Chapter 2

A week has passed after the disheartening phone call between Sheldon and Amy. The rest of the group are worried about their friends but everyone kept their distance. From time to time, Penny and Leonard check up on Sheldon to see how he's doing but he gave them no reason to worry. They can tell that he's still hurting but he seems to be doing okay. He was back into his old routine only this time, without Amy.

Amy, on the other hand seems to be distant, she declined a few invitations for group dinner and it wasn't until Penny paid a surprise visit to her lab that she found out Amy took time off from work. Penny has been worried sick about her best friend, the last message she got from Amy was when she asked her to look after Sheldon – a text that made Penny panic as it sounded like she's leaving. She hasn't been answering her calls and texts and according to the doorman at her apartment; Amy hasn't been home for a week now. Penny asked Bernadette to reach out to her and try her luck but to no avail.

After they got back from their spur of the moment Vegas Wedding, Penny promised Leonard that they will be spending more time together to talk and work on their marriage after Leonard's confession to Penny just right before they got married. But they are both preoccupied on looking out for Sheldon. They were certain that anything that triggers Sheldon will cause him to fall apart. Penny has been obsessing about their friends' well being when she herself is also hurting. She needed Amy. She knows she can always talk to Bernadette but it's not the same without Amy. She misses her smart, sharp, funny and beautiful best friend. Nothing is the same without her.

Miles away from Pasadena, Amy was just driving home from her short vacation at her Aunt in Bakersfield. She didn't really planned on staying that long but she figured maybe a change in scenery will be good for her. While she was there, she thought about a lot of things. Would a move across country be possible? She's not sure if she could just drop everything and leave California, she liked living in California, and she liked working at Caltech. Well, that was before the break-up. Now? She doesn't know anymore.

"Where do I go from here?" Amy groaned. A question she kept asking herself, only this time she said it out loud.

Why did I let myself get into this situation?

I should've never gone to that first date instead, stupid online dating site!

I should've never let myself fall in love with him.

Amy felt like her feelings are just getting worse, she did not get the healing she was hoping for by getting away. She knew it will take time but she was hoping maybe after leaving Glendale even for a bit, it will at least lessen the pain that has been consuming her. She feel like the more she drove close to home, the more she's drawn close to the reality of having to face Sheldon again sooner rather than later and that terrifies her.

Sheldon sent her 2 messages 3 days after their phone call

"Would you be joining us for our weekly group dinner?"

Amy ignored Sheldon's text. She didn't know what's going through his mind.

Did he honestly believe I can stand seeing him after he turned me down?

How is he fine with all of this? I am ruined!

The next message really made her blood boil

"If some of Fred Flintstone's neurotransmitters could talk, what would they say? GABA-daba-doo! Lol. I thought you might enjoy this Neuroscience joke."

What is he doing?

The fact that Sheldon casually sent her a text made her angry. She just couldn't figure out if she's mad at him or herself. She knew the breakup was hard for Sheldon as it was for her. Of course it was. That was five years of their lives together; she had given 5 years of her life with Sheldon. She just came to the point where she felt like they're not moving forward and it frustrates her. It hurts that after 5 years, she's still not Sheldon's top priority, maybe not even at his top 5. After spending a day with him at the aquarium, she realized how much she misses him, how much she enjoyed spending time with him and thought maybe she can get past through her feelings of doubts and just get back together and move at Sheldon's pace.

Coming back to the present, she was just pulling into her parking space when she heard a ping from her phone. She parked and turned the engine off before pulling out her phone from her purse. Her eyes widened in disbelief when she saw the message was from Sheldon. She rolled her eyes in annoyance and groaned. Sheldon? What does he want this time?

"Amy, I recently became aware that you were also not responding to any forms of Penny's attempt to communicate. We are your friends and we're all very worried about you."

Friends? She thought. Then, Sheldon words came to her mind.

"I think I need to just be your friend..."

In that moment, she realized why Sheldon is acting that way. He wanted to be friends. But why does it seem so easy for him?

She then gathered her things and went up to her apartment.

Back at the Los Robles apartment, the group gathered around the coffee table like they used to, only this time without Amy. The guys are planning to go on an unscheduled visit to the comic book store to check out new releases, their excitement waned when they notice Sheldon wasn't paying attention. Penny and Bernadette exchanged glances and sighs occasionally eyeing the genius Physicist.

"So, anyone heard from Amy?" Raj asked, breaking the tension.

Sheldon gazed his friends when he heard Amy's name. Everyone remained quiet.

Finally, Sheldon spoke, his voice as cold as ice. "I sent her text messages a few days after we spoke in the phone..."

"And?" Penny added, her voice full on anticipation. All eyes are on Sheldon now.

"She did not respond on both of my messages." Sheldon continued. He went back to eating his food while his friends shook their heads.

"I miss Amy so much! It's not the same without her. She's not answering any of my calls and texts either." Bernadette whispered trying not to cry. Howard rubbed his wife's back trying to comfort her. "It's okay honey, maybe Amy needs more time. I'm sure she will reach out to us when she's ready."

"I don't understand..." Sheldon said frowning. "Why did she need time? If it were because of what happened to us, I don't see anything wrong. We already agreed that we could still be friends."

The room remained quiet and it went on like that the entire evening. Howard and Raj simultaneously attempted to change the topic to lighten the mood but everyone seemed so tense – afraid that anything they say or do might trigger a meltdown from Sheldon.

The next day after that awfully quiet dinner at their apartment, Sheldon and Leonard spotted Amy's car at the University parking. Neither of the Physicists attempted to say a thing. Leonard informed Penny that they saw Amy's car and she's probably back at work already, he's aware that his wife have been worried sick about her best friend as he is with his own best friend.
