Bella woke the next morning in a daze. She looked around the room. All the memories of the night before came back to her, and she just wanted to curl up and cry. She forced herself out of bed and looked around the room. There were some clean clothes placed on the dresser in the room. The room was pretty grand she realized. The furniture was older, antique style, and was beautiful. She loved the intricate design on the wood and realized that the detailed work was different runes. She only took a few moments to admire the room before changing into the clothes. They were a little tight, and she realized that they probably belonged to the woman that was with Jace and Alec at the club. The clothing was all black, and the top left little to the imagination, but it would have to work for now. She opened the door and looked around. She wondered where everyone was, so she wandered out into the hallway, and looked around. Jace rounded the corner, spotting Bella.

"You're awake." Jace commented, and Bella turned towards him, and he stopped. Izabell's clothes fit Bella too tight, but he wasn't going to complain. He realized that Bella had a beautiful figure, but he managed to not stare too much, and looked at her.

"Yes. I have to get to my sister, and Simon." Bella said, and looked around. "But I'm not sure…."

"Where is your sister staying? I'll go and get her."

"She's not just going to go with you. I'll go with you." Bella insisted.

"It's too dangerous for-"

"I'm not going to sit here idly and let everyone else do all the work. It's my mother that is missing, and Clary is my sister." Bella said, a little venom in her voice.

Jace studied her. "Fine, but you have to stay close to me, and you have to listen."

Bella nodded. "I promise."

Jace sighed. "Okay, come on." He said and they walked through the Institute until they got to the foyer.

"Where are you going?" Alec's voice called out to them, as he walked up.

"Going to get her sister." Jace said.

"What?"

"We have to bring her sister here too. She's in danger while being out there, and she's also a Shadowhunter. It's our duty." Jace explained, his voice defensive.

Alec shook his head. "I don't like any of this."

"You don't have to like it." Bella quipped. "I'm sorry if I have foiled whatever plans, it is you have, or interrupted the dynamic you have here, but I didn't ask for all of this to start happening. But right now, I need to find my mother, and my sister needs to be safe."

Alec looked at her, taken back by her brashness. "Don't get yourself killed." He said and looked at Jace.

"I won't." Jace said and then he turned, Bella following, leaving the Institute.

[Simon's Apartment]

Bella knocked on the front door, and Simon came and opened the door.

"Bella," Simon said, and then he pulled her into a hug, hugging her tight against him. "Luke called Clary, told her to stay away from the apartment, and to stay safe. He said the apartment is a crime scene right now. Why didn't you come here? Where were you?" he fired off questions, as he held her tight.

"I'm fine. Simon, too tight." She murmured and he released her. It was then that he realized she had a guy with her. He was dressed in all black, and his tattoos on his neck, and hand made Simon wary. "Where's Clary?"

"She's in the shower. I told her a shower would make her feel better. She passed out around three this morning, and she just woke up a little bit ago." Simon explained. "Who is this?"

"A friend." Bella said. "I need Clary to come with me."

Simon frowned. "Why don't you just stay here?"

"It's just easier Simon. I rather have her with me."

"Where are you staying?" Simon asked, staring at her. He was worried about what was going on.

"With me." Jace spoke. "It's important."

Bella nodded, looking over at Jace.

"Is this your new boyfriend Bella?" Simon asked, taken aback from Jace's tone.

Bella shut her eyes. "Simon, please. This isn't time for twenty questions. I-" her phone rang, and she pulled her phone from her pocket. "Luke!"

"Bella. I'm sorry for last night." Luke's voice sounded tired.

"It's fine, I just need to know what's happening." Bella said, turning her back to Simon and then Jace was reaching a hand out motioning for the phone. Bella hesitated, but handed Jace the phone.

"Jace Wayland." Jace said into the phone.

