Chapter 2:

It was the start of the second week of school, and Katie could not be more excited, Quidditch try outs were today. She had received a letter from her parents, letting her know that they would not be signing her permission slip for Hogsmeade. They explained that Katie's uncle worked at Spintwitches Quidditch Store and they wanted her no where near him.

Katie didn't know much about him, never having met him, and her parents hardly ever mentioned him. From what she knew, her grandfather had set up arranged marriages for both his sons. Katie's father Cassius, and her mother Caroline had married, after years of trying to get pregnant, they finally had Katie. While her uncle Theodore, had killed his wife during her pregnancy. He had been in love with a No-Maj. He was arrested and sent to Azkaban for 12 years, only just getting out a couple years ago. The only reason he didn't get a life sentence, was because he didn't use a killing curse to kill her.

She had a small family. Her grandparents had passed away when she was younger, while Katie's mom was an only child, and her father had only one brother. It was weird to think, the only other family she had, was a convicted murderer.

Katie had a great relationship with her father, despite him being a stern man. He was a tall middle-aged man with sandy brown hair and sapphire blue eyes. While her mom was middle-aged as well with blonde hair and emerald, green eyes. Katie's mother was strict and would find a perverse satisfaction if Mr. Bell reprimanded her for not doing chores. Her parents were incredibly old school, and liked things to be done in a particular way. She didn't mind though, just feeling grateful that they didn't mind her playing quidditch. Her dad was incredibly supportive of her playing.

She had spent the better part of the morning completely distracted and unfocused. Not paying much attention in her Monday morning Herbology class with the Hufflepuff's. When class was over, she ran from the room as quick as she could, followed by Angelina yelling for her to slow down.

When they arrived on the pitch, Alicia was already waiting for them along with Oliver Wood and a few other kids. Soon after George and Fred joined them on the pitch laughing loudly, but as soon as Oliver began speaking everyone quieted down.

"Okay thank you everyone for coming to tryouts, for the Gryffindor quidditch team. A few things before we start, just because you were on the team last year does not mean you will make it this year." Fred and George Weasley sighed very loudly clearly annoyed with the news. "I want a strong team to beat Slytherin this year. This is our year, and we are going to win the cup. Everyone trying out for beaters stand to my left, seekers to my right, in front of me I want all chasers, and behind me I want all the keepers to line up." Oliver explained and waited for the kids to move around. No one stood behind him, clearly knowing they would not get the position as Oliver Wood was already the designated keeper.

They spent a couple hours running through drills, Oliver Wood making notes every so often. Eventually he flew up to the goal and the chasers took turns trying to get the quaffle past the captain. Katie was the last in line giving her the opportunity to watch how Oliver Wood played. He was quick on his broom, easily blocking most of the shots that were made. When it was Katie's turn she launched the quaffle to the highest point of the ring on his right side, landing the shot. Oliver looked slightly startled when he let one slip past him, and Katie flew around the goal and back in line with the other chasers. Smirking when she had her back to him.

Tryouts were finally finished, and Katie flew back to the ground with the others. It would not be another week or so until the team was announced, Oliver Wood not liking any of the seekers that had tried out. Eventually he recruited a first-year boy named Harry Potter and posted the new line up of the quidditch team in the Gryffindor common room. Katie was ecstatic to see that she had gotten the spot as a chaser along with Alicia and Angelina. Fred and George had gotten the beater positions as well. She had immediately written to her father telling him the good news, knowing he would understand her excitement.

They had spent the next month and a half practicing five days a week at the crack of dawn. Oliver was determined to win this year even if it meant that his whole team hated him for all the grueling practices. Katie never complained, used to early practices with her last team. She loved starting her day flying and playing her favorite sport. Angelina however complained every morning before practice, often sporting a terrible hangover from the previous night.

It was finally Halloween and classes were done for the week. She had received a letter from her dad earlier in the week but had not heard from her mother since the week after school started. At her old school, her parents would each write her a separate letter. Her mom's letters would often be a critique of what Katie should be focusing on in school. Even if the letters weren't genuinely nice, it was better then not hearing from her at all.

The day before had been the first Hogsmeade trip of the year that coincided with Angelina's birthday. Katie unfortunately couldn't go, but the girls had been sweet and had gotten her a costume. On the condition that she attend a party the following night and drink with them.

After dinner, the girls rushed to their room and got ready for the night. Angelina was dressed in a black and white catholic schoolgirl outfit with her hair tied in pigtails. Alicia's costume was a little less revealing, opting to go for an Egyptian goddess. The girls had chosen a little red riding hood outfit for Katie. It was a cute black dress that landed just above her knees, adorned with a short red cape and red heels. Katie had spent time getting the perfect beach curls and applying a little more makeup than she usually does. Even adding a red smokey eyeshadow. When she finished, she helps the other girls with their makeup having had more practice.

