Milo knew the plan. Stay separate. Stay hidden. If you get caught, don't make a scene. Take the money and go. Milo mostly observed; it was Kiyoko who did most of the pickpocketing. She was on the shorter side, and she was able to maneuver quietly.
Kiyoko had woken Milo up around noon. Mornings were prime time to steal as more people were out for work. The thicker the crowds the easier it was to blend in and the better it was to run away.
Currently, the duo pressed themselves against a brick wall on one of the busiest streets of their city. Kiyoko eyed the members of a large crowd that rushed by. Some pushed strollers heading for a park that was just down the road, others wore suits or dresses rushing to get to work on time. She scanned each person, making a profile of them. She noted down the outfits they wore, determining who looked rich. The ones who were on their phone or pushing a stroller were prime targets, for they were distracted and unaware of their surroundings.
"I see one" Kiyoko suddenly announced. Milo straightened himself from where he was playing with a rock with his shoe. He followed her gaze to where it rested on a man sporting circular black sunglasses. He was grinning as he spoke to someone on the phone, his other hand flipping through his wallet. She watched as he stopped and let out a burst of laughter before putting his wallet away in his back pocket. His hair was pure white, and he was tall. The perfect candidate for a good pickpocketing as he seemed distracted by his call. Anyway, who even places their money in their back pocket in the first place?
Kiyoko made her first move, slinking behind people who were behind the man, and Milo followed. He stayed on the other side of the crowd, his main role was to observe. In principle, if Kiyoko ever got caught, she could easily hand off the money to him.
She quickly got closer to him, keeping her head low. He was still laughing on the phone, every so often throwing his head back.
"Nanamiiii" the man extended the grin on his face, obviously enjoying the distress of whoever he was teasing. "Why do you lack so much faith in me? I'm here now getting the job done. Thanks for the update, but I'll be done soon. Remember I'm literally THE strongest sorcerer in the world!"
Kiyoko bit back a slight laugh, Who the hell is this guy? Sorcerer? Sensing that his conversation was ending soon, she knew she had to act quickly. She situated herself so that she was at his shoulder but slightly behind him. She extended her hand out to his back pocket, making sure to keep her gaze forward. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see it, her hand was inches away and her fingers were ready to snatch the wallet.
Wait what?! Her hand collided with something, it was like a barrier preventing her from even touching the wallet. She tried reaching out again, but the same thing happened.
"Nanami I have to go."
Kiyoko sensed the sudden seriousness in the man's tone as he began to hangup. She saw his body begin to turn, but she didn't wait to see what he would do to her.
Kiyoko took off, weaving and hiding herself in the crowd. She looked for Milo but luckily he had found her. They ran shoulder to shoulder.
"Shit, what was that?" Kiyoko frowned at her failure, but she was left confused on what had just happened.
Milo glanced quickly behind him, "I don't know, maybe he's got a technique? Where did he go, he's not behind us anymore."
Kiyoko widened her eyes, "another one like us?" She led them to an alley away, in search of a ladder they could climb.
"I'll use my technique, you use the latter." Milo nodded taking off in an instant. Kiyoko began immediately stepping up, summoning steps of a staircase that would lead her to the top. Unsure of how many people actually knew about curses and techniques, she preferred to keep the secret between her and her brother. She had specifically chosen a quiet alleyway so that no one would see her practically floating to the top of the building.
Although she had reached the top first, her brother wasn't too far behind. They collapsed together on the roof, catching their breath from their sudden sprint.
"Ah so you're the brats who tried to steal my wallet." a sudden voice came from behind them. "And what even was that little magic trick you did a second ago?"
Kiyoko's eyes widened in terror, and she felt Milo tense up. Crap he had seen her technique? That was going to be a headache to explain. But how did he even find them? Milo said that they had lost him.
She bolted upright, turning her body. He stood there with a grin, this time his glasses slipped further down his nose revealing sky blue eyes. Kiyoko drew in a breath, but quickly stopped herself. It struck her that he was tricking her, getting her to freeze, and tone down her reaction time. Not everybody on the streets followed one singular rule, if a child had stolen from them, there was no telling how they would respond.