"Lucian Graymark. I know you know that name. Yes, I am who you think I am. I go by Luke Garroway now. Jocelyn was taken by Valentine's men. Clary and Bella are in danger. They need to be at the Institute, where it is safe. Talk to Victor Aldertree, the Clave counsel. He is the one who hid Jocelyn and Bella nineteen years ago while Jocelyn was pregnant with Clary. He was hiding her from Valentine. I trust that you are like your father. He wanted to stop Valentine too once upon a time." Luke said, dumping all that information on Jace.

"Yes, I do. They'll be safe with me. I promise that." Jace said with a nod.

Simon frowned. "Who is this guy?" He muttered to Bella.

"Good. Take them to the Institute. I'll call Bella again when I find out more. There is a warlock, Magnus Bane, that Jocelyn used to help place blocks in both Bella and Clary's minds. Seek him out, he should be able to help remove the blocks. It's important that Bella remember. She is the only one other than Jocelyn, that knows where the cup is." Luke explained.

Jace frowned. "Seriously?"

"Yes. I have to go for now. The apartment is still under surveillance and is an official crime scene. I have convinced the police here that Clary and Bella are staying with family and that they're safe." Luke said and then he hung up.

Jace sighed, handing Bella back her phone. "Apartment is still a crime scene, and you and Clary need to come back with me now."

Bella nodded, and looked up at Clary when she walked into the living room, a towel wrapped around her hair. "Clary." She said her name softly.

Clary went to Bella immediately, her arms wounding around her sister. "I was so worried. Luke told me to stay here until you got here."

"I'm sorry you were worried. Luke is going to find mom, we just have to stay safe. You're coming with me and Jace." Bella murmured.

Clary frowned, pulling back to look at the stranger in the living room. "Who is he?"

"Jace Wayland." Jace said. "We don't have much time to stand around and chit chat."

Simon scratched the back of his head, still looking confused. "I don't understand why you can't just stay here. I don't mind Bella, I swear it."

"It's too dangerous for them to stay here with you. They need to be placed in a safer environment that doesn't endanger others. Jocelyn has been kidnapped, and it was a targeted attack. We can't afford to keep Bella, and Clary here." Jace explained.

Clary shook her head. "but what about Simon?"

"If we're away, he'll be okay. We're the ones targeted Clare…" Bella murmured. "We have- "

"That's bullshit, Bella, I'll be fine. I don't care about if you're targets or not- "He cut off when the front door blew in, and Jace managed to push Simon out of the way, and Bella pulled Clary to the side.

A demon had managed to find them, and Jace pulled his blade from his side, and Bella did too, the same blade that she took from her mother's closet. The demon snapped its jaws at Jace, and lunged, but Jace dodged. A second demon appeared, which made this situation harder on Jace.

Bella looked to Simon. "Take Clary to the bathroom. Lock the door!" She shouted, and the demon lunged, and she stabbed at it, wounding it, but not killing it. Simon and Clary scrambled for the bathroom, almost in shock of what was happening.

Jace managed to pierce the chest of the first demon, and it dissolved. He looked over to Bella, who was avoiding the jaws of the other demon barely. Her strikes weren't deadly. He took the opportunity with the demon's distraction with Bella, to slice into it, killing it.

Bella was panting. "We need to get back to the Institute now." She said, and went to the bathroom, pulling open the door. "Come on, let's move before they bring more."

"What is going on?" Simon was the one to speak. Clary was too stunned to say anything.

Jace nodded, taking a device from his hip. "Yes, we need to move now. Simon must come with us now. He's not safe here either." He let out a sigh.

Bella nodded. "You're right." She looked at Clary. "We have to go now. I promise I'll explain everything when we get where we're going."

Clary just nodded, tears welling up in her eyes, but she blinked them away.

Jace and Bella helped Simon and Clary downstairs, and then caught a cab out. The ride to the institute was silent as they rode.

[The Institute]

Bella half limped into the institute. When she got to the foyer, she collapsed. Jace went down to her side immediately.

"What's wrong?" Jace asked, unsure what was going on.

