Chapter 2

Ianto heard the tourist door slam as Owen and Gwen dashed past him to where Jack had disappeared, whilst Tosh knelt beside him.

"Ianto are you ok?" she asked.

Owen and Gwen came back to Ianto, who they noticed was going into shock. They helped him stand.

"Ianto what happened? Where's Jack?" Gwen asked.

"The rift took him." he said. "Jack's gone."

Jack felt as if his very being was being ripped apart. Every cell in his body was screaming in agony. He prayed for death and the darkness as this was the worst pain he had ever felt, worse than the pain when he was dragged back to life. He felt like he was falling, but where to he had no idea. The pain slowly started to lessen when there was another flash of light and he landed flat on his face. He pushed himself up onto all fours and saw he was on a pavement. He stumbled as he stood up and looked around. He saw he was on some sort of housing estate.

"At least I'm still on Earth by the looks of it. Just when am I?" he asked no one in particular.

He started to walk around, trying to find something to give him a clue as to where and when he was. He walked past a pair of women chatting away, and did a double take at their accent. Welsh. So he was still in Wales. He breathed a sigh of relief. Now he just had to figure out when he was. By the looks of the clothes he hadn't gone too far back or forward.

He walked around the estate until he came to a main road, and saw a newsagents across the road. He ran across and stopped himself from running in. He didn't want to draw attention to himself. He hoped there was some sort of newspaper in there that would give him the date. He wandered around the shop and found the newspapers and magazines near the back. He picked up a national newspaper and looked at the date. 25th August 1983. He nearly dropped the newspaper. He couldn't be.

"Rhiannon Jones will you pick which sweets you want already?! Your brother is going to want a feed soon!" he heard a woman's voice call out.

He watched a small girl with pigtails run past him holding a small bag of sweets. "Can I have these please mummy?"

The woman put the bag and a couple of magazines on the counter. Jack walked a bit closer so he could hear the shopkeeper and the woman talking.

"Have you decided on a name yet for your handsome little man?" the shopkeeper asked smiling.

The woman sighed. "Finally! Took some doing but we finally chose one we all like."

The shopkeeper turned to the little girl. "So what's your baby brother's name?"

"Ianto" the little girl said proudly.

Jack stiffened. That baby. The little girl called Rhiannon. It couldn't be, could it?

"I've pulled up the CCTV!" Tosh called.

They all raced to Tosh's work station and watched the footage.

"So it just formed around Jack? How?" Gwen asked.

"I have no idea. I've never seen an opening like that before. Almost as if it were meant for Jack." Tosh replied.

Owen was watching Ianto, who looked like he was about to faint.

"Ianto mate I want to run some tests on you. That rift opening, or energy or whatever touched you too. I want to make sure it hasn't affected you" he said gently, putting his cold hand on Ianto's shoulder.

"That's a good idea. Any readings Owen takes might help me be able to track Jack and figure out what happened" she said. She took his hand and squeezed it.

He nodded and walked off toward the Med bay, still in a daze.

"Watch him" Tosh said quietly to Owen.

Jack followed Rhiannon and her mother out of the shop and followed them quietly. He had to know. He was so lost in his thoughts he tripped over a raised part of the pavement and landed with a thump on his front.

"Mister are you ok?" He looked up to see Rhiannon standing over him and her mother rushing forward with the pram.

"I-I'm fine" Jack stammered.

"You have to be careful of the pavements round here. Doesn't matter how many times we complain the council do nothing" Rhiannon's mother said rolling her eyes. She held out her hand and helped Jack up. He caught a glimpse of the baby inside the pram.

"How old?" he asked.

She smiled. "Almost a week. This is our first time out. He's so handsome I couldn't help wanting to show him off a little." She smiled softly at the tiny baby wrapped in blue blankets. "Little monkey took 24 hours to come out but it was all worth it."

Jack's heart skipped a beat as the baby yawned and opened its eyes. Eyes he had looked into hundreds of times. Those stormy blue eyes belonging to the man he cared about so much. The man he had left behind again.

"His name is Ianto!" Rhiannon said clapping excitedly.

Ianto started grizzling, a sound Jack recognised from experience as an 'I'm hungry' type of cry.

"I'm sorry I have to get him back for his feed" their mother apologised. "It was nice to meet you." She studied him for a moment. "Can I give you a little bit of advice? If you don't live on this estate leave as soon as you can. They don't take kindly to strangers, and I think your accent will make you more of a target." She took Rhiannon's hand and started to leave.

"Bye bye!" Rhiannon called waving. Jack, still stunned, waved back.

"How is your hand feeling?" Owen asked Ianto.

"Fine. No pain" Ianto answered dully.

"Well my scans are showing some residual rift energy around your hand. Does it feel any different?"

Ianto shrugged. "It felt a bit tingly after Jack disappeared but it's fine now. Got a banging headache though."

Owen went to the cabinet and pulled out some tablets. He gave two to Ianto. "Take these. We need everyone on full form if we are going to figure this out." He squeezed Ianto's shoulder. "We'll get him back Ianto. We got him and Tosh back from 1941. Jack will leave us some sort of sign and we will bring him back. Hopefully without me being shot this time since I don't fancy a hole in my shoulder to match the one in my chest!" he smiled ruefully.

Ianto gave him a smile and took the tablets.

Jack had found a park and sat on a bench in a daze. He was trying to make sense of what had happened. He had been eating fish and chips with Ianto before being taken away by the rift and deposited on a random estate where he met Ianto as a newborn. He shook his head. Was it a coincidence? He didn't normally believe in coincidences but this was just weird. He decided to make his way to Cardiff and to Torchwood. Maybe he could freeze himself and program the cryo freeze to wake him up on the day he left. Determined he stood before he doubled over as pain shot through his body. He stiffened. This was the same pain he felt as he had fallen through the rift. He saw the light that had taken him surround him. The pain became constant and he could feel his body coming apart. His vision blurred and in a flash he was gone.
