Hailey didn't have to wait too long, since the raid had gone smoothly and Jay got back at time. He looked pleased when Vanessa complimented him before heading upstairs.

"Hey Sarge, nice tackle. To be an old CO, you are still a pretty good partner. Good thing Hailey keeps you in fit."

Jay shook his head and laughed. He had grown to love Hailey's surrogate little sister and her witty humor.

"Good work you too, Officer."

Hailey couldn't help herself, he needed to hug Jay. Jay was a little amazed that she was so emotional, but hugged her back. Probably some hormonal thing, he thought and decided wisely to keep his remark to himself.

Kevin came to the garage just then and looked at them thoughtfully. Hailey and Jay weren't usually the ones showing too much public displays of affection, at least not when working. Was something going on?

Seeing Kevin look at them Hailey withdrew and told Jay she would go upstairs to help Vanessa. Jay nodded and started to put his things away. He asked Kevin something case related and Kevin focused on that. Maybe there was nothing going on.

They had been able to wrap things in time and head to the clinic.

Hailey's doctor was a nice lady, who had asked her questions about her well-being and menstrual cycle. After that she had asked Haley to move to the examination table.

"Given the potential stage of your pregnancy, it is wisest for us to perform an intravaginal ultrasound examination", she explained. "Then we will know better."

While lying there, Hailey felt herself pretty overwhelmed. Looking at Jay next to her, she reached out to hold his hand. Jay seemed to read her like always and smiled reassuringly.

Doctor Adams set the ultrasound sensor in and began to perform the examination.

"Congratulations to both of you! This confirms without doubt that you really are pregnant", she said smiling and turned the monitor so they could see it.

Hailey and Jay looked in disbelief at the black circle and light spot inside it. It looked surreal.

"This is your baby", the doctor pointed out the lighter area. "Measurements correspond to eight weeks of pregnancy. There's also a strong heartbeat."

Doctor put the sounds on. Quick beats, like a gallop, filled the room.

Haley felt tears pricking her eyes. Jay squeezed her hand tighter. She turned to look at him. His green eyes looked back to hers, tears falling on his cheeks. The smile on his face was even bigger than on their wedding day.

"I'll print some prints for you", the doctor told them before removing the sensor.

While she was printing pictures, Jay leaned down to kiss Hailey to the forehead.

"We are going to have a baby", he whispered.

Hailey nodded, her smile was mirroring his. She was speechless. She wasn't sure she had known this kind of happiness could exist.

After Hailey was dressed up they talked more with the doctor.

"Based on the baby's measurements and your latest period, I would say the fertilization has happened in mid-December. Your due date will be in the beginning of September", the doctor declared.

"I recommend that we do a new ultrasound in about four weeks when the first trimester again in the mid-pregnancy, then you can also find out the baby's gender, if you want to", she continued.

Hailey nodded. There's something she wanted to ask. She has been Doctor Adams' patient for years and she knew what Hailey was doing for her job.

"You know my job… What do you think about that?"

Dr. Adams looked at her, her face more serious. "I know your job is important to you and I can not tell you what to do, but I can not also tell you that it will always be safe. Usually the baby is quite well protected by the mother's pelvis during the first trimester, but I assume your job could include quite extreme situations, so it would be different. But otherwise than potentially violent situations, you can do almost everything you feel good to do. Exercising, being intimate, that is all really okay when it feels good to you."

Hailey nodded. Sex was another thing she had wanted to ask about. Luckily to her, the doctor was quicker.

Jay listened intently. He had stayed silent. As much as he wanted to be part of everything, he also wanted to respect Hailey's self-determination.

They talked a little about Hailey's pregnancy symptoms and how she could handle those. Doctor prescribed some vitamins to her and congratulated them both once more before they left.

They walked to the car holding hands.

"This requires celebration. Bartoli's?" Jay asked when they got to the car. "Or is the pizza something you think you could eat? Do you want something else?"

"Bartoli's is okay. Can we collect it on the way home?", Hailey suggested.

Jay called their order and drove to the restaurant. He noticed Hailey being unusually quiet during the drive, and glanced at her from the corner of his eye. She looked pensive. Jay knew Hailey well enough to know that she sometimes needed time to think about. He also knew what she was thinking. Her job.

Jay went to pick up the pizza and Hailey stayed in the car. Like Jay had known, she couldn't not to think about what her doctor had said about her work and its possible risks. Seeing their baby and hearing heart beats had made everything more real. She understood that she needed to make her decision soon.

At home they ate their pizza dinner and talked about the doctor's appointment and baby. It warmed Hailey's heart to see how excited and happy Jay was. She also noticed that Jay avoided talking about what she would want to do regarding the risks of her job. She valued his attempt to give her space and time, but she knew they needed to talk about it today.

Like yesterday, Jay cleaned the kitchen and told Hailey to go to rest. When he had done his job, he came to the living room and sat down next to her, his hand finding its way on her belly right away.