Bella grit her teeth, pain shooting through her like liquid fire going through her veins, and she broke out into a hard sweat and she couldn't force herself to talk.

Alec appeared then. "What happened?" He asked, going to the ground beside Bella and Jace.

"I think she was bit." Jace muttered.

Alec didn't hesitate then, his hands moved over Bella's body, looking for the bite, he found blood on her side, and so he ripped open the front of her shirt. "Here." He said and then took a stele, and drew a rune over the bite.

Clary and Simon stood in shellshock as Alec did whatever it was, he did.

Bella felt the cool wash over her, as her wound started to heal with the rune that Alec put on her. She let out a breath, blinking a bit and looking over at Alec, who was staring down at her worried a little. "I'm okay. Thank you." She was laying on the floor, her shirt ripped open, exposing herself. She didn't much care about that at the moment.

Alec shrugged off his jacket and handed it to her. "I ripped your shirt." He said simply and stood.

Jace looked at Alec, confused a little. Why he would jump to help her so fast considering he was against Bella being there in the first place, but he would wait until later to talk about it. For now, he was going to focus on Clary and Simon, who were being thrown into a world that neither of them understood. "I'm sorry." He apologized to them.

Clary looked at Jace, taking in his appearance fully. He was wearing dark clothing like Bella had been wearing. His neck showed a tattoo, and his hair was slick back on his head. His eyes were an unusual golden amber color, and he looked to be really strong. She didn't understand who he was, or where they were, or why her sister was in the condition she was in.

Bella sat up, shrugging on Alec's jacket, and then tried to get to her feet. Alec reached out, his hands helping her to a standing position. His hand was around her waist as he steadied her. "Thank you." She murmured.

Alec nodded, taking his hands away from her, and looking to Jace. "You brought an extra person." His voice was back to the icy tone that he had held before, in the club when Bella discovered them.

"We were attacked by demons." Bella inputted before Jace could.

"They must have followed us there, or they already knew. Either way, Simon's apartment is not safe for him to return or for Clary. I spoke to Lucian Graymark." Jace said.

Alec took on a different look. One that was interested. "What did Graymark say?"

"To take them to the Institute, keep them safe. The Fairchild apartment is a crime scene now." Jace relayed.

"Fairchild?" Clary asked, her voice wavered a little.

Jace looked back at Clary, who looked just shocked and exhausted at the same time. "Your mother is Jocelyn Fairchild. A Shadowhunter. She was kidnapped." He said and looked to Bella.

"Clary…mom didn't get a chance to tell us all of this. Last night…she called me while we were at the club. She told me not to go home. That she should have told us about all of this. That she was found by Valentine. I know now who Valentine is." Bella said.

Clary shook her head. "Why wouldn't she tell us any of this?" Her voice rose as it shook. "Why wouldn't she tell us that we're some sort of supernatural halfbreed?"

"You're not halfbreeds." Jace said. "You're Shadowhunters. Both your mother and your father."

Clary shook her head. "I don't understand. Our father died in the war."

"He didn't Clary. Mom was protecting us from all this. She wanted a different life for us. She didn't want us to be afraid of this world. Unfortunately, we're part of it, and we must get her back. I need you to trust me. Trust Jace." Bella said. Just last night, if you asked her to trust a random stranger with tattoos covering their body, and who violently killed what appeared to be a man, she would have said no. Don't trust him, but under the circumstances, they didn't have a choice.

"Who's our father then?"

Hodge appeared then. "Valentine Morgenstern. He's the one who kidnapped your mother, and he's after you and your sister for whatever reason. It may have to do with the Mortal Cup."

Clary turned her attention to the newcomer. He wasn't old, but he was older than Alec and Jace at least. "Who?"

"Valentine Morgenstern…is our father." Bella said. "Luke told me to find a Magnus Bane, he's the warlock that put blocks in our memories."

Alec frowned. "Blocks?"

