"ALL RIGHT, LADIES! LINE UP AGAINST THE FENCE" Sue Sylvester's voice boomed through the megaphone.

Around 25 girls lined up against the fence to the dugout and waited for their coach to continue. For those who don't know, that is a lot of people trying out for a not-so-popular high school sport.

Many of the girls on the team last year are used to Sue screaming in the first 5 minutes of practice. Those who are new, well, you can picture their faces.

Brittany stood next to Santana and nudged her shoulder with her own. Santana looked at the blonde with a slight smirk.

The tall girl reached out her pinky and linked it with the brunette. Santana's smirk turned into a full smile, teeth and all. Brittany always knew how to make her smile, even if it was just something as small as a pinky link. They both turned their heads back to their coaches to see what they had in store for them today.

"Let's get one thing clear here! NO ONE is allowed to slack off! You want to be on this team; you need to prove it to me!" Sue shouted.

"This week is going to be tough!" Coach Bieste roared, "The first two days are going to be fielding, then batting, and then lastly, on Friday, we are going to scrimmage against each other," Some of the younger girls looked at each other, scared that they'll have played against the former varsity players. Bieste notices this and reassures them, "Don't worry, we'll split everyone up evenly. That's why we have to tryouts."

"We will split everyone into groups for the first part today based on the position you play. You will be working with the varsity captains, and if we like what we see, you'll stay. If not, well, you'll be moved around," Sue echoed, "By the end of this week, you will be told whether or not you're on varsity or JV with the weirdos."

Coach bieste nudged sue in her rib with a slight chuckle. She then called down the seniors and juniors on varsity last year to stand next to her. 9 of the girls lined up against the dugout made their way towards their coaches.

"These ladies that are standing next to me are some of your senior captains. You will listen to them, you will learn from them, and if you have any problems and coach and I aren't there to help, go to them," Bieste explained.

"I'm well aware that you've all met during preseason warmups, but in case you don't remember, they'll introduce themselves again!" Sue shouted and then walked around them to get a better view of the newbies. She gestured to Becky to start.

"Hey bitches! I'm Becky! I'm your manager, so I can pretty much do whatever I want" she gave a slight head nod and walked away with some sass.

Sue chuckled to herself before yelling, "If you have a problem with her, then you have a problem with ME!" she then nodded for Quinn to continue.

"Hey, guys! I'm Quinn. I'm the center fieldmen, and I'm a senior." Quinn finished and jogged out towards the center field.

Seven of the nine varsity members introduced themselves and their positions. Marley, a junior, in left field, Kitty, also a junior, in right field, Rachel, a senior, on second base, Unique, a junior, on first base, Mercedes, a senior, on the pitcher's mound, and tina, a senior, on third base.

Brittany looked at the brunette next to her and offered for her to go before her.

"Hey! I'm Santana," she gave a tight-lipped smile and a slight wave to the new kids. She hated doing icebreakers and just wanted to get this over with so she can start playing, "I'm a catcher and a senior. If any of you think about messing with me, I will endz yous" she glared at the girls before jogging off to put on her equipment.

Brittany stood there wide-eyed before a small chuckle escaped her lips. "Uhh," she giggled, "That's Santana as you know," she covered her mouth with her hands before clearing her throat and continuing, "I'm Brittany, I'm a senior and the shortstop," she jogged over to her position and waited.

Coach bieste looked around at her varsity players, making sure they're ready before speaking. "Now you know your varsity players! If you are an infielder, please step forward" 16 of the 25 girls stepped forward. "Oh, my," Bieste said, "Whichever position you play, please make your way over to your seniors and juniors."

Four girls went over to tina at third base; two girls went over to Mercedes on the mound; two girls went over to Rachel on second. One girl went over Santana behind home plate, four girls went over to Brittany between third and second, and three girls went over to Unique at first.

"Catchers!" Sue called out their attention, "Pease put on your gear - Oh, it's just one of you? well, PUT ON YOUR GEAR!" She shouted in the freshman's face, probably scarring her for life.

"Don't worry about her; you'll get used to it," Santana whispered to the freshman, noticing that she's shaking with fear.

Brittany noticed that some girls that tried out last year are here again this year and smirked to herself. She saw the Bree, a former cheerio, is trying out and walked over to Brittany. The blonde's smirk faded because she's not the biggest fan of the girl.

"Hey, Britt Britt," Bree said with a sickly sweet tone.

Brittany inwardly groaned to herself and put on a polite smile, "Hi Bree," she then noticed the other three girls and put her attention on them.

As the infielders were setting up and being directed at what to do, Coach Bieste brought the remaining nine girls out to the outfield.

"Ladies, you've met your outfielders; please go into your positions while I get set up," she explained as she turned away to get her stuff.

One of the sophomore girls raised her hand. "Uhm, excuse me, coach Bieste," the girl said quietly. Coach bieste turned around with curiosity written on her face. "Why do you need to set up?"

"Well, my dear," Bieste started, "there are two coaches, Sue and myself; I'm the outfield coach, whereas Sue is the infield coach. She makes all the infield plays and corrections, and I do the same for the outfield. Does that make sense?" The young girl nodded. "What's your name?"

"Sofia," the girl said quietly.

"Well, Sofia, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me or your seniors or juniors," She smiled and looked at Quinn, "Fabray, warm them up, please," she finished in a more demanding tone.

In the last 2 hours, the infield and outfield have been hard at work, trying to succeed at the hard drills their coaches have been making them do.

It started with some light throwing and catching, but it gradually turned into the girls out of breath, sweaty, and covered in dirt, well, most of them anyway. You wouldn't have thought that softball can make someone look so worn out because they just stand there the entire time, but no, it's a lot of work if you think about it.