Hailey smiled at him. "I think I know what I want to do. No, I know what I want to do."

Jay looked a little surprised. He had thought this might take little more time.

"So?"

"Do you know what my biggest fear of being a parent is?", Hailey asked.

Jay looked at her and took her hand to his, like wanting to support her.

"My biggest fear is that I would be like my dad. That I would hurt my kid and not to protect her. When I saw our baby, although she or he still looks like a shrimp, I knew that I need to protect her. Even if it would mean nine months of desk duty. If I continue to work normally, and end up hurting her, it would kill me. I can't take that risk. And whatever you say, I know it would kill you if you were the one who ordered me on the field. You would blame yourself", she said with teary eyes.

"So this means, you must transfer me to the modified desk duty from tomorrow. Consider this as my notice to my supervisor", she continued, now smiling.

Jay looked at her in awe. He shifted even closer to her and took her to his embrace.

"Hailey, you are not like your dad. You are going to be an amazing mom. The best", he whispered against her hair. "You don't know how happy this all makes me. You were right it would have killed me to send you to the field, knowing what could happen. I may be selfish, but I can't deny it."

"Jay. You are the least selfish person I know. You just want to protect the ones you love, whatever it takes. That's one reason I love you so much and the biggest reason why you are going to be the best dad ever", Hailey told him.

"I love you too. Both of you", Jay said and kissed the top of her head and hugged her tighter.

After they had sat in silence for a moment, Jay realized something.

"If we tell the team tomorrow, I think I need to tell Will before it. He is my brother after all. He would be pissed if they knew first. He has been bothering us about the baby since the wedding. He will be excited. "

"You are right. How do you wanna tell him?", Hailey agreed. Will had really been hinting, not so subtle ways, that he wanted to be an uncle.

She knew Will and Jay were close and she liked Will a lot. With her own family she had complicated relations, and she knew Jay wouldn't push her to tell them.

"He's at work so I can't meet him before tomorrow. I could call him or send a message?", Jay pondered.

"I know", he said and snapped a photo from the ultrasound picture and then typed something before sending the message.

He showed Hailey what he had sent. There's a photo of the ultrasound and under that he had written "you can stop asking when we are going to have a baby".

After a while Will called Jay, being completely thrilled about becoming an uncle. They agree they would go for the beers and celebrate when they both would have free evening.

Hailey and Jay spend the rest of the evening in their own baby bubble. Admiring the ultrasound pictures and talking about what would happen when the baby was born. They knew it would be still a long road to go and anything could happen, but they wanted to savour the moment right now.

Next morning Jay sat at his office. They had agreed that they would talk with the team today, but there's something he needed to do first. He stood up and walked to the door.

"Kevin, would you come here?", he invited.

Kevin stood up and came in.

"Shut the door, please", Jay requested.

Kevin sat down opposite of Jay. He tried to read sergeant's expressions, but like always Jay didn't give anything out. That man was almost impossible to read, he thought. Well, to everyone else than Hailey, at least.

"What do you think about your career?" Jay asked.

Kevin looked confused.

"I know we have talked about this in the past and I said that I really think you should sit the detective exam. That opinion hasn't changed but now I need you to do it. I know I can't directly command you to do it and that's also not the way I want to lead this unit, but now I really ask you to consider doing that test. I have zero doubt that you would pass it flying", Jay spoke.

"I really value your trust, but why is this so important now?", Kevin asked.

"This unit needs two detectives and before you say it has those, I have to ask you to keep a secret for a little while."

Kevin nodded in agreement.

"We, Hailey and I, are going to have a baby. That means, Hailey will do modified desk duty from this day and she will be on maternity leave sometime in the late summer. So I need, this unit needs, another detective and I really hope it would be you", Jay looked Kevin directly in the eyes.

Kevin looked stunned. He had sensed something was going on, but this he hadn't guessed.

"Wow. Man, I am so happy for you both. I would hug you, but maybe we try to behave as normal as we can until you've told the others. Congratulations, this is wonderful news, really", Kevin said.

"Thanks man. We are happy."

Kevin looked at Jay and shook his head. This was huge. He didn't know if he had ever seen his friend smile so widely.

"Do you really think I would pass the test?", he asked.

"Absolutely!", Jay convinced.

"If I do it, would you help me to prepare? Or if you are busy, do you think Hailey would?" Kevin asked, almost shy.

"Of course, we'll help you prep. Hailey had been a little tired, but I can help as much as you need.", Jay reassured his friend. "We should start quite soon, since the next exam day is next month."

Kevin swallowed. "Well, I think I'll try it then."

"Awesome. I really value this highly", Jay said and stood up to shake Kevin's hand.

Men walked out of the sergeant's office, when Jay saw Platt coming up the stairs. The whole team also seemed to be present.