"Yes. Luke said that mom had him do blocks in our memories so we wouldn't remember the Shadowhunter world. I'm assuming the block is wearing off because I'm able to see you guys while cloaked, and the Shadowhunter rune. I painted it."

Clary looked at the runes closer. "She's right…" she stepped closer to Jace, grabbing his arm, and rolling his sleeve to reveal a rune on his wrist. "This rune…." She murmured.

Jace looked at his wrist. Clary's thin fingers were cool against his skin, gently caressing him as she inspected him.

"I've drawn this before." She murmured. "Strength?"

Jace looked at Alec, both astonished that she knew what the rune meant. "You can understand the runes?"

Bella grabbed Alec's wrist, turning it over and rolling his sleeve up. Alec froze, standing still as Bella studied his arm. "Yeah. Agility, endurance, protected…"

Alec looked at her, studying her face. She looked tired, but still had some light left in her eyes. She seemed to be just as confused about being able to understand the runes. She had never received real proper training. She was living in a mundane world. "How…"

"I'm not sure."

"Are you all going to stand around in the doorway? I got rooms prepared for everyone. We can talk about this later." Izabell's voice came from the top of the stairs.

Bella looked up, and then nodded. "Right. I want to…change. Thank you…Alec." She said and then she turned and headed up the stairs to the room that she was given last night. Her memory was really good for directions and what not, so it was easy for her to find her room. Clary and Simon were given rooms next to hers, so that made her feel better. She opened her door and went in. Izabell left her some more clothes. She changed, pulling her hair up in a ponytail to get it out of her way. The pants were tight like the other ones, and the shirt just as tight. She sighed, looking at herself in the mirror. Her boobs were more noticeable in this shirt, than the last one. She would have to get herself some other clothes. She couldn't just keep wearing Izabell's old clothes. She left her room, and knocked on Clary's door. She didn't answer, so that told her that she was somewhere else. She looked around, trying to figure out exactly where that could be. She started wandering down the hall.

"Hey." Jace's voice sounded, and that made Bella turn. He stopped short, taking in her appearance. Izabell gave her yet, more revealing clothes, and he had to force himself to not stare, again. "Everyone is in the command center." He offered.

"Ah, thank you. I would have wandered around aimlessly for hours probably." Bella tried a smile and followed him. She was a bit self-conscience of her appearance, and Jace's little stutter in the hallway, made her feel a little better, that she didn't look so bad.

Once in the command center, Clary and Simon were seated in rolling chairs, and Simon was spinning around, like he did when he was slightly nervous. Simon was the best friend that everyone wanted. He was kind, dorky, sarcastic, and loyal to a fault. He could also be protective of Clary.

Clary looked up at her Bella when she entered. "Are you okay?" Her sister never dressed this way, and it was actually refreshing to see some femininity in her sister once in a while. She knew that Bella was more conservative in her clothing choices than she was.

"Yeah, I'm fine. The healing rune worked. Just sore." Bella offered a small smile.

Simon looked to Bella, and then stopped spinning. "Wow."

"What?"

"I…uh…you look nice." Simon said lamely.

Clary slapped his arm. "That's my sister."

Bella chuckled. "Thanks Simon." She said and sat on the edge of a table. "So, what's the plan?"

Alec walked into the room, carrying a tablet looking thing. "No plan. I've reached out to the Clave. The Lightwoods have acting jurisdiction over the Brooklyn area. I'm recalling some Shadowhunters that are in the field. As far as Bella and Clary are concerned, they're to start some light training, so they can be useful in the field. Victor Aldertree has said that the Fairchilds were hidden by the Clave, from other Valentine sympathizers right after the war." He explained and looked up at everyone staring at him.

"You figure out all of this just now?" Jace asked.

"No, while you were gone fetching the other sister, I contacted the Clave. They gave me my orders. My orders are to ensure Bella's safety and protection."

It dawned on Jace then, why Alec moved to helped so fast. "I see, so if the Clave tells you its okay to save or help other Shadowhunters, it's okay. I tell you, that she's a Shadowhunter, you don't believe me, and give me hell about it."

