Story 2: Hide And Seek

It was one of those mornings where Nestor wouldn't be able to work on building a door. He usually had all the time in the world to focus on his task in peace and quiet, but this morning wasn't one of those mornings.

It was the day where Spyro didn't have to study anything from his other dads or himself. The green dragon wondered why his son was with him while he was working.

Sparx was by the side of the five years old dragon. He bowed and buzzed a few times that he was sorry that his friend was annoying him.

Nestor felt like everything was heavy on his shoulders. He tried to ignore it, but he couldn't cut the wood for the door yet.

"I'm boooored! Bored! Bored! Bored!" Spyro whined loudly by the side of his dad. He continued to whine.

The muscles of the leader of the Artisan Dragons tensed as his patience reached its limit. His eyes turned towards the child, "Enough Spyro. I am working right now. Just go and tell that to another of your dads. I'm sure Alvar has all the time to listen to you."

"Alvar is mean… And I'm bored," the purple dragon whined again.

The dragonfly apologised to the elder a few times and buzzed that the youngling didn't want to go anywhere else.

"I know. Spyro, I have no time to play with you," he told him.

"You never play with me," the young child replied as he tapped the ground with his paws. He whined and yelled, "I'm bored!"

"And I am busy building the door YOU burned down! You think Lindar forgot about it? He got the chill last night. You are lucky you aren't punished yet. Astor isn't here this time."

"It was an accident. I sneezed," the youngling whined, before returning to his 'bored' assault.

Nestor sighed loudly. He couldn't put the blame on the child. It was the very first time Spyro breath fire, two years later than most dragons.

He just wanted to be alone or in peace to finish his work, "Fine!" he stood up. He turned towards the youngling, "What do you want to play? I can finish my work later."

The child let out a large smile, "Hide and seek! Hide and seek! Hide and seek!" He began joyfully hopping around his dad, "We will have fun!"

"Why me?" the leader asked himself while Sparx tapped his shoulder, "Just the two of us?"

"Naw. You can ask the others. Not Alvar or Lindar. Alvar is meany and Lindar is angry," the child lightly twisted his head on the side. He grumbled as he thought about it.

"And you make me do all the work," Nestor groaned. He stopped when he realised, he was acting a little childish.

An hour later, three more dragons joined in the game.

Delbin, Argus and Gavin were the unfortunate dragons. The others had good enough excuse to avoid them or managed to hide from the carpenter.

"Why do we have to play this game?" Argus asked.

"He wanted more dragons," Nestor replied.

The red dragon tapped the shoulder of the youngling, "Told you. You can get your best dad to play with you."

The carpenter felt like fire was in his eyes as he approached Delbin, "So… It was your idea to annoy me with Spyro all this time?" He cracked his bones and pressed his finger on the snout of the painter, "What you have to say for yourself?"

"He wants to play with his best dad. You are his best dad. You didn't play with him for a long time," the red dragon innocently raised his shoulders.

Argus adjusted his glasses, "Agreed. I didn't see you playing with Spyro often."

"Enough," Nestor groaned.

The moment they said nothing, they heard the child hopping around them, "Let's play now! Let's play now!"

Delbin clapped his hands, "Okay. We made him long enough. We will play hide and seek! Who's the seeker?"

"Me! Memememememe!" The young purple dragon declared.

Sparx chuckled at the energy of his friend. It seemed like it was endless. From how little the child energy had in his eggs to now, it seemed like it turned around.

Spyro covered his eyes, "I'll count to twenty! No wings."

"We can't fly?" The blue dragon played with his mustaches.

"No. Not fair," the purple dragon whined.

"Okay kiddo!" he said.

"Can you?" Argus asked.

"Y-Yes!" the child pouted.

"Good luck Spyro!" Gavin said before running away.

"One… Duo…" he said a little uncertain.

The others quickly ran away expect Sparx who told them that he couldn't be quick without his wings. He buzzed that he made sure that Spyro counted to twenty.

After the youngling barely managed to reach twenty, thanks to the help of his best friend, put his paws away from his eyes and looked around, "Ready or not! Here I come!" he let out a cocky smile and rushed to find his four dads.

He quickly found Argus, who was too large to hide anywhere quickly enough, "Found you dad," he sounded like he was disappointed a little.

"You got me Spyro. Good job," he rubbed the forehead of the little dragon. He chuckled, "That give them some seconds to hide."

The purple dragon eyes shrunk. He realised his chubby dad distracted him. He quickly began to chase after his other dads. He looked around and searched for them. He knew they didn't go too far away. He passed near a tree and saw a hint of red in the leaves. He raised his head and saw the tail lightly outside of the leaves.

Spyro prepared himself and hopped on it. He held the tail with his paws and swung in midair, "Found you dad!"

Delbin chuckled, "Nice work Spyro. I hope you can find Nestor. I don't know where he went. I… I was certain he wouldn't go anywhere."

"Nestor is a fun dad," he replied before continuing his search. Sparx followed him and buzzed a few congratulations.

The search went on for a while. The young dragon wondered where his buffed dad and his favourite dad were hidden. He searched around.

He found Gavin pretty easily, but he couldn't blame him. His dad wasn't hidden, but it was because he was in an argument with Lindar.

"I was waiting outside of your shop for an hour and you aren't back! I need my coffee right now!" the gray dragon grumbled as he pointed at one of his watches.

"I'm sorry, but I'm playing with Spyro right now," he waved his hands a few times a little nervously.

"I need my coffee right now!" the white dragon face started to turn red.

The youngling really liked Gavin and decided to help him, "Found you dad," he smiled before waving at him.

"S-sorry. Lindar isn't- Ouch!"

Linda grabbed the mustaches and pulled it, "Coffee! Now!"

