DylanLovesBrenda I literally wrote AU in all caps, in the description. You should have stayed away as soon as it said not BD friendly. And if this is coming off as having Brenda out of character, good! Every story I come across has Kelly acting OOC (stories in which she drugs Dylan, bullies everyone else, calls Donna stupid, has David, Dylan, and Brandon calling her out every chance they get and lives and breathes to make Brenda miserable) when the real Kelly would never do that and nobody says anything about it. Maybe this story is just me choosing a different narrative to tell. Don't like it, don't read. It's as simple as that. If anything, you just inspired me to keep writing so thanks for that!
Now on with the story...
Dylan froze as soon as he heard the words come out of his ex-girlfriend's mouth. Kelly's hand dropped from her place around his neck and the warmth she provided was gone as well. Things had begun to finally go his way. His dad was back, he had the girl of his dreams on his arm, and he was excelling in his AP Lit class. But of course, things had to come crashing back down to remind him that he didn't fully deserve to be happy, to be at peace.
His jaw tightened as he got up and grabbed Brenda's wrist, steering them into the corner and away from the crowd. "Are you sure?"
"I haven't been with anyone else." Well, she had. But she wasn't about to disclose that information to Dylan.
"Did you go to the doctor yet? Do Jim and Cindy know?" Brenda's parents already had trouble with their relationship when they were still dating, Dylan couldn't imagine they would be happy with the news.
"I have an appointment tomorrow. I'd like for you to be there. And I was hoping we could tell them together."
He was supposed to go to dinner with his dad, Christine, and Kelly. But he bit his lip and nodded. "Okay."
Dylan didn't know how he would explain this to Kelly when he went back to the table, but he braced himself for the worst. Just as Brenda had made her dramatic entrance, she had exited just as quickly.
"What was that about? Was what Brenda said true? Is she pregnant with your baby?" The questions came at a rapid fire, it was making Dylan's head spin. It was then that he realized the questions weren't coming from his girlfriend but from Donna, David, and Steve respectively. Kelly was staring at her plate, pushing around her fries. She hadn't said a word since Brenda's announcement.
"You okay D?" Brandon asked from behind the counter. He had half a mind to run back home and ask Brenda to tell him the truth, or to tell him that this was all some big joke and she just wanted to get a reaction out of everyone. Yet he was stuck at work until closing.
"I'll find out soon enough." His friends gave him sympathetic smiles. Donna couldn't help but frown. If this was true, her two best friends would be even more at odds than they were currently.
"Can you take me home now?" Kelly's voice broke him out of his thoughts and he sighed before getting up from the table and leaving the diner with Kelly in tow. The car ride home was quiet. Dylan tried to talk about anything else, but Kelly remained silent which to him was scarier than her being vocal about the situation. If she was angry then at least he could try and calm her down, rationalize her feelings.
Later that night Kelly twisted and turned in her bed. She couldn't sleep so she went downstairs to get some water. She found David sitting at the kitchen table and joined him.
"Couldn't sleep either?" She asked her stepbrother, taking a seat besides him and wrapping her robe tighter around herself.
"How are you feeling? After that bomb drop with Brenda and everything?"
"I don't know what we'll do if it's true, if Brenda is really pregnant. I can't imagine what Dylan must be going through." This new revelation did serve as a distraction from her own family drama with the divorce pending and Jackie wanting to sell the house.
The two were broken out of their thoughts by the sound of the phone ringing in Kelly's room. She excused herself from the table and entered just in time to hear the message that Dylan was leaving.
"Hey Kel, I just wanted to hear your voice before I fell asleep. And to tell you that no matter what happens with Brenda, I still choose you okay? You're the one I want to be with. I love you and nothing will change that, not even Brenda having my baby. Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. Sleep tight."
Kelly still wasn't sure what to think, but her boyfriend's voice soothed her. He sounded so sure of his words, of his commitment to her that she couldn't help but feel that everything was going to be alright.
Still to come: Brenda's first ultrasound, Dylan spends more time with his dad, and Jackie sets a date for the open house.
