Chapter 1
The small torn up blanket he had been delivered with, was hardly enough to keep the small 5 year-old's teeth from chattering. It was December, Christmas night to be exact, and while his guardian's laughed and ate the wonderful smelling Christmas feast, he was left in his cupboard to endure another night of frigid temperatures on an empty stomach. He wished the pain in his stomach would have been strong enough to distract from the aches of his last beating. Alas, fate had never granted him much kindness. The blood stuck to his back pulled against his skin as he rolled to face the wall, in an attempt to go to sleep. Despite the pain he knew better than to make noise, and disturb the other occupants of the house, and so he remained silent, eyes squeezing shut as he leveled his breathing.
Dread filled his stomach as he heard the tell tale signs of everyone readying for bed. His eyes squeezed tighter, praying, that maybe he would be left alone tonight. It was Christmas...Maybe...Just maybe...The thud of his uncle coming down the stairs heavily told him his prayers were in vain. He buried his face in his blanket wanting to cry. Not again. Please not again. The locks began to click.
He had to think, and quickly. There was no way he could survive this again. He had to get out of here. It wasn't like his relatives would miss him if he left. He wouldn't let this happen. And with bravery he wasn't sure he was entirely feeling he waited for his uncle to open the door, and let his foot swing forward as hard as he could watching as his uncle fell to ground, hands clenching his groin in agony. The loud rumbling growl of pain and anger was enough to kick him into gear, and as fast as his little legs could carry him, he ran. He ran out the door and down the street, not stopping until his stomach and legs gave out on the side of the street near the park forest.
Tired, cold and weak from starvation and blood loss he crawled his way into the trees to hide himself from anyone that might have come looking for him and rested his back against a rock. Wrapping his arms around his knees he felt all of his adrenaline subside and couldn't fight back the silent tears that began to fall. He couldn't understand what he had done to deserve all of this.
~ Why do you cry child? ~ A hissed whisper echoed around the forest startled him from his thoughts. Looking around quickly and seeing no one, his heart pumped in his chest.
~ Who's there!?" He stood, grabbing a thick stick to use as a weapon, though he new it would likely do him little good.
~ I'm here. Do not be afraid young speaker. I will not harm you ~ As the hissing faded Harry was surprised to see a large snake raise it's head from the leaves which she had been hiding.
Surprised and a little startled he backed up a couple steps, only confusion and curiosity keeping his from running, ~ But...You're a snake. How can I understand you? Why should I trust you? You could eat me! ~ The snake gave what Harry thought might have been a laugh, though, that was absurd. Snakes don't laugh. But then… he shouldn't be able to understand it either.
~ You understand me because you are a speaker. Some humans have the rare ability, and you are one. You are able to speak and understand the snake language. As for the rest, I would not willingly harm a speaker. Among snakes, your ability is cherished. It is up to you whether or not you trust what I have said. Now I have answered your questions but you have yet to answer mine. Why do you cry? ~
The five year old stared at the snake for a moment before sighing heavily, still to weak to hold him self up for so long and sat down. He knew it was a dumb thing to do, but something in him told his she spoke the truth. ~ I ran away from home. My family doesn't like me, and they do terrible things to me. I haven't eaten in days, I think the lashings I received are infected and Im cold. But...I couldn't let him do it again. I just couldn't! ~ He hated himself as he was unable to contain another wave of tears.
The snake tilted her head ~ Couldn't let him do what? ~
Harry shook his head back and forth, ~ He touches me. And I hate it. I always feel so dirty after. He says I deserve it. For being a freak. ~
Slithering closer to the child her tongue flicked out, scenting his fear and anguish. Anguish so deep that while she knew not exactly what he was telling her, that a mere child should not have gone through it. Through his fear was something else and if they could have her eyes would have widened in her surprise. He smelled of her master, but different. Knowing she had no other choice she raised up, her eyes forcing him to look at her, ~ If you come with me, I will protect you and teach you all that I know. I will help you find food and warmth and one day, you will take your revenge on those that hurt you. ~
The boy sniffled and met her gaze, that feeling that he should trust her rearing it's head once more, and as though that feeling made his decision for him he nodded, ~ Okay...I'll go with you. I'm Harry. ~
Seemingly please the snake gave a nod of her head, ~ You can call me Nagini. Come now Harry. You must get further into the forest for the night and start a fire or you will freeze to death. I will find you some food. You will need your strength for what lies ahead. ~
Now much deeper into the forest, Nagini carefully instructed Harry on collecting the wood and fire stones he would need and was please when with a bit of time and effort, a small fire was built. Harry sighed as he basked in the warmth it brought, he bone slowly relaxing with the heat. While Harry warmed up, Nagini had managed to find a few birds and walked the boy through cleaning and cooking them. It was about an hour later that Harry and Nagini had rested, Harry happily eating he cooked birds and Nagini a couple rodents she found on her hunt for the child. Stomachs full and warm, Nagini coiled herself around the boy allowing him to rest into her, ~ Sleep now Harry. I will watch over you, for we wake early tomorrow. ~
With a small yawn Harry nodded ~ Thank you Nagini. For everything. ~