Her body tensed, getting ready for a fight she knew was bound to happen. Despite the seemingly relaxed attitude from the man, her conscience refused to accept that he would just let her go. So, she lunged at him. She summoned a knife, using her arm as a way to hide it. Two lunges forward, with a quick pivot to the right, and she would throw the knife, hoping to hit him in the foot. She had found that immobilizing the target was the best strategy. It gave time to escape and avoid a full on fight.
"Wow, we're feisty, I was not expecting that from someone as small as you." She heard the words come from behind her. Before she could even register the disappearance of the man who was only in front of her mere seconds ago, she felt a hand yank her up by the collar of the shirt.
"You know it's not nice to pickpocket, didn't you mom teach you better?" He made a tsk sound as he spun her around so she was looking into his eyes. She swore she could see clouds in his eyes, or maybe that was because they were so blue they reflected the clouds.
"Let me go! Don't you have anything better to do than bully children?" It was a poor attempt to get him to listen. "Dammit! Milo do something!"
Milo was glued to the ground. His lips were turned down in a frown, and tears were strolling down his cheeks from behind his sunglasses. Immediately Kiyoko felt bad, she knew her brother rarely fought, in fact he didn't even know how to (he was only ten after all). Seeing someone he loved in danger upset him, Kiyoko was unsure if that was because of how he naturally was, or because of his past. She wished he remembered his family, sometimes trying to understand him was an enigma.
"Look" this time she stared the man right in the eyes; she ignored that this only made him smile bigger. "Whatever you want we'll give it, just please let us go." She hated how desperate she sounded, but it was her only choice.
"Ah why didn't you say so before!" Throwing his hands in the air, he dropped her on the ground. Luckily, she landed on her feet, she couldn't even imagine how embarrassing it would've been if she had landed on her butt. He stroked his chin, looking serious for a moment. "I've decided... give me your money!"
Kiyoko looked incredulously at the man, "We pickpocketed you, what makes you think we have mon-"
"I was only kidding!" He let out a burst of laughter. It reminded Kiyoko of a child: how they would always find their own antics hilarious. "I have some questions I want you to answer."
"Fine." It wasn't like Kiyoko could say no, accepting the man's request was the quickest way to get out of this mess. Anyways, it wasn't like her life was anything secret.
"What're your names?" He squatted so he was now eye-level with her, Kiyoko couldn't tell if he was being genuine about getting to know her and her brother, or if he was just some freak. She was leaning towards the latter.
"I'm Kiyoko and that's Milo." She stuck out a thumb to Milo who had scooted next to her. He hid half his body behind her, clutching onto her shoulder.
"Just Kiyoko?"
Kiyoko rolled her eyes "Kiyoko Haya."
"I'll introduce myself as well, so you don't think I'm a total stranger!" Kiyoko just blinked at him. "I'm Satoru Gojo the strongest and most powerful man alive."
"I didn't ask" the man, Gojo or whatever, was getting weirder with each thing that came spitting out of his stupid mouth. Plus, he was noisy.
He looked visibly hurt, "that was uncalled for… you remind me of Megumi…" he muttered. "Anyways, where are your parents?"
One moment he acts like he's three, and the next he's totally focused. I just want to get out of here. "Not here… they're home" Kiyoko lied, who cared anyways? It wasn't like he was going to meet them.
"Are you two even related?" When Kiyoko shot him a look, he elaborated, "you just don't look like each other."
"We're not," Gojo seemed to take interest in that fact, nodding his head slightly. "How many questions do you even have?"
"One more," he stuck up a finger, "What was that trick you did, the one where you walked on air." The steps Kiyoko had made were just extensions of her cursed energy. Since her technique allowed her to solidify her curse energy, she was able to essentially "walk on thin air."
"You know what it is already, so why are you asking me?"
"I do?"
Kiyoko rolled her eyes. Gojo hadn't acted the least bit surprised when she had summoned a knife, instead he had decided to throw out a joke. The way he talked casually, and never stopped grinning told Kiyoko that this wasn't his first time seeing curse techniques.
"That little barrier that prevented me from grabbing your wallet, was that not the same thing?"
Gojo smiled more than he previously was, "it seems we don't need to dance around the truth anymore, who taught you your curse technique?"
Milo had been right about the name, damn what else didn't he remember about curses? What other secrets were lurking in his mind that he just didn't remember yet.
"I did."
