So to those of you who made it to the second chapter… Hi! So I just wanted to give to those who were interested enough to read to this point a thank you! You are amazing and anyone who is willing to provide any ideas they have or thoughts of things they would like I would really like to hear both to improve my own writing and where I might just take this story. Well at the very least I hope you can enjoy yourself and I hope everything is to your liking. If it is at all possible, I would like to know if you prefer longer chapters around 10k words or these quick update chapters. Enjoy!
Ozpin watched as the sun rose over the horizon, during the night he had taken time to reflect on the times to come. Those silver eyes were remarkable, he could feel their touch on his very soul, what could they see he wondered. But it was no matter as he heard the unmistakable pitter patter of a child's footsteps racing along the hardwood floor. Turning his head he watched as the three year old tore around the corner like a bat out of hell and came to a screeching halt as she dug her bare feet into the floor.
"You are up bright and early this morning little rose, how did you sleep?" Ozpin offered with a friendly smile, he reached over and picked up a mug of coffee he had helped himself to from the kitchen. His hands closed around the mug and allowed the warmth to seep into his hands
"I uh I slept pretty good I think! Hungry though!" she said cheerfully with a bright smile.
"Hungry are we? Well how about we fix that, do you have a favorite breakfast?" he asked as he stood up and walked gracefully into the kitchen. Young children were to be spoiled before the harsh realities of the world befell them.
Ruby's jaw dropped, "I can have anything I want? Dad never lets me do that…" her opinion of Ozpin increased tenfold in that moment.
"Yes anything"
Ruby sped around him jumping slightly from excitement, "I want ice cream! Oh oh! And cookies too!" Ozpin smiled at the young lady, "but of course, we will just keep this our little secret hm?" he whispered to her as he reached into the freezer to pull out the sweets she desired.
"Oh I am the best at keeping secrets don't you worry! I haven't told anyone about when Yang snuck out the other night either!" She said proudly not realizing her blunder.
"I for one trust you completely, now here enjoy this." he set a large bowl of ice cream with chunks of cookie spread across the top, Ruby squealed in excitement and quickly dug into her breakfast with gusto. "Ruby I want you to come with me on a trip today if you are interested, all the way to Atlas do you know where that is?" Ruby continued to shovel ice cream into her mouth whilst nodding vigorously.
"When your dad com-" "BRAIN FREEZE!" Ozpin's eyes widened in surprise as the girl yelled, holding her head, groaning in displeasure.
"What's this I hear about a brain freeze?" asked a voice from the doorway, Ozpin turned his head to greet the man. His eyes were red, he had clearly not slept well. "Good morning Ozpin and Ruby, what have I said about ice cream for breakfast?" he said in an empty, but good natured tone.
"Well I am afraid i couldn't finish my breakfast this morning so Ruby here is finishing it for me." Ozpin said with a good natured wink towards ruby who had a spoon hanging out of her mouth as she sat frozen in place, "isn't that right Ruby?"
"Y-yeah! What he said!" she giggled before continuing to devour her ice cream. Tai frowned at him but said no more as he walked up behind his child and messed with her hair. "Daddy! Mr. Ozpin said that we are going to go on a trip today, is that true!?" Ruby asked with her mouth stuffed full, words that could only be understood by a veteran parent.
Tai looked over at Ozpin with a poker face before returning his attention to the young child, "yes, I think you and Ozpin will have a great time."
Ruby paused, "your not coming daddy?"
Tai sighed, "not this time kiddo sorry. I want you to be on extra good behavior for Mr. Ozpin now alright?" she nodded happily, "atta girl. I am going to go check on your older sister and get her out of bed."
Ozpin watched as he walked away, things were going to be different now…
Ruby had had an amazing morning, she had gotten ice cream for breakfast! And cookies too! It was really shaping up for herself. She had said goodbye to her teary eyed father and confused sister a little while ago and was sitting with the old man Ozpin in the back seat of a taxi. She didn't understand why her daddy was upset, she was coming right back, but Ruby knew her dad missed her already.
"Where are we going again Mr. Ozpin?" Ruby asked him as she scrunched her face trying to remember what he had told her. Ozpin merely sipped his coffee while watching her, "I'm taking you to Atlas to meet some new friends." he responded in a monotone voice.
