Ch. II Is It Supposed to Hurt if You're A Ghost?

-1 Week Later-

Maddie Fenton, one of the world's leading minds on everything ecto-related, loving wife and mother to world known teenage superhero: now stood at the bedside of her nephew who it seems is in the same boat as her son. Moving around checking the various machinery designed to help provide any care she could to her son in case of emergencies, or just to further study his abilities whenever her curiosity brought a new question, and got the best of her. Listening to the soft yet familiar slow beeps of the EKG, and checking the IV filled with a combination of ectoplasm and blood, the Fenton Matriarch turned her head to the doorway as she heard it open revealing her two children Jazz and Danny.

Looking over her children she took stock over their appearance which she found herself doing every now and again.

Jazz over the course of the past year had a few changes. Since joining Team Phantom and undergoing a brutal (to her at least) training regiment to get her up to speed, gained a bit of muscle tone. Her lanky body filling out growing a bit more into her mother's frame, but keeping herself rather lean. Her long red hair which used to flow just past her rear, was now cut just shy of her shoulder blades. Usually kept within a braid for practicality reasons but was now hanging, relaxed, within a loose ponytail. She tried on multiple occasions, to no avail, to have her cut it to a similar length to her own but was always met with resistance. Her new looks garnered the attention of many males at Casper High, something that boosted the confidence of the going on senior.

Danny on the other hand had gone through the most changes in her eyes. Gone was the skinny boy with what seemed to be a head of perpetually unkempt bed hair, who always seemed to slouch and hide away from the world. Now he was a young man, with a body of someone who seemed to practice some form sport since they were a small child. His shirt no longer seemed 2 sizes to big and clung to him nicely over the muscle he built up over the year and a half of his ghost fighting. His posture also changed quite a lot as well. He stood straighter, chest more pronounced as if to proclaim he's here to save the day no matter what. His hair while a bit longer still retained it's unkempt style, she also thought of getting him to change up his style, but realized that the current style is what gave him his own look so she allowed him to keep it. Albeit reluctantly. His eyes held what she considered the most drastic change. Before everything he never seemed to look someone in the eye always finding his surroundings more interesting. If you managed to catch a glimpse of them, the once bright blue seemed just so dull and lifeless as if he were just simply existing. Now thought? One could say his eyes alone could light up a room with how bright they seemed. Getting superpowers, helping saving the world, and getting a girlfriend she guess could do that to someone. She still didn't understand how she was so blind to his changes over all that time but considering how focused, read: Ghost Happy, she was she figured over time it was quite obvious.

Keeping her analysis going she soon got to a faded but still glaring flame-like mark on his arm left arm from a successful shot she herself landed on him when she still-...even now she can't bring herself to come to terms with what she did. Averting her eyes, she attempted to hide the tears that were threatening to come, she shook her head a few times to attempt to clear her thoughts. Opening her eyes once more and looking towards her children she knew that they saw. Clenching her eyes and fist she could feel a cold feeling begin to wash over her but was snapped from her thoughts as a light ping coming from the monitor she was standing in front of she lets out a long sigh she shifts her eyes back to the screen of the computer that had broken her from her thoughts.

Walking from the door to stand behind their mom Danny and Jazz both glanced over her shoulder to get a glimpse of the image that had just popped up on the monitor.

What appeared was an image of their cousin who had been in a coma for the past week since his crash landing on their rooftop. Within the image was the X-rays just taken, showing that most of the bones that were broken upon his admittance to the Fenton Hospital, were now pretty much completely healed.

The silence was soon broken by Maddie who let out a sigh of relief at the image, "Well I guess we can put that half-ghosts have an accelerated healing factor." She said standing up straight, whilst crossing her arms. "Though that begs not only the question of just how he got ghost powers, but also what caused this in the first place."

"Your guess is as good as our Mom. But we won't know for sure until TJ wakes up." replied Jazz as she turned to rest on the counter the computer was resting on.

"Maybe he ran away from home, because he-" Maddie began only to be cut off by her son.

"Mom I you didn't know. How many times do I have to say I've forgiven you?" Danny said as he gave an exasperated sigh. "Besides Aunt and Uncle T were the interrogate you til you give them the answers, type. I doubt TJ would've been able to keep anything from them if he got them too suspicious he he" He finished with a lighthearted chuckle.

Lips curling in a small smile at the mental image of her 15 year old nephew sitting in her sisters kitchen with a single overhead light shinning down on him as she and her husband grilled him for answers. This mental image triggered yet another bout of questions that had plagued her over the few days since Tanner arrived. The most obvious being: just what happened to her sister and her husband? As she peered over to her children standing over their cousin she could tell that similar questions were running through their heads. But those questions would have to wait just however much longer until the patient took to awaken.

*Beep Beep Beep*

The rapid beeping of the EKG monitor, snapped those among the waking living from whatever thoughts that held their attention and forced it upon said monitor. What it showed them was just as worrying as the thrashing from the bed that started just after.

"n-noo...Stop..D-Dont!...MOM!" came the increasingly pleas from the prone teen until the final cry, and a small electrical pulse jolted the teen into a sitting position.

Looking around with wide and unfocused eyes Tanner could only make out blurry figures in the low light. The sudden brightening of the lights not helping matters much either, forcing his eyes shut to reduce the stinging sensation.

