Glimpses of protective Hyde moments through his relationship with Jackie.
Part two of my tumblr prompts game.
Prompt suggested by octoberwren via reply to my post:
"Okay so I love, love this. My prompt for you would be jealous/protective Hyde over Jackie. Any situation it's up to you! I just love that trope. Thank you!"
I fell in love with this idea the minute I read it, and I managed to come up with this story. I hope everyone likes it!
Hands Off
1976
He still couldn't believe he was in prom. The one event he swore he'd never attend, and all because Jackie cried on him.
The second she turned the waterworks on he knew he was doomed. Seeing her cry felt wrong, it made him feel weird, and he would do absolutely everything to make her stop.
So here he was, on school territory, the one time he's not legally required to, and standing in the line to get their picture taken. He didn't want to at first, he didn't like taking pictures, but Jackie asked him and pouted and before he knew what the hell he was doing, he agreed. It was impossible not to, not when she made that face.
"Oh, poor Fez" Jackie said, pointing at the corner of the room. Fez was looking very gloomy and looking more lonely than ever.
"Mind if I asked him to hang out with us?" Hyde asked, feeling bad for the guy.
"Go ahead" Jackie said "But we're still taking a picture Steven. I want a prom picture with my date"
"Yeah, alright" Hyde said "Wait here"
He went to the corner where Fez was standing alone and said that he could hang out with him and Jackie if he was feeling lonely. The second Hyde said that, Fez smiled and pulled him into a hug.
"I don't do hugs, man" Hyde mumbled uncomfortably, prying Fez's arms off him
"I'm sorry, I was too happy" Fez said, then he glanced at the line where Jackie was standing "Who's that guy with Jackie?"
Hyde turned to look at Jackie, and saw her looking more than uncomfortable. One of the school jocks, Jason Collings, was standing next to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder, and she was trying to shove him off her gently.
Hyde saw red, he wanted to kill the guy.
He marched back to the photo line, and pushed the guy off her.
"Hands off my date, man" Hyde growled, wrapping a protective arm around Jackie's waist.
Jason put his hands up defensively, clearly afraid of what Hyde could do with him. He had a reputation, and it wasn't a nice one.
"Sorry man, didn't know she had a date" He said, quickly going away before Hyde could kick his ass like he wanted to.
"Thank you, Steven" Jackie said, hugging him "He was really creeping me out"
"If some guy ever bugs you again, let me know and I'll take care of it, alright?"
She nodded and laid her head on his chest, and he tightened his grip on her. And he prayed that she couldn't hear how fast his heart was beating at this moment.
He was so screwed.

"I still can't believe we're going on an actual date!" Jackie said enthusiastically as he drove "And we're going to make out somewhere that's not the basement for once!"
"That's not true" Hyde said "We made out in my room countless times"
"That doesn't count because your room is in the basement" Jackie said and he rolled his eyes. "It sucks, you know? Hiding our… whatever this is"
"Which is what makes it so hot" He answered with a smirk
"Yeah, but we have to keep finding new places to hang out" Jackie said "Especially now that Eric suddenly decided that he's no longer depressed over Donna and decided to build those geeky models on the basement all day"
"That's not gonna last" Hyde said, moving to park the car.
"Wait, not here, I can barely see the screen" Jackie said, and he sighed, trying to find another place to park his car "And what do you mean it's not going to last? He's been fine lately"
"Yeah, for now" Hyde replied "But no one mentioned Donna to him yet, and once someone does, he's going to lock himself in his room for another week"
Jackie smiled "And I'm assuming you're going to be that 'someone'?"
"Yup" He smirked and she laughed
"Is this spot good for you?" Hyde asked, parking the car
"Yeah" She said "I can see the screen now. Thank you, baby"
He smiled and pulled her into a searing kiss, tangling his fingers on her perfectly curled hair and placing his other hand on her dainty waist.
Her kisses always made him feel like he was getting high on a new, powerful drug. She's a really, really good kisser.
"Wait" She mumbled, breaking their kiss, and he looked at her questionably "We should get some popcorn"
"Jackie, I don't know if you can tell, but I didn't take you to the drive-in with the intention of watching the movie" Hyde said
"I know, but I really want some popcorn" She said, making those damn puppy eyes at him "Can we get some? Please?"
