Chapter Two
Johanna walked down the hall of her high school, it being one of the top schools in Trollburg. Johanna had no choice on where she was to go to school as her parents just threw her in school there. Johanna looked at the front of her folder she held in her hand taped to the front was a picture of her and Kaisa. 'Kai I wish you were here with me', she said under her breath.
Johanna walked into the fourth hour and sat down at her desk sitting down her folders as the teacher walked in. The teacher walked to his desk picking up a paper that sat on it. He looked up "Johanna, can you come to my desk?", He asked he looked at her.
Johanna stood up and walked to the front of the room, the kids in the room their eyes laid on her, it felt like the whole world was looking at her. Standing before the desk Johanna waited for the words she knew were going to be said. "Did you tell her parents about the meeting tonight"?
"Yes', Johanna said lying of course she wouldn't tell her parents Johanna just planned to play it off as nothing was happening.
Johanna last week skipped a day of school to go out with Kaisa into the woods and a couple of hours in between when she would go to the library to be with Kaisa. Kaisa didn't go to school even though her and Johanna were of some age. As Kaisa chose to work at the library and study magic. Even though she didn't go to school she was a bright girl in many cases Kaisa would be helping Johanna when she didn't get something in school.
The bell rang and Johanna got up and walked down the hall to her locker opening it. Inside were pictures of Johanna and Kaisa somewhere hand-drawn by Johanna herself. It brought her back to her the moment she met Kasia.
Nine years ago
It was Johanna's first day of school as she had been homeschooled for the first couple of years her parents believed it would be better for her to learn at home than in a classroom. But when Johanna was about eight years old they thought it would be good for her to go to school.
Johanna thought she had made a friend, her name was Karen as Johanna before this had really never talked to kids her own age choosing to go out in the woods alone and draw while out there beginning her enjoyment of drawing.
Johanna was invaded by her so-called friend to go play at the park with a group of other kids. When they got there they played catch and kickball and Johanna had a good time until the group moved to the playground equipment. There a tree sat in the middle and below with a book in her hands and her cloak wrapped around was a raven-haired girl she sat not even looking up as the kids ran around so focused on the book that was in her hands. Johanna saw the girl but so did Karen and her friends. Karen looked over to the three girls who stood behind Johanna. The three girls and Karen walked over to the girl under the tree. "Hey Johanna give us one Minute", Karen said, looking back at Johanna who was wondering what was going on.
"Hey look it's the little Librarian", Said Karen as she grabbed the book out of the girl's hands.
Johanna's eyes widened as she watched. "They can't do that to her", Johanna said under her breath.
The girl got up and panic on her face. " Please….l...l..let….me have…..my….book' the girl said.
"Here", Karen threw the book and it landed in the hands of one of her friends." Oh I'm sorry".
They threw the book around to one another as the girl tried to get it. Johanna watched and anger filled within her. "Give her the book', Johanna spoke clearly with anger in her voice.
All the girls' eyes laid on the brown-haired girl with blue eyes who now had moved closer to the circle of girls.
"Come on Johanna', Karen said.
"No, Give her the book".
Not having it anymore and seeing the girl who was scared, Johanna ran at Karen who had the book in her hand, and tackled her to the ground pulling the book out of her hands. "I said give me the book', Johanna said as she got up.
She walked over to the girl handing her the book. "Johanna if you want to help the loser you can be like her alone", Karen said as the group of girls walked away.
"Are you ok?'. Johanna asked.
The girl hugged her book and looked at her " Y..y...yes".
"Ok good do you want to play with me"?
The girl looked at her and nodded.
"So what's your name?", Johanna asked.
"Kaisa", Said the girl.
"I like that name, You must already know my name".
"Jo….Johanna".
Johanna remembered how much Kaisa was scared to be with her but as the weeks passed Kaisa began to open up to Johanna and two became close to what they were now.
Johanna stayed on this thought until the bell rang and she closed her locker and began to walk to her next class.
