"You really are your Dad's child." Cackling flooded through the speaker of his phone.
"Kacchan, can you just go and get what I asked you to get? I don't think taking Keigo out into a crowded store would do any good right now and all he has is what the commission had on hand to wear. I want any trace of them off and away from Keigo as soon as possible." He had planned to tell his parents about what happened first but his long time friend had called him not even two seconds after he stepped out of the building. There had to have been some kind of interference surrounding the building because he walked out to be bombarded with voicemails and text messages.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll get everything and be over before I go on patrol. Your place or your parents?" There was a rustling on the other side of the line as Izuku lets out a breath of relief. He didn't think Kacchan would deny his request but it was a weight off of his shoulders to hear the verbal confirmation of help.
He takes a moment to think and lets out a sigh. "Mom and Papa would never forgive me if I just went straight home and didn't bring them their newly acquired grandson. Kami I need to call dad before I even attempt to go over there though. Maybe add a pair of noise balancing headphones on the list? I have a pair on me but they're entirely too big for an eight year old's head. They'll work for today but I want him to be comfortable." He's mumbling by the end.
"I'll add it to the list. I'm getting in the car now so I can get this done before patrol. Talk to you soon, Nerd." With the blonde's parting words, his phone clicks quietly to let him know Kacchan hung up.
He looks down at the boy in his arms and took a pause in his trek to the bus stop he could barely see in the distance.
Keigo was looking around them with wide eyes filled with wonder. His wing were still pulled close to his back but the rest of him was much more relaxed than it was when they were inside the Commission building. The way Keigo's eyes lit up when a small flock of pigeons flew by made his heart ache.
Just how long have they kept this little hawk grounded?
He's loathe to interrupt the quiet wonder that settled around the little bird but he had too. "Keigo?" The boy startles in his arms and quickly ducks his head. Like he's expecting to be scolded for simply looking around at his environment.
There's not a corner in this galaxy that Keigo's "handlers" could hide where he wouldn't be able to find them and tear them limb from limb.
He decides that commenting on the boy's reaction would just make things worse so he charges on. "I don't have a booster seat right now to drive you around in my car, so we're going to have to take a different way to get places for the moment. There's three, maybe four ways we can get around right now and I'd like to know which you would prefer." Golden eyes snap up to him in surprise. Like no one has ever asked for his opinion on something.
Mass murder.
Just.
Mass murder.
"So there's the bus system where we might be able to sit down but might also be packed into like a can of sardines because of what time of day it is." Keigo scrunches his nose up so he mimics him and says, "I know, doesn't sound like a fun time at all." He smiles when Keigo's eyes sparkle at being agreed with. "There's also the train we could get on that would probably be like the bus, again because of the time of day. We could walk or I can call up a friend to come pick us up. My parent's house is a little far from here but if you're not comfortable with being possibly squished or being in the car with my friend right now I have no problem walking with you." He makes sure to keep his words simple and slow so that the eight year old would have no problems understanding him.
Two blonde eyebrows scrunch together tightly in concentration. He wonders if the concentration is over what he wants to do or over what he thinks he should say. As if there's a possible wrong answer.
'Inhale deeply. Exhale slowly. Going on a rampage will do Keigo no good right now, Izuku.' He makes sure to keep his face calm and encouraging as to not scare the thin boy in his arms, especially when nervous little Keigo mumbled his answer under his breath like it physically pained him to say it. 'Going to have to work on his confidence and trust first and foremost. I need to know what's on him mind so I can help him properly with what he wants and needs.'
"What was that?" He asks in a quiet voice, just like Keigo, only just loud enough to be heard within their little bubble of relative peace.
Hesitant golden brown eyes look up to him, almost begging to not have to repeat himself. He just doesn't want to guess at what Keigo said and get it wrong and make the boy think his opinions and desires mean nothing.
It takes another minute or so for Keigo to find his voice and confidence, while he moved them closer to the buildings that lined the sidewalk they were on. It was a little quieter and much less crowded than the middle of the sidewalk. "Walk, please? Outside is pretty and . . . my wings. . ." Keigo trails off and if there's anything he can take, it's a hint.
"Absolutely eyass. It is a pretty day out, isn't?" He thanks every star in the solar system that he made friends with Tokoyami and Kouda in high school. Being around the two soft spoken and animal friendly men, ensured that he was taught and shown all there was to know about birds and rodents and amphibians and the like. It was really going to pay off now with his new son having some bird characteristics.
Keigo turned a small but awed small at him. The boy really wasn't expecting for him to agree and go with his choice huh. Or maybe it's the use of bird terms?
