After a bit Vera was filled in on just who Helen Cho was, and Vera had to admit it sounded daunting. It was nearing close to 7 in the morning when they finally decided to head out with a somewhat game plan.
"I'll take Natasha and Clint." Steve told Tony as they started walking towards the door. Vera followed closely behind them.
"Alright, strictly recon. I'll hit the NEXUS and join you as soon as I can." Tony turned to Vera then. "I think you should come with me for now, we don't wanna let Ultron know you're on the team, make it a surprise." Vera nodded at this.
"Smart tactics." She commented as he nodded with a smirk. Steve spoke then and they both turned to him.
"If Ultron is really building a body-" Tony finished for him.
"It'll be more powerful then any of us, maybe all of us." His voice was grim as he spoke. "An android designed by a robot."
"You know I really missed the days when the weirdest thing science ever created was me." He commented tiredly.
"I'll drop Banner off at the tower." Fury interrupted them as he walked into the entry way through the living room, shrugging on his jacket. "You care if I borrow Ms. Hill?" He asked Tony.
"She's all yours." Tony told him as Steve asked,
"What are you gonna do?"
"I don't know." Fury smirked. "Something dramatic I hope." Fury walked out then and Vera quickly gave Laura a hug and a kiss on the cheek before she walked out in pursuit of Fury.
"Is the best course of action me going with Tony?" She called to him as he stopped and turned to her.
"I don't see any better options. In the mean time Tony can brain storm and get you a fire resistant suit that may benefit you in battle. Lord knows what you're wearing now isn't fire proof." Vera chuckled at that.
"I just thought-"
"You'd be working under me and taking orders from me?" He asked as she nodded. "That's not how it works anymore Vera, you're not an agent and haven't been in 3 years." Vera pulled her fingers through her hair with a sigh.
"I know but.. it's weird. I'm not sure if I'm in agent mode or not. It took me a really long time to get out of agent mode and being back in action, planning, attacking.. It's bringing me back." She told him as he looked to her carefully.
"And do you think that's a bad thing or a good thing?" He asked. Vera was silent for a moment.
"I don't know." She told him truthfully. Fury stopped and put his hand on her shoulder comfortingly.
"I think you're scared because of how easily you shifted back into what you call, "agent mode."" He finger quoted. "But that's not necessarily a bad thing , V. Tell me when's the last time you've talked to someone besides Clint?" He asked then pointed a finger at her. "And don't say those drunks at the bar you tend at."
Vera sighed and looked around. "It's.. been awhile admittedly. Since.."
"Since Conrad passed." Fury finished for her. "Just because I don't say anything doesn't mean I haven't been checking in. Who do you think left the chocolate at your door everytime you were feeling especially depressed?" He smiled softly at her. "Just because I'm not your biological dad doesn't mean I don't care for you like a daughter. You were young when you were brought in by Shield, trailing behind Clint like a scared puppy dog."
"And I'll always be grateful for that." She murmured softly as he squeezed her shoulder.
"And I'll always be grateful you were brought into my life.. but the point is, this isn't a bad thing. You need a goal, a purpose, and you are being handed one. No more sulking around quietly in your apartment." He told her. Tony called out to her just as he finished saying this. "We'll talk more later, go." He shooed her away as Vera nodded to him then walked towards Stark.
"What were you two talking about?" Tony asked, glancing to her curiously as she followed him to a jet of sorts.
"Just catching up. It's been awhile since we've talked." She told him as he nodded as they got on.
"So.. you were an agent?" He asked as she nodded in confirmation.
"I was until early 2012." She said as he asked,
"What happened in 2012?" She sighed as she contemplated wether to answer him honestly or not.
"I got pregnant." Vera regretted answering him the moment she said it as turmoil set in her stomach like a stone.
"So you have a kid? Congratulations." Tony told her with a smile as she glanced to him with a grim face. The smile was instantly dropped off his face as he noticed her expression. Vera didn't know why she told him this, it was personal for her but she felt compelled to share it with him.
"I don't." Vera whispered as Tony flinched. "I lived right in the most active area during the attack on NewYork." Tony looked away as he rubbed his neck, his mind going a mile a minute at the information. After a minute of silence, he finally found words.
