A/N: Thanks to everyone who read and reviewed the first chapter. It got a lot of reaction, opinions and I love being able to talk with some of you guys about it so I'm truly blessed. Here's from Kim's perspective.
It took thirty seconds of stunned silence before a single tear rolled down Kim's cheek and a soft cry escaped her throat. What did you do? Her own accusatory tone bounced around in the confines of her mind. She had hurt Adam in the worse possible way by jumping to conclusions and she deserved for her heart to be blown to pieces by the one man who loved her more than anything and that she had found excuse after excuse to push away but now with four single words, she had lost everything, and she had no one to blame but herself. She tightened the hold of her arms around herself and padded towards Makayla's room, leaning against the doorframe and watching her as her chest rose and fell gently. They had gotten in a groove with her after she had let Adam into their lives, and she had opened up a great deal with his patience and humour and now she had to explain why Adam wouldn't be coming around and it raked her body with soft cries. When her body was all dry of them, she closed Makayla's door and headed for her own bed and slipped under the covers. On instinct, she placed herself on the side he usually used and when she thought she was all out of tears, she cried the loss to sleep.
Kim woke up from her night by Makayla shaking her lightly. "Kim?" She grumbled and Makayla shook her again. "We're going to be late."
"I'm up." She shook herself awake and smiled at Makayla. "I'll be right there."
"Ok." She watched her go and quickly grabbed some clothes and headed for a shower. She didn't deserve the hot water so she put it at the coldest her body would allow her to try to jolt her mind into gear and she washed herself before getting dressed and joining Makayla in the kitchen, finding her eating some cereal.
"Finish eating up while I do your lunch and I'll bring you to school before going to work." Kim busied herself with lunch, deciding that coffee and food could wait. She was hungry anyways. Fifteen minutes later they were on the road.
"Is Adam going to come eat dinner tonight?"
"Not tonight sweetie." Her heart clenched at the thought of having to explain Adam's absence to her, but she knew she'd have to, tonight, before it because more suffocating. She dropped Makayla off and headed straight for the district. She ignored Platt and went upstairs, and she stopped des in her tracks when she saw Adam already sitting at his desk. She took a deep breath and removed her coat. "Morning." He ignored her completely as she hung her coat on the back of her chair. She sighed and headed towards the break room. She poured herself a coffee and went back to her desk while they waited for everyone to arrive. The air in the bullpen was still, making her miss the banter between them in the morning. The rest of the team came up and it was business as usual. She did her best to act normal, the two having promised long ago that they would be professional in the bullpen regardless of their personal situation. The need to physically be close to him or touch him while on a case was hard to push away from her muscle memory but when a gun shot was fired in his direction, her fear outweighed the rest, and her hand was on his chest and worry was in her eyes.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." He snapped, pulling away from her and returning to the rest of the unit.
Kim closed her locker at the end of shift and leaned her forehead against the cool metal of the door.
"Is everything okay Burgess?" Kevin leaned against the side of her row.
"Yeah, everything is great Kev." She smiled her most honest smile, hoping he'd buy it. "Any plans for tonight?" She asked casually.
"Molly's with Ruz, you wanna join us?"
"It's girls' night with Makayla."
"It's always girls' night at the Burgess house." He smirked. "You sure you don't want to join?"
"Yeah, I'm good Kev, thanks." She smiled at him again and put her bag on her shoulder before leaving. She went down the stairs and walked by Platt's front desk. "Night Sarge."
"Not so fast Burgess, office." Kim closed her eyes and sighed. She was so close to being free but clearly the desk Sargent was observant like always.
"What's up Sarge?"
"Cut the crap Burgess, tell me what happened between you and Adam. He wasn't his usual flirty self with you and that's not like him.
"Adam and I are over." She tried to walk around Trudy and leave but the older woman cut her by stepping in front of the door.
"You really think that you can tell me that and get away with it?"
"Listen Trudy, I'm not in the mood right now."
"Tough because you are going to go get that little girl and you will come over and she will be entertained by uncle Mouch and you and I, we're going to have a talk."
"Sarge." She sighed.
"Don't you Sarge me. My place 7, that's an order."
"Fine." Kim resigned herself. She knew she wouldn't win against her so Trudy let her go and Kim went to get Makayla. She was quiet on the way home, but Makayla was talking her ear off about her day in school.
"Do you think I can give Adam the drawing that I made?" She jumped on a stool at the island while Kim got dinner ready.
"Makayla sweetie, I need to tell you something important." She nodded and waited for Kim to start talking. "Adam and I had a big fight yesterday and he's really mad at me. He says that he's sorry that he won't be able to come here like before. But I'll tell you what. I will take your drawing to him when I go into work tomorrow morning, how does that sound?"
"Okay."
"Alright so how about you go take a shower and change while I make dinner and after that, the two of us will go to Aunt Trudy's house for a little bit."
"Yes." She jumped down the stool and ran towards her room. Kim laughed and continued working on the food. They spent a nice dinner together before getting ready and heading out to Trudy's.
"There's my favourite girl." Trudy was great with kids; she had shown it often over the past several years. "How about you go in the kitchen, there is some ice cream with your name on it." Makayla looked at Kim for confirmation and she smiled back at her before she left to get the cold treat. "Alright, you, with me." Kim knew better than to argue with Trudy, so she followed him to the living room. "Come on, out with it."
