After a Year in the Life - Chapter 2

Author's note: sorry this chapter is short but I update more regularly with short chapters so hopefully frequent updates will make up for it. Please leave a review if you like the story.

As Rory sat looking out the window of the airplane she couldn't help but wonder if she was making the right decision. But now that the plane was descending into London was not the time to be second-guessing her choices. She was here and had to go through with it now.

When the plan landed Rory turned her phone back on. She quickly texted Logan "Call me when you get a chance."

Within seconds her phone rang. 'At least I didn't have to wait' she thought as she took a deep breath and answered the phone.

"Thank you for calling me back."

"What's wrong Ace?"

"I need to talk to you in person. I'm going to stay at my usual hotel, can you meet me there tonight?"

There was a pause, "Your here?"

"Yeah, I just have something I need to tell you in person. I'm not staying long."

"Tell you what Ace, why don't you just come over here around 7 and I'll make you something to eat."

"Uh, sure but what about Odette?"

"She's not here," Logan answered in a tone she knew meant he wasn't going to tell her anything more.

"Oh, well, uh okay then. 7 at your place."

"I look forward to it."

'Yeah. Me too." She lied as she hung up the phone.

It was 6:40 pm in London and Rory was questioning her life decisions more and more with each passing second as she sat in the cab. How was she possibly going to have this conversation with Logan? At 6:52 the cab pulled up in front of her destination. She quickly paid the driver and got out of the car. She paused on the sidewalk for a moment, rehearsing what she had planned to say. She took a deep breath and walked towards the door, a sick feeling in her stomach that had nothing to with being pregnant threatened to overwhelm her.

She knocked on the door and was puzzled when no one answered. She waited a few minutes and knocked again. This time there was a shuffling sound and finally, Logan opened the door.

"Hey there Ace." Said a disheveled-looking Logan.

"Logan."

"Come on in." He stepped back so she could enter the house and she saw that the place was a mess. "Sorry...my dad just passed away so I've been swamped handling his business and haven't had the maid coming lately."

"Oh, Logan. I had no idea. When...did it happen?" Rory reached out to put her hand on his shoulder and suddenly found him pulling her in for a hug which she did not resist.

"A week ago tomorrow. They suspected murder at first so we had to keep it quiet from the press until we knew what was going on."

Rory gasped, no wonder her grandmother hadn't mentioned that Mitchem had passed. "I'm so sorry."

"The results came back yesterday though...it was suicide. He did it... on purpose." Logan's voice was shaking by the end of the sentence. Rory took his hand and lead him to the couch. "Can I get you something to drink?" She asked him as he shakily lowered himself to the couch. He shook his head and patted the couch next to him. "Just sit. Please?"

Rory as Rory sat he began to cry and she wrapped her arms around him. "I'm sorry." He muttered into her hair, she could feel his tears running down his cheeks into her hair.

"Logan? Where's Odette?" She finally blurted out unable to find a more tactful way to say what had been on her mind since she got here.

"Gone. I set her free. I set me free."

"Logan are you drunk?"

"Only a little. It doesn't matter. But Rory don't you see? My father was never happy. He was rich, sure. But never really happy. He and my mom hated each other and only stayed together because of what people would think otherwise. Then he passed that on to me by making me marry Odette for the sake of the family name. Because her family has money, so the companies could merge. I didn't love her Rory. She didn't love me. We were both miserable from the day she moved in. I don't want to end up like my dad! I thought I knew that back in college but I let myself get sucked back in. Now I really don't want to end up like him...I just… I couldn't marry someone I didn't love."

"Well, that's probably wise." Rory didn't know what she was supposed to say.

Logan shook his head "I'm sorry Rory you didn't come here to watch me have a meltdown. I haven't heard from you since that night. What's wrong?.

"I'm pregnant."
