Disclaimer I don't own Naruto/Boruto
Mistake:
Naruto's words hit Shikamaru like a freight train, "No," he whimpered.
The Seventh Hokage looked at his friend sympathetically, "I'm so sorry, Shikamaru" he said.
Shikamaru looked pleadingly at his friend, "Where is he? Where's my baby," he said.
Naruto sighed, "they're staying at the Fire capitals hospital. Shikamaru, why don't Temari and you go and meet them there. I'll send Sai, Ino, Choji, and Karui with you." he said.
The shadow user could only nod numbly as he left his office to go tell Temari and his mother the awful news. The journey home was a painful one, as he had no idea what he was going to say. As he continued home, he saw a father and son duo walking home together and vaguely wondered if he would ever get to do that with Shikadai again.
As his home came into view a thought occurred to him that Shikadai wasn't dead yet, which meant that there was still a chance his boy could make it. Maybe Moegi had misunderstood what the doctors meant and had over-exaggerated to Naruto. In that case, he needed to get his ass home and tell Temari so they could hurry and get to Shikadai. For the first time since Naruto had broken the news to him, he felt hopeful.
Opening the door of his home he could hear Temari walking around most likely cleaning. When she heard the door of the house open she appeared looking at her husband worriedly, "What's wrong?" she asked, knowing her husband was never home early unless something was wrong.
Shikamaru sighed and looked sadly at his wife, "It's Shikadai," he said.
Temari marched over to her husband and looked at him troubled, "What about Shikadai?" she said.
Shikamaru looked at her with such a distraught expression that Temari felt her heart begin to pound. Gently, Shikamaru pulled her into a hug, "Temari listen to me, the client that hired Shikadai and his team lied about the mission rank," he began as he felt his wife tense.
Temari looked up at Shikamaru, "Lied about the mission rank? What rank was it?" she asked.
Shikamaru sighed, "An S," he said.
Temari looked horrified before her face shifted to one of absolute anger, "An S? The fucking bastard lied about the rank and sent my baby whose barely a genin on an S rank?" she said.
Shikamaru nodded, "That's not all though, Tem. Shikadai and his team were ambushed by rogue shinobi," he said gulping to force himself to continue, "Tem, Shikadai is hurt bad, real bad, we have to get to the Capital now," he said.
Temari looked like she was about to hyperventilate, "Hurt? How bad is he hurt Shika?" she asked.
Shikamaru swallowed back the lump forming in his throat, "I didn't get to talk to Moegi, but she told Naruto that Shikadai took a hit for Inojin." he said, taking a breath to collect his thoughts, Temari taking in his every word.
Shikamaru continued, "The hit it- it broke his back and neck, and he has a severe head wound," he said.
Temari gasped, "Oh god," she said.
Shikamaru looked at her sternly, "We have to go to the capital since none of the team is well enough to travel," he said.
Temari nodded numbly before pushing away from her husband to go get ready, Shikamaru right behind her. The couple packed in silence, neither one wanting to voice their thoughts and worries about the impending loss of their child. Just as they were heading towards the door, there was a knock. Shikamaru opened it to see Sai standing there, a stony look on his face, "Let's go," was all he said.
The three met up with Choji, Ino, and Karui at the front gate; they all looked just as grim as Shikamaru felt. Sai, who wasn't in the mood to wait looked at everyone, "Let's go," he said taking off. The other followed behind him.
It took the group about five hours to reach the fire capital and most of it was spent in silence as none of the group had the energy to talk, especially not when their children were hurt.
The group reached the fire capital by seven-thirty in the evening and they immediately headed to the hospital. Once they arrived, they found it to be busy despite the late hour. Shikamaru marched up to the nurses' station, "Excuse me, I'm looking for Shikadai Nara?" he asked.
The nurse looked up at him questionably, "May I ask who's asking?" she said.
Shikamaru looked at her annoyed, "His Father," he said, resisting the urge to growl.
The nurse wasn't phased one bit by the man's outburst since she was used to worried family members getting rowdy, "Aww yes Nara, I'll show you to where your son is, Minako show the others to their children," she said.
The nurse turned back to Shikamaru, "Mr. and Mrs. Nara, please follow me," she said.
Shikamaru and Temari ran after her, both worried sick wondering what condition their child was in. The nurse looked over her shoulder, "The medics have worked on him and have made him as comfortable as possible," she said.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the group reached the ICU; however, the Nara's were confused why the nurse had led them to the burn unit. Temari looked sharply at the nurse, "Excuse me ma'am but why are we at the burn unit?" she asked.
The nurse looked at them concerned, "Oh I'm sorry, I- thought you were told," she said.
Shikamaru sent her an icy glare, "Told what? All we were told was that our son received a serious spinal and neck injury along with a head wound. We were told nothing about him being burned," he said.
The nurse sighed this was the part of her job that she hated. "I'm sorry sir, but your son was caught up in an explosion. He sustained severe burns on top of the injuries you listed," she said.
Temari gasped and Shikamaru felt like his heart was about to come out of his chest. The shadow user looked pleadingly at the nurse, "Please let us see him," he whispered.
The nurse nodded, opening the door of a dark room, "He's in here, we turned the lights down to try and keep him comfortable," she said.
The worried parents nodded and then they went inside.
