Ellie remained bedridden for about a week after that before Owen was comfortable discharging her from the infirmary. Once she was up and about again, Julius took her around the Royal Capital and showed her all of the places he felt that she would need to know until she was situated enough to feel comfortable going out on her own. A while they were touring the capital, Julius explained the situation Ellie now faced.
Ellie knew that she couldn't go back to the Diamond Kingdom, for her own safety more than anything else, and hearing that Julius could help her start a life in the Clover Kingdom was a relief. The King of the Clover Kingdom had asked that she provide any information about her former home in exchange for citizenship and Ellie was more than willing to oblige- even if it was just to ensure that no one else had to go through what she did.
"Now, I'm really curious about your magik. Why don't we find a nice spot for you to show me what you can do?"
Ellie wasn't too proud of her magik, as it proved not strong enough to help her during the experiments, but Julius had already done so much for her so she agreed. "S-Sure."
Julius watched as Ellie took a deep breath and summoned her grimoire, casting a simple but effective spell that she had learned. As she called out the spell, "Twilight Burst", the Wizard King's eyes widened with joy and excitement as a burst of mana colored like twilight skies shot up into the sky and dissipated.
Ellie put her grimoire away and rubbed her arm sheepishly. "My magik is strongest during twilight, but I do have a spell that can help in a pinch."
"Twilight Magik?"
Ellie nodded. "It's not that great, to be honest, and I can't do much."
"What are you saying, Ellie? Your magik is amazing! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before!"
Ellie looked up at him, surprised. "R-Really?" She hadn't expected anyone to be in as much awe as Julius was of her magik.
"Put in some training, grow as a mage, and you'll learn to see how wonderful your magik is," Julius said, encouraging her. "You could even participate in the Magik Knights Entrance Exam!"
"What's that?"
"It's an annual event where mages from all over the kingdom come for a chance to be accepted into the ranks of a squad of the Magic Knights. They participate in the different tests given by the Magik Knight Captains to test their abilities."
Ellie began to panic the more Julius explained the exam as images of the experiments came rushing back. "I-I can't...!"
Julius could see her distress and stopped talking about it. "Are you alright?"
Ellie sank down onto a nearby bench and held herself. "I-I'm sorry..."
Julius seemed to understand why she reacted the way she did and sat next to her. "It's alright. I didn't even think about how similar the exam would be to what you had to endure."
Ellie sighed, tried to calm down. "I appreciate the confidence you place in me..." she started, "but I just can't... I'm sorry..."
"I should be the one apologizing, Ellie," Julius said, reaching over to touch her shoulder. "Take your time."
Ellie nodded meekly and took a few moments to settle down. When she felt normal again, she looked up at Julius and offered him a small but apologetic smile. "I-I'm alright now, I think."
Julius returned her smile and stood. "Good. Come with me, there's one more place we need to see."
Ellie stood and followed him through the cobblestone streets until they reached a two-story bakery shop. "What is this place?"
"Your new home," Julius said with a soft grin and stepped inside the shop.
Ellie, confused and curious, followed him inside and was greeted by the aroma of fresh baked goods- from bread to pies to pastries.
"Ah, Julius, good to see you again!"
Julius greeted the woman who owned the bakery. "Molly, it's good to see you, too. This is Ellie, the girl I was telling you about."
Upon hearing her name, Ellie looked at the two and waved shyly at Molly. "H-Hello."
"It's nice to meet you, Ellie," Molly said. "The suite is all ready for you."
"The what?"
"Come with me and I'll show you."
Ellie looked at Julius for a moment, then followed Molly back outside and to the stairway leading up to the door on the second floor. Molly unlocked the door and gestured for her to go inside first, then stood with Julius stood by the door as Ellie looked around the suite.
The upstairs suite was a single room with wooden walls, floors, and a ceiling, and it was had a cozy cabin feel to it. On the back wall, a couple of wall hangings hung on either side of a candle holder sculpture, and a potted plant in the corner near the door. On the wall opposite of the door was a small kitchen station with an oven, stove, a sink, and plenty of working space, and between the door and the kitchen sat a table and chairs atop a round rug. Next to the kitchen station was a small wardrobe with a mirror, then along the windowed wall at the front of the building sat a bed atop a rectangular rug with the same design as the rounded one. In the corner opposite of the bed sat a bathtub with a room divider next to it to give some privacy. On the wall opposite of the kitchen station, where the door was, hung a clock and a few hanging planters with flowering plants.
"Well, what do you think?"
"This... this is all for me..?"
"I promised that I would help you start a new life here," Julius replied, nodding. "This place is yours as long as you need and want it."
Ellie was tearful almost immediately and rushed forward to hug the Wizard King. She was so unbelievably grateful for him doing so much for her.
Molly chuckled, seeing Julius caught off guard but relieved at the same time. When Ellie stepped back and recomposed herself, she reached forward and handed the girl the keys. "It's all yours, my dear, and if you ever need anything I'm just downstairs."
Ellie thanked them both and took another look around her new home, still in disbelief that her life was changing as much as it was- and for the better.
"There's one last thing, Ellie," Julius said. "How would you like to come work with me?"
Ellie beamed at him, still teary-eyed, and nodded. "I'd be honored."