Johanna walked home with her backpack over her shoulder. Having to walk by Tildy's House on her way home she would normally see Kaisa waiting for her sitting out on the front steps with a book she is normally reading with only one ear covered by her headset to her Walkmen. But Kasia wasn't outside. "Um Kaisa, most of us had to stay at the library to work", Johanna thought as she kept walking.
Making it to her home Johanna walked up the front steps opening the door. "I'm Home', Johanna yelled, closing the door behind her and making her way to the stairs.
She walked up the stairs that laid before walking up to them and down the hall to her room. She opened the door and into the room where her bed laid along the wall with her desk along the wall at the foot of her bed. Johanna sat down her bag beside the door. She walked over and sat down on the bed and looked at the wall before her. "This is going to be a long night, I can just feel it".
The sound of a ringing phone downstairs had taken Johanna from her work that sat before her on the desk as she put down her pancal and walked to the door to hear what was going on.
"WHAT', is all she heard of her father's voice.
"Are you sure?', He asked.
He then yelled for Johanna's mom who was in the kitchen making dinner.
"Johanna never gave us any papers about tonight'.
Johanna heard the word about papers which were about her skipping and missing classes she had Kaisa use and magic and burn them.
"They called us, they have never done that before', Johanna said to herself "I am so dead' .
"Ok you can tell us everything else when we get there', Johanna's father said getting off the phone.
Next was the sound of heavy footsteps on the stairs. Johanna ran over to her bed sitting down on it waiting for her father to make it to her room she already knew it was him. "JOHANNA!' He yelled, making his way to the door opening with a bang and as opened, hitting the wall.
"WHY did you not tell us about the Parent-teacher conference?".
Johanna said nothing just looking at the man who was now redder than a tomato with rage.
"If you don't tell me I will find out what you have done and why you never told us about this.
Johanna stood her ground now crossing her arms still not saying a word.
He just looked at her. "Fine but when it finds out you may never get to leave this House,'.
Like that has ever stopped Johanna as she has always found a way out of the house when grounded.
He shook his head walking to the door and out slamming the door behind him.
Johanna got up off her bed and walked over to her chair falling back into it. "Shit, I am so dead'.
"Johanna", a voice from downstairs yelled.
Johanna grabbed her flannel shirt off the back of her chair and walked out the door of her room and to the stairs, she walked down them and into the main area of the house. "Johanna is that what you are going to wear?' Johanna's mom asked.
Johanna just looked at her without saying a word walking over to the door opening it and making her way outside to her parents' car which sat on the side of the street her parents walked out as she left they followed her to the car getting in her father driving her mother getting in Looking at Johanna who was looking out the window.
Kasia laid her head pounded, she opened her eyes and the room spun her breathing grew heavy but a familiar scent went into her nose "Johanna' she said as she sat with lighting speed. Johanna scent in the room from all the times she was in there.
She got up off the bed and made a run to the door. She looked over to see it was six o'clock. Tildy had been up a couple of times to check on her.
Kasia walked out the door fighting herself to stay standing and down the stairs almost falling on her way down. Tiildi, who sat in her armchair in the living room, looked at Kaisa as she made her way down the stairs watching her seeing the pain that was on Kaisa's face. "Kaisa", Tildi said standing up.
"I…...I am going….out for some air", Kaisa said, her face white as a ghost.
"Kaisa you don't look good. Here sit…".
"No….I'm fine".
Kasia made her way to the door opening it. Tildi watched as she walked out, closing the door behind her. Tildi got up going for her coat. "Kaisa may hurt someone.
A thought when into Tildi's mind "Johanna", she said fearfully.
Kaisa made her way outside her mind become foggier with every step she took. She moved down the street having no clue what to do, it just kept going worse and worse until something took over Kaisa pulled herself into a dark alleyway taking every last bit of her self control to do so, and fell to the ground her heart began to pound in her chest so loud she could hear it. She was sweating and finding it hard to breathe. "What...is happening to me?", Kaisa asked.
