...
Bakugo awoke the next morning to his alarm and small hands slapping his cheeks.
"Kacchan! Your alarm went off! Up! Up!"
He groaned and flopped over. Normally he got up relatively easily, but yesterday's emotional nonsense wore him out. He just wanted to stay in his room and rest, maybe play with Deku and stay in bed.
"Kacchan! You have to go to school!"
"Don't wanna."
Midoriya huffed and crossed his arms, pouting before carefully climbing off the bed. He stopped the alarm then went to his pile of clothes and got dressed, struggling with his socks. Once finished, he climbed back onto the bed, slapping Bakugo once again.
"Izuku."
"Kacchan! You have to get up! Second alarm is ringing!"
"Would you just fuck off?!"
And he gave the boy a, he thought, light shove. Apparently he misjudged his strength and sent Midoriya flying off the bed, landing on his butt with a loud thud.
At the sound, Bakugo shot up, gasping when he saw Midoriya on the floor. His green eyes were full of tears and he looked up at Bakugo pitifully before beginning to wail.
"Zuzu!" Bakugo cried, scooping him off the floor and pulling him to his chest, "I'm so sorry! I'm so so sorry! I didn't mean to! Zuzu, I'm sorry!"
His wailing didn't cease as he clung to Bakugo's shirt tightly, his knuckles turning white.
Tears slipped down Bakugo's own cheeks as he rocked Midoriya back and forth, trembling. Uraraka was right. She was right. He was a fucking danger to Midoirya. He shouldn't be the one taking care of him. She should. Todoroki should. Iida should. Anyone but him. Anyone.
"Kacchan?" Midoriya whimpered, "Kacchan, are you mad?"
"What?"
"That I woke you up?"
Bakugo looked at him incredulously for a moment before pressing light kisses to his cheeks.
"No, no, no. I'm mad at me! I hurt you! Oh, Zuzu, I'm so sorry."
"'S okay."
"No!"
Bakugo cradled his head, pressing another kiss to his hair as he let the tears fall.
This was it. He was giving Deku to Uraraka and that was that. Taking care of him any longer was dangerous. He couldn't. He'd hurt him again. Not again.
"Kacchan?"
"Yes?"
"Do you still love me?"
Bakugo's heart hurt as he looked at Midoriya, tear stained and sad. He looked like a kicked puppy, and in a way he was.
"Of course I do. The real question is if you still love me."
"I do!"
"You shouldn't."
He bit his lip as soon as he said the words, scolding himself. This wasn't the time for guilt. This wasn't the time to pour emotions on a literal fucking child.
"Why not, Kacchan?"
"Doesn't matter," He sighed, kissing his forehead and stroking his hair, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine! But Kacchan will be late!"
Bakugo chuckled lightly, damn nerd was on his back no matter what.
"My alarm's early, Zuzu, so I have time."
Midoirya gave a little 'oh!' before climbing off of Bakugo's lap onto the bed, pushing him off to get dressed. He allowed the child to accidentally push him to the ground, laughing it off when he then apologized. It didn't make him feel better about what he'd done, but somehow he felt he deserved it. He got up and got dressed, noticing that Midoirya covered his eyes with his hands. He'd done that when they were little and had sleepovers, never wanting to intrude on his friend. Bakugo didn't care but it was endearing.
It'd be good for when Uraraka took care of him.
"Hey, Zuzu," Bakugo started hesitantly, "You remember Uraraka? The girl with brown hair?"
"The one who yelled at you?"
"Her. What do you think of her?"
"She yelled at you. She made you sad."
Bakugo sighed, running a hand through his hair before grabbing all of Midoriya's clothes and tossing them in a tote bag he had.
"It's okay. She's our friend. Well...She's your friend. You like her. A lot."
His mouth felt dry at what he implied, that he liked her. He liked her the way Bakugo liked him. Wait. Fuck. When did he realize that? Shit. Why's his chest hurting?
"I do?"
"Yeah. She...She's your best friend."
Midoriya giggled at that, jumping off the bed to grab Bakugo's hand.
"That's not true! Kacchan is my best friend!"
His throat was closing up as he looked at Midoriya. He wanted to confirm what the boy said, but it wasn't true. Deku was his best friend, but he wasn't even close to Deku's best friend.
