Chapter 2

I now sat by the chasm, in the same spot that I first kissed Tris in.

The memory alone was enough to make me smile.

I opened the ring box in my hand and stared down at it.

I'd just bought an engagement ring for Tris at the jewelers, and now I was debating on where and how I would 'pop' the question, so to speak. The ring itself was simple, but it had been the nicest thing I could afford. I wasn't rich.

It was just a small, square diamond on a golden band. The diamond itself was about one carat, and had two other tiny jems to the sides of it, giving it a more complex look. It would be beautiful.

"Four?" Zeke asked, pulling me from my thoughts.

He sat down next to me and I showed him the ring.

He let out a long, slow whistle.

"You're proposing to Tris?"

"Yeah."

"That's a beautiful ring," he decided. "I never thought I'd see you with one of those though."

I was silent for a moment before expressing my thoughts. It wasn't like me to talk about my feelings, which he'd learned along the way of becoming my friend.

"What if she says no, Z?"

"I think she'll say yes," he said. "Actually, I know she'll say yes. You've never seen the way you two look at each other, or heard the way she says your name. It's like the most precious thing in the world to her. She loves you, and you love her. Take the risk."

"How am I even supposed to do this? They never taught us in school."

"Just do it when the time is right,"

I closed the box and stuffed it back into my jacket pocket, bracing my head in my hands. He put a hand on my shoulder and I dropped my hands, suddenly feeling overwhelmed.

"Are you scared?"

"Terrified," I laughed. "I've never even considered marriage a possibility for me, but now I have Tris and I can't live without her."

"It's called love, dude."

Tris wriggled out of my embrace, smacking the alarm clock to turn it off.

She sat up and pulled the cover off of me. I groaned and pulled her back into my arms, kissing her neck. She let out a soft sigh but swatted me away.

"Tobias, we need to get up."

"No," I whispered.

Finally, we got up and went down to breakfast, grabbing a quick snack before going down to the training room. As a warm up, we fought each other.

She threw a punch and hit me in the side, jutting her elbow into my side. I gently swept my foot under hers, sending her to the ground. She grabbed my leg, pulling me down on top of her. Her hands snaked up to my neck. I brought my knee to rest between her legs and kissed her.

Her lips were chapped but warm and moist, sending shivers down my spine.

"On the mat? Really?" Uriah groaned.

We broke apart and I fell onto my side, laughing as Tris blushed a tomato red.

"The initiates are on their way back," Christina said. "I'd redo your hair if I were you, Tris. And Four? You have lipstick on your mouth."

I wiped aggressively at my mouth, getting laughs from everyone. Tris redid her hair quickly, following Christina's advice. I kissed her on the cheek and stood, offering my hand to her.

The initiates filed in.

Once everyone had lined up, I began today's lesson.

"Today you'll be learning how to throw knives," I said.

Tris nodded. "Four will be demonstrating. Watch his stance and how he holds the knife."

I took my place in front of the board, flipping the knife in my hand. Knife throwing was my personal talent, as were most forms of fighting. I loved the sport.

I threw the first knife and it hit the bullseyes, just like I had planned. Three more flew from my hands, all landing just beside the other. I turned to face the initiates, and they were staring. Then, we put them to work, having them throw their own knives as practice.

Only two people were doing decent; Parris and Anders, one Candor and one Erudite.

Christina and Uriah took their initiates with them, only letting them hang around here long enough to see me demonstrate today's task. Out of the four of us, I knew I was the best with knives.

I went to help Lee, who was struggling the most.

She welcomed the help.

I showed her the stance, arm movement, and proper way to grip the weapon. She hit her first bullseye, high-fived me, and I went off to help a different student.

"Luella's struggling," Tris said. "Most of them are."

"It's day two, babe," I whispered in her ear, getting a shaky breath in return.

"So what?"

"They aren't going to be soldiers immediately. We've got to help them out."