Putting murder to the back of his mind he started towards his parents home, bypassing the bus that he was able to now confirm was packed to the gills with pedestrians. After the stop the crowd did thin out quite a bit which he could tell pleased Keigo thoroughly.
'It'll probably be a minute before he's comfortable with larger crowds. Probably going to have to ask Kat to just drop off everything and leave. Reintroduce Kat to Keigo at a later time. Mom, Dad, Pops, Eri and Toshi will be more than enough people right now. Okay there's a plan that doesn't involve murder. Introduce Keigo to the immediate family and then slowly bring in Kat and Sho and Toto and- yeah that'll be good. Not hit him with everyone all at once. Not after his whole life was just flipped upside down with being thrown in the middle of a villain attack as an eight year old and then being adopted away from the truly evil people that bought him and tortured him for four years which reminds me I'll need to get him a real therapist instead of what ever they were half assing in the-"
"Sir?" A small hand tugs on the front of his shirt and he blinks a few times to focus and realize that it was Keigo who was talking to him. Keigo who had his head tilted slightly like a curious bird. He readjusts his hold on the nearly weightless boy and doesn't try to hide his sheepish expression. He needs to be as open and honest with Keigo as possible to build some trust between them.
"Sorry. I tend to do that quite often. It's a habit from my childhood I could never really make myself quit. My parents, now your grandparents, told me growing up that my brain worked too fast and it just overflows sometimes." He gives a lingered glance down and sees golden eyes staring up at him like he was the most fascinating thing.
"Really? You're so smart it spills out? That's so cool." The blown away look in Keigo's eyes and the way he started to untense and relax in his arms made him want to add on to what he's said.
"Well that's what they said, and I trust them with everything, so I've got to believe them right?" An eager nod was his response which made him give a soft chuckle. "You know when I was younger, and sometimes even now, I'd write everything that spilled out into notebooks so I could go back and always remember what spilled out? It helped a lot when my friends needed help with their quirks or other heroes needed help. My dad and Papa even put a few of my ideas and spill over into their hero work. It was really cool to see the changes to their hero uniforms." The gasp when he said "hero" made him look down to a shell shocked Keigo.
"You have parents that are heroes?" Keigo's entire body was relaxed but his wings had ruffled a bit in, what he could tell was, excitement.
"Dad and Papa are heroes, yeah. Mom though is a lawyer. She works with people in bad places and people that get picked on for things they can't control and people that shouldn't have gone to jail. She helps people like you and my brother Hitoshi and little sister Eri. She's not a hero in the sense that Dad and Papa are but she's a hero nonetheless." Explaining his mom's work was a bit hard when explaining it to an eight year old but he figures that just simplifying words like "discrimination" and "excessive force and brutality" and not bringing up the words "abused" and "sexual harassment" were a good start. Inko Midoriya was a force to be reckoned with and all that apposed her fell to their knees before her in a court room.
His mom did not tolerate any type of bullshit in a court room setting.
At home though? When he and Toshi were younger and Eri had finally gotten comfortable around everyone? It was chaos.
Eri could rewind the rice pot back to springs and screws while Toshi slept on the kitchen table in his neon green sleeping bag and he himself blew up some random project in the garage and his mom would just scold them while praising their innovation and "finally getting some sleep" and "no baby, I'm not mad and it's not bad that you accidentally used your quirk on the rice pot when you sneezed. We just have to work on what happens when it does."
Lying and misbehaving never flew far in the house of Aiyama-Midoriya but chaos ran rampant on a daily.
Hopefully the family will be able to bring Keigo out of the shell he was placed into.
"She helps people like me?" Keigo ducked his head and he couldn't see what he was feeling but he could hear that he was contemplating what that meant.
"She sure does kiddo." He kept quit as Keigo tilted his head one way to the other and flexed his wings a few times. Whatever the kid was thinking about had to be important to him and he didn't want to ruin any type of whatever by trying to talk to him.
This went on till he was about two blocks away from his parents house. At that point they'd come upon the park that he Toshi and Kacchan would play at when they were kids and in their teen years. There were a few kids running around and when he looked down at Keigo who craned his neck to the side to be able to look over, he figured he'd ask. "Would you like to play for a few minutes?"
A twinkle took up residence in Keigo's eyes and he knew he chose right in asking. "Can I?" He was timid but excited and honestly? A person who could say no to that pleading face was a monster.
Midoriya Izuku was no monster.
