, and he was acting really strange."

Mira makes a face. "Yeah, sounds weird. Has he texted you at all?"

Elena shakes her head. "No. But then I realized that we never even exchanged that stuff. We've never gotten to the texting part."

Bonnie chimes in. "That's an important milestone in any relationship."

"Isn't it? The timing is wrong anyway."

Mira says, "When is it ever right? Maybe it was just a fluke. Everyone has bad days. Maybe Stefan was having a rough day and then comes home to his estranged brother. That would make anyone weird."

Elena nods. "Maybe. But it doesn't matter. I'm just not ready."

Bonnie asks, "Who is?"

"At least I put myself out there."

"Is that what you're calling it?"

Elena looks down at the pamphlets. "What do you mean?"

"All I'm hearing is reasons why you can't."

Elena doesn't have a response to that. She thinks about her friends' words and nods slightly in agreement. Mira continues to walk with them until she hears Caroline shouting her name. "Mira! You're late!" Caroline walks over to Mira, who freezes up knowing she's been caught. "Why didn't you report to me as soon as you got here? Actually, don't answer that. We have work to do."

Grabbing onto her hand, Caroline pulls Mira along behind her. Mira mouths "help me" at Bonnie and Elena, but they just burst out laughing. As Mira's being pulled along, she notices that dark-haired stranger she saw at the Grill a couple of days ago. He smirks at her, but as people pass by her, he disappears. Mira frowns in confusion. She can't help but wonder why all this strange stuff keeps happening to her.

Mira and Caroline walk towards Elena, Bonnie, and Matt; and hand them some candles. Each grabbing one, they light them. Mira watches as Elena lights Stefan's candle. She grins at them and their cuteness. Nudging Bonnie, she points to the couple and they smile at them. Turning towards the sky, Mira gazes at the bright blue comet. Staring at the beautiful ball of ice, she feels a strong pull to it. Like her body sensed it. She doesn't understand the feeling, but she acknowledges it as a real feeling. Not something she's imagining.

After a while, they all pile in the Grill and grab some food. Munching on her cheesy fries, Mira notices Jeremy approaching.

"Hey, has anyone seen Vickie?"

Tyler responds. "You're her stalker, you tell us."

Ignoring Tyler, Jeremy says, "I can't find her."

Tyler continues. "She probably found someone else to party with. Sorry pill pusher, I guess you've been replaced."

Elena makes a face. "What's with the pill pusher?"

Tyler nods at Jeremy. "Ask him."

Jeremy glares. "You wanna do this right now?"

At the same time, Elena asks, "Are you dealing?

Tyler continues, "She's never going to go for you."

"She already did. Over and over and over again."

Mira's eyebrows raise in surprise. She didn't see that one coming. Caroline didn't either as she says, "You slept with Vicki Donovan? I mean, Vicki Donovan slept with you?"

Tyler disagrees. "There's no way."

Jeremy adds, "And I didn't even have to force her into it."

Jeremy stares right at Tyler when he says this. Matt faces Tyler and asks, "What the hell is he talking about, Ty?"

"Nothing, man, just ignore him. He's a punk."

Matt responds. "You know what, how about all of you shut up and help me find my sister."

They all split up, and Mira ends up searching with Tyler of all people. It's not that she doesn't like him. He just acts like such an arrogant jerk sometimes, which can really get on her nerves. But she's willing to be friendly as long as he doesn't act like too much of a jerk. So, she initiates a conversation. "So…the comet's cool, right?"

Probably not her best conversation starter, but at least she tried.

Tyler gives her a weird look, but answers. "Yeah, I guess."

When he doesn't say anything else, she assumes that he doesn't want to talk to her, which she doesn't really blame him for. But as the silence continues, Mira begins to tap her feet and her hands twitch. After a couple of minutes in complete silence, she can't take it anymore.

"Ok, I can't take it. This silence is driving me nuts! We have to talk. I don't care about what. Any topic you want."