"Fine, let's go" He said, grabbing her hand as they left the car "And don't let go of my hand. There's a trashy bar nearby, some drunks tend to wander around here at night"
"Aww, you're worried about me" She teased him, and he rolled his eyes.
"If something happens to you while you're with me, your daddy's going to make sure I rot in jail for life" Hyde argued
"Daddy would do no such thing!" Jackie replied, with a teasing smile "You're not that important"
"Ouch. Nice one, grasshopper" He laughed and kissed her temple as they waited in the line.
"Learned from the best" She replied, and snuggled closer to his side. He had to bite back a smile; she's coming along nicely.
And of course, something just had to ruin the nice moment they were having.
"Hey toots" A clearly intoxicated man approached them, and leered at Jackie, completely ignoring Hyde's death glare "What's a pretty little number like you doing with a guy like him?"
"Crap, I told you" Hyde whispered in her ear "Let me handle that"
"That's ya boyfriend, princess?" The guy asked "You should leave him and be with a real man, y'know?"
Hyde felt like he was breathing fire. This guy was clearly drunk, just one small push and he'd probably fall to the ground.
"Yeah, now back the hell off" Hyde said, wrapping his arm around Jackie.
"She's really pretty" The man said, and somehow, he managed to put his hands on Jackie's behind, she gasped in surprise "And firm too"
The fucking audacity...
"Keep your fucking hands off her!" Hyde growled, losing his patience completely. He punched the guy and knocked him out cold.
"This is the second guy you punched for me" Jackie said after a few seconds, looking at Hyde with awe.
"The asshole deserved it" Hyde replied, rubbing his sore knuckles "Who the hell does he think he is, touching you like… mmph"
Jackie threw herself at him and kissed him fiercely, interrupting what was sure to be one of his many angry ramblings. He was taken by surprise but responded to the kiss right away, wrapping his arm around her waist and bringing her as close as possible to him.
"You have no idea how hot that was" She said, breaking their kiss and staring at him with a sultry gaze "Let's go"
"Wait, where?" He asked as she dragged him away from the popcorn line
"Anywhere" She replied with a devilish smile, and he smiled back.
She really is coming along nicely.

Steven Hyde was the stupidest man alive.
Why couldn't he have fucking asked her what was going on when he saw her and Kelso? Why did he have to jump into conclusions and do the worst thing possible? The one thing he swore he'd never do to her? The one thing he knew she wouldn't forgive?
He cheated on her, and now he'd lost her. He really lost her, and it hurts so fucking much.
And as if that's not punishment enough, he has to listen to Kelso babble about how he's going to get Jackie back.
What if she does take him back in the end? He wouldn't be able to see her and Kelso together again, he barely could before, but now... just the thought of it made him sick to his stomach.
"And to make up for lost time, Jackie and I are going to do it everywhere…" Kelso kept on babbling, and Hyde had enough.
"You are going to keep your hands off my girlfriend, Kelso" Hyde stood up and growled at the moron "Or I swear to God, I'll…"
"You'll do what?" Kelso defied him, standing up too "She's not your girlfriend anymore, Hyde! You cheated on her!"
"You think I don't know that?!" Hyde yelled, startling Kelso a little "You only want her back because she chose me over you!"
"I want her back because I love her!" Kelso argued
"The hell you do!" Hyde argued back. Kelso doesn't love Jackie, not like he does, he knows that for sure "You cheated on her hundreds of times, you complained about her all the time, she deserves better than you!"
"Yeah, and that's not you, right?" Kelso said, lowering his tone and giving Hyde a disappointed look "You're just like me, you cheated on her too"
Hyde clenched his fists. Fuck, he never wanted to pound Kelso as badly as he wanted to now. He grabbed Kelso by the collar of his shirt and pinned him against the wall.
"Don't you ever compare me to you again" Hyde threatened him, and stormed out to his room. He was afraid of what he might do to Kelso if he stayed in the basement listening to him.
He threw himself at his dingy cot and sighed, in a failed attempt to calm himself down. He wanted Jackie. He wanted to have her laying by his side, he wanted to kiss her, and hold her, and never let her go. He wanted to play with her hair and tell her that he loves her, like she did so many times with him. He never said it back, and he should've, she deserves to hear it, she deserves to know that she's loved.
He wanted his girl more than anything, he loved her so much.