"I'm sorry." He muttered simply, internally kicking himself that that was all he could come up with and for the next hour it was silent, until they reached the NEXUS. "I shouldn't be more then 20 minutes, do you want to come with me?" He asked her as Vera shook her head.
"No, just fill me in when you've found out who it is. I'm gonna call Clint and see what's going on with the mission." She told him as he nodded.
"Smart. See I don't see why you don't wanna join the team, you're on the right track." He gave her a goofy grin as she rolled her eyes but smiled back, her cheeks warming up a bit at his grin.
"Yeah, yeah." She shooed him off and when he left, Vera pulled out her phone and called Clint.
"How's it going?" She asked as he didn't answer for a moment.
"It's.. going. We're in pursuit of Ultron and the cradle right now. I'll let you know when we got it, I have to go right now though." He told her quickly.
"Alright be careful." She lectured as he chuckled.
"Always am V." And then the line went dead. Vera felt electricity tingling at her fingertips as she held her phone for a moment then stuffed it back in her pocket. It was then that she realized that this was the most content that she had felt in a long while.
Being on the mission, doing something other then thinking about Conrad and the baby, it was a relief in a way. Just as Vera thought this, a wave of guilt overcame her and she took a moment to stop and take a deep breath. It was illogical to feel guilty for not feeling upset or to not think about them for a while but it still ate at her. Vera played with the necklace on her neck then brought it to her lips and kissed it gently.
Soon Tony was back as he had a look of contemplation on his face. "What'd you find out?" She asked as he scratched the back of his head with a pleased look, starting the jet.
"Well as it turns out, the person who's been helping us has actually been Jarvis this entire time." He murmured in amazement as he obviously was in deep thought about something.
"Who's Jarvis?" She asked in confusion as he finally turned his head to look at her.
"Jarvis," he started as he pulled out his phone and displayed a hologram of what looked to be a functioning brain of sorts but more.. artificial. "Is an A.I that I created a long time ago to help me with everyday life. As my needs grew, so did Jarvis."
"Hello." The monotone British voice spoke as Vera jolted slightly.
"Hello.." Vera said back, slightly bewildered.
"Jarvis this is Vera Barton, agent Barton's sister." He told the A.I.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance Ms. Barton." Jarvis said politely. Vera took notice of the fact that he almost had a real life like voice that held certain indications of emotion.
"Just call me Vera or V." She told the AI as Tony chuckled.
"You do realize that he's an AI?" Tony teased her as she rolled her eyes.
"Yeah but still. I hate when I'm addressed formally, makes me feel old." She grimaced as Tony chuckled.
"We need to get back to the Avengers tower, I have an idea that might be what we need to win this fight." He told her as he started the jet. Vera glanced at him in curiosity.
"And what's this idea?" She asked. He glanced at her in contemplation for a moment.
"It's controversial and I don't know how the rest of the team is gonna feel about this." He told her.
"I'm not the rest of the team technically so I don't have any say." Vera pointed out as Tony sighed.
"If we get that cradle back, instead of disassembling it, we could put Jarvis in it." He said to her as she sat for a moment, taking it in. "Jarvis has been working against Ultron from the start without even knowing it, who better to put in the body?" He told her as she found herself inexplicably agreeing with him.
"This may come to a shock to you and myself actually but.. that makes sense. You built Jarvis and know him like the back of your hand, he's your AI after all. I know that you made Ultron but you hadn't even begun to get any headway on it in the first place to build him the way you wanted to or even program him differently. I'm with you on this Stark."
Tony sighed in relief and smiled at her. "Yeah you should definitely be on the team. Don't tell Clint what's happening yet, I'm gonna talk to Banner when we get back and go from there."
Vera and Tony got back to the Avengers tower in record speed and conveniently when they got back, Clint was already there with the cradle and filled them in on what happened with Ultron taking Natasha. Vera felt the her heart drop to her stomach in anxiety at that.
"I'm gonna take the cradle to the lab." Clint told them as he walked past and squeezed Vera's shoulder comfortingly for a moment then walked away. Tony and Vera walked together, briefly stopping in the kitchen and getting a snack before heading to the lab.
"Any word on Nat?" Bruce asked as Tony and Vera made there way over.
"Haven't heard anything yet, but she's alive or else Ultron would be rubbin' our faces into it." Tony muttered as Clint jumped over the cradle.
