"Hey, Maki Roll?"
"What?" Maki looked up from her spot in the library with a chilling glare, which Kaito either didn't notice or didn't care about.
She was curled up on one of the plush chairs with one of her favorite books, as he approached with a tray containing two bubble teas.
"Mind if I join you? I brought us drinks." He said, offering her the taro flavored milk tea. She accepted the cup with a raised eyebrow.
"How'd you know this one is my favorite?"
"You're kidding right? I see you walking around school with these all the time."
"Oh, so you do pay attention sometimes." She teased as she moved over, leaving him space to sit down next to her.
"Well, y'know, when I want to!" He responded with a carefree grin. "Listen, there's actually something I wanna talk to you about."
"Oh, I see. So this is bribery boba?"
"No, not at all! It's just, look...you don't have a date to prom yet, do you?"
"I hope you're not going with this where I think you are."
"Just answer the question, Maki Roll."
She sighed, biting the corner of her lip. "No, I don't. To tell you the truth, I'm probably not even going to go to prom."
"Why not?"
"Come on...parties? Dancing? Not really my thing, wouldn't you say?"
"Well, sure...but you never know! You might have fun!"
"I guess I'll never know."
"What if we go together? Just as friends, obviously. But we can do whatever you want, leave whenever you want. All I ask is we get coordinating outfits."
"Well, that's a dealbreaker right there."
They laughed together, breaking the tension.
"Please?" He said finally, smiling kindly behind the straw of his boba. "I'd love for you to be there."
Maki stared at the floor for a moment before finally meeting his gaze.
"Alright. I'll go."
"Yes!" He exclaimed, earning a shushing from a nearby librarian. He sat back down and burst into a breathless spiel.
"What colors did you want to do? You'd look nice in pink, of course, but I'm more fond of green myself and I'd hate for us to clash..."
"Whatever you want. Just let me know and I'll go along." She interjected, his enthusiasm admittedly rubbing off on her.
"Really?! Oh-ho-ho, you're gonna regret that!"
Maki's eyes grew wide in terror.
"Kidding, kidding! I'll think of something that'll work for both of us. Later!"
He practically skipped out of the library, singing "I'm going to prom with Maki Roll! I'm going to prom with Maki Roll!" to himself as he left.
Maki shook her head with a smile and settled back into her book, now in a substantially better mood.