But Kelso was right, she was not his girl anymore. And that was his own damn fault.

"Want another funnel cake, doll?" He asked, wrapping his arm around her waist and trying to ignore Mrs. Forman's dirty looks directed at them
"Are you trying to make me fat, Steven?" She teased him
"Nah, just want you to have a good time" He said "I know you'd rather be at a doll expo, or at the mall, so…"
"Are you kidding me?" Jackie said "This place is awesome! Thank you for bringing me"
She went on her tippy toes to kiss his cheek, and he turned his head around, getting a peck on the lips instead.
"You're sneaky" She giggled, and he kissed her again
"Yeah, and you like it" He replied, interlacing their fingers together as they walked through the expo "Hey, how 'bout you help me find those car speakers now?"
"Sure" She smiled
"And what are we looking for?"
"Badass looking and obnoxiously loud" She answered with a proud smile, and damn it, he wanted to kiss her again. So he did.
"You're awfully sweet today" She said "Not that I'm complaining"
"I just missed you" He said honestly
"I missed you too, Pudding Pop" She answered, running her thumbs through his sideburns "I'll go to the bathroom real quick, then we can search for your speakers, that okay?"
"Sure, why don't you ask if Mrs. Forman want to go with you?"
"I do not" The older woman replied "You two were being so loving and sweet that you didn't even noticed I was walking behind you; it makes me sick"
Hyde and Jackie exchanged looks, they did not want to be the target of Mrs. Forman's wrath right now, so they decided to ignore her last statement.
"Okay…" Jackie said, pecking his lips one last time "I'll be back in a couple minutes, wait for me here"
Hyde nodded and watched as Jackie made her way through the bathroom. He doesn't want to let her out of his sight, there are many creepy old men in this place, and he's not about to let his chick be mauled by one of them.
"See, there's Red!" He heard Mrs. Forman's voice again and turned around to see what was going on "Red!"
"Hey" Red approached them with a big smile on his face, not noticing how Mrs. Forman was glaring at him "Where's the loud one, Steven?"
"She went to the bathroom, she'll be back soon" Hyde answered, and turned to look at the bathroom's direction again. Some guy was standing near Jackie, and she looked very uncomfortable.
God fucking dammit.
She's too pretty for her own good, he took his eyes off her for one freaking second…
He marched where she was standing, Red and Kitty following behind.
The guy looked like he was in his late 30's, and he reached for Jackie's arm.
"Look, my boyfriend will be here any second now so can't you just back off?" He heard Jackie saying, trying to take her arm out of this man's grasp, but he held on tighter.
If Jackie ends up with any type of bruise in her arm because of this guy, Hyde was going to murder him.
"I don't see your boyfriend anywhere princess, I'm starting to think you made that up" The man said, and Hyde heard Mrs. Forman gasping from behind him.
He poked the man's shoulder and he turned around to look at him.
"If you don't take your hands off my chick right now, I'm going to chop them off" Hyde threatened the guy, but he didn't budge.
"Are you really, kid?" The man said wryly "Is this little tease even worth it?"
Hyde took a deep breath before laying a swift punch on the man's face, he could feel his nose bone cracking under his fist, and just when he was about to lay another one on him, he felt Red pulling him away.
"One is enough" Red said sternly, then he turned to look at the guy who was holding his bleeding nose "And you should get the hell away from here before security comes"
The man was going to protest, but he flinched under Red's death glare and left.
"Are you okay?" Hyde asked his girlfriend, taking her arm in his hand and checking for bruises
"I'm fine" Jackie answered, taking his hand and analyzing it "Is your hand good? Do you want me to get some ice?"
"Nah, it's all good" He answered, stretching his fingers and wrapping his arm around her "Still want to go to the bathroom?"
"Suddenly I've lost the urge to reapply my lipstick" Jackie said, smiling and wrapping her arms around his neck "You know how much I love when you get all jealous and beat up pervy guys for me, right?"
Hyde leaned down and kissed her for what had to be the hundredth time in the last hour.
"See, Red? When was the last time you beat up a guy for me?" Mrs. Forman yelled at her husband, and Jackie and Hyde broke their kiss to watch the scene.
"Why don't we go look for that stereo now?" Hyde asked
"You've just read my mind" Jackie said, letting him drag her to the other side of the room.

