Growing Up Within the Nest
Chapter 2
Forge stifled a groan as he forced his eyes open, glancing around the room the best he could without moving. His green eyes surveyed the room for a moment before he pushed himself into a sitting position. The desk was bare besides a single child's toy, a small stuffed Nadder. The dragon raised boy stood up slowly making his way towards the doorway, listening to the raised voices from somewhere else in the house.
"Valka listen to yourself. You want me to believe that those beasts didn't kill our son but instead raised him?! Do you realize how crazy that sounds right now!?" Stoick yelled.
"What do you want me to believe Stoick? That the boy just happens to have the same scar on his chin that our Hiccup did? That his hair isn't the same shade of brown mine is? Those are so much more than just coincidences." Valka pleaded. Forge raised an eyebrow before he slowly made his way down the stairs, inching closer as he watched them stand around a table. The woman had her hair separated into two braids that fell down her back while the man was huge. His red beard was unruly, and Forge could see the axe strapped at his side. He glanced around the living room, searching for his gear when neither of them spoke another word.
"That…boy isn't our son Valka. He is a demon that was raised by beasts." Stoick stated, turning away from the table. His eyes narrowed when he spotted the boy leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Valka glanced over her shoulder as she poked the fire when her husband grew silent. She quickly stood up, wiping her hands on her pants as she turned to face the boy that she was sure was her son.
"You're awake. I hope you're hungry." she stated, moving away from the fire to grab three bowls. Stoick glared at the boy, crossing his arms.
"The demon probably can't understand you. Only speaks the beasts tongue." He stated, turning away to sit at the table. Forge glared at the Viking chief, standing up straight.
"Stoick…" Valka started.
"Actually, I can speak your tongue. I just don't see the point in talking to someone so stuck in his stupid ways." Forge finally stated. Valka faltered as she stared at the boy, sharing a surprised look with her husband.
"I wasn't raised just with the dragons. I was raised by a village far outside the Archipelago called the Defenders of the Wing. People who understand that dragons aren't what so many of you seem to think they are." Forge sneered. Stoick slammed his fist down on the table in anger, his face red with fury.
"Those beasts are not pets or friends or whatever your demented mind thinks they are! They kill hundreds of us, steal our food and destroy our homes!" he yelled. He shoved his chair back before he stormed out of the house, leaving Valka and Forge staring after him. Valka sighed before she shook her head, turning to the boy she was sure was her son. She offered him a kind smile before sitting the two bowls down on the table.
"I'm not the greatest cook but I made stew if you're hungry." She offered. Forge slowly walked over to the table, looking down at the bowl. It had been a while since he'd had anything other than fish since the Great Alpha hadn't allowed him to leave the protection of their home since they'd fought against a group of dragon hunters that had attempted to take the Great Defender. Valka watched as he sat down at the table before she turned her attention back to her own bowl.
"He's not normally like that. It's just…we'd given up any hope that you would ever return to us. You were just a baby when you were taken from your crib during a dragon raid. But I just knew…deep in my heart that you weren't dead." She stated after several awkward moments of silence. Hiccup glanced at her before he raised the spoon to his mouth taking a bite. He watched the woman with an unsure look on his face. When she received no response the two of the continued to eat in silence, neither really knowing what to say. Forge looked up when she stood up and walked towards the door.
"I'll be back in a bit. Please just…stay in the house." She stated before she stepped outside with no further words. He continued to sit in the silence, the fire light dancing across his skin. He glanced out the window, resting his head against his hand in annoyance. They expected him to stay in their house like a prisoner, but he had been raised by dragons and warriors, so staying still wasn't always his strong suit. He easily snuck out of the house through one of the back windows that faced the forest.
FOREST
Toothless released a growl as he opened his eyes, his vision blurry as he attempted to figure out just where he was. He attempted to stretch his wings, quickly realizing they were trapped against his body. He released a distressed growl, hoping to attract the attention of another dragon that was hopefully nearby. After several failed attempts to untangle himself from the net he laid back down on the ground unmoving. The Nightfury had barely closed his eyes when he heard the sound of something stepping on a stick. He jerked his eyes open, his pupils narrowing as he searched for any signs of whatever had made the noise.
"Who's there?! Show yourself coward!"he sneered, baring his sharp teeth. He relaxed slightly when Forge stepped out into the clearing, glad to see his brother hadn't been harmed when they were shot out of the sky. He quickly pulled the knife hidden in his boot, moving forward to start cutting on the ropes that kept Toothless grounded.
"The Alpha is going to kill us when he finds out what happened." Forge groaned, already thinking about just how much trouble they had managed to get themselves into. He'd warned them to stay out of reach of the Vikings weapons and because he'd been reckless it had nearly gotten both of them killed. Once enough of the ropes had been cut away Toothless stood up, shaking his body.
"It was my fault not yours. I should have said no instead of trying to dive into danger. What did we expect to happen when clearly these Vikings have no issues shooting down any dragons whether we were helping steal or not?"Toothless growled. He spread his wings, turning his head as he attempted to check for any damage. Forge sighed before he sat against the tree log, leaning his head back. He closed his eyes as he bangs fell in his face. His mind wandered to the woman that had offered him just a small bit of kindness while her husband had clearly wanted to strike him down where he stood. He jerked up startled when he heard the angered growl that sounded from his brother.
"What's wrong?" he questioned, pushing himself to his feet, attempting to ignore the small jolt of pain that went through his legs.
"I can't fly! That…that thing…" Toothless sneered, his teeth visible as he stared at his tail. Forge felt his heart drop into his stomach as he moved to run his fingers along the damaged tail flap. He took a deep breath in an attempt to regain his composure, attempting to think of a solution to their situation. It would take time for him to try and find the materials that he would need to try and create a new tail, but it seemed like it might be their only option.
"We need to find somewhere for you to hide so that the Vikings don't find you while you can't get away." Forge stated as he glanced around the forest, his green eyes resting on what looked to be a riven. Toothless grumbled as he followed his brother towards the rocky cliffs, glancing down at the lake that sat undisturbed. Both of the boys knew that this wasn't their safest option since clearly it wasn't easy to find unless you knew just where to look.
"I'll bring you back some fish once I'm able to catch some. And I'll sneak into the forge during the night to try and work on a new tail for you. I shouldn't run into too many issues if I work at night while everyone else is asleep. But I have to get back before anyone notices me missing and they try to tighten the restrictions." Forge stated, glancing over his shoulder. He pressed his forehead against Toothless' before he turned to trek back to the village.