Kaisa moved to try to get up but she fell to the floor. She looked at her hands as her body began to change, the sound of bones shifting bones could be heard, the pain moved through her, she let out a scream in pain as she fully came to the beast. A lion, bear mixed with a wolf stood in Kaisa's spot it had purple eyes it stood at least seven to eight-feet tall with black fur.
At that moment, a car drove in the car sat Johanna who looked at the window her eyes caught the large shadow in the alleyway but she shook her head thinking it was nothing. The creature followed hiding in alleyways and behind buildings moving fix to keep up with the car having picked up Johanna's scent as the car passed by.
Johanna and her parents got to the school and her father parked the car getting out without saying a word. Johanna got out of the car looking out into the wooded area between two buildings there she saw a shadow again of something large. Johanna blinked and it was gone. "Maybe it's my mind seeing things again', Johanna said, crossing her fingers hoping she was right.
Johanna sat next to her parents who didn't speak to her but kept giving her side glances hoping Johanna would come out and say what was going on.
All three watched as the principal walked in taking a seat at the desk before them. Johanna's parents shook hands with the principal before taking a seat once again.
"So by your reaction on the phone I guess Johanna didn't give you the papers?', asked the principal.
"No, Sorry we really don't know what has gotten into our daughter lately", said Johanna's father.
"At least we have started calling the parents now to inform them if something is going on".
The principal pulled out a paper handing it to Johanna's father. "Here is the letter I made a copy of .''
Johanna looked away. She didn't want to be doing this but everything she has been doing has caught up to her and if Kaisa can face having troubles at learning magic she can face her parents head-on.
No words were spoken from her father who only put his head down placing it in his hand handing the paper to her mother.
After she finished she sat down on the paper and looked at her husband who she waited to respond to the letter. Once he saw she was done he looked at her then to Johanna.
"JOHANNA you skipped school", Anger came out in her fathers voice. "What the hell were you doing".
Johanna stood up. "I….was seeing Kaisa'.
"You where what?...I thought I said not to see that girl'.
"You don't care what I want do you? It's always what you want father'.
Johanna's father stood now everyone's eyes on him.
"I do care for what you want Johanna'.
'Are you sure I want to be able to see Kaisa'.
'No, she is trouble'.
"She is not , you just don't get her'.
Johanna could feel tears filling behind her eyes and she fought herself not to cry.
"Father, this proves you don't care. I want to see Kaisa'.
"Johanna…..'He was stopped by a hand on his shoulder by his wife.
"Dear we will do this later, Johanna's mom said looking at her husband.
Johanna walked to the door. "Johanna come and sit', Said Johanna's mom.
"No, I just need some time to myself.
Before leaving she turned back to her parents.
"Oh yeah I forgot to say this to you I am Dating Kaisa', Johanna said running out the door.
Her parents were taken back about what came out of her mouth. Johanna ran down the hallway and out the main doors of the school beginning to cry all she had held back had come out.
Johanna left the school running down the street, tears falling down her face. "They don't care about my feelings, only their own feelings and what they want ".
A large figure follows behind staying a distance away. Johanna took a right turn into the woods; she just needed to get away from her parents at least five minutes before they sent a search party after her. Once inside she quit running and walked through one of Johanna's favorite spots to be at an area with trees that cover most of the ground leaving shade when the sun was out In this spot there was a break that let you see the sky. Here is where her and Kaisa would lay watching the clouds in the daylight and the stars in the moonlight.
The moonlit up the woods and the trees had begun to lose their leaves. Fall was happening and the nights grew colder. Johanna walked around the area taking in the views even if she had seen it a million times it was still beautiful to her she loved it out there her sketchbook was filled with trees and rocks and whatever caught her eye.