"This is sealed tight." Clint told them as he peered into the cradle. Vera did the same as she looked at the body inside. It looked odd in a way.
"We're gonna need to access the program, break it down from within." Bruce told them as he leaned on the cradle." Tony didn't respond but quickly turned to Clint.
"Any chance Natasha would leave you a message? Outside the internet, old school spy stuff?" He asked. Clint put his hands on his hips in contemplation for a moment.
"Without a doubt. Yeah I'll find her." He said with resolve as he walked out and down the stairs, Tony watching him carefully until he was gone. Vera and Tony both turned to Bruce then and glanced at each other for a moment.
"I can work on tissue degeneration if you can fry whatever program Cho implanted." Bruce explained as he started fiddling with the cradle. Tony started scratching the back of his head as he stared at the cradle then Vera.
"Yeah.. about that." Tony trailed off as Bruce turned and looked up at him in confusion, briefly glancing at Vera too for a moment before he started piecing it together. Bruce fully turned around now as Tony said nothing.
"No." Bruce said quickly as Tony quickly spoke.
"You have to trust me on this." Tony started walking closer as he gestured around. Bruce walked backwards as he splayed his hands out saying,
"Kinda don't."
"Our ally, the guy protecting the militaries nuclear codes?" Tony pulled up Jarvis's AI as Bruce pinched the bridge of his nose. "I found him."
"Hello Dr. Banner." Jarvis spoke as Vera glanced between Tony and Bruce. Bruce turned to her with furrowed eyebrows then.
"You agree with him don't you? Otherwise you wouldn't be here." Bruce sighed in exasperation as Vera nodded sheepishly.
"Look Dr. Banner, I know with Tony's track record this might be insane but it makes sense, especially putting Jarvis in there."
"Ultron didn't go after Jarvis because he was angry, he attacked him because he was scared of what he can do." Tony told him, explaining his reasoning. "So Jarvis went underground, scattered, dumped his memory. But not his protocols." Tony adamantly spoke, staring Bruce down in hopes that he'd come around. "He didn't even know he was in there until I pieced him together!" He told him fervently.
Bruce scoffed with a sigh as he held his temple then looked over at Jarvis as he waved his hand towards Jarvis. "So you want me?" He pointed at himself then at Jarvis and the cradle. "To help you put Jarvis into this thing?" He asked incredulously.
"Noo!" Tony exclaimed with a slight mischievous smirk. "Of course not." He pushed himself off the cradle as he pointed to Bruce then the cradle. "I wanna help you put Jarvis in this thing." Bruce stared at him, his eyebrows raised as if to say 'the audacity', then he shook his head vigorously. Tony kept pushing though. "We're out of my field here, you know bio-organics better then anyone."
"And you just assume that Jarvis's operational matrix's can beat Ultron's?" He asked as he gestured around wildly.
"Jarvis has been beating him from inside without knowing it." Tony told him as he walked around the cradle towards Bruce. "This is the opportunity, we can create Ultron's perfect self without the homicidal glitches he thinks are his winning personality. We have to." Tony emphasized, his eyes blazing.
" I believe it's worth a go." Jarvis chimed in as Vera cracked a smile then.
"I'm in a loop! I'm caught in a time loop!" Bruce exclaimed as threw up his hands in frustration. "This is exactly where it all went wrong." He spoke forcefully as Tony tried to reassure him.
"I know, I know. Everyone's gonna say it but they've already been saying it. We're mad scientists." He patted Bruce's arm. "We're monsters buddy, we gotta own it." Tony gave him his best pep talk as Vera sighed at his poor choice of words, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Make a stand." Tony told him.
Bruce looked down in contemplation for a moment then sighed. "It's not a loop, it's the end of the line." Tony quietly told him as Bruce looked back up then looked at the cradle.
"Fine, let's get to work then." Bruce said as Vera sighed in relief.
"Man I thought you had lost him at the monster comment." Vera muttered to Tony as he grinned brazenly.
"Yeah, kind of thought I was selling myself out there but.. it worked." Bruce rolled his eyes at them.