"True,"

I sighed against her ear, and she swallowed. Then I laughed, moving away from her entirely. There was something hilarious about her reactions when I teased her like that. But our relationship was a secret, and I was a good secret keeper. Most of the time.

She glared at me and muttered, "What a tease."

I finally got around to unpacking our last bag.

We'd been working on moving into our new apartment that came with being a leader. It was three times larger than my old, junky one I had this time last year. It had more than enough space with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, an office, a living room, a dining room, and an entire kitchen. You could say leaders live like royalty here at Dauntless.

Tris padded into the room, wrapping her arms around my waist. I closed the dresser drawer and turned to face her.

"Hey." she greeted, hand massaging the back of my neck. "Whatcha doing?"

"We are officially moved in,"

"You finally unpacked that last bag? We should celebrate."

"How?"

"With cake, obviously."

That night, after dinner, Christina dragged me out of the cafeteria. She crossed her arms once we got to the chasm. It was obvious that she didn't want to be heard.

"You weren't going to tell me?"

"Tell you what?"

"That you're proposing to Tris, Four!"

"You—what?"

She smiled. "I was helping your girlfriend pick out an outfit and found the ring. Details now."

"I don't have details," I said. "It was a spontaneous decision. I just figured that we've been together long enough, and I want her to be my wife."

"Thank you." She pulled me into a tight hug, head on my chest. "You've made her so happy."

When Christina pulled back, I showed her my wrist, on which I had gotten VI tattooed. VI were the roman numerals for six. I thought it was appropriate, considering Tris now went by Six for initiation.

"Ten," she said.

"Ten?"

"You need help proposing, don't you?"

".. Yes."

"Well, as you know, this has to be perfect. Are you thinking something romantic or cute? Or in between?"

I snorted. "I don't know, Christina. I want it to be private."

"Okay.. so maybe like a date? Take her somewhere special."

"And then what?"

"Don't make it suspicious. It needs to be a surprise. Then, you just whip out the ring and you better have a damn good proposal speech."

I frowned. "Why can't I just ask her?"

"Because it ruins the moment! Be romantic, Four."

"Okay," I said. "Be romantic, somewhere special. Got it."

She crossed her arms, looking at me like I'd forgotten something. Then it struck me and I smiled.

"Thank you,"

"Your manners are getting better." she observed.

"I want you to come with me, Tobias."

Tris sat on the coffee table across from me.

She'd just proposed the idea of going to see her parents in Abnegation, which I had been great with. But then she'd told me that she wanted me to come with her.

"Do you know what my chances of running into him are?"

She sighed. "Look, you're my boyfriend. Caleb is bringing his fiancée, and I can't just show up alone."

I wasn't sure of what I thought about going.

My worst enemy laid within that place, and I didn't really want to risk seeing him. And what if he tried to kidnap me so I could never leave? Sure, I'd learned to fight, but I'd probably panic and blank when I saw him.

But Tris… I would do anything for her, meaning my mind was made.

"When is it?"

"Tomorrow," she said. "Tomorrow night."

"Okay."

"Wait. You're agreeing?"

"Yes, Tris. I'll go with you."

She barreled into my arms, throwing her arms around my neck.

I laughed at her enthusiasm and she pulled back, looking me in the eyes. There was a certain spark in that moment. She leaned forward, lips brushing mine. I pulled her closer so that she was now straddling me. And then the door opened.

"Ew!" Uriah shrieked.

Zeke covered his brother's eyes. "What a baby."

Tris immediately got off of me, instead sitting next to me on the couch. I saw both of them eye Tris's bare ring finger and almost hit Zeke. He had definitely told Uriah. However, Tris didn't notice. In fact, she was blushing too intensely to have noticed.

"The door was locked," I said. "Did you pick it?"

"Well, neither of you were answering, and we were bored." Uriah explained. "Sorry."

Tris threw a pillow at him. "Well, find something else to do."

"No way."
