Shelby got home from shift and was unlocking her door when the apartment next to hers came open. A brown haired girl stepped out. Along with a tall dark haired man.

They must of noticed Shelby was looking at them. "Hey you must be out new neighbor." Erin stuck out her hand.

Shelby shifted her bag on her shoulder and shook Erin's hand. "Hi yeah I'm Shelby Jensen."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Erin and this is Jay."

Shelby shook Jays hand as well. Jay caught sight of her bag and the logo that was on it.

"CFD huh?" Shelby had this puzzle look on her face. "Your bag."

Shelby snickered. "Yeah right. Sorry I just got off shift."

"No worries we totally get it. We are detectives with CPD."

"Good to know."

"Well we will let your get to bed. We have to head to work."

Shelby said goodbye to her neighbors and slipped inside her apartment and closed the door. She dropped her bag at the door and made her way to the fridge. She pulled it open and took out a beer.

She made her way to her room where she slipped into something more comfortable. She flipped on the tv and watched a movie drinking her beer till she fell asleep.

The sirens were blaring as squad 6 pulled up to the house fire. You could barely make out the house. Smoke was everywhere. Shelby jumped down from squad 6 and assessed the situation.

"Alright squad mask up. We need to do a primary search." Shelbys crew followed orders and they headed inside.

The house was empty. There was some trash from some squatters.

Chief Walkers voice came over their radios. "Squad get out. It's going to Flash."

Shelby turned around and pointed out. Her team followed orders and they left. They had just reached the street when the building flashed over. Sending glass shards from the windows everywhere.

Shelby was watching engine put out the fire. Hackett came over and stood next to his lieutenant.

"Lieutenant?"

"Yes Hackett?"

Hackett stayed silent for a moment. "I think I saw someone."

This caught Shelby's attention. She stopped watching engine putting out the flames and turned to her fellow firefighter. "What do you mean you 'think' you saw someone?"

"When we got called out. I was looking into a room and I think I saw a body."

Shelby nodded. Understanding what Hackett was saying. Shelby made her way over to Chief.

"Chief Walker?"

"Yes Lieutenant Jensen?"

"One of my guys thinks he saw someone."

"Alright Jensen. I'll get arson and CPD down here. Stick around."

Shelby nodded and went back over to her team. "Sit tight guys. We are going to be here for a bit."

Engine finished putting out the fire before anyone was allowed to enter the house. Shelby led her squad in once they were given the all clear.

They headed upstairs to the room Hackett was looking in when he thought he saw a body. They entered the room and it was completely chard over. The fire defiantly started in this room.

Shelby moved some debris and there was a very badly burnt body. Shelby couldn't make out if it was male or female. She got on her radio.

"Chief we are definitely going to need CPD."

"They are in route Jensen."

Squad continued to look around the house while they waited for CPD to arrive. Shelby stayed in the room with the body.

"Jensen CPD is on scene and on their way to you."

"Copy that Chief." Shelby watched the door and waited for CPD to enter. The two CPD officers entered the room and Shelby realized it was her neighbors.

"Erin? Jay?"

"Hey Shelby."

"Well I would say nice to see you but considering the circumstances." Jay made his way over to the body. "What we got?"

"We believe it was arson and the body was intentionally set on fire. Arson is here investigating but they don't have much."

Jay bent down next to the body to see if anything caught his eye. "We are gonna have to wait on the corner to give us something. I do not see any identification."

Erin made the call for the corner.

"Are my guys and me free to go?"

"Yeah you guys are. We will call if we need anything."

Shelby nodded and then rounded up her guys. They loaded up and headed back to the firehouse.

It had been a few days since the fire with the body. Shelby couldn't sleep. She had seen bodies in fires before but this one felt different for some reason. She looked at her phone and saw it was 1 pm.

She decided to go down to the 21st district to see if Erin or Jay could tell her something.

She slipped on her jeans. an oversized sweater, and ankle boots. She grabbed her keys and left her apartment.

When she walked into the 21st district she found a tall grey haired women standing at the desk. "Can I help you with something?" She wasn't a very high spirited person.

"Uh yes." Shelby stepped up to the desk. "Can I see Erin Lindsay or Jay Halstead?"

"Are they expecting you?" The officer was looking at her over her glasses.

"Um no but I was at the fire with the body they responded too."

"Take a seat. I'll call up there." Shelby did as the officer said. The sergeant then made a quick call.

A few minutes later Erin came down the stairs."Thanks Trudy." Erin wave to the sergeant at the desk. Erin then headed over to Shelby. "Hey Shelby."

Shelby stood up from her seat. "Hey Erin. I'm really sorry about this but I wanted to see if you guys knew who the victim was?"

"Well we could use your help. Can you come upstairs for a bit?"

"Sure."

Erin led Shelby upstairs and into the intelligence bullpen. "Hey everyone this is Shelby. She is the squad 6 lieutenant."

The intelligence team came up and introduced themselves. The first was Al, Voight, Atwater, and then Ruzek.

"Hi I'm Adam. Adam Ruzek." Adam stuck out his hand.

"Nice to meet you Adam." Adam had this contagious smile that warmed Shelby's heart. "Erin said I may be able to help?"

"Yes." Erin walked over to the board and Shelby followed. Shelby studied the board. There was multiple victims. All burned. All female. All under 18 from the looks of them.

"You guys thinking serial killer?"

Jay was leaning against his desk with his arms crossed. "He sexually assaults these girls. Slits their throats and then burns the bodies to get rid of any evidence."

Shelby's stomach started turning. She examined the photos of the fires a little closer. "Are they sex workers? And underage?"

"Yes. How did you know?"

Shelby's heart dropped to her stomach. She closed her eyes and then turned away from the board. "We had a string of these when I was in Kansas City. The police never caught the guy. When they got close he just disappeared."

Hank Voight was listening in on the conversation. "Alright someone call KCPD and see if we can get a copy of those files."

Shelby turned around to face Voight. "I can do you one better. I have copies of the files. There at my apartment."

"Lindsay, Halstead go with Shelby to her apartment and get those files. We need to hit the ground running." Hank then returned to his office.

Erin and Jay grabbed their coats and then headed to Shelby's Apartment.

Shelby unlocked the door and led the two detectives in. She went into what would be a second bedroom but she was using it to store stuff.

Jay and Lindsay followed her. Shelby began handing them boxes. She had about 5 in total.

"Is this all of them?"

"Yes that's everything I have. I was given copies of everything when the case went cold. I spent many hours looking over all the evidence trying to find something."

Shelby helped them load the boxes into Erin's car. Erin closed the back passenger door. "Thank you. We really appreciate this."

"Let me know if I can help Erin. I know this guy and how sick he is."

"We will call you if we need you. We promise." Shelby said goodbye to Jay and Lindsay.

The detectives headed back to the 21st. Shelby went back upstairs to her apartment. She sat down on her couch. Her plan had failed. She was hoping to find closure. Not open up an old wound.