"I went to his place, after the case, to clear the air, but he did all the talking, I let him down in the worst possible way Trudy and I don't think that we can come back from that." Her eyes were filling with tears, trying to contain them but filing, a pair falling down her cheeks.
"That man is in love with you Kim, I doubt that it's that serious of an argument."
"He says that we can't be friends, that he wants something that I don't and that he can't chase after something he wants but not sure that I want."
"Walk me through what happened at the scene."
"He went in the back yard, I waited in front and then I heard the gunshots. When I got in the back, he was face down, bullets in his back. I chose the wrong words, I assumed, I was wrong. I should have known; I should have known." Kim ran her fingers through her hair. "I did this to him; I did this to us. And now there's a little girl in that kitchen that is already missing him and it's all my fault."
"Hey, no pity party missy." Trudy's voice was firm. "But you are going to listen to me and listen really good and then you are going to man up and own to your mistakes."
Kim rubbed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Okay."
"When you were on patrol, that boy was engaged to a girl he lied to about what he did for a living. He went behind her with your skinny ass. It was plain as day who was going to win that one. After that, he never looked back. That is until someone convinced you to push the wedding date, that's when you started being selfish with him." Kim was about to argue but one look in Trudy's eyes and it cut her argument short. "He was hurting and angry and you started sleeping around with that weasel Roman. The man had to find out about it in court, after he showed you his support. Matt Miller, Blair Williams, the pregnancy, the loss. That loss nearly killed him, but he never back down from being at your side, ever, because that's the kind of man that he is but you keep pushing him away, every single time and he keeps coming back for more. You've got to be blind as hell not to notice the love he has in his eyes when he looks at you, but I don't need to tell you that there's just one person who can't see that."
"Me."
"You. When you decided to take Makayla in, I know he was struggling because he wasn't sure that you were ready for that, your state of mind after losing the baby." Kim was not surprised that Adam had confided in Trudy, or that Trudy had bullied it out of him. Either way, she knew. "But that man stood by your side then, your relationship didn't change because of the decision you made, but somehow, your trust in him waivers. Something in you is stopping you from trusting him and letting him in completely. He's made mistakes, he'll admit to that." The look on Kim's face said he already had. "But one mistake he didn't make is falling in love with you. Your mistake is losing trust in yourself with him, and that's why you keep doubting him. You need to look at yourself Kim, really examine yourself, it's the only way that you can fix this."
"I don't think it's fixable, you didn't see the look in his eyes Trudy."
"The day Adam Ruzek doesn't want something to be fixed, he won't be so mad at you. The day he gives up is the day you'll have lost him for good so now, the ball in is your court Burgess." Trudy patted her knee as Makayla came bouncing into the living room.
"Someone was impatient for you to come join us for some ice cream." Mouch smiled at Kim as she ran her fingers against the tears that were lingering in her eyes.
"One scoop." Kim stood and Trudy watched her walk towards the kitchen with Makayla, Randy standing next to her.
"Did it help?" He asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"Let's hope so." She sighed. They kissed and joined them in the kitchen for some more ice cream.
Kim thanked both Trudy and Randy and buckled Makayla in her car before heading back home. She watched Makayla fall asleep in the back seat and she drove aimlessly before she realized that she was driving onto Adam's street. She didn't know what she was doing but one glance at her sleeping kid in the back and then at the drawing that she had placed on the passenger seat, she cut the engine and took it with her before climbing the few stairs and ringing the doorbell and waited outside. She saw him come down the inside stairs and opened the door, blocking the space so Kim couldn't go inside.
"Kim, what are you doing here? Is something wrong with Makayla?" It was the only reason he could think of her visit, his request pretty clear that he wasn't ready to forgive her.
"No, not exactly." She fiddled with the paper in her hands. "I told Makayla about our fight. I'm sorry I shouldn't say it like that."
"It's okay." He understood why she said it that way. He couldn't think of another way to tell a six-year-old girl about this kind of situation. "She wouldn't understand."
"Yeah, right. So um, she made a drawing for you and I told her that I would bring it to you in the morning, but we were at Trudy's and then she fell asleep on the way home and I found myself here." She was babbling, she was scared.
"It's alright Kim." She extended his hand and she handed him the drawing. "Is it okay if." He asked tentatively.
"Yeah, go ahead." Kim watched him as he went down the steps and opened the back door of the car. He was leaning against the top and watched as Makayla slept. She could see his lips curve into a smile as Makayla seemed to stir lightly. He leaned into the car and kissed her on the forehead as she mumbled something to him, to which his smile grew bigger. In that moment of perfect clarity, she knew what she wanted. He closed the door and returned to the top of the stairs ready to go back inside.
"Thank you for this, it means a lot." He slipped into the door and let it close.
"Always." She whispered at the closed door of his building. She didn't expect him to walk back his decision, but she was glad that he would always have time for Makayla even if they were no longer together.
A/N: I needed to put some Platt in there because she gives the best advice and can kick them all in the pants to get their heads out of their asses, hopefully it will be the case here. I hope you guys liked it and please take a few seconds to review before you go, I'm looking forward to interact with more of you. Up next, I'll be updating Stalker since a lot of you have been asking for it - Sarra
