Insomniac: A Teen Titans OC-SI

Chapter One: Out of the Ocean

Air entered my lungs as I gasped, my nose taking in the unique scent of salt water. On my face I felt the course and rough texture of sand. I was no longer in the dark void where I had seen all of those things and received my mission from the mysterious entity that had either kidnapped or rescued me.

Now I was on a beach, and from the direction the beach was facing I began to presume that I was somewhere on the west coast. The sky was cloudy, roiling with the kind of clouds that would appear just before an intense storm. And when I looked eastward, I found a city with towering skyscrapers.

I still had the wallet and the duffle bag that had been sent with me. In the wallet was a driver's license that displayed the following information:

Name: Alexander Zachary Graile

Age: 16

Sex: Male

Height: 5'09"

Weight: 140 lbs

Eyes: Grey

The wallet also held a credit card and at least one-thousand American dollars in cash, along with a few gift cards to restaurants and stores I had never heard of, as well as a couple of insurance cards.

The duffle bag held something completely different. Inside were a set of clothes. Black sweatshirt, black jeans, blue trench coat, and a white, circular mask that covered my entire face, save for two square-shaped eye holes. There was also a touch-screen phone and some kind of highly advanced laptop inside of the bag, along with a couple of featureless grey books and a sheet of notebook paper that read as such:

To Alexander Graile,

You can thank me for the contents of your duffle bag and wallet. If you are going to operate as an Agent, you are going to need what's inside of both. First, financials. As you may have already discovered, the wallet holds one thousand dollars in cash, a credit card, and some gift cards that should help you save money. The only thing that is really 'special' in this wallet is the credit card, as it can be used to draw money from whatever bank account you have.

Speaking of bank accounts, I've already set you up with one. You currently have two thousand in your checking and twenty-eight in your savings. Don't spend it all at once. As for the outfit, if you want to be an agent, you damn well better look the part. Most have their own unique style, but I think this will suit you, considering where you are. The phone isn't any different from the ones found in 2016 but contains a few videos that should help you understand your own unique abilities.

The computer on the other hand is from an Earth where science has become so advanced that it basically looks like magic. This was the cheapest thing I could find, yet it still could hack all of the world governments at once (Seriously, please don't take that as a suggestion, I'd be in some serious shit if you did)! It can also fold over to become a touch-pad screen, is water-proof, and nigh indestructible. I tossed the fucker into a volcano and it was barely even warm when I got it out.

The books themselves are basically magic for dummies. I suggest that you read the highlighted parts, as the subject of magic can still be somewhat difficult to grasp. If you dig a bit deeper into the bag, then you should also find a high-tech stun baton, some shock gauntlets, and a military-grade combat knife. I wanted to give you a BFG, but our shared Client said no, so you will have to make do with this slightly modified 9mm pistol. Aside from that sort of protection, there is also a belt that comes with a small forcefield generator. It won't prevent you from getting atomized by a nuclear bomb, but if you get hit by a truck or a bus you should be fine. The batteries run on solar power and will need to be recharged every week.

Other than those things…get some friends! Get laid! Do something with your life because life is too short to live without people and monsters trying to fucking kill you! Seriously, do something aside from this Agency stuff or your remaining days will be sad and miserable!

With Love and Kisses,

DG.

After reading the note, I shifted through the bag again, finding the described items and removing them from the bag. The belt itself had three separate battery packs, and three slots for said packs. I didn't know if I needed all three or if they could be applied separately, so I put the belt back in the bag. I also found the baton and shock gauntlets but left both off of my person. I had no need for weapons in the present, as I had no intention of getting in any fights until I knew where I was. Then I inspected the pistol. The safety was on—which was a good thing—and there was a holster to be found, along with three extra clips. The bullets themselves were marked as non-lethal, meaning that they were most likely some form of riot bullets.

I packed the weapons back into the bag and made my way to the city. I would need a place to live, after all.

The apartment I had purchased wasn't anything special. Only a closet, a bathroom, and the main room and a single bed. Smaller than I would have liked, but big enough to suit my needs. I sat down on the bed and activated both the laptop and the phone. One had videos that would help me understand my 'abilities' better, and the other had a number of files that I could use to learn how my gear operated.

The files on the laptop concerning the shield belt told me that I needed all three of the battery packs in order for the belt to work properly, while the shock gauntlets and the stun baton were fully self-sustaining. They also held instructions on how to dismantle and repair every piece of gear, including the phone and the laptop.

The phone on the other hand didn't have very much that was of use to me, only videos detailing people fighting with the stun baton and shock gauntlets, and several gun katas for the pistol. There were captions, but they only ever repeated one phrase: Watch and see.

Eventually, I used the phone to access the internet of the city I was in. According to the websites I found there, it was currently 2004, and the city I was in was named Jump. I knew that name. It was the name of a city in a superhero cartoon that was being made at about the same time. I knew this because my siblings and I had watched the cartoon while I was eight.

A cartoon known as the Teen Titans, which had belonged to Detective Comics, also known as DC comics. Then, the entity's words—the words of the man who I suspected to be the Client that DG had referred to—came back to me.

Five extraordinary people.

Was I mandated to meet this future team of superheroes?

AN: Thus ends the first chapter of Insomniac. In truth, I don't know what my update schedule for this is gonna look like, but I shall try to update it as frequently as possible.