Santana and Mercedes worked together behind the dugout with their group learning the different types of pitches and the perfect stance a catcher needs to be in for said pitches, while Sue worked with the rest of the infield.

Each girl took turns going over each play. The former varsity players went first to show the younger girls how the play is done. Coach sue would hit softballs towards a specific position, and they would have to throw it to one of the bases.

In the outfield, Coach Bieste is hitting fly balls to the players making sure they succeed in certain moves, the drop step, and the crow hop. It is the best way for outfielders to catch a fly ball and throw it into their target.

Both the infield practiced diving for the ball, some better than others, some in need of more practice. Many girls were moved from the original position to see if they played better than before; most of them were ok.

Brittany really enjoyed tryouts today, but the thing she didn't like was the fact that Bree was making it a living hell for her. She would slack off and talk back to Brittany when she was just trying to help; she would half-ass all the drills and make sure everyone but the coach knew. It was painful for Brittany to watch; she just hoped that she wouldn't be stuck with her for a year.

Brittany never understood why Bree acted the way she did towards her; she literally had never said a word to her before last year, and the only thing she said was "Hi, I'm Brittany," and ever since then, Bree was a bitch. Of course, Santana stood up for Brittany whenever Bree would try to bring her down; they're best friends, so why wouldn't she? But the blonde just never could grasp why Bree did the things she did only to her.

Santana would always tell Brittany that she was just jealous, and Brittany thought that for a while until it never stopped, and it never seemed like Bree had something to be jealous of.

"Hey, Brittany," Bree sang, "how's your lady friend? Finally, ask out Santana yet?" She asked with a slight smirk.

Brittany's head swiveled around in an instant and glared at the smaller girl. "What?"

"Oh, Come on! It's so obvious that you're head over heels in love with the girl. Like seriously? Could you be any more obvious? Who knew you were a dyke?" she snarked.

"For your information, I'm bi, and I wasn't in the closet; everyone already knew. And I'm- I'm not in - in love with... Santana," She stuttered. That was a complete and utter lie. Of course, she was in love with Santana. Who isn't? But Santana's straight and her best friend, and she wouldn't want to jeopardize their friendship by acting on some innocent crush. But it is always fun getting her sweet lady kisses, even if it is only when they're drunk.

"Really? You don't seem so sure about that," Bree raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms, her glove in between her underarm.

Brittany rolled her eyes and moved up in line behind one of the freshmen in her group. She heard Bree chuckle and scoffed.

Practice went on for another hour and ended at 6 pm. Everyone was packed up and getting ready to be picked up by their parents.

"Before everyone leaves today! Make sure you wear sweats tomorrow! Every day at practice, you need to be wearing red and grey McKinley clothes! I don't care if your shirt is red or grey. It just has to be one of those colors and part of the school. Don't ask questions! Just do it! Also, Bring sneakers and cleats to practice every day because it's Ohio, the weather is always changing! With that being said, SEE YOU LOSERS TOMORROW!" Sue exclaimed as she walked away towards her LeCar.

Coach Bieste watched her walk away and laughed at her, "how is she, my friend?" she muttered to herself and looked towards to girls, "great tryouts today, ladies, see you tomorrow," she waved her goodbye and left the field.

All the girls left except the former varsity players; they all walked up to each other by the dugout and sat down.

"Ugh! Oh my god!" Santana grounded. She wiped the sweat off her forehead and lied down on her bag. "The freshman in my group wouldn't stop talking, 'do I do this? Do I do that?'" she mocked.

The girls chuckled at her, "Yeah, well, at least you didn't have to deal with Sarah, god she smells!" Tina exclaimed.

"The girls in your grade, guys, are so weird!" Mercedes laughed, directing that at Marley, Kitty, and Unique. "The girls in my group were ok; there was one girl who pitched at least 63 mph."

Quinn gasped, "damn! 'Cedes, she might take your spot!"

"Pfft," she waved her off, Puh-lease, bitch I pitch 82mph; I was being scouted by the best softball colleges in the state since freshman year. "How were the girls in your group's guys? Britt, I saw you had Bree in your group."

Everyone groaned because everyone hates Bree. "Ugh, she was so annoying, but I ignored her for most of the part, she would half-ass everything, and I would get blamed for it," the tall blonde complained, pulling her hair out from her ponytail and running her fingers through it.

Santana notices the tension in the blonde's face, runs her hand over her ankles, and discreetly rubs soothing patterns.

"Girl, I'm sorry," Rachel says, "but hey?! Do you know who was pretty good today? Sugar! I was so surprised."

"Yea, I saw her; she's worked so hard since last year. She could possibly be on varsity this year!" Unique commented.

They all sat there for a better part of 30 minutes, losing track of time just talking about the positives and negatives of today's tryouts went until they all left.

Brittany drove Santana home because she was on the way and because she drove her to school. Once they reached Santana's house, they gave each other a quick hug and said their goodbyes.

"Bye, San! I'll see you tomorrow!" Brittany exclaimed.

"Bye, Britt! Love ya!" Santana called out as she made her way up her driveway.

Brittany started driving off before she gave a little toot from her horn; once she heard Santana let out a little yelp, she couldn't help but laugh.

A/N, thanks for reading, and sorry for the delay. I'm not going to promise that I'll update every week, but I'll try to update as much as I can.

The next chapter skips over the other day of fielding because it's just the same drills, so it'll be batting.

I made a Pinterest board for this story on my account - Alexfruhling in case you want to check it out or need an image of what I imagine how they play

See ya soon
