AN: So, here is the next chapter within 24 hours. I hope you enjoy it. A big thank you to everyone who read this story, followed it, favorite it, and reviewed it. It helped me put this chapter out early.
"Baby, do you want to join me?" Cindy was in the shower.
"I have to respond to these emails. I have to finish all this work before my flight tomorrow to New York". Logan respondent from his bed.
Logan"s house was almost empty, whatever he needed in his New York apartment was already shipped and was currently being organized by organizers.
"You know I am still waiting for you to ask me to come out to New York with you." Cindy told Logan from the dresser door wearing nothing but a towel on her washed head. Cindy was a tall leggy blonde with a model-like body. She had eye-catching green eyes.
Logan knew when a girl was with him for his money, he knew when a girl was with him for his good looks and he also knew when girls were with him for just a good night fuck, because of how good he was in bed. He knew all of it, and he didn't mind it one bit. Because he was also only interested in superficial things about those girls, in fact, all girls except one. Rory Gilmore. Rory Gilmore was a different species, she challenged Logan Huntzberger as no one had, she was never interested in how rich Logan was. She liked him for who he was as an individual. And every girl Logan met since Rory rejected his proposal fell short in her comparison.
Cindy was no different. Logan was not interested in taking her with him to New York. He had been looking for ways to break up with Cindy gently but going to a bar every night to get laid was getting too time-consuming for him with how hard he was working at the office. Cindy was easy, she was always up for some fun, she was happy as long as Logan took her shopping every once in a while.
"I told you we have been dating for only 5 months, that too casually. It"s too early for me to ask you to move with me, that too to the east coast." Logan replied while focusing on his emails. Whatever Cindy was trying to achieve with showing her nude model-like body, didn't happen. So she turned around in a huff and came back to the room dressed in a short pink dress.
"I don"t mind coming with you, you know." Cindy said sitting opposite Logan.
"Cindy, you are a great girl but I don"t want you to move with me to the east coast, we haven't even lived together, we meet each other twice a week, sometimes more. Sorry, this, whatever this is." Logan pointed to the space between him and Cindy. "Is over the moment I step on that plane tomorrow," Logan said clearly, looking at Cindy.
"What do you mean it"s over." Cindy knew a rich man when she saw one. And right now she was looking at one and there is no way she was letting him go that easily.
"I mean it"s over, whatever we have if you can even call it dating." Logan said typing away at his keyboard.
"Sure, whatever you mean boo, ill see how long you can stay away from me." Cindy replied seductively in Logan"s ear.
"Hello, son, nice to have you on this side of the country again." Mitchum shook hands with Logan and gestures to him to sit opposite him in his office.
"Well I would like to say the same, but that depends how well do you remember the terms of your agreement and treat me like me and not one of your pawns. And let me be clear if you do, I would like to remind you it"s you who came to me asking for me to come back to the business and not the other way round". Logan finished with a serious I mean business look. Look that he was used to giving after working in the business for some years now.
"You have always been dramatic son, I have always wanted the best for you. I think you"ll see that clearly in some time." Mitchum said with a glimmer of something in his eyes, something that Logan couldn't pinpoint just yet.
"Sure dad whatever you say." Logan said rolling his eyes.
"Now Logan, as you know you"ll be situated at the New York Times, that"s where you"ll work out of. You"ll work closely with all the writers there. Whatever new things you introduce, I want you to evaluate the performance post-training and feedback personally and closely."
"I know all of this dad." Logan replied irritably.
"And please call your mother. She has been biting my ear off about asking you to attend some family events." Mitchum said.
"I"ll see what I can do." Logan said, his eyes closed frustrated. Logan always hated attending his family"s events. It was the same kind of people, same backhanded comments. His mother trying to set him up with some new girl she deemed worthy to be the next Mrs. Huntxberger. And It wasn't going to change anytime soon.
"I need to get going, wouldn't want to be late on the first day". Logan said walking out of Mitchum"s office.
"Rory?Rory?" Tara shouted while entering Rory"s apartment carrying a garment bag.
"In the closet."
"Whoa, what happened here?"
"I don"t have anything to wear to the office and he will be there today." Rory looked up, sitting next to a big pile of clothes from her closet.