"It wasn't any of the speech really, I just came to my own conclusion about it. Tony's right, it is the end of the line." Bruce muttered as he walked over to Vera. "I hope you don't mind but I pulled up your file while you were gone." Vera whipped her head to look at him in alarm as he quickly back tracked, putting his hands up in a peaceful gesture. "I didn't read about anything personal, I just wanted to see your accomplishments and saw you have a masters in technical engineering.. I was wondering if you wanna help? It might make this go faster." He explained as Vera raised her eyebrows at him with a sharp sigh.
"Yeah, I can help." She told him finally as he smiled in relief. He handed her some blue prints on how to reroute the mainframe and she got to work. They worked in silence for a while until Vera spoke up.
"So Dr. Banner," she started as he glanced up at her from his work.
"Call me Bruce." He said as she nodded slowly.
"Bruce.. Are you and my friend in a relationship?" She asked. Bruce quickly looked up in shock at that as Vera held up her hands in defense. "You dont have to answer, I just thought.." She trailed off.
"I.. I don't know what we are right now, it's complicated." He told her truthfully.
"Sorry, I don't mean to pry." Bruce looked at her for a moment and didn't say anything. Vera started getting back to work then, not wanting to disturb him until finally she sighed.
"This framework is not compatible." She told them as she kept rerouting it. Tony slid over to her and started helping her as Bruce spoke.
"This genetic coding is at 97%. You have got to upload that schematic in the next three minutes." Vera breathed deeply through her nose as she worked faster.
"I'm gonna say this once." Vera jumped as she looked up to see Steve and.. the two other enhanced standing behind him.
"How bout nonce." Tony shot back with a glare.
"Shut it down!" Steve demanded as Bruce glanced up.
"Nope, not gonna happen." Tony told him as he walked away to quickly do something.
"You don't know what you're doing, neither of you do." Steve looked to Bruce then and then to Vera pointedly.
"And you do?" Bruce retorted as Vera looked to him in surprise. "She's not in your head?" He pointed to the girl, Wanda was her name.
"I know your angry." Wanda started as Bruce smiled menacingly for a moment.
"Oh we're way past that. I could choke the life out of you and never turn a shade." He told her calmly. They stared each other down as Steve jumped in.
"Banner after everything that's happened-" He didn't get a chance to finish as Tony interrupted him.
"Is nothing compared to what's coming!" Tony turned around to face him with a glare.
"You don't know what's in there!" Wanda spoke desperately, looking around at them.
"How do you know what is?" Vera asked challengingly as she stepped up with a raised eyebrow. Wanda assessed her for a moment, her eyebrows furrowed. Suddenly in a blur, everything was unplugged and the other one, Pietro, stood there with one of the plugs and a smug face. Vera turned to him in anger then, throwing her hand up in the air.
"No no, go on. You were saying?" He asked when Vera shot out electricity at him just as a bullet came through the glass floor and he fell through. He fell to the floor below, shaking.
"Pietro!" Wanda called out in concern as she peered down below then turned her head to glare at Vera, taking a step forward. Vera's whole body started sparking angrily with electricity then, a blue light surrounding her as she sparked angrily, eyes glowing an eery electric white.
"Try me, head games. I read up on you and I'd suck the life out of you here and now if I had to." She snarled out as everyone looked to her in shock.
Tony turned around as the computer started beeping angrily at him. "I'm rerouting the upload." he quickly stated just as Steve threw his shield, effectively destroying the computer. Tony quickly summoned an iron hand and blasted Steve with it and he flew across the room. The rest of his armor started flying to him as Bruce suddenly grabbed Wanda as she tried to splay her hands to attack.
"Go ahead, piss me off." He muttered to her dangerously. Steve quickly rushed Tony then and punched him straight in the chest of his armor as Vera put her hand on the wall, phasing behind Steve, electrocuting him at medium power, watching him go down like a sack of potato's. Vera quickly ran over to the cradle just as Wanda used her powers on herself and they went through her, hitting Bruce.
No one had a chance to do anything else though as Vera pulled electricity through the building as the lights started pulsating off and on and she slammed her hands on the cradle, shaking with electricity just as a man with armor on, a red cape, and long blonde hair with a hammer jumped up on the cradle and held the hammer in the air, summoning what looked like electricity. Vera felt ten times stronger just being around him as she full blasted it and her body was engulfed in flames.