"Alright ladies it's time to go out there and dance with some cute boys." Angelina stated raising her cup in the air before drinking more.

"What about George" Katie asked. She knew that Angelina fancied George but beside from flirting he had not made a move as far as she knew, and Angelina had not invited him to the Halloween party with the Hufflepuff's. Cedric Diggory had asked Alicia earlier in the week and said she could bring her female friends. Probably not wanting Fred and George to start any trouble or get the other kids caught. They were at times quite eccentric.

"That wanker still hasn't made a move and I'm not letting him hold back" she huffed back.

They eventually found themselves sneaking out past curfew. All the girls clutching their heels to themselves to be as quiet as possible. Finding themselves outside of a door, Angelina explained that it was called the room of requirement and would change depending on what was wanted. Alicia cast a silencing charm before opening the door. Putting their heels back on they slipped into the room.

The room looked like an ordinary living room with a few couches and even a full kitchen. It was crowded with mostly older kids, all drinking and having fun. They made their way into the kitchen having to squeeze through the crowds of people. When they found the alcohol, Angelina poured the three girl's shots. "Ready…Go" Angelina shouted slamming the drink along with the other two girls.

They continued this for a while until an older girl dressed as a vampire said to them "You three should be on the floor with that much tequila!"

"I'm not even that drunk yet, just a little tipsy. My tolerance is like all the way up here" Angelina stated as she indicated with her hand high above her head. Slightly tripping on her feet, clearly intoxicated.

Both girls laughed and Alicia shouted "The music is calling me ladies" all three girls cheered and moved to the living room to dance.

Later in the night Katie was briefly left alone while the other two went to the bathroom. She had just finished pouring them drinks. Turning from the counter she looked around to see if she could spot the girls yet. She scanned over the crowds and then she noticed him. He was tall with powerful sculpted shoulders, fierce eyes, and a face that was hardened almost brutal.

It took her a couple seconds to recognize him from her summer quidditch camp. He was an incredible flyer and a great chaser; they had played in a few scrimmages. Though they had not talked much during the summer, just quidditch plays between matches. If she remembered correctly his name was Marcus Flint. She could not help the slight blush that rose to her cheeks thinking about how he was rather kind of handsome out of his normal quidditch attire. He was not dressed in full costume like the rest of the kids. Wearing black slacks, a tight black t-shirt which showed off his rather large biceps for his age. While his neck was smeared with fake blood, a darker red shade that dripped down.

She had always found taller guys to be attractive. Unfortunately, there were not many guys in the school that stood over six foot tall. I guess you could say she was into the tall dark and handsome type. Often favoring guys with darker hair, and blue, green eyes. She could not see his eye color from here, they were a lighter shade, but she could not be exact on the color.

When she returned her eyes to his face, she noticed Marcus was looking at her from across the room. She felt the heat again rise to her cheeks, unsure if she should look away or not. Maintaining eye contact with her, he excused himself from his friends and made his way over to her. Taking a step forward, she was suddenly yanked backward. Glancing up at the person she noticed it was Alicia. She continued to drag her in the opposite direction, away from the drinks she had just poured, and away from Marcus.

"We have to go; Angelina was in the bathroom speaking Welsh. She's by the exit waiting for us." Alicia said.

Katie's feet scrambled to keep up with Alicia. Looking behind her she noticed Marcus had stopped in his tracks. He had an inscrutable look upon his face, before she could utter a word, she was dragged away and out of the room. Now understanding that speaking Welsh meant throwing up, because there was Angelina with vomit all over her costume.

She did not see him again until her first quidditch match Gryffindor Vs. Slytherin. When the team entered the pitch, they all mounted their brooms kicking off from the ground. Soaring through the air, waiting for the game to start, mixes of red and green flashing through the air. Then she saw him, sporting a green robe. Their eyes linked as they flew past one another, only a few feet apart. He had a mischievous look on his face, grinning at her as he flew by.

"Hello, and welcome to Hogwarts first Quidditch game of the season! Today's game Slytherin versus Gryffindor!" Lee Jordan the commentator announced from one of the towers around the quidditch pitch. Cheers erupted through the pitch; kids excited to watch.

The players lined up in a circle taking their positions, with the two seekers flying above them. "Now, I want a nice clean game...from all of you." Madam Hooch looks directly at the Slytherin team clearly knowing their normal tactics. She kicks the trunk, and the bludgers zoom out, shadowed by the Snitch.

"The bludgers are up...followed by the Golden Snitch. Remember, the snitch is worth 150 points. The seeker who catches the Snitch ends the game." Lee Jordan announced voice booming through the stadium. Madam Hooch grabs the Quaffle and tosses it in air as high as she can. "The Quaffle is released...and the game begins!" Cheers continued to erupt, and the game started.