"Of course, eyass. I'll be standing at that tree," He pointed out a tree near the play area that was close enough to keep an eye on Keigo but also far enough for his dad to be able to hear him when he called. "We can't stay very long right now but we can always come back." He made sure to let the blonde know that they weren't going to stay long before he set him down to run off and play. He's watched his dad make the mistake of trying to call out to Eri after he'd already put her down enough times to know that whatever he needed to tell his kid, needed to be said before they're set free to play to his heart's content.
Just like he thought, Keigo took off like a bullet towards the swings that were just vacated. He figured the boy would want to get on the one thing that could simulate being weightless and flying.
"I'll have to find a place where he can spread his wings and fly without restraints soon." He mutters under his breath before pulling his phone out of his back pocket and setting his duffle bag down beside him. His hero uniform was heavy with all his tactical gear but he had to change out of it before he walked out of the Commission building. No need to draw attention to himself when Keigo's beautiful bright red wings already do that.
His eye flick down to his phone to press his Dad's contact before they snap right back up and instantly lock on to Keigo who was starting to gain momentum with his kicks on the swing. Slowly going higher and high while the smile on his face got bigger and more serene.
"What kind of shit did you do this time, Problem Child?" Was his Dad's opening.
"Why do you assume I did something?" He counters.
"When don't you do some off the wall shit?" His dad launches back at him.
To that he had nothing. It was quite often that he was knee deep in some kind of crazy project or mission or new recipe he's trying out for dinner that he needs some kind or help or guidance or something. He normally calls his dad for all of that and his dad calls him in return and they both keep it to themselves because they refused to be on the tail end of Mom or Papa's jokes or teasing or laughter.
"You got me there. But why can't I just call you to say hey and that I love you and that you're the coolest most amazing underground hero to eve-"
"Did you kill the President of the United States and start a world war?" His dad cuts him off.
He stays silent for a few seconds just to make his dad question if he really did or not, then says, "Not the President I'm currently gunning for, Dad. But you are on the right track." He keeps his voice cheery just to hear his dad groan in exasperation.
"Fuck. Do I have to call Dad? Are we going to have to move in fear of retaliation?" His dad's voice sounded as equally concerned as it did sarcastic.
"I'll be calling Grandpa Nedzu, but it'll be later when I get you're new grandson settled at the apartment. Which reminds me do you have any suggestions in relators because we're going to nee-"
"My new what?" His dad doesn't lose composure often but he does with the shout he just unleashed over the phone.
"New grandson, Dad. Keep up old man." He can hear the way his dad no doubt rolls his eyes and scrubs his face. "At least I'm giving you guys a heads up. Remember when you brought home Toshi? And then Eri? Just straight up tried to sneak them into the house in your sleeping bag."
To this day he doesn't really know if his dad had thought his plan would actually work or if he just thought it was a funny way of announcing he'd adopted his two siblings hours after learning of Toshi's background with his biological parents and Eri being cleared to be released into an orphanage after her rescue. Toshi had fallen asleep in the yellow monstrosity his Dad called a sleeping bag while Eri couldn't stop giggling.
He wonders minutely if he should ask Keigo if he'd hop into a sleeping bag to keep up tradition before his dad is is talking again.
"Who in the hell did you adopt, Kid? How does you adopting a kid circle back to you wanting the President of the Hero Commission's head?" His dad is no doubt sporting that confused scowl right now.
"See there was a hero fight, right? Hawks and I were the closest to the situation so we met up there and moved in to handle it right? Well one of the criminals had a quirk that is kind of like Ri's quirk." He pauses to watch Keigo slow down on the swing and let another kid on before going behind them to give them a push.
His rage is boiling at the thought of such a sweet kid being robbed of their childhood.
"Izuku. You didn't." His dad's voice draws his mind back to his conversation. Eyes still on Keigo he just lets out a long "um" because he knows his dad's already figured everything out. "Fucking hell. You adopted Hawks. You, Izuku Midoriya, my first child, my very first problem child, pro hero Deku of the underground, high ranking government official, adopted Number One Pro Hero Hawks? Are you fucking kidding me kid? How have you not caused me a stroke yet? How? I don't understand it. How do you get into these situations?" He lets his dad process the information get all his ranting out, content to just watch Keigo run around with a big smile on his face.
He comes back to the conversation when he hears his dad resort to irritated grumbles that don't really resemble words anymore. "I did, yes. When he got hit, he was turned back to an eight year old. He was terrified and ran to me. I kept him on my back like I did Eri when we rescued her, that was a fun trip of fighting some PTSD flashbacks, and finished the fight. We were snatched up from in front of my agency. Couldn't get two step in before we had Commission guards ushering us into a blacked out van because they're extra like that. I was going to have him checked out with my personal agency medical staff but the Comm made sure that didn't happen. Long story short, Madam Pres admitted to buying Takami Keigo at the age of four from the Takami family."