Feeling a hand land on his shoulder caused him to release an involuntary shock from the point of contact shocking Jazz in the process, forcing a shrill cry of shock from her mouth. Stepping back shaking the feeling from her hand she glances to her brother, who was walking over with a brief look of apprehension.

Nodding his head in confirmation that he'd handle it as best he could, he stepped closer to he still recovering cousin. Reaching his hand forward before quickly withdrawing to prevent his own tasing, he opted to speak first.

"Tanner?" He addressed softly.

Hearing a somewhat familiar voice Tanner brings his hands away from his eyes slowly, letting them properly adjust to the light, blinking the last vestiges of blurriness from his eyes. His eyes slowly move over to his side as he hears his name once more from that familiar voice. Focusing on the figure to his right he notices his maternal family. The closest being Danny who looked just a tad bit different from the last time he saw him in person, baring his last public appearance since revealing himself.

Before his brain had to process what he said he blurted out "Well someone finally hit the gym," he said with a small grin.

Looking down at himself before letting his own smirk spread across his lips at the comment his witty mind coming up with a quick retort, "Well I did hit a few things, probably a gym somewhere in there."

Straightening his face once more he quickly went into questioning mode, "Though I think for the sake of everyone here we should probably talk about what hit you," He continued.

Coming back into his senses Tanner racked his brain for answers, concentrating hard for what had transpired. Slowly but surely images began replaying through his mind of the last week he could remember.

Facial features scrunched up in concentration he begin regaling his tale. "I'm only remembering bits and pieces of the last week. What I do remember though was finals being harder than ever this year. Something Danny could probably attest too," he started giving him a sideways glance. "Especially Mr. Leslie's, always hated history, but his was the last I had for this year."

Jazz, finally able to feel her fingers after their brief experience of knowing what a fly probably feels like going through a bug zapper, slowly approached. Sitting to his left she slowly sets her hand upon his shoulder in a comforting gesture. "Tanner, you have to calm down and think clearly, you've got time."

Letting his muscles relax a bit and listening to her advice, his breathing slowing and evening out, he continues, "I do remember having to take the bus because my usual ride was out of town, but since I nearly passed out on the bus I figured a nap was needed and well deserved." Eyes narrowing slightly as his heart tightens in his chest he pushes forward in his recollection. "When I walked through the front door Mom and Dad were just heading down into their lab and we made small talk for a bit before they noticed just how tired I looked, and told me to go rest and they'd order in after I woke up."

As her hand was still connected to his shoulder, Jazz was the only one who could feel the slight trembles, and the slight yet noticeable quickening of breaths coming from Tanner. Shooting a worried glance to Danny and her Mom she was about to speak up, though never got the chance as the panicking teen spoke up once more.

Not noticing his own elevated rate of breathing the teen continued on "I-I barely remember changing, or even getting into bed, but I do remember the alarm from the lab's ghost portal going off," As he continued his dark blue eyes slowly began to bleed into a glowing cyan, something which the others took notice of, especially Danny as his ghost sense suddenly triggered. Breathing becoming more ragged with each passing second he continues, "I don't think I ever got out of bed as fast as I did then, but for some reason in the pit of my stomach something just felt off."

Feeling her hand going a bit numb Jazz looked to her hand and noticed a thin layer of frost beginning to creep up along her fingers from her point of contact. Quickly snatching her hand from his shoulder, she begins shaking the ice off trying to once again regain the lost feeling in her hand.

Unaware of his cousins plight, Tanner continues on, "But-, but when I got down there, I saw...I s-saw," he couldn't continue as the words became stuck and he felt as if every bit of moisture in his body suddenly vanished as a cold wave rushed over his body. Though the sob that his body produced forced him to realize just where all the water in his body happened to move to as he felt the slightly warm tears against his cool face.

As soon as the tears were noticed Maddie entered into mother bear mode and rushed to his side. Kneeling in front of the distraught teen, and gently caressing his right cheek with her left hand wiping away as many tears as she could, Maddie pressed as gently as only a mother could "Saw what Tanner? What did you see?"

Looking into the familiar warm violet eyes his own mother once had, the brief flash of those same eyes slowly losing that light and warmth, caused the dam holding back the flurry of grief, anguish, and sadness to all come rushing out as he sob uncontrollably as he blurted out, "I saw them die...M-Mom and Dad...both of them...were...dead."

Even with the temperature being seemingly several degrees lower than normal, the news just uttered from Tanner caused the Fenton family to feel as if the room around them were a sauna.

All attention was soon placed towards the door across the room as it was suddenly, and rather noisily forced open by a rather large foot.

Barging in with a plate of warm fudge in his hand the Fenton patriarch boisterously exclaims "Fudge anyone?!," though when no one graciously replied in the affirmative, and opens his eyes to see the somber expressions on his family's faces.

"Soooo...no fudge?"

A/N:

And that ladies and gents, wraps up chapter 2. Again I thank any and all who read my story, and any and all helpful criticism is welcome and encouraged.

For now I'm trying to figure out a consistent schedule to have the newest chapters written and out for your reading pleasure. So far it seems that I could get chapters out every Saturday or Sunday so for now I'll try my best to stick to those days for chapter releases. If I cannot get them out on either of those days then no later than the following Monday or Tuesday should suffice.

Once more thanks all for the reads, potential comments and reviews. I hope to keep everyone thoroughly entertained.