He heard the little bell ringing and sighed when he saw the tiny brunette holding a brown paper bag in her hands.
She looks so beautiful, and he misses her so fucking much.
He would never forgive himself for losing her.
After the New Year's, Red decided that enough was enough. He yelled at Hyde during the entire morning, not caring if his foster son was hungover, and he threw all of his mistakes on his face. He could still remember Red's harsh words.
"Last night, I saw the loud one kissing the foreigner. Do you have any idea how wrong this is? How badly you messed her up? She ended up with the king of perverts because you are the king of dumbasses!"
Red yelled, and yelled, until Mrs. Forman had to intervene, afraid that he was going to have another heart attack. Before Red left with Mrs. Forman, he gave Hyde one final yell:
"Fix this, dumbass!"
Red went fishing for two days after that. Hyde decided to follow the older man's advice, and went to talk to Jackie on the same day.
They talked, yelled and cried together, and in the end, they decided to try and be friends again. He wasn't going to lie, part of him died when he asked – no, when he practically begged – for her to give them another shot and she said no, but having Jackie as a friend is better than not having Jackie at all, so he just went with it.
She and Fez broke up a week after that. They never told him the reason, but he had a feeling it had something to do with him.
He was trying, he really was trying to make his friendship with Jackie work, but lately she's been so… dull, empty. She got her job back at the Point Place's Public Access show, and he hasn't burned her in months, yet, she still looks sad half the time. And every time he asks, she says she's fine.
Sometimes he wants to shake her and make her snap out of this. He wants his Jackie back.
"Hey" She said with a small smile "Mrs. Forman asked me to bring you lunch"
"Thanks" Hyde said, and she gave him the brown paper bag "Have you eaten?"
"Yeah, don't worry" Jackie said, leaning on the counter "Slow day?"
"Very" He replied, sighing. It's past noon and he had a total of two customers today.
Then they heard the little bell ringing again and a guy in a black hoodie entered the store.
"Hey, can I help you?" Hyde asked, then he saw the man leering at Jackie.
Hyde already knew he did not like that guy.
"Yeah" He said, taking a gun from his jacket and pointing at Hyde "What do you say you give me all the cash in your register, huh?"
Hyde heard Jackie gasping, and froze when he saw the man pointing the gun at her.
Oh hell no.
"I'll get your money" Hyde said "Follow me"
"No, I don't think so" The robber said, taking an empty backpack and throwing it at Hyde "Why don't you put the money in my bag and I hold onto your girl as a guarantee?"
"Don't fucking touch her!" Hyde growled, and the guy gave him a devilish smile before forcefully yanking Jackie's arm and placing his gun against her temple.
"The money. Now" The robber demanded, not taking the gun off Jackie's head. She started to cry and Hyde wanted nothing more than to kill this guy right now.
"Calm down baby, you're going to be fine" Hyde said, not taking his eyes off Jackie as he placed all the money from the register on the backpack.
After a couple of minutes, the register was empty and he gave the backpack back to the robber, who was still holding Jackie firmly.
"Now take your hands off her" Hyde said calmly, raising his hands in the air "Leave her out of this"
"But she's so pretty…" The thug replied, smiling sadistically and running his gun through Jackie's face while she sobbed "I bet I can get a pretty good ransom money if I take this little gal home with me. She looks like she's rich. What do you say, gorgeous? Would daddy pay good money to have his little girl back?"
Hyde felt his stomach dropping. No, he would die before letting this guy take Jackie.
"If you want to take someone hostage, take me" Hyde blurted, desperately "I own this store, my dad is rich as hell, he can pay the ransom, just… take your hands off her, man"
"Steven, don't…" Jackie pleaded in between sobs
"It's okay doll, you're going to be okay" Hyde said, trying to calm her down. Then he looked at the bastard who still held his gun against Jackie's temple "So, we have a deal?"
"How rich are you talking about?" The man asked
"Really rich, he owns a huge corporation, now just let her go, and take me, please" Hyde begged the thug, who lowered his gun. Hyde sighed in relief.
"Go stay behind the counter, Jackie" Hyde instructed the sobbing girl. God, he would do anything to be able to wrap his arms around her right now.
"Steven, no…" Jackie shook her head, but went behind the counter when she saw the pleading look on his face.