Angelina took possession of the Quaffle and whizzes down the pitch toward the Slytherin goal, tossing the ball and scores. A ding sounds as Lee Jordan announces "Angelina Johnson scores! 10 points for Gryffindor!"

The game continues and Gryffindor is in the lead, Slytherin is starting to get irritated, deciding to take different measures to ensure a win for their house. Katie watched from across the pitch as Marcus grabbed a beaters bat from one of his teammates and whacks a bludger as hard as he could. Keeping her eyes on the ball she watches in horror as it collides with Oliver Wood, directly in his stomach. Clutching it he plummets to the ground, leaving them without anyone to guard their goals.

Focusing back on the game, she chases after Angelina, who was currently boxed in by Flint and his other chaser. They sent her flying into one of the towers and she crashes to the ground as well. At this point Katie no longer heard the announcer, she was fuming. Seeing her two friends on the floor and given her an extra boost.

Marcus had the Quaffle in his hands and Katie took off after him. Coming from the side she used her body weight and dug her left shoulder in just under Marcus arm on his right side. He grunts and his hands loosen on the Quaffle, taking the opportunity she gets her hands on the quaffle tangling their arms together. The shock wore off by now and he began pushing her back with his right elbow. "Watch it, stupid bint" He roared a scowl plastered on his face.

Fumbling with the quaffle she used all her strength to try and pry it from his hands, but he was clearly stronger than her, so she needed to be smart about this. Taking her right hand and making a fist, she punched the front of the quaffle popping it from his grasp. She rocketed downwards tucking the ball under her arm as she used her whole body to flip upside down heading in the opposite direction, away from the Gryffindor goals. She could feel him hot on her heels as she reached the Slytherin goals faking a toss to the left and going for the one on the right. Confusing the Slytherin keeper and successfully scoring for her team.

Then she heard it from the speakers "He's got the Snitch! Harry Potter receives 150 points for catching the Snitch!"

Shortly after the whistle was blown by Madam Hooch and she announced, "Gryffindor wins!" Half of the crowd began to cheer, and a smile grew on Katie's face. Until she remembered her friend on the ground. She flew to where Angelina was located, teachers were already surrounding her and getting her to the hospital wing.

It was a tough game and even though Slytherin cheated they had still won. Katie landed on the ground and made her way with what was left of her team to the changing rooms. She snatched her possessions and rushed out opting to take a shower in the common room instead.

As she made her way down the hallway, she rounded a corner and spotted Marcus with a despondent look on his face. Ignoring him she held her head high and attempted to pass him. Moving too fast for her to respond in time, he intentionally knocked into her. "Whoa there." He said while chuckling.

"What the fuck" she exclaimed agitated. Stumbling to her feet she whirled to face him. Not backing down, even though he stood a foot taller than her.

"Well maybe you should watch where you're walking." Marcus said leering at her with an eyebrow raised. She couldn't help but notice a hint of ferocity in him that made her wary.

She let out an audible groan. "Don't you dare act like that wasn't deliberate."

He took a long look at her and she tightened her arms around her quidditch bag and broom. "Yeah, because I was deliberately trying to walk into a scrawny Gryffindor." He remarked.

Her sense of grievance had overwhelmed her sense of self-preservation. "Well, I wouldn't put it past you, you're a prick with no redeemable qualities." She rolled her eyes in exasperation.

"Someone's knickers are in a twist," He said.

Her eyes widened with surprise "Oh, shut it. You're a lousy cheater, and it didn't even help you win." Katie said gloating over their recent victory, she watched as his nostrils flared with anger.

"Is it exhausting being so righteous all the time." He said dryly tilting his head to the while glaring down at her.

She should have been afraid; he was bigger and stronger than she was. Instead, she glared at him puffing her chest out, "Can't help it when I'm in the vicinity of a psychopath."

"Well, this psychopath's feelings are hurt" He taunted holding his hand over his heart, only receiving an annoyed grunt from the blonde girl. She raised her right hand making un unmistakable one fingered gesture. Marcus laughed as he walked off.

Before he disappeared, she shouted out "Have some dignity when you play. Its free you know."

That is how her first conversation with Marcus Flint went. After spending all those months admiring his flying abilities. She wondered what would have happened if they had spoken on Halloween. Would that conversation had gone that same way? Would he have been nice to her that night, or had he already known that she was on the Gryffindor team. The night she was sorted Katie knew she had stood out from the first years, so she assumed he had already known. What would have happened if Angelina had not gotten so sick that night? She would spend many nights wondering all the different what ifs. Even if he was a prick.