"No...No when you grow up you get better friends," His smile didn't quite reach his eyes as he pat Midoriya's hair, "I'm a very bad friend."
"No! Kacchan!"
"Shh."
He picked him up gently and pressed a kiss to his cheek, hoping to hide his inner turmoil.
"Uraraka is gonna take care of you from now on," He whispered, "She'll take better care of you."
"What?"
Bakugo didn't reply as he picked up the tote and walked out of the room, ignoring the pit in his stomach and the little voice begging for answers. He knocked on Uraraka's door, hearing her shuffle around before opening the door. She jolted in surprise, guilt filling her eyes immediately.
"Bakugo, I'm so sorry I yelled at you last night! That was really rude and harsh and I never should have done it!"
"It's fine. You were right."
Her brows furrowed in confusion as he handed her the bag, eyes growing wide when she saw the contents.
"I'm a shitty ass caretaker. Here."
Midoirya was passed to Uraraka and before anyone could say a word, Bakugo was gone.
...
"Kacchan?"
Uraraka's heart broke at Midoriya's small voice, hurt and confused. Tears were pooling in his eyes as he watched Bakugo leave the hallway.
"Kacchan!"
The blonde flinched but kept walking, in fact going faster.
Then he started crying, sobs wracking his little body. Uraraka didn't know what to do! Bakugo just passed her a child! Maybe she should have thought her argument last night through...
No matter! She got what she wanted, and they all knew it was best for Midoriya. Except for Midoriya, that is. He was clinging to her shirt, crying loudly.
"Take me back to Kacchan! I want Kacchan!"
"Shhh...Shhh..."
She took him into the room, shutting the door behind them and plopping onto the bed. His wails hadn't ceased, if anything he was getting louder.
"Kacchan doesn't love me anymore! I woke him up and he doesn't love me anymore!"
Wait.
Had Bakugo brought him over because Deku woke him up?! That was bull! How could he?! She knew he wasn't suitable for taking care of him, but he didn't think he was this bad. Anyway, she had to soothe the boy in her arms now.
"Don't cry, Deku!"
His sobbing stopped briefly as he looked at her in confusion.
"Who's Deku?"
Oh crap.
"I-I meant Izuku!"
Aaand he was crying again.
"He's leaving like daddy! I messed up and he doesn't love me anymore! Like daddy!"
Well, shoot, this was way more than Uraraka was prepared for. How could she know he already had trauma at such a young age?! Crap, crap, crap.
"Bakugo's not leaving you! I'm just taking care of you for a little while!"
The rest of the week...
"Really?"
He looked up at her hopefully, as if wanting to believe her but unsure.
"Yeah! I bet he's in the kitchen making food as we speak! You wanna go down?"
"Yes!"
"Let's get you changed first!"
Midoirya bounced in place excitedly, thrilled to see Bakugo again. As Uraraka slipped the clothes off and on, she couldn't help but wonder how long it'd be until he stopped believing her.
...
Bakugo stumbled into the kitchen, drained from dropping Deku off. He just wanted to be alone, but just his luck, someone was already there. The person stood up from behind the refrigerator door and Bakugo sighed in relief when it was just Momo.
"Good morning, Bakugo!" She smiled, offering a small wave.
"Mornin'."
Her gaze lowered to next to his legs and she looked at him questioningly. She didn't even have to ask before Bakugo slumped his shoulders, pulling out some bread and pans.
"I left him with Cheeks."
"What?!"
Momo gasped lightly, watching the way his eyebrows furrowed sadly.
"I...It's better for him."
"How so?!"
"I'm a shitty person, ponytail, an even shittier caretaker."
"Bakugo! Did you consider little Midoriya's feelings about being dumped with her?!"
"Course I did," He grumbled, gesturing to the eggs in the fridge which she handed him promptly, "He'll be fine."
They stood in silence as Bakugo began to cook and Momo made some tea.
"Why Uraraka?" She finally asked, getting out two mugs instead of one.
"She's the one who opened my fucking eyes."
"How so?"