His anger flared for a moment, then he watched as Keigo helped a little kid up who'd just fallen to their knees in the red mulch that surrounded the playground. 'He's safe now. They're never going to touch him again. The Aiyama-Midoriya family would reign hell fire before they ever did.' He reminds himself before he takes a deep breath and starts back up with his story.
"I was still in full hero uniform and had all my recordings going. I asked if they were willing to admit to the public that they bought him and own him like he's a slave and nothing more than property instead of a human being. Told them that if they didn't "let" me adopt Keigo then the first place I would be going would be to the public. Then I reminded them who I was. . . Who my connections are. . . My very own reach in society. The papers were slid over, Keigo released into my care, changed out of my suit and gear, and now we're at the park a block down from the house. Kacchan had called and I sent him to off to get some essentials that he'll need for at least tonight. He should be over there any moment now." Right as he says it, he hears his parent's doorbell ring in the background.
"I'll get it!" came from his mom before a surprised, "Katsuki! Oh it's so good to see you! What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be on patrol?" He hears his dad's clothes ruffle and scratch against the speaker of the phone when Kacchan's voice comes through next.
"Zuku asked me to drop a few things off to Dadzawa before I went in." He sends a silent thanks to his best friend and his quick thinking.
He'll have to do something for Kat for doing all of this for him.
"Thanks, Katsuki. I'll take that." There's a noise that sounds like the phone is being set down and Kacchan and his mom saying their goodbyes before the door thunks closed.
"What did you need Katsuki to bring over?" His mom sounds confused and curious.
His dad gives a hum, before it sounds like his dad gives his mom a kiss and say, "Don't worry. I'll show you in a bit." He guesses his mom takes that as a well enough answer because his dad is addressing him next. "How much shit did you tell Kat to get? There's two big heavy boxes here."
"Not much? Just some shirts and basketball shorts with drawstrings because I don't know what size would fit Keigo. Uh, extra toothbrush, some kid friendly toothpaste. I think I told him to get some socks? A pair of noise canceling headphones that would fit a kid, you know like the ones we gave Eri and Toshi when they first moved in? Mine from childhood, for Kacchan and his explosions, were thrown away a long time again so I didn't have any that would fit his head. I just have the ones in my gear to put on him right now. Anything else is just what Kat thought Keigo and I might need I guess." He honestly didn't tell Kacchan to get a whole lot so he doesn't understand why there would be two heavy boxes at his parents house right now.
"Makes sense. Katsuki normally has the brain cells you seem to lack and he's always been surprisingly good with kids." He and his dad stay silent for a moment just to contemplate the fact that Kacchan really was pretty amazing with kids. "Need me to do anything? Want me to come meet you before you get here or anything?"
He was ready and more than willing to appeal to the hidden question.
"Yeah, Dad. Could you bring me my sleeping bag? Gotta keep up with tradition. Oh! Could you also bring the noise canceling headphones? I know Papa is going to flip his shit over having a grandson." The smile on his face, and no doubt his Dad's as well, is a fond one. His Papa was. . .excited doesn't cover how his other father reacted to being told he was going to have a son, and then another son, and when he'd learned about Eri there were tears mixed into the commotion he'd created. His Papa proudly wore his emotions on his sleeve when he was with is family.
"Yeah, that'll probably be a good idea. There's still a bit of ringing in my ears from when I brought Eri home and that was years ago. I'll be there in a minute. Love you." With that his dad hung up the line.
Shoving his phone back into his pocket he continued to watch Keigo as he made it to the slides and laughed with another little girl. It was calming to see such a happy and carefree expression on Keigo's face. There was still a tension and he saw when golden eyes would pause to take in his surroundings and look at things and people in such close detail he was no doubt thinking about ways to disarm, incapacitate, evade, or break what he needed to get away at a moments notice. Saw the boy's smile go a little off kilter every now and then like he was confused that yet another new person was being nice to him every time a new kid came up to the little group that was starting to crowd aroun- Izuku quickly steps over to the small crowd of children when he notices Keigo's smile become more than just a little strained and finally fall off his face in favor of a near terrified look.
"Hey buddy, what's wrong?" He dips down to pick up the almost shaking boy and ignores every other child that's still throwing questions at Keigo. After hearing a question revolving around "Pro Hero Hawks' wings" he understood what was happening.
Making his way back to the tree he'd been standing at he sets Keigo down onto his feet and kneels down in front of him.