The robber was pointing the gun at him now. Jackie was safe.
Hyde was slowly moving into the guy's direction when he heard a gunshot and a piercing scream.
He ran to Jackie and jumped on top of her, trying to protect her and making them both fall on the ground. He was quick enough to place his hands behind her head so she wouldn't hit it on the floor though.
"You okay?" He asked desperately, running his hands through her face and looking at her body, searching for any type of injuries.
"I'm fine" She replied, still crying her eyes out and looking at him "And you? Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm fine too" He answered, lifting them off the floor and taking a look at the situation.
The cops were invading the store, and the thug laid on the floor, with blood surrounding him. One of the cops was searching for a pulse.
Hyde heard Jackie sobbing again and promptly wrapped his arms around her, tucking her head under his chin and running his hand through her back.
"I was in the back office with Leo… I called the cops" Randy said, coming from the back office with Leo by his side, but Hyde didn't hear him. He couldn't hear anything other than Jackie's sobs.
"Shh… It's okay doll" Hyde whispered in her ear "It's all over now, we're fine, I love you, and everything's okay now…"
Jackie slowly lifted her head off his chest, and looked at him in the eyes.
Her eyes were red, swollen, and very wet from the tears that were still falling from them. He doubted her crying was going to stop anytime soon.
Then she stood on her tippy toes and gently pressed her lips against his.
Hyde felt alive again. He'd spent over a year living in a colorless world, but now he could see rainbows everywhere.
The kiss was over just a few seconds after it started though, and Jackie buried her head back on his chest.
"I love you too" She whispered against his chest, and started another round of sobs. He held her tighter and kissed the top of her head.
They'd talk later. For now, he's just going to hold her.

"Hey! Hands off my wife, man! Are you supposed to get all touchy like this?" Hyde said, Jackie rolled her eyes and lightly slapped his arm
"He's just checking on the babies, Steven!" Jackie said, lifting her gown and exposing her very pregnant belly to the doctor, who chuckled to himself.
"So he's the jealous type, huh?" The doctor said, laughing to himself and examining Jackie's belly. "Don't worry Mr. Hyde, I do this at least 20 times per day"
"Jealous is not enough to describe this one" Jackie replied, and smiled "But I like him anyways"
"I'm not jealous, I just like to protect her" Hyde argued, and Jackie chuckled.
"They seem to be in the right position. Have your maternity bag packed yet?" The doctor asked
"Yeah, it's in the car already" Jackie said with a bright smile "Oh Steven, can you believe that in less than two weeks we're going to be parents of two beautiful baby girls?"
"Two girls, man. I'm so screwed" Hyde muttered
"I have three girls myself" The doctor said "If you want some advice, buy a gun, and do not let them anywhere near the Kelso boys. I almost shot Michael Kelso a few years ago"
Jackie laughed, but Hyde didn't, he looked lost in his own thoughts.
"Hey man, where did you buy that gun?" Hyde asked seriously
"Steven, don't!" Jackie said sternly
"Better be safe than sorry, Jackie! Did I tell you that Kelso and Brooke are having a boy?! A boy, Jackie!" Hyde said in a paranoid tone that he only uses when he's talking about the government
"Oh, that's wonderful!" Jackie smiled "Michael must be so happy! Poor Brooke though, can you imagine raising a Kelso boy? They should move next to a hospital and keep him out of high places, y'know..."
Hyde interrupted her "Jackie! You're missing the point! I don't want any of my baby girls hanging around Dun Juan El Tardo the Second!"
"He's not going to be like Michael, Steven! I don't think that Brooke is going to drop him on his head!" Jackie argued, and Hyde looked incredulously at her.
"We should move to Alaska" Hyde suggested "It's not like we're not used to the cold anyways, and…"
"Steven, will you stop talking crazy?!" Jackie exploded, looking annoyed "I'm starting to get hungry! Are we done, Dr. Abbott?"
"All done, see you next week Jackie" The doctor said, closing the Jackie's chart "Or even sooner, who knows. I'll give you two some privacy so you can change back into your normal clothes"
"Thank you, Dr. Abbott! I can't wait!" Jackie said, smiling excitedly, while Hyde still had a lost expression on his face.
"Good luck" The doctor said with a small smile before leaving the room, and Hyde sighed dejectly.
He's so incredibly screwed.