"THOR WAIT!" Bruce tried to say but it was too late as Vera let out a scream as electricity overwhelmed her and the man, Thor, shot it at the cradle. Everyone watched in awe as Vera crackled with electricity as Thor charged it with his hammer. He suddenly stopped and the cradle exploded, a man coming out of it and standing there, red and silver. He looked around in confusion then set his sights on Thor and lunged at him.
Thor threw him off quickly however, and he flew towards the window but stopped himself right before he hit it. Everything was silent as Vera used the flames to fly gently down to the living area and watched him carefully as Steve jumped down next to her and watched him too, both of them cautious as they glanced at one another nervously.
"I'm sorry.. that was.. odd." The man in front of them spoke as clothes appeared on him as he turned around. Thor looked to him in relief as the man looked at Thor's cape and one suddenly appeared on him, his slightly darker then Thor's.
"Thor." Steve said as he turned to look at him. "You helped create this?" He demanded to know why.
"He's not a this." Vera snapped out as Steve glanced at her then did a double take as she was still on fire, the flame an electric blue. It was only then that Vera glanced down at herself and realized she was naked, her clothes having burnt off. She knew the moment she stopped pulling electricity from the building, the flame would die down and they'd all notice.
"I've had a vision," He started urgently as he spoke. "A whirpool that sucks in all life and at it's center," Thor pointed at the gem in the middle of his forehead. "That." Everyone looked to it then in wonder.
"What, the gem?" Bruce asked as Thor turned to him.
"It's the mind stone, one of six of the most powerful stones in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capabilities." He explained.
"Then why would you-" Steve didn't get to finish.
"Stark is right." Thor interrupted him as everyone's eyebrows collectively raised.
"Ooh it's definitely the end times." Bruce breathed out as he glanced to Vera and she glanced back and they smirked together.
"The avengers can't defeat Ultron." Thor plainly spoke as the man added on,
"Not alone."
"Why does your vision sound like Jarvis?" Steve asked Tony, turning to him.
"We.. reconfigured Jarvis's matrix." Tony spoke distractedly as he watched as the man got closer. "To create something new."
"I think I've had my fill of new." Steve muttered tiredly, rubbing the back of his neck. Vera couldn't help but feel bad for him. She knew he saw it differently then her or Tony could have, only seeing another Ultron incident.
"You think I'm a child of Ultron." The man stated carefully as he turned his head from Tony to Steve, his face a look of calm and collected.
"You're not?" Steve challenged him, his eyebrows raised, his eyes looking at him pointedly.
"I'm not Ultron.. I'm not Jarvis- I am.. I am." He finally said, trying to search for the right words as Wanda finally spoke, her eyes burning a hole into him.
"I looked in your head and saw annhialtion." Wanda spat out as Clint walked in and rolled his eyes at her in agitation.
"Look again." The man told her patiently.
"Yeah you're approval means Jack to me." Clint grumbled as Vera sighed, finally having enough of the bickering back and forth.
"Come now kids, let's get along. We're all on the same side now." She told them, aiming her eyes at Clint as he rolled his eyes at her then looked at her in confusion.
"Why are you-" He was cut off when Vera put her finger to her lips quickly in alarm and widely motioned to her body with her eyes as he made a little 'o' with his mouth then closed his eyes trying not to laugh.
"Their powers, their horrors in our heads, Ultron himself, it all came from the mind stone." Thor explained to them. "And it's nothing compared to what it can unleash, but with it on our side.."
"Is it?" Steve snapped out as Vera opened her mouth to lecture Steve when he looked at her then quickly corrected himself. "Are you? On our side." He asked him directly.
"I don't think it's that simple." The man told them as he looked at all of them then looked at Vera and stopped for a moment, staring at her for a moment longer and she wondered if he knew she was naked.
"Well it better get real simple real fast." Clint warned. The man focused on Clint for a moment before walking towards the table.
"I'm on the side of life, Ultron isn't. He will end it all." He explained simply and Vera had to admire his level of calm but realized he wasn't an ordinary person, he was a synthezoid, somewhere in between human and artificial intelligence. She had to wonder how things were going to play out for him in the long term.
"What's he waiting for?" Tony asked the man as the man looked to Tony.
"You." He told him pointedly.
"Where?" Bruce asked him.
"Sokovia." Clint filled him in. "He's got Nat there too."
"If we're wrong about you.." Bruce started as he walked towards him, examining him carefully. "If you're the monster that Ultron made you to be.."