"Last night...after the movie she, Glasses, and IcyHot kinda cornered me. Cheeks yelled at me a little," He paused to let out a little chuckle, "Deku heard and got mad at her. She just said that I shouldn't be taking care of Deku. She was right."
Momo laid a gentle hand on his shoulder, pleased when his whole body relaxed at the touch. She knew he didn't like physical contact, it was an exclusive privilege, so she was pretty excited to see she was granted the contact.
"Bakugo. Midoriya loves you, so much. You're the only person he remembers, the only one he has a connection with. He trusts you."
"He shouldn't."
"Why not? What does he know of you right now?"
"I'm shit."
"No. Midoriya knows that you're his best friend. He knows that you've carried him when he's asked. You've taken care of him. You've been absurdly affectionate. And most of all," She paused, making Bakugo look her in the eyes, "He knows you love him."
The blonde blushed lightly before returning his attention to the pan, watching the eggs sizzle.
Momo sighed and poured two cups of tea before sitting at the table and placing one in front of the chair next to her. In a few minutes, Bakugo joined her, two plates in hand. He placed a dish in front of her and sat with her, quietly thanking her for the beverage.
"I pushed him out of the bed today," he mumbled.
"Why?"
"Kept slapping me and I fucking shoved him too hard. I didn't mean to. Just meant to get him to stop."
"Then what? What'd you do then?"
"Picked him up while he cried. Soothed him. Made sure he was okay."
"And what part of that is wrong?"
"The part where I fucking pushed him."
"You're just ignoring the parts that were right."
Bakugo paused mid sip, looking at her in surprise. He'd never thought like that before, for anything, ever. He worked in absolutes, never considering a different option.
"I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I am gonna tell you what I think. I think little Midoriya feels safe in your hands. Everyone makes mistakes. Uraraka may make him float by mistake. Todoroki could drop him. Iida could kick him by accident. Everyone's a danger when a kid is around."
"Hadn't thought of that."
"Of course not. So give yourself another chance. I know you have his best interest at heart."
"I haven't always."
He was curling in on himself, covering his face with his hands. Momo was no Bakugo expert, but she knew he was nearing his emotional max. Hesitantly, she rubbed his back, feeling the tense muscles and hoping to soothe him.
"But look at you now. When I first met you, I admittedly didn't like you, but now? I quite like you, Bakugo!"
Bakugo smiled weakly, taking a sip of his tea.
"I…don't think you're as annoying as everyone else."
"Why thank you. What an honor."
He chuckled at that, looking up to meet her eyes. They were so kind.
"I needed this."
"You're welcome, Bakugo. You're gonna take good care of our little Midoriya."
They sat in a comfortable silence, finishing their breakfasts. That is, until they heard the rapid pattering of little feet.
"Kacchan!"
…
Bakugo jumped up, spinning to see Midoriya running towards him as fast as his little legs could carry him. Uraraka was trailing behind, eyebrows furrowed in thought.
He crouched down and opened his arms to catch Midoriya, who only lit up more at the gesture. The boy jumped into his arms and giggled when Bakugo spun him around and pressed light kisses to his face.
"Kacchan! That tickles!" He whined, pushing his face away.
"Don't be a brat!"
"Wah! Kacchan!"
Bakugo pressed one last kiss to his nose before simply holding him, smiling. Uraraka just stood at the doorway, watching the scene unfold. Momo watched as well, happy to see them together again. It was weird to see Bakugo so soft and loving, especially towards Midoriya, but it was clearly sincere.
"Do you...still love me?"
Sitting back down and setting Midoriya on the table, Bakugo pinched his cheeks.
"Yeah. Of course."
Little legs kicked happily as Midoriya giggled, squishing Bakugo's face in return. Uraraka then walked over, ruffling Midoirya's hair before addressing Momo.
"Do you think you could make him a school uniform?"
"Of course!"
"Thank you, Momo!"
Uraraka smiled before grabbing Bakugo by the wrist and pulling him up and into the living room.
"What the fuck, Cheeks?"
"You brought Deku to me cause he woke you up?!"
"No?! Where'd you get that shit idea?!"
She crossed her arms, huffing at his curses.
"Deku told me!"
Bakugo stiffened before rubbing his face tiredly. Of course Deku thought that. He was just a kid. He was just trying to connect the dots.