Alec looked at Jace, his blue eyes looking at him sort of shocked that he would take this tone. "That's not it Jace."

"You and Izabell came back to the Institute, while I went and doubled back to- "

"Yes, against orders too, I'm the team lead, and you disregarded orders."

"If I hadn't then- "

"Then what?" Alec asked. "Bella killed the demon herself."

"That's not the point, and you know it." Jace said, his voice angry. "You think that everything just wraps up neat in this little bubble, but it's not that simple."

Alec shook his head. "I'm not going to argue this right now. Right now, it's clear what we have to do. I'm recalling the other Shadowhunters, we're building teams, and we'll look for Jocelyn Fairchild."

Jace nodded, and then he turned and left the command center, obviously fuming, or needing to blow some sort of steam off before he said something else.

Bella looked at Alec and shook her head. "Seriously?"

"What? Do you have more to add to his tantrum?" Alec asked.

"That Parabatai mark doesn't mean anything then." Bella scoffed, and then turned to follow Jace out. She tracked him down, grabbing his arm, and turning him to face her. "Jace."

Jace turned to look at her. "I did the right thing."

"I know you did."

"Why doesn't he see that? We're Shadowhunters. Our jobs are to protect the mundane world. We help other fellow Shadowhunters. Just because you didn't bear all these marks, didn't make you less than one. He was willing to gamble that you weren't, when so clearly you were." Jace looked pained.

Bella swallowed. "I'm sorry. I don't want you to be this upset with him. He's your Parabatai."

"How do you know?"

"Your mark." Bella pointed out. The mark on both Jace and Alec's neck were the same. The same Parabatai mark that bound them together. They were like brothers and would fight beside each other as such.

Jace nodded. "Well, sometimes he's got his head too far up his own ass to realize that."

Bella could see the anger, the pain that was flowing through Jace, and she reached out to him again. Her hand lay on his arm, and Jace stilled. His amber golden eyes fixed on her dark chocolate ones, and they stared at each other for a long moment. "Jace…"

Jace reached out, his hand going to her waist, and he drew her in close to him. It was as if he was in a trance, staring at the full beauty of her face, of her. He leaned in close, his mouth a hair from hers. What was he doing?

Bella felt her heart slam in her chest, as his mouth came close. She wasn't sure what was going through his mind. His lips brushed hers and she let it happen. She didn't fight it or try to push away. She let him kiss her. He shuddered slightly as he kissed her, his body reacting to hers, but she stepped away, looking down. "Um. Try to forgive him. It'll keep eating at you if you don't." she murmured and then she turned and left Jace standing there, looking a little confused.

Alec looked up when Bella entered again. Clary and Simon were gone. "Did you calm him down?"

"Alec, is it so bad to listen to him once in a while?" Bella asked.

Alec sighed. "I don't get to make decisions like he does. He thinks that it's easy for me to just conform to his ideas. I have an entire council to answer to, plus my parents. One mistake, and it can be devastating. I understand him. I understand what he wanted, and needed, but I couldn't just rush in blindly. I needed angles, I needed information, and I couldn't gather all of that while standing in the middle of the club. I came back here to get information from Hodge."

"What if I hadn't been able to kill the demon? What if Jace showing up would have saved me completely?" She asked.

Alec looked at her. "I don't know Bella."

"Do you think that what Jace did was wrong?"

"I think he's an idiot. He needs to follow orders…but not…he wasn't wrong." Alec said.

"Then admit that to him. Tell him that. He's your Parabatai."

Alec sighed. "You know way too much too fast. Are you sure there's a block in your mind?"

Bella frowned, trying to think about the past. She couldn't remember a time where she talked to her mother about any of this or recognized any of this world. "No, there's a block. I don't know why Clary and I can understand the runes. I…I know about the supernatural. I knew about it before I stumbled across you in the club."

"You've never interacted with demons though?" Alec asked, setting the tablet down and crossing his arms, looking at her.