Tyler looks at her for a second before he throws his head back, laughing. He continues laughing for a couple more seconds and then says, "You're really funny, you know that?"

Mira grins sheepishly. "I have been known to say hilarious things."

He chuckles again. And then they just talk, while they continue to search. As she talks to Tyler, she realizes that he's not as bad as she thought. Actually, he's pretty funny. After a while, they get word that Vicki has been found. They decide to separate and find their own groups, but before she leaves, Tyler gives her his number so they can hangout again sometime. Smiling, Mira agrees and walks back to the Grill.

While drinking some coffee, Mira listens to Caroline complain with an amused smile.

"Uhh, it's just so much drama. Ever notice how the druggies are the biggest attention whores?"

Mira hums, while Bonnie says, "Yeah."

Then, Stefan approaches us. "Excuse me. Hi. Um, have you guys seen Elena?"

Bonnie answers, "I think she went home."

Stefan makes the saddest kicked-puppy face ever and turns to leave. Bonnie stops him and says, "I'm gonna give you Elena's cell number and her email. She is big on texting, and you can tell her I said so."

Mira chuckles, but immediately stops when Bonnie hands Stefan the info. Bonnie jerks her hand away and stares at Stefan in fear. Stefan frowns in concern. "You ok?"

Bonnie continues to stare. "What happened to you?"

Realizing what she just said, Bonnie fidgets and mutters, "That is so rude. I'm sorry. Excuse me."

Bonnie hurriedly stands up and leaves. Mira calls out to her, but she's already gone. Looking at Stefan, Caroline says, "Yeah, she kind of wigs out. It's like her thing."

Stefan just nods grimly and leaves the Grill soon after.

Caroline left a few minutes ago, so Mira is trying to finish her drink as fast as possible so she can go home. Slurping the last of her coffee, Mira pays and leaves the Grill. Walking to her black Sonata, she hears something whoosh behind her. Spinning around, she scans her surroundings, but honestly can't see much in the dark. Shaking her head, she turns towards her car and gasps. The dark-haired stranger was standing right in front of her, smirking. "Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you."

Feeling her internal danger radar going off, Mira just smiles thinly and says, "Right. No harm done."

The man smirks even more. "Not yet."

Mira tries to walk around him, but he steps in front of her. When Mira opens her mouth to question him, he looks right into her eyes and says, "Don't move. Don't scream."

Before she can respond or run, this stranger's face changes. His eyes become red, and inky veins appear under his eyes. Mira almost gets a scream out, but he bites into her neck, effectively cutting her off. Mira struggles, hitting and kicking, but it doesn't do anything. The more he drinks, the weaker she becomes. After what felt like forever, he releases her. She collapses and would've hit her head on the pavement, but he catches her just in time. The stranger takes one look at her pale skin and semi-conscious eyes and knows that he'll have to heal her or there's gonna be another dead body trailing behind him. Mira blearily watches as he bites into his own wrist, making himself bleed profusely. The scent of his blood immediately hits her, and she has to fight the urge to vomit. That putrid stuff smells toxic. The stranger shoves his bloody wrist into her mouth. She gags and tries to pull away, the taste being even worse than the smell, but he shushes her and continues to force his blood into her mouth. While he's doing this, he mumbles out loud. "You were definitely worth it. Sweetest blood I've had in a century."

After a couple of seconds, he decides she's had enough and watches her wound heal. Then he looks into her eyes again and compels her. "You will not remember any of this. You will go home and go straight to sleep."

Mira slowly nods, which seems to satisfy the stranger. Then he just vanishes. As soon as she's sure he's gone, Mira drops her act. She gets into her car and just sits there, sobbing. Her neck still hurts, even though the wound is gone, and she feels like she's gonna throw up. Mira didn't understand what just happened. Who was that? What was he? Why would he want to attack her? And she didn't understand the whole eye contact thing, as if she would ever forget this. His comment about her "sweet" blood was just plain morbid. She halts in her thoughts. Blood. Right at that moment, she remembered what her father told her…about what Vicki had said. Vampire.