"Keigo, can you hear me?" He got a nod back and let out a small breath of relief.
"Do I have too. . ." Tears started to well up in the Keigo's eyes and he knows that damning children is not something you're supposed to do but dammit, those kids made his son cry. "Do I have to be. . .Hawks. . . .still? Like my. . .handlers want?"
Such a broken voice and wounded look should never be associated with a child. He pulled the small boy into his chest when the tears started to fall. He had one hand up at the back of Keigo's head, combing through the somewhat greasy and sweaty strands. His other hand was on the boy's back, rubbing soothing circles into it, just letting the eight year old silently cry into his shoulder.
He felt someone stop behind them, most likely his dad from how there weren't any alarms going off in his head from it. His Dad's presence idled up behind them, a few feet away, giving them privacy but also letting him know that he was there. He was so thankful for his situational awareness "training" he'd been through in his early childhood years and then the actual situational training he got in U.A..
Kneeling there with Keigo in his arms, he waited till he felt him calm before pulling back from him. Wiping the tear tracks from under Keigo's keen eyes, he makes sure he has the boy's full attention before he speaks. "There's is nothing you have to do that you don't want to do, Keigo. Not a single thing. Especially nothing that those people wanted. If you don't want to be a hero, don't want to be Hawks, or any other variation of what they were training you for, then you don't have to. You can be anything you want to be. Do anything you want to do. All I ask is that you stay healthy and do what makes you happy. I know we don't know each other very well right now, but you're my family." He pauses when Keigo looks up at him with genuine surprise. "You're my son Keigo. I'll do everything in my power, and then some, to make sure you are happy, healthy and safe."
Keigo lets out a little gasp and his breathing picks up slightly. "You promise?"
He brings his pointer finger up to his chest and makes an "x" over it before offering up his pinky. "Cross my heart and pinky promise. You can't break one let alone two. That's against the law." He tells Keigo in his most serious voice.
Keigo hesitates before bring his pinky up to link with his own. They shake on it twice for good measure before he sends a hand signal behind him, towards his Dad.
"Okay, now that we've made our promise with each other, I'd love for you to meet one of my favorite heroes. My dad, Eraserhead. Your new grandfather." He smiles when Keigo's head tilts once again in a curious bird like fashion.
Just like he thought, his dad comes to squat right next to him.
Still dressed in his hero uniform.
Scarf and all.
He internally rolls his eyes at his dad's choice in clothes. 'At least it's not the neon pink Hello Kitty sweat pants and equally as neon yellow "Put Your Hands Up" themed t-shirt from Papa's radio station. The only neon he was wearing was the green scrunchie that was keeping half his hair up and out of his face. For such a "dark" and "gloom" personality he portrays, he sure does love to wear bright and "fun" colors a lot.' He keeps his thoughts to himself and watches as Keigo looks over to Dad apprehensively.
"Hello there. I'm Shouta Aizawa. Izuku's dad." He doesn't try to stick his hand out to shake, probably remembering from when Keigo was older and used to side step anything having to do with his hands, and now that he's looking at them a little closer while they're fiddling with the tail of Keigo's shirt he can see some very familiar scars running along the boy's hands. Scars that had faded till being barely noticeable as he grew older.
Scars that lined Keigo's hands like they did his own.
Scars left from being snapped backwards, sideways, in half, cut into and a dozen other things that have resulted in needing compression gloves and numbing cream for when he goes to sleep because the pain and stiffness between his joints and in his bones never really stopped.
He just hopes that he'd been able to adopt Keigo before any type of permanent damage.
'Another tally added to reasons the commission needs to be brought to their knees.'
"Hello. I'm Keigo." He takes note of how the blonde doesn't give his previous family name. 'Probably a good thing I snagged those name change papers before I left then. I'll have to let him know he can change it once I get him settled.'
"It's very nice to meet you, Keigo. I know a lot has been going on for you today. Would you like to come meet Izuku's other parents? Your other grandparents? I'm pretty sure your grandma was making some cookies before I left the house to come get you guys." Keigo's eyes lit up with talk of cookies and nodded his head eagerly. "Well the house is right down the street. Let's go."
His dad offers his hand to Keigo as he stands but the boy shyly lifts both arms up to his scruffy looking dad.
He sees his dad's eyes melt as he bends at the waist to heft the boy onto his hip. His dad shoots him a concerned look when he readjusts Keigo in his arms and he just nods his head. A dark look passes over his dad's face before it dissolves back into a calm and almost bored look. His go to look when he's hiding his feelings.
"Alright. Let go see the rest of the family, shall we?"