"I dated a vampire." Bella confessed and then sighed. "Before you start on how dangerous vampires can be, Edward was…different. He's a daywalker. I dated him since high school. Clary doesn't know what he is…neither does anyone else. We broke up six months ago."

Alec found this interesting. "There are only few groups of daywalkers known to exist. What was his given name?"

"Edward Masen." Bella responded.

Alec shook his head. "He must he by himself. Does he have a clan? Or family?"

Bella shrugged. "In high school, he never spoke about his family, or having a clan. Even now, I don't think he has one. I believe he just stays to himself. He tries to blend in with society. Only drinks animal blood. That's the full extent of my knowledge when it comes to the supernatural."

"What we are…it's not supernatural. You get that right?" Alec asked.

"I know…. we're angelic. It's different." Bella said. "But this world is supernatural. You hunt demons."

Alec nodded. "Vampires are downworlders. We have a treaty in place with them, it's called the accords. If they don't hunt to kill the Mundanes in this world, then we don't hunt to kill them."

"That's refreshing to know." Bella muttered and then sighed. "I want to get rid of this block in my mind. I want to know more. Hodge mentioned something. Maybe I know more than I remember. What if removing the block can tell me more?"

"This is true. Removing the block, could bring back some memories that you didn't know you had. Either way, it's not going to change who you are now." Alec said and sighed. "Listen, I'm sorry that my attitude has been shit. You didn't ask for any of this."

Bella tilted her chin up, crossing her arms. "No, I didn't. But I'm taking it day by day. I have to. I have to remain strong because I have to find my mom, bring her home, and I have to protect Clary. I'm the older sister. I'm sure you would do the same for your sister."

Alec raised a brow. "You know Izabell is my sister."

"You favor each other. I assumed." Bella admitted.

"Izabell can handle herself."

Bella nodded. "I'm sure she can. But you would protect her. Just like I'm going to protect Clary. If that means my life, then so be it."

"You'd give your life?" Alec asked.

"I would." She didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, sizing Alec up. "Are you going to get in my way of finding my mother, and protecting my family?"

Alec looked down at her, her chocolate eyes held a fire in them, that he hadn't realized before. "I won't allow you to throw away your life. I'm not going to let you trot around the city wandering with no direction."

"I didn't ask your permission Alec. I'm telling you right now, that I will find my mother, and no one is going to stand in my way." Bella said, glaring up at him.

"You are the most frustrating girl I have ever met." Alec muttered. He took a step back. "Fine. But you will accept the help of the Clave and this institute. Losing your life ins unnecessary. We'll get your mother back."

Bella nodded. "I can agree to that. I just don't want you to sideline me because you think I'm not capable."

"You've gotten lucky so far with demons. You got bit today, and why Jace didn't realize that, I don't know."

"I have a high pain tolerance." Bella said simply.

"Still. You can't let it go unchecked. Demon bits are deadly, and we need them healed as soon as possible. Next time, don't get bit." Alec said.

Izabell returned. "Ah, those do fit you good."

Bella raised a brow. "They're entirely too tight."

"I don't think so. Makes your boobs look great." Izabell said with a smile.

Alec nearly choked. He had noticed that Bella was wearing tighter clothes, and that Izabell was the one to blame. He would be lying if he didn't notice her body. Even earlier in the foyer, when he ripped open her shirt, he noticed. He wasn't an idiot. He was simply confused as to why he found her attractive in that sense.

Izabell looked back at her brother. "What?"

"Nothing. Did you show Simon and Clary the kitchen?" Alec said, changing the subject.

"I did. They're eating now with Hodge. He's telling them Shadowhunter stuff. Get Clary acquainted with this life." Izabell said and plopped down in a chair. "So, it's not going to be so boring around here anymore, and luckily, I'm not the only girl." She beamed.

Bella smiled. "Well, considering Jace's hair, I figured you weren't the only princess here."