"That's not why."
"Then what?"
"Tch. I pushed him off the fucking bed."
"What?!"
Uraraka gasped, brows furrowing in anger. This was worse than she thought! At least he had the conscious to realize he was wrong, she supposed. At least now Deku would be safe with her, apparently her suspicions of Bakugo were correct. Although...she'd kind of hoped she was wrong.
"It was an accident! I didn't fucking mean to!"
"But you did it!"
He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. Momo had just brought him peace of mind, damn it.
"Look, Cheeks, that's why I brought him to you. But now...I want him back."
"No."
"What?!"
"You had the brains to hand him over, so I'm keeping him."
Bakugo bristled, shoulders tensing as he reminded himself he couldn't hit her. Fucking hell. Why was she so goddamn stubborn? No wonder she and Deku liked each other.
Shit, that hurt.
"We're not fucking parents fighting for custody!"
"Feels like it."
Growling, Bakugo walked back to the kitchen, leaving Uraraka huffing in the living room. He relaxed when Midoriya ran up to him, dressed in a mini school uniform.
"He's all ready for school!" Momo smiled, picking him up, "He's so cute!"
"Heh. You're gonna spoil the brat."
"Kacchan!"
He chuckled and took him from Momo, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
"You want some breakfast?"
"Cereal!"
"Fine fine."
Momo quickly made a booster seat for a chair and Midoriya was promptly plopped into it. Bakugo remembered that Deku always liked sugary shit in the morning since they were kids. He didn't approve but he guessed one day wouldn't hurt.
After cleaning up, he picked Midoriya up so they could run to his room to grab his bag. As he left the kitchen he felt Uraraka's eyes glaring holes into his back.
Barely through the goddamn morning and everything had already gone to shit.
…
Midoriya was easy to keep entertained, just a coloring book and some crayons were needed. He sat in Bakugo's lap, having refused to go with anyone else. The blonde struggled with his notes a bit, but it was better than Deku crying, he supposed.
Class went off without a hitch and Bakugo had never been more proud of the nerd. When it was finally lunch he scooped him up and walked out of the room, his loud friends in tow.
"Do we get to have lunch with baby Midoriya!?"
"Tch. Yeah, I guess."
There was a lot of cheering behind him as they gathered their lunch and sat at their tables. He'd grabbed Midoriya some katsudon, he didn't really know what else to get him. Once he cut the meat into small bites, he let the boy sit on his lap and munch quietly.
"Sooo… little Midoirya, can I call you little Izuku?" Mina asked, brimming with excitement.
"Sure! Kacchan calls me Zuzu!"
There was a round of soft gasps and Bakugo rolled his eyes. He already knew what was coming.
"You call him Zuzu?! Why didn't you tell us?!" Kirishima cried, putting down his glass in frustration.
"Wait…" Kaminari paused, "I thought you called him De-"
"Shut your fucking mouth."
"Oh. Oop."
Bakugo took the moment of silence to slurp his ramen, it was spicy as hell, just how he liked it. They continued to chatter, asking Midoriya questions and telling him stories of the future. It wasn't until he softly tugged on Bakugo's sleeve that anything happened.
"I wanna try Kacchan's food!"
"No."
"Why not?!"
"Spicy."
"I can have spicy!"
Midoriya offered the biggest puppy eyes he could manage, and Bakugo was painfully tempted to cave, but remained firm.
"Nope."
"Kacchan!"
Bakugo glanced at his friends for help, but they offered no support. Suddenly, they could not see.
"No fuckin' noodles! I'm serious!"
"But Kacchan! I want some! You had spicy noodles when you were little!"
"My tongue is stronger than yours!"
"I'm gonna tell Auntie you stole candy from the jar!"
What the everloving fuck.
He distinctly remembered when he'd stolen candy from the candy jar, Midoriya trying to stop him every time. This little shit was trying to blackmail him!
If he gave Midoriya the noodles, he would cry. If he didn't give him the noodles, he'd cry and be angry.
This was quite the lose lose situation.
He finally sighed, resting his head in his hand before getting up to snag a spoon. Upon returning, he cut some noodles and picked them up with just a taste of the broth.
"One taste, you little brat."