Ruby blinked almost owlishly at him, "isn't it like super cold there? We didn't bring jackets! Oh no! We gotta go back and get some or we are gonna freeze!" Ruby panicked, feeding her own worries in a growing cycle.
Ozpin watched on at the panicking girl and lightly tapped her on the head with his cane, causing her to shake her head. "Don't worry I have warm clothes prepared for you on the ship we are going to take."
She tilted her head slightly to the side and put a finger on her chin, "a ship? Like a boat?"
Ozpin said nothing, only sipping at his coffee, "I mean could you imagine if a boat could fly like a bird! I mean you be all like vroom fwoosh!" Ruby took the time to gracefully act out the fluttering of a bird.
He took his eyes off the sugar powered child in front of him to look off at the sea as they began to approach the airport. The world looked so peaceful on a little island of patch, so far away from the Grimm and dangers of the main continents.
Ozpin looked back at Ruby taken aback as she had snuck up beside him staring at him wide eyed, "Yes ms. Rose?" he asked confused.
"Why is your hair gray?" Ozpin smiled, "Old age i'm afraid."
Ruby looked like she had a bad taste in her mouth, "am I going to get grey hair too?"
"If you are lucky… but you don't need to worry about that for a long long time." She would not understand that for a huntsman or huntress that grey hair was a blessing.
"Oh well that's good! I really like my hair, I don't think it looks very good grey…" Ruby said thoughtfully. "So are we almost there?" she vibrated in her seat with excitement as she latched onto his arm.
"Not quite yet ms Rose." Ozpin replied, shifting his coffee to his other hand.
"Heyyyy! How come you are calling me Ms Rose now? I'm not some adult!" Ruby said with a pout she thought that Mr Ozpin was going to be her friend. "You are supposed to call me Ruby!"
Ozpin shrugged, returning to his old mysterious persona as the bigger world reapplied the pressure that weighed down on his shoulders.
"If you insist Ruby, now we have only 5 more minutes until we arrive alright?" Ruby grumbled and looked out the window pouting, Ozpin pulled his scroll out of his pockets and opened it.
We are at the airport, you can expect us at roughly 5 in the evening.
We will have a car ready for you.
Ozpin closed his scroll and held the handle of his cane and closed his eyes as he tried to ignore the child's continued muttering. "WHAT IS THAT!" Ruby screamed as she pointed out the window at an oncoming airship that was landing on the air strip.
"Well Ruby that might just be what we will be taking to get to Mistral." Ozpin responded kindly.
"Really? We go inside that thing? Woah…" she said in awe.
"Woah indeed ms rose woah indeed."
Ruby was fascinated by the amount of people and all the stores that were inside the island's airport. She had never been around nearly so many people but her curiosity over shadowed her nerves as they walked quickly through security, the guards saluting at Ozpin as they went.
"Why did they do that, Mr Ozpin?" she asked as she looked up curiously.
"The soldiers you mean? They saluted." They slowed to a stop beside a rather expensive looking coffee shop and stepped inside. "But why Mr Ozpin?" she asked before turning the assorted pastries and sweets that were on display. "Can I have one mr ozpin? Can I?" ruby asked, forgetting about the soldiers as she began to jump slightly in excitement.
"Why don't you pick a few and you can take them on our trip." Ruby's eyes lit up with sparkles as she ran up to the counter and rang a little bell. A man in a casual outfit and apron walked out of the kitchen with a towel in his hands that he flipped over his shoulder. Leaning down onto his forearms he started to talk with the hyper rose that was pointing frantically at the desserts practically drooling. Ozpin gestured at his mug and handed it to the man over her head and watched as he grabbed a few pastries with a pair of tongs. Ozpin paid silently as Ruby began to dig into her pasties and it was moments later his scroll rang and he knew that their ride was ready.
"Come rose it's time for our plane ride, do you need anything else?" he asked as he paid for their food and drinks and began to guide her out of the store. Ruby spun around him and waved goodbye to the baker before they continued walking to the airship waiting for them.
It wasn't long before they had walked up into the back of the airship, ruby charging ahead and leading the way as she took in everything her eyes would allow. Ozpin stepped in behind her and took a seat as he watched her running around, the jets of the plane spreading up and beginning to move forward. He sat back to rest his tired eyes from his sleepless nights as he heard ruby knocking on the cabin door, asking hello and talking to the two pilots with curiosity only a child could ever have.
It was finally time to introduce Ruby to her new temporary family.