Jay looked at Hailey, asking her permission. Hailey smiled and nodded. Time to let the cat out of the bag.

"Guys, can I have your attention for a moment", Jay raised his voice.

Platt looked at him. "If this is Intellingence's briefing, I can come back later."

"No, I want you to stay", Jay ordered.

"Yes, sir", Trudy said, rolling her eyes.

"Starting today, I have made some alterations. Hailey will be on modified desk duty, starting from today. She will do interrogations and things like that, but she will not participate in raids, arrests or other possibly violent situations. If Rojas needs a partner for those, we will do some rotation or I'll be her partner. Later, I will talk with Sergeant Platt about possible temporary replacements", Jay informed.

He could see Kim was going to say something, so he continued.

"Because I know that you are well trained investigators, at least most of you", he grinned. "I know you have already calculated this. The answer is yes. Hailey is pregnant. It is still kinda early, but we don't want to take any risks", he said looking at Hailey who smiled at him.

The delightful congratulations filled the room. Vanessa plunged to hug Hailey, almost crushing her. Kim raised her hand.

"Kim, you can ask", Jay laughed.

"I have so many questions, but at first I want to know when is the due date?", Kim asked enthusiastically.

"In the beginning of September", Hailey answered.

Jay could see Kim was doing some mental calculations.

"You went on an anniversary trip with your wife and ended up getting one pregnant detective in your unit? Quite an accomplishment, Sergeant", she grinned when ending her calculations.

Teams burst laughing, including Hailey. Jay looked at her like saying you too?

"You know, she is right", Hailey giggled.

" I am not sure what the human resource department thinks about such a situation", Platt joked.

"Maybe we don't tell HR with those words", Jay smirked.

"So we have only one Detective when Hailey is on maternity leave?", Vanessa asked.

"Well that is the other change that is coming. Naturally Dave will be senior detective and I have no doubt he handles it well", Jay looked at Williams, who nodded back.

"Moreover, I have talked with Kevin, and he has agreed to do a detective's exam as soon as possible", Jay told them, smiling widely.

Everyone looked surprised but delighted. Both Voight and Jay had been pushing Kevin and Kim to that test for years now.

"Well, that's also fantastic news", Platt beamed.

"That's great, you will be an awesome detective", Kim said.

"So what does it take, that Atwater finally makes a detective, is Jay knocking Hailey up?", Adam joked.

"It seems so", Kevin responded while Hailey rolled her eyes.

Kim and Vanessa had surrounded Hailey, wanting to know everything. Adam and Kevin hugged Jay, before they left to talk with one of their CI.

Jay looked at Platt, nodding towards his room.

"I'd like to talk with you, if you have a little time?"

"Of course", Platt answered.

She followed Jay to his office and sat down.

"I will be one man down after Hailey is on leave. I could ask if they would loan Rixton from Gangs' but I would prefer to take someone new in. I think it would be better for team dynamics", Jay explained.

"I agree", Platt nodded.

"What I want to ask, do you have any ambitious and generally skilled officer you would loan us? Not yet, but maybe closer to summer", Jay continued.

"Do you try to steal my officers?", Platt laughed.

"Well, didn't go so bad with Kim and Kevin, so worth to try again", Jay flashed his trademark smirk to the older sergeant.

"To speak the truth, I know this unit is a dream come true for the many cops, and I don't want to be an obstacle in anyone's career", Trudy granted.

"Of course, I could ask from other units too, but I trust your judgement the most", Jay complimented his colleague.

"Thank you. I already have a couple names in my mind, I'll talk with them first and then send them to talk with you", Platt promised. "It would be a great opportunity for one of them to work in this unit with this team under your command."

"Thank you, and like I said, no hurry, there's still plenty of time for Hailey to go on maternity leave," Jay said.

"Oh, time flies, you will be a father soon. I really want to congratulate you once more, it was fantastic news. I have known you both so long and you have gone so far since you became partners. You deserve all the happiness and I am sure you are going to be wonderful parents. This is one lucky baby", Trudy said with a warm smile.

Jay looked at her. Trudy Platt was one tough lady, but she really had a good heart. Jay had grown to like her even more since he became a sergeant.

"Thank you Trudy, I appreciate your saying it", he answered.

"But if you told someone that I praised you, I would kill you", Platt teased.

"Point taken, Sarge", Jay smirked.

When Platt had left, Hailey came in. Her cheeks were flushed and she smiled happily.

"Did Kim and Vanessa wear you out with all their questions?", Jay asked.

"What do you think? Vanessa is already practically named herself as godmother", Hailey grinned

"Dear lord…", Jay shook his head and laughed.

"But seriously… it's nice they care. We don't have so much biological family, but yet our baby will have many aunts and uncles", Hailey said, looking touched.

Jay smiled, he had thought exactly the same thing.

"Yeah. This unit is one extraordinary and unique family", he phrased.

Together they walked to the bullpen, to be with their family.