Johanna's mind stayed on the thought of her drawings until the sound of breaking leam was heard. Johanna took no time to wait as she thought it might be someone out there looking for her. She took off running the wind blowing her hair back and her arms moved and swung at every step she took. But when Johanna took a moment to look back her foot got caught on a rock sending her down the hill before her. She rolled along the hill trying to stop herself and was unable to she hit her head on a rock knocking her out cold. Blood streamed down Johanna's face and dirt covered her body and clothes. Leaves clung to her hair Johanna laid flat on her back one arm across her body and the other out to her side. The person or thing that was following her walked to the hillside it took big steps as it walked to the hill it looked down at Johanna growling. The large creature made its way down the hill to where she was. Johanna's head laid on its side, blood now covered part of her face. The creature wiped her face with one of its fingers clearing the blood the best it could. With one hand it lifted Johanna into its arm where it began to move with a slow walk with Johanna.
Johanna laid in the Creatures arm as it walked through the woods like a wolf on all fours but with one arm holding Johanna. The Creature walked slowly, not too fast trying not to move not wanting to take a risk of hurting Johanna. looking down at her at random moments to look at the girl to make sure she was ok.
The Creature back hit tree brushes as it passed under them. Its feet left marks in the dirt it breathing heavy but yet soft. Its purple eyes seemed to glow in the moonlight.
There was a spot it made its way to that Johanna would know a place that meant a lot to her.
Making it to a tree that had a heart carved in it with a K+J in it The Creature Layed down Johanna next to the tree slowly moving its arms from out under her. Moving back lowering itself sitting watching Johanna waiting for her to wake.
Almost 15 minutes passed but the Creature didn't move, it stayed in its place watching around them and Johanna listing for sounds smelling making sure no other scents were around.
But soon Johanna begins to wake, catching the Creature's full attention. As she slowly woke. Johanna's eyes fluttered open. As her sight came back she looked around the moon lighting up the area with its dime light. But the sound of heavy breathing nearby made Johanna take note of something or someone near to her, a bear hell even a troll coming to kill her Johanna saw the shadow of a large figure above watching her. Johanna looked into the glowing purple eyes above and she couldn't move out of fear. Her mind went back to what happened up to this point. "I was running from something and BAM I went down a hill headfirst but how did I get here", Her mind questioned.
But her mind went to the Baby. "God please let the baby be ok", the words left Johanna's mouth with a whisper.
The Creature heard her voice and slowly moved its head to get a look at Johanna's face. Johanna saw it move to her voice. "It's going to eat me", Johanna thought. "Here's where it ends".
But something about its eyes as they got closer had something familiar to them as if she has looked into them a million times. "Kasia', Johanna Said.
Kaisa reacted by moving her large paws to cover her face, shameful of what she looked like. Johanna stood up but almost lost her balance as she stood she gripped on the tree her hand went against the cravings in the tree. "You brought me to our tree Kaisa", Johanna started looking at Kaisa who still had her face covered.
The tree they sat by was the spot Kaisa confused her feelings to Johanna. After that with a pocket knife she kept on her, Johanna carved their initials into the tree right where they shared their first kiss.
Johanna who could stand up straight made her way to Kaisa a hand out before her as she slowly walked forward. "Kaisa please move your hands from your face", Johanna said trying to calm Kaisa who was scared of Johanna hating the way she looked.
Johanna placed her hands on her hips. "Kai please'.
Kaisa Lowered her paws and looked at Johanna who stood only feet away. Johanna placed one of her hands out Kaisa moved her head to where it was right beside Johanna's hand slowly resting into it. Johanna petted Kaisa's head as if she was a dog.
"Kai,'' Johanna said, moving to place a kiss on Kaisa's furry head.
Kaisa grabbed Johanna pulling her into a hug Johanna's head rested on Kaisa's chest her feet off the ground. They stayed like this embracing each other for a while Johanna could hear Kaisa's breath heavy but slow. Johanna pulled away Kaisa placing her back on the ground. Johanna placed a hand on one of Kaisa's paws that laid in her lap.