Alec stifled a laugh, but he couldn't fight the corners of his mouth turning up.

Izabell watched her brother. He never smiled, and that made her happy that he could relax enough to crack a smile, even at a small joke. "That's really funny. I'm not a princess."

"Ah got it, just Jace then." Bella said with a smile.

"Precisely." Izabell said with a smirk.

Jace wandered back in the control room. "I heard my name." He saw Alec smiling a little, looking over towards Bella, which confused him further. Alec was so frustrating; he couldn't figure out why he was acting like this.

Alec looked up at Jace, his smile faltering a little. "After lunch, show Clary and Bella some basics. I'll join. Izabell, do you think you can keep Simon out of trouble without molesting him?"

"I can try." Izabell said with a catlike smirk.

After lunch Alec and Jace took Clary and Bella to the training room. Izabell introduced them to some training clothes, which were tight fitting still. It was essentially just tight, spandex black shorts, and a black sports bra. Bella's had a purple stripe and Clary's was green. Clary was not as big busted as Bella, and it showed.

Bella wasn't sure what to expect. She did some stretching. She remembered doing some playful boxing with Luke growing up. She was starting to question everything though. Maybe those weren't her real memories. Other than that, Bella had no real background in fighting. She did a few classes in self defense when she started attending University, just so she would be able to somewhat help herself. She could be a fast learner though. She tried to get pictures of Edward out of her head. The way he cornered her before they broke up. He wanted to take the relationship to a new level with more intimacy, but Bella wasn't ready for sex at that time. She knew that if Clary hadn't come home, that maybe she wouldn't have gotten out of that situation, and she hated to think that Edward would do something like that, but he was acting strange towards the end of their relationship, so she couldn't be sure anymore. When he dumped her, and told her that he was just too dangerous, she was confused. She felt the world crash around her, and that it was suddenly harder to breathe without him, but she worked through that, and was trying to rely on herself and not on someone else. She wanted to be self dependent. She never wanted to feel that sort of pain again. So, that is why she would train hard. She would everything she w as into the training, because if she didn't, then she wouldn't be just failing herself. She would be failing Clary, and her mother.

"Jace, take Clary. Take it light." Alec said and Jace nodded, and paired up with Clary. Alec turned and faced Bella. "Okay, we're going to go over some forms. As Shadowhunters, we have to be fast, because we have to combat demons, who are, by nature, stronger than we are. That's why we use different runes. We have runes for everything, but we'll get to that. I want to do some strength and conditioning, first."

Bella nodded, understanding. "Got it."

Alec looked at Bella. She was in pretty descent shape, as was Clary, so this shouldn't be too hard, he speculated. "Okay, hands up, guarding stance." He said and surprisingly Bella took a decent guarding stance. "You said you grew up with Luke?"

"Yeah."

Alec nodded. It made sense. Luke was a Shadowhunter previously. He was teaching her without Bella realizing it, or remembering it really. He looked over her stance, and then he moved to adjust her stance a little. His hands went to her leg, widening her stance a little, and then he nodded. "Okay, try a few strikes in the air." He said and Bella punched a few times. Alec's hands went to her hips. "Twist when you strike." He said and she struck the air, his hands moving her hips as she twisted. "Good." He said and removed his hands.

Bella felt the cool air again when his hands left. She didn't realize how hot his hands had been.

"A few more times. When you twist with your hip, you're adding power." Alec explained. He watched her do more strikes like that, and he was satisfied with that improvement. He came to stand before her again. "Demons aren't going to face you head on usually. There are several different types of demons. The one you killed at your apartment, it was a ravener. They lack the intelligence to act on their own, which means that they have to be commanded by a higher power." He explained. "They're not easy to kill, but they're not the hardest of the demons to kill. You did get lucky, I want to clarify that."

"I get it." Bella blew out a breath of frustration. "What about the demon at Pandemonium? What kind of demon was he?"