"He is really a coffee freak," he walked away to his shop.

"Just one last dad to find," Spyro clenched his paws before he went on the hunt.

He looked around and wondered where his dad was hiding. He didn't see any dragons.

Sparx reminded him that he wouldn't give a clue, even if he saw where the dragon went hiding.

"I don't need a clue. It's not fun," he smiled as he continued to search for his dad.

He continued his search. He ignored the dragons arguing against each other's about something being burned and wasted. He sniffed the ground for his green dad. He found nothing.

"Where is he…" he raised his head and noticed a flash of green on the ground. It was near a large rock.

He jumped on it and held it with his paws, "Got you dad!"

"Yeah," Nestor replied with a smile as he raised his child, "You got me," he gently put the youngling on the ground and put his hands on his hip, "I guess-"

"Its dads turn to search for me!"

The dragon prevented himself to drop his wings. He knew the game wasn't over and he would just annoy him to no end. He will have some help when he turned towards Argus who joined him.

"Where is Gavin?" the big dragon asked.

Delbin showed up, "Right. I don't see him anywhere."

"Lindar pulled him out of the game. We couldn't play together because he wanted his drinking thing," the purple dragon whined.

"I will talk to him later. I think it will be better if only three dads are after you," the red dragon raised his fingers and smiled.

"O-okay. Count and don't peek! Sparx. Stay with them and don't help them," Spyro ordered as he tapped the ground.

"We won't," Argus replied. They covered their eyes and turned their backs.

They began to count together.

Sparx did the same and stopped watching for his best friend. He wondered if everything would be okay without him. Still, he didn't have to worry in this peaceful realm.

After they finished counting, they said, "Ready or not! Here we come!"

They looked around and found no traces of the youngling.

"Forgot he is really good when he really tries and he is really trying right now," Delbin scratched his forehead and smirked.

"It will take a long time before I get back at my job," Nestor sighed.

"Enjoy some time with our son," the chubby dragon replied as he went on his way to search for the little dragon.

And hour passed and they still didn't find the little purple dragon. They searched everywhere for the little dragon. They found no one.

The dragons reunited after a while. Delbin, Sparx and Argus gazed at Nestor.

The green dragon breathing accelerated. He began to freak out, "Where is Spyro? Where is he hiding?" he looked around. He turned to the left and searched carefully for any traces of the purple dragon. He jumped to the right. His head went quickly anywhere, "Spyro! The game is over!"

That emotion was contagious and the other dragons began to freak out. It wasn't long before it spread in the entire Artisan realm. Every dragon was searching for the little dragons. Some a little more reluctant than the others.

Alvar was the only one wasn't searching for the little one. He sighed, "All of this because the child is too good at hiding. What did we become?"

Astor and Thor were slowly searching as their old bones wasn't allowing them to search like the others.

"Spyro!" Nestor run around as he was, somehow, sweating a lot, "I can't believe I let him out of sight. I will never forgive myself if anything happens to him," he sobbed.

Alvar sighed as he decided to prepare diner. He was certain the youngling wouldn't miss a meal for any reason. The child was annoying at most when he was hungry. In his kitchen, the red dragon went to his cauldron and opened it. He froze when he saw a purple thing in there. He looked closer, "S-Spyro?"

"Grumpy dad," the child replied innocently.

The red dragon put the lid back on.

"Let me out! I'm sorry dad!" the little one complained as he tried to escape.

Alvar released him and grabbed the little one, "Why didn't you show up?"

The youngling smiled, "I wouldn't let them trick me into showing myself so they can win the game."

The red dragon turned around and showed the little one how his dads were feelings, "Tricking you?"

"They are really trying to trick me," Spyro replied.

Alvar didn't want to try and convinced the child that they were really worried for him, "Nestor! I found the little rascal!"

A flash of green went towards then and grabbed the small purple dragon, "Spyro!" he then hugged the child, "You're alright! I thought you would get the worse," he let out a few tears of relieved. He squeezed the little one.

"Hard… T-to bre-breath d-d-dad," the little dragon tried to say.

Sparx waved his arms at the dad who hugged a little too much the child. He buzzed that he shouldn't hug him like that. He got no answers.

The other dragons came and were feeling the same way.

"Don't hug him that hard," Galvin warned him.

Nestor loosened his grasp, "You're okay."

"He was hiding in my cauldron. Even I wouldn't see him try that," Alvar crossed his arms, "If I wasn't about to prepare diner and search with you, he might show up for bed time. Maybe."

The green dragon rubbed his snout on the face of the child, "Don't ever do that again!"

"You tried to trick me," Spyro replied.

"What?" he squeezed the child a little more, "We didn't try to trick you. Every Artisans searched for you, not just me, Argus and Delbin."

The dragons nodded.

The little one was a little confused, "Really?"

Thor nodded, "Really."

"Hum… S-sorry," the child said.

Sparx suggested to do not hide that well next time.

"I'm the best," he pouted at his best friend.

"Anyway, move along. I'll prepare diner," Alvar returned in his kitchen.

The other dragons sighed as the red dragon acted as if this was just an annoyance.

Nestor put his child on his shoulders and let him hold on his neck nervously, "Next time, we will play a less scary game."

"Hum… Okay."

Sparx suggested to play games where he wouldn't worried everyone. The golden dragonfly flew forward as he buzzed to Nestor that he should also play more with his child.

"Yes," the two replied.

Spyro rubbed his face against the cheek of his dad with affection.

Next: Meeting the Peace Keepers.

Spyro meet the Peace Keepers for the first time when he was around two years old. Nestor wanted to be sure that they wouldn't influence the child, while the Peace Keepers wanted to satisfy their paternal instinct.
