Chapter 1: Ambush and Vows
Dante pushed away his breakfast and got up from the table to the shock of his mother and the concern of his twin. It was Dante's favorite breakfast, but he didn't touch it. Strawberry Belgian Waffles with ham and scrambled eggs. Vergil got out of his seat and found Dante looking out of the window facing the gates. He knew that even though Dante was furious, that the younger twin was hoping Sparda would come back.
"Dante," Vergil called softly as he took Dante's hand between his own before gently pulling him away. "Come back to breakfast."
"I…he's gone Verge,"
"Dante he will come back…."
"Not this time…." Dante said, causing Vergil to pause and look at him.
"How do you…."
"I can feel it….He's not coming back….."
Sparda rode furiously, despite feelings of hunger, being bleary eyed and weakened for blood loss. The 'mission' ended up being a trap, an ambush set up by Mundus. As soon as he arrived at the destination point, Sparda felt his blood boil as he saw Mundus emerge from the shadows and smiling cruelly.
"Again, you don't disappoint." He said as he regarded the Demon of Death as he folded his white angel wings. "Always taking up arms with these weaklings!"
"What is this?"
"It's time for you to pay for your treachery…."
"You stand there and yet you have the blood of countless innocents on your hands!" Sparda said. Mundus tilted his head, his long curly brown hair slightly bouncing. He wasn't the same form as the hideous statue he hid in. He had an angelic face, crimson eyes and to others he looked innocent. But Sparda knew better. He knew how cruel and ugly the Demon Prince turned King of the Underworld truly was. He didn't care how many he killed. He killed his own father to gain the throne.
"I had such high hopes for you…." Mundus seethed. Sparda wasn't moved. He remembered how they were in their youth, but times changed and so did they….
"Why would you betray me like this?" The Demon Prince hissed. "What can these humans give you that I can't?"
"You can't give me love, nor a sense of peace and belonging." Sparda said. Mundus hissed.
"You always were a sentimental fool! I'll give you one chance more…. return to Hell and at my side. Abandon the livestock and I will forgive you…."
"I'd rather die." Sparda said firmly. Mundus growled and took to the air, crossed his arms and looked down at the Demon of Death.
"Then you shall!" He looked at the hungered demons. "Destroy him!" The demons snarled and attacked but Sparda just smirked and ran at them. He felt his bloodlust rise as his body underwent a trigger. He grabbed a demon by the throat and relished in feeling it crush in his hands. The next demon was slashed, its blood and insides showering over the Demon of Death. Mundus suppressed a shudder. As much as he hated Sparda he couldn't deny that he enjoyed when Sparda went full Bloodlust. If I can't have him, then no one will! His jealousy knew no bounds when he found out that Sparda took a human wife and said wife bore his children! That whore…..She will die!
Sparda effortlessly took care of the first wave of demons but after the tenth, the Demon of Death missed a step and the demons tore at him. With a burst of wild energy Sparda threw them off, climbed onto his horse and rode off. Mundus nodded and the demons flew after Sparda. They killed his horse and knocked him out.
"I could easily kill you," Mundus purred as he looked at Sparda who discovered he was restrained as he woke. "But that would be too easy. I have a much more delicious idea. I am going to give your spawn his wish."
My spawn….Sparda's eyes widened at who Mundus was referring to.
"Yes, the one who said he would 'kick your ass' one day?" Mundus said with a smug yet cruel smile. "You will destroy the very thing you hold dear…." Sparda's eyes widened further at this.
"Take him to the deepest Abyss. I will be there shortly to begin." Mundus said to the demons who tightened their grip on Sparda before walking through the portal.
"In two years', time, I will destroy what you cherish most." Mundus said. "That whore you call a wife and your spawn." At this Sparda hissed and tried to break from his captors. Mundus laughed.
"Oh yes, that's just what I'll do." He spoke. "But you will not remember them, in fact, you will not care. You will be mine…. whether in my bed or in my ranks…. Or simply torture you to the point of madness…."
"Don't you dare harm them."
"I'm sorry you may have forgotten that you're the one caught here." Mundus said smugly before caressing his cheek, in which Sparda felt repulsed.
"You will watch them die." Mundus said. "I'll grant you that much." With a last laugh, Mundus walked in and even though he tried to break free, Sparda found that he couldn't.
"Pity if you were at full power as you were when we battled, you wouldn't be my prisoner right now. Bid them goodbye, for in two years' time, they will be gone!"
Eva….Vergil…..Dante…..forgive me…
Dante looked up from his work while they were with their tutor. History was not his cup of tea! He laughed at the doodles he drew but hid them before he was caught.
"Lord Dante," The tutor called. "Do you have an answer?"
"They sank?" Dante asked with a fierce blush. Vergil giggled and Dante shot him a look.
"Correct, the Titanic sank in the year of 1912 on her maiden voyage…." The tutor droned. They looked up when their mother walked in.
"Excuse me Mr. Myers but I need to speak with my sons."
"Of course, Lady Sparda." The tutor said with a bow. Vergil walked toward their mother but jumped when he heard a soft snore. He smothered a giggle when he saw that Dante was fast asleep, mouth slightly open and chin was resting on his hand. Vergil picked up a feather quill and lightly tickled his twin's nose. Dante's face scrunched up and he sneezed! Unfortunately, it set the teacher's books and belongings on fire!
"Oh no!" Mr. Myers cried as he frantically put out the fire. Vergil giggled behind his hand and grabbed his twin.
"Verge, what…. ooh are they making bbq?"
"No, you goof, you sneezed and set the teacher's things aflame!"
"Oops, my bad!" Dante said with a sheepish grin. Mr. Mayer came in holding a scorched and very dead bird!
"My messenger pigeon is dead!" He cried. The twins bit back laughs while their mother blinked.
"Mr. Myers, we are more than happy to compensate you."
"I don't know what happened. Echo was fine."
"Key word being was." Dante whispered. Vergil giggled before swatting the younger's thigh.
"Shush!" He commanded but Dante saw the smile on face.
"Mother you needed to speak with us?"
"Yes, my darlings," Eva said sadly. "Your father, is dead." The twins sat down in shock. Dante bowed his head but held Vergil close. Eva bit back a sob. She just lost the love of her life. The boys just lost their father. She gathered them into her arms and held them close and they sobbed. Dante also felt anger and rage. You son of a bitch! You bailed and now, you're never coming back! I hate you! I hate what you've done! I swear I would never pull what you did! Not to my love, and not to my kids! Ever!