"Eidolon demon. They can take humanoid shape. Makes them a harder target, but we have tracking devices that can identify them easier. After practice, you'll be able to recognize one without the device." Alec said. "Now, I'm going to strike at you. Try to block." He said and she took up her guarding stance again, and Alec slowly came at her. She blocked a couple of the hits, and felt like he could go faster. Alec seemed to understand this by her body cues, and he sped up his attacks, and she was doing okay. "Okay, you're not completely incompetent when it comes to this. Luke must have showed you more than I thought."

Bella frowned. "I'm not sure. Clary and I used to do like little boxing stuff with him, but I don't think he really showed us anything, and that was when we were little. Maybe…I was ten or so."

Clary looked over. "Yeah, Luke used to do these little play boxing matches and we had to box him, and he would show us how to move our feet, and use our hands to defend our heads." She explained.

Jace nodded. "Luke used to be Lucian Graymark. He was a Shadowhunter."

"Was?" Bella and Clary said at the same time.

"Yes. He was bit by a werewolf. Because Werewolves are downworlders, and Shadowhunters cannot have downworlder blood, he can no longer be a Shadowhunter. But he is still a great asset." Alec explained.

Bella frowned. "Luke isn't a werewolf, I think I would…" she trailed off.

"Do you know other werewolves?" Alec asked.

"No, but….Edward he would have said something right?" Bella asked.

"Why would Edward know?" Clary asked.

Bella looked at her sister, and swallowed. "Because Edward is a vampire." She said.

"Wait, you know about a supernatural world, and you never bothered to tell me?" Clary asked, shocked.

"It wasn't my secret to tell Clare…."She murmured.

Clary shook her head. "I'm your sister…you tell me everything."

"No I don't Clary."

"Right, so this whole time I tell you everything, even exactly how I'm feeling, and you return the favor by keeping all these secrets?"

Bella shook her head. "Clary, that's not it. I wanted to tell you everything but I couldn't. I didn't want to wor-"

"I'm your sister!" Clary exclaimed, throwing her hands up.

"You wanted me to tell you that after 4 years of dating a vampire, he tried to rape me! That he tore my heart out when he left me because he couldn't stand to be with me? That it was too dangerous? You wanted to know all of this? To know that your older sister was weak? That I couldn't protect myself?" Bella said, looking at Clary, her voice was shaking, but the tears were still at bay.

Clary looked at Bella. "He what? Bella, those are things you do tell your sister. So I can kick his ass."

"Exactly! He's a fucking vampire Clare! If I could barely fight him off, what makes you think that you could?" Bella shook her head, rubbing her hands over her face. "I loved him Clary. I felt my whole world buckle from under me. He gave up on us. He gave up on me. Despite him…despite him doing what he did, I still believed in him. I still believed that he could fight his nature." Her voice wavered.

"You could have told me." Clary's voice was soft now.

"I couldn't." Bella shook her head. "I want to protect you from all- "

"You don't have to! I'm an adult Bella, I can handle these things."

Bella looked away. Maybe Clary was right. She should have told her what she was going through. "Okay. I should have told you. I'm sorry." She said, looking back at her sister. "I'm sorry."

Clary moved to her sister and hugged her close. Bella was slightly taller than Clary, so Clary lay her head on Bella's shoulder. "I love you." Clary murmured.

"I love you too." Bella said. "I promise. No more secrets."

Clary nodded. "Good."

Alec looked at Bella, feeling some sort of anger for some reason. He didn't understand why anyone would try to force themselves on someone else. That was always something that he despised the most. But he didn't say anything.

Jace was the one with the big mouth. "Are you okay?" He asked Bella, his honey amber eyes searching hers for a response.

Bella nodded. "I am. Thank you for asking." She said and sighed. "Let's just train some more. I'm sorry for…the display."

Alec waved a hand. "It's fine." He said, his voice sounding angrier than he intended.

They resumed their training, this time, they were silent as they moved. Alec was trying to process everything he heard, and why he felt the way he did now.