"What will you do?" The man asked him. Everyone was silent in the realization they could do nothing to him. "I don't want to kill Ultron." The man explained to them as he walked away in contemplation. "He's unique, and he's in pain. But that pain will roll over the earth so he must be destroyed. Every form he's built, every trace of his presence on the net. We have to act now and not one of us can do it without the other." He told them as he looked at his hands. "Maybe I am a monster, I don't think I'd know if I were one. I'm not what you are and not what you intended, so there may be no way for you to trust me but we need to go." He grabbed Thor's hammer then and held it out to him.
Everyone looked at him in shock as Thor grabbed the hammer in shock. "Right, well done." Thor patted Tony's shoulder as he walked off casually as if that didn't just happen.
"Oh crap." Vera muttered as she felt herself losing control of the electricity, knowing if she didn't stop then the building would experience a power outage with how long she'd been drawing from it and how much she had been drawing. The man quickly walked in front of her and shielded her as the fire extinguished. "Thank you." Vera told him quietly as everyone looked at him in confusion.
"What are you- Oh." Tony suddenly realized why he was shielding her body from them. "I'm gonna.. bring you a fire proof suit." He told Vera as he scratched the back of his neck for a second, glancing at what he could see from at his angle then straightened up as Vera cocked her head and pointedly stared at him. "Oh yeah, suit, right."
"That would be nice, perv." She responded with false cheer.
"Oh my." Steve turned away from her and him and stared at the wall. "When did you lose your clothes?" He asked as she snickered at his reaction as the twins peered at her in confusion.
"Fire burns things, including clothing." She told him as they all 'oooh'ed in response.
"Well.. um in that case I'll give you ten minutes. Get dressed and get what you need, that goes for all of you." He coughed awkwardly then quickly walked off, looking pointedly away from them.
"Why don't I take over?" Wanda offered as she looked at him.
"If you wish." He told her as he turned to Vera. "Thank you for defending me." He thanked her as he stared ahead of her, trying not to glance down.
"You're welcome." She smiled softly as Wanda wrapped her arms around Vera.
"Well this is a good as time as any to say I'm sorry." She told Wanda with a slight laugh at the situation. "I didn't mean what I said back there.. I just have an iffy past already." She explained as Wanda nodded.
"I understand... I try not to look into people's minds but your thoughts.. your memories were louder then most people and I saw in yours .. I'm so sorry." Wanda said honestly as Vera flinched.
"Er.. Thank you." Vera muttered as she looked away, uncomfortable with her knowing about her past. Tony walked back in the room and quickly then threw a suit at her as he turned around.
"There you go! As much as I wanna get a peak at that, gotta get ready!" He called as Vera laughed. Vera then examined the suit. It was a thick black material and the neck of the suit had a metal piece attached to it. Vera supposed that was to help conduct her electricity but she wasn't sure.
"Oh gosh how are we gonna shimmy our way to a private area so I can change?" She asked Wanda as Wanda grinned then laughed.
"I honestly don't know." Vera laughed then too and scratched the back of her head.
"Look away speedy." Vera finally said towards Pietro as he raised an eyebrow.
"What if I want to look?" He smirked as Clint grabbed his neck and turned him around roughly.
"She said look away." He muttered to him as Vera smirked.
"Alright let's.." she started putting on the suit quickly and zipped it up all the way. It had a high neck that was made out of a different material then the rest of the suit, maybe some type of rubber. "Alright how do I look?" She asked as Wanda and Pietro turned around to see her.
"You look badass sis." Clint told her with a side smile and she grinned.
"I like it, it makes you look like a superhero." Wanda said as Pietro stared at her.
"You- I can't say because your brother will try to put me in the ground for a second time." He said honestly as Vera laughed. It was skin tight and clung to her body well.
"I think it suits you well." The man told her and she smiled at him.
"By the way, what should we call you?" She asked. He was silent for a moment then finally turned his head to her.
"Vision." Vera grinned at him
"Thank you, Vision." Vera wiggled her toes on the floor as she said this, a little excited habit she had.
"Why don't we go find you some boots?" Wanda asked with a smirk.
"Yeahhhhh, sounds like a good idea." Vera responded.
(I figured Electro's suit from the Amazing Spider Man 2 would be fitting since she has an electrical ability)