"Kaisa I love you no matter what happens', Johanna said to reassure Kaisa.
Kaisa lifted a paw and placed it around Johanna's head where she melted into Kaisa's touch.
Kaisa's eyes stayed on Johanna, not moving to try to let out an I love you but only coming out as a whimper. "I love you", Said Johanna who placed a hand on the paw around her face.
Johanna thought she could stay like this forever would be better then going back to her parents.
But the happy moment faded as Kaisa moved her paw from Johanna stumbling back letting out a scream in pain Johanna watched as Kaisa fell to her hands and Knees with a cry of pain. Kaisa's body began to return to its normal size, the sound of bones cracking and moving made Johanna wince in pain but the large monster was gone leaving the young Librarian behind laying with a ripped cloak and what was left of her clothing. Johanna fell to her knees and she watched Kaisa crawl on the ground to her. She still had her claws and pointy ears and fangs but it was Kaisa.
Kasia fell into Johanna's lap as Johanna sat crisscrossed on the ground. Kaisa left hand laid on Johanna's knee and the other out before her. "Jo….Johanna', Kaisa said, still short-breathed from the transformation back to herself.
"Kaisa', Johanna said, tears falling from her eyes, "How did this happen ``?
"Casted….A spell…...God I messed up".
"Kaisa…..we can fix this'.
"Jo….Tildi doesn't…...know what to do".
Johanna bagin to worry if she couldn't help Kaisa who could. "There has to be someone".
Watching Kaisa shake from the cold Johanna reached up and unbuttoned her flannel shirt, pulling it off. "Here Kaisa", Johanna said, placing the shirt around her.
"Jo….I am fine".
"Yeah but…", Johanna stopped herself beginning to brush. "I don't want you getting cold'.
"What... about you?'.
"I'll be fine".
Johanna wrapped her arms around Kaisa as the girl laid her head on her lap Kaisa looked up every once in a while to get a look at Johanna. Who hummed to her as they took in each company.
Kaisa having been in a fog snice the transformation into the beast Jumped up as the thought of the baby crossed her mind. "Johanna the baby', Kaisa said, placing a hand on Johanna's
Stomach.
Kaisa's mind went to her hearing. She was able to hear Johanna's heartbeat when she was laying in her lap. Maybe she can hear the baby's even if it is a lot smaller at this point.
Kaisa moved her head to Johanna Stomach placing her ear next to it. Kaisa's eyes widened. "Jo I can hear its heartbeat', Kaisa said, turning her head to look up at Johanna.
"You can', Tears forming into Johanna's eyes.
"I could hear yours when I was laying on Your lap', Kaisa said. "My hearing in this form is something else".
Johanna stayed silent, she just looked at Kaisa who kept eye contact with her, "Can we talk about this later Kaisa', Johanna said.
"What's wrong Jo i am ok to talk about it'.
"I just want to wrap my mind around this whole thing a little more'.
Kaisa lifted her head off of Johanna's lap now her face only inches from Johanna's.
"It's fine, it's a lot to take in, ''' Kaisa said, moving in for a kiss.
Kaisa stayed back down in Johanna's lap Johanna mind raced with thoughts of the baby, Kaisa Curse and her parents but she was taken out of her thoughts by a familiar voice of a black haired witch.
"Jo".
"Yes'.
'Have you thought what to name the baby'.
"Yeah kind of'.
"What are the names you came up with'.
"Luke if it's a boy and Hilda if it's a girl' .
"I like those names", Kaisa reached up running her fingers through Johanna's hair pulling the leaves out form when she had fallen only two hours ago.
"Johanna I love you', Kaisa said, closing her eyes.
"I love you to Kaisa".
Johanna sat watching Kaisa who was now asleep , she looked down at her. "And I will stay by your side no matter what", Johanna said resting her back more against the tree. "And one day this baby will love you too just the way you are', Joahanna said, closing her eyes.
