I am happy everyone's liking the story. It wont be super long maybe8 - 10 chapters depending how it goes. The characters are not mine. Review and let me know what you think.
Jay looked around his room. His hospital room to be more exact, how he hated it and yet he seemed to land here occasionally. He was taken to some tests and then transferred to another room in the hospital waiting for his results. He didn't quite understand what was going on since Will was being evasive, but he just wanted to get the hell out of here.
"Hello Jay, I'm Dr. Abrams." He remembered seeing this doctor before. "I am a neurologist. You took quite a blow to the head and while your CT and MRI don't show any permanent damage you are suffering from short term memory loss."
"Will? " he turned to his brother who was standing next to Dr. Abrams. "What is he talking about I remember everything?"
"Jay when we spoke before I was asking you questions about your life, your work and your family."
"Yeah and I answered them all."
"Jay you told me its May 2017"
"Yes so"
"Its June 2023."
"What?"
"Detective you seem to have forgotten the last 6 years of your life." The doctor said very rationally.
"Come Will you gotta be kidding me. Is this some joke?" Jay was having a hard time believe what he was hearing. There was no way he would have forgotten 6 years. He knows what day it is, he woke up this morning and went to work like normal. However, looking at his brother's face he could see it was no joke. "This is real?"
"I'll leave you to explain it to him Dr. Halstead. Let me know if you need anything and don't forget to schedule the follow ups we spoke about." The doctor excused himself leaving Jay and Will alone in the room.
"Will please tell me again what's happening, how did I end up here?"
"Jay you were in a routine meet and there was an altercation, you got hit on the head and here we are. Like Dr. Abrams explained you have short term memory loss, in your case the last 6 years."
"How is that possible? I remember going into work today."
"I am afraid the mind can play tricks like that. In reality the morning you remember was a long time ago."
Jay was listening to his brother trying to grasp the meaning behind his words but still it seemed unreal. "Well it seems I am still a cop in intelligence right?"
"Yes you are."
"And everything else is pretty much the same, the team, you, Erin and dad?" Jay saw Will's face immediately change.
"Jay dad passed away?"
"What? When? What happened?" He felt his throat close and a knot in his stomach formed. He was not close with his father but finding out he died hit him hard.
"It was about 4 years ago. There was a fire in his building."
"No no no Will. This is not happening to me. I feel like im watching a movie scene. When am I going to get my memory back?"
"I don't know Jay. The mind is unpredictable. It might take a day or a week or even a few months."
"But I will remember everything right?"
"Yes, there is no permanent damage there's just no way of knowing when."
Jay was still agitated but took his brothers words to heart, a light at the end of this tunnel. He just needed to get through whatever time it took to get his memory back and he would be okay. He knew his could always count in his friends and Erin would help him fill in the blanks.
"Will you get me my phone? I guess Erin doesn't know what's going on or she would be here already. I want to call her and let her know what's going on. Please tell me I don't have to stay in the hospital. I feel fine and if you say its just a matter of waiting then I can go home right?"
"Jay Erin is not here. She's in New York."
"New York? For work?"
"Listen Jay, there's someone who is better suited to explain things to you." He watched as Will went out to the hallway and came back with Hailey Upton. "Hailey knows what's going on with your memory loss and she is really the best person to explain everything that's been going on to you. I am going to leave you guys to talk. Jay you do need to stay but just for tonight, we just want to monitor you and that way we can give you some more pain meds for your concussion."
"So what's going on that my brother is so mysterious." Jay didn't really know Hailey Upton. He had only worked with her in a few cases. She seemed like a good detective and an okay person. He looked at her and she did look a little older than he remembered. She also seemed really nervous and looked like she'd been crying.
"Jay you remember me, right?
"Yes, you've been in intelligence a few weeks."
"Actually for over six years."
"Right sorry I keep forgetting I'm a little behind in current events." He chuckled and saw her smile a little.
"I know sorry. Well for the past 6 years we have been partners in intelligence."
"Really? Well, that explains you being here at the hospital. I hope we don't come here a lot although I know I have a tendency for getting injured."
"Don't I know it. At least this time you didn't get shot."
"I got shot?"
Hailey didn't really want to start their conversation with telling him he was shot but she had just blurted It out. She was just so nervous; it was like being introduced to Jay all over again and she didn't quite know how to do it. "A few times actually but you obviously made it through fine."
"Well sorry, I know it sucks seeing your partner get hurt. I am surprised Voight partnered us together. I guess he took very seriously separating me and Erin at work."
Hailey swallowed hard before getting to the difficult topic "Jay Erin left for New York to work for the FBI 6 years ago."
"I remember her here."
"Do you remember her going before the disciplinary board?"
"She was going in 2 days."
"She left right after."
Jay didn't understand what he was hearing. Erin left and he didn't. they didn't go together. "Erin and I are not together are we?"
"No, I am sorry."
"I was going to propose to her with my mothers ring." Jay was having difficulty thinking he and Erin weren't together. "Did I propose and she turned me down?"
Hailey could hear the pain in his words, could see the pain in his eyes and it was like going back in time to when he was so broken. "She left before you proposed."
"But why?"
Hailey couldn't bear to see him in so much pain. He had already gone through this before and it had taken all his strength to get through and it wasn't fair for him to go through it again. " I don't know Jay."
He closed his eyes trying to hold the tears that were threatening to spill in front of Hailey Upton. They might have been partners for 6 years but he didn't know her and wouldn't let his emotions run loose in front of her. "Could you leave me alone please?" He saw surprise and hurt in her face. "I mean I appreciate you being here, but I need to be alone right now."
"Of course, I understand." She did understand, at least her mind did but her heart was screaming to stay and kiss him and hold his hands and make him remember. She didn't even get to tell him they are more than work partners. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Jay waited for Hailey to leave to let the tears fall. He felt so out of control and out of place. How could he have let Erin walk out of his life. He saw a phone next to the bed and dialed Erin. He didn't care it had been 6 years for her, but he had just seen her this morning and he needed to talk to her.
You have reached the voicemail of special agent Erin Lindsay leave a message.
Special agent, she was a special agent with the FBI. "Hi Erin, um its Jay can you please give me a call. There was an incident at work and I really need to speak to you." he felt better after leaving the message. His headache was back in full force now so he asked the nurse for more pain medicine and fell into a restless sleep hoping tomorrow would bring his life back to him.
When Hailey left the hospital room and went straight to her car and as soon as she got in she broke down. The tears she had been holding coming down hard as sobs wrecked her body. She still couldn't believe this was happening. Will said it was temporary and he would regain all his memories but that it could take a few months. And if this was how it was going to be Hailey was barely able to survive a few hours how she would survive a few months. It took her another 20 minutes to calm down, she then drove home, took a shower, and went to sleep in their bed, wearing his t-shirt so she could at least feel close to him here. Tomorrow would be another day.
Next chapter - Erin is coming to town.