"I knew you were going to need my help today, so before you even asked here I am here like your fairy godmother with an outfit and some makeup 45mins before we need to be at the office. Do you have any idea at what hour I had to wake up to make this happen?" Tara showed Rory the bag and began laying out the outfit she chose for Rory.
"Tara, you are a heaven-sent." Rory thanked her friend happily.
Rory took the clothes inside her bathroom and came out looking office sexy in a short tight black pencil skirt with a maroon blouse, that was a little too tight at the bosom. Which was definitely not her style but in this case gave her a nice cleavage and figure. She stepped into her black office pumps.
"Rory, Logan is going regret walking away so much, the moment he lays his man eyes on you". Tara said clapping her hands.
Rory blushed furiously. She had never been the one to take compliments easily.
"Stop, Tara. That"s not what we are aiming for". Rory felt giddy today. She was feeling a mixture of happiness at the prospects of seeing Logan today and nervous at...well seeing Logan today.
"Sure, what else are we aiming for then? He will be wishing he could tear off that blouse off of you? He won"t be able to resist pulling you to the nearest corner and kissing you?"
Rory closed her eyes for a second and remembered when he had just done that at Finn"s birthday party and smiled.
"I don't think he needs me there to do that. Last I heard he was dating another girl and they were serious. Also, I can"t let him hurt me again. It has taken me nearly 2 years to get out of it and I am not even 100% out of it. I really can"t get hurt like that again. Especially from the same man. I am not going there again".
"Rory, I get that you are hurt but it doesn't harm anyone if you are looking smoking hot when you see your ex. No girl should ever run into her ex looking anything but smoking hot. Now sit down and let me work my magic with some makeup".
Logan"s first introductions were going pretty well. He met with editors and writers from different departments at the New York Times, he wanted to meet them all personally to show them how important this new change was going to be for the paper. Next was the features department. Mathew has asked all of his staff members to be in the conference room. Logan stepped into that conference room and started introducing himself.
"Hi, I am Logan Huntzberger. Thank you for taking out the time and meeting me here. I am here to change something"s in respect to the technology and medium of connection with people we use. Also, the new software will simplify your research and filter out any fake news or facts. Now, all of this will be done by my team, I am not a tech guy. But I will focus on your performance, evaluation, feedback, and any grievances during these changes very closely. You face any problem during this phase please feel free to reach out to me. I am also working very closely with our HR team. We don"t want anything to reduce your productivity. This going to be a big change in the company, and I would like for it to be implemented as smoothly as possible. I hope that..."
Logan was stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her. She was here. In the same room as him. She was here in flesh in the same room as him.
Logan gathered himself and began again, "I hope things are clear. That"s all I don"t want to keep you away from work any longer. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me."
He looked at her again, she looked more beautiful than he had remembered. All he wanted to do was go up to her and envelop her in a big hug. But he couldn't, it wasn't his place anymore. She wasn't his to hold anymore. She wasn't his to love anymore. Rory Gilmore did not belong to Logan Huntzbereger anymore.
Logan made his peace with the fact that Rory did not want him, the moment she said no to his proposal. And the moment Logan walked out of her life, he also made peace with the fact that she may never love him the way he loved her.
"Will this new change, affect our chances of getting fired?" A woman in her 40"s asked Logan.
"No, none whatsoever. All these changes will help you be more productive and if anyone feels like they are slipping behind in learning them, my team and I will work closely individually with them. So no, no firings." Logan clarifies.
Rory looked at Logan in awe. He was in his element. He was working the room so confidently. Rory felt a sense of pride in her chest. She was proud of him. She didn't know why, it wasn't her place anymore. But she did.
Logan looked at Rory and caught her staring at him. He smiled. He looked at her again, she was focusing on something in the file in front of her intently. What was she wearing? Rory was getting Hot. All he wanted to do was play his boss card and dismiss everyone else and kiss Rory senseless in this room, but he couldn't. He kept reminding himself that but his thoughts kept going back to Rory. So he focused again on the next question.
After 30 minutes of questions, as everyone was leaving Logan"s eyes were drawn to her again. He wished for her to look at him again with those deep cerulean blue eyes, that loved to look into. Maybe if she looked at him again, he could ask her to stay back a minute and ask her out for coffee just to catch up after work. But she didn't. She kept walking without looking over him even once. Like he didn't matter to her anymore. He felt heavy in his chest, his hands trembled. He felt her rejection all over again.