"Oh? And him? What's his technique?" Gojo gestured to her brother. At the mention of him, Milo tensed up, cutching Kiyoko's shoulder tighter.
"Show me yours first , and then he'll show his" when Gojo looked like he was going to protest, she added "it's easier to explain that way." After all, it wasn't supposed to be Kiyoko making the demands.
"My curse technique involves the Limitless and manipulating the infinity and the Six Eyes," Both her and Milo looked blankly at Gojo, which he took slight offense to. "Have you never heard of those things?"
Kiyoko and Milo shook their heads. The only person who really knew anything curse related was Milo, and even that was a bare minimum. Gojo took a mental note of their confusion, it was obvious Kiyoko didn't come from a family of sorcerers.
"I'll explain it in simple terms for you children. My six eyes allow me to see curse energy at a precise level. As for the Limitless and infinity..." He stuck up a hand, inviting the children to press against it. "Try to touch my hand." Kiyoko reached forward, but like last time, when she had tried to grab his wallet, she never came in contact with it. Rather she felt a force of energy. Realizing this was part of his technique, she gasped as she could feel the flow of cursed energy.
"Nothing can touch you" She pressed harder as if she could overpower him.
"And you are… correct!" He shot finger guns at her. Gojo didn't both diving into the technical terms of his technique as that would only confuse the young children. "Now as promised, what's his technique?" Milo had come forward, braver and fascinated by the use of cursed energy that was different from Kiyoko's. Wordessly, Milo reached out to make contact with Gojo's hand. He continued forward until his little palm matched up with Gojo's, it was like the barrier was never there.
"Huh?" Gojo rose the connecting hands and peered in between them. They were definitely touching. "You're canceling out my cursed energy." He said in slight awe.
"From what I've understood, Milo's cursed technique is like a parasite. The curse energy latches onto your body, and it eats away at your own cursed energy. Plus, it's aggressive." Kiyoko stated.
Everytime Milo would make contact with Kiyoko, it was like a surge of energy was suddenly shot into her. As long as he was touching her, her cursed energy was rendered useless as the intensity of his energy forced hers down. It was the same if he were attacked with cursed energy or by a curse. If he applied enough of his own cursed energy into a curse, it would be exorcised and simply disappear. Since curses are purely made of energy, their attacks are useless against Milo as his cursed energy just cancels them out.*
"It's definitely aggressive," Gojo continued to remove his hand and put it back against Milo's. Whether Milo could control the direction of his energy flow, was up in the air. Perhaps it was due to the large amounts of cursed energy he had that made it difficult to manage. Kiyoko was unsure, after all the both of them had never had a teacher, everything was based purely on trial and error.
"Alright we finished answering your questions, can we go now?" Kiyoko pulled Milo away, and he gave a sigh of relief. Milo was Gojo's natural enemy, immune to his techniques he could prove to be quite dangerous in the future. It fascinated Gojo that such a technique existed. Anyways, he couldn't just leave the boy to wander publicly, especially since he's a...
Gojo scratched his head, "I sorta lied before. Before I let you guys go, I want to talk to your parents."
Kiyoko felt a rush of fear and anger flow through her. "What! Why?"
"Well you did try to steal from me…" She supposed she couldn't completely fault him for wanting to speak to her parents. However, there was a problem: she didn't have any parents. Also, how did she know that was the real reason he wanted to walk them home? He hadn't done anything to prove that he was trustworthy and not some creep looking to kidnap some children.
"Fine, fine, if that will finally get you to back off" Kiyoko said while standing up. Milo shot her a wary look, but she ignored it. She had a plan in mind, so she could finally flip the conversation on her side: she would lead Gojo to the center of the city, and then interrogate him. There's no way he could kidnap them if there were lots of other people nearby.
Gojo shot her a grin. He was interested in learning about the adults who took care of the two kids that had some of the most interesting curse techniques he had seen.
Basically, Milo's cursed energy is insanely intensive and powerful. (I like to imagine that his core of cursed energy is jagged rather than flowing smoothly. So that every time he's hit with cursed energy, it applies so much concentrated energy that it cancels out the attack.) If he's touching someone, he's remaining contact allowing a large flow of energy, and canceling ALL their energy. There's a reason why Milo has so much cursed energy, and why he's just naturally powerful.