"Yay!"
His friends watched in suspense as he spooned the food into Midoriya's mouth, knowing it was one of the top ten worst decisions of his life.
As soon as he tasted it, Midoriya yelped in surprise. Not one to back down, he swallowed it quickly.
"Spicy! Spicy!"
"I fucking told you!"
Bakugo handed him his glass of water before snatching one of Kaminari's melonpan.
"Asshole!" He cried, trying to take it back.
"Don't curse in front of the fucking kid."
The rest of them giggled as Kaminari slumped in defeat.
Midoriya's cheeks were bright red as tears spilled down them.
"Little brat, I told you not to."
"Sorry, Kacchan! Do you still love me?!"
Smiling gently, Bakugo kissed his flushed face.
"Course I do. Now eat this, it'll soothe your mouth."
And it did, after just a few bites Midoriya's tongue didn't burn as much. He smiled sweetly as Bakugo, then at Kaminari, thanking him for the melonpan. Kaminari melted, saying it was nothing as the other friends cooed.
Soon, everything was back to how it was. Midoriya drowned in affection as he was passed around the group. Once lunch was over, Bakugo scooped him up to take him to back to class.
But he didn't notice the careful eyes watching him from the other table.
…
Well today had been a long ass day.
Arriving to his dorm room, Bakugo dropped Midoriya on the bed before flopping down face first himself.
"Kacchan? Are we gonna sleep?"
"I've got homework, but you can sleep."
A small yawn was his only answer before he curled up on the bed, passing out almost immediately. Lightly kissing his hair, Bakugo chuckled, getting up to change.
He was tempted to change him out of the school uniform, but Uraraka still had his clothes. Maybe he should go ask for them back...ah shit someone's knocking.
"Bakugo! Open up!"
"Shut the fuck up!"
He opened it quickly, growling. Uraraka was there, huffing and crossing her arms. He stood in a similar stance, trying to make it even. Her cheeks were puffed out as she glared at him.
"Give me Deku!" She hissed, "Why would you take him from me?!"
"I took him this fucking morning and you're asking for him back, now?!"
"Yes!"
"Petty!"
"Screw you!"
They stopped arguing at the sound of a thud on the floor. Quickly, they looked to the source, gasping when they saw little Midoriya sprawled on the floor. He was wrapped up in the blanket, eyes barely opening.
Bakugo ran to him, scooping him up and pulling him close.
"Are you okay?!"
"Yeah? I fall off the bed a lot. Kacchan knows that."
For All Might's fucking sake.
He did fucking know that.
Midoriya fell off the bed when they were little, no matter how bundled up he was or tucked in with pillows. They'd have sleepovers that resulted in Midoriya landing on the hard floor.
The only reason the memory was faint in his mind was because after the first couple of times, Bakugo was determined to put a stop to it. When Midoriya came over for a sleepover one week, he was met with a large fort made up of the softest pillows and blankets Bakugo could grab. It was a little lopsided, but when isn't a pillow fort? Bakugo has even grabbed some of his glow in the dark stars to stick on the "walls" and had his dad put up battery charged fairy lights.
He remembered that Midoriya had been awe struck, so touched by the gesture that he cried. At the same time, he always cried.
After that, they always slept in a pillow fort on the floor, so Midoriya never fell off the bed again. Of course, being wrapped up in Bakugo's arms also kept him from moving.
At the memory, Bakugo felt less like a piece of shit. It didn't justify his actions, but it was almost reassuring that little Midoriya was used to it.
"Why didn't you put pillows around him?!"
Uraraka's voice drew him out of his thoughts, but he remained unphased.
"I forgot he used to fall off the bed, I took care of it as a kid and it stopped happening."
"Kacchan," Midoriya whined, nuzzling into his shoulder, "I wanna nap."
Bakugo gently set him on the bed, tucking pillows around him to prevent him from falling, at least temporarily. He pressed a light kiss to his forehead, running his fingers through his hair before turning around.
Quietly, he led Uraraka out of the room, closing the door nearly all the way. They stared at each other for a few seconds before Uraraka sighed.
"You have one more chance, Bakugo. I know you didn't mean to push him off the bed, and he didn't get hurt. I know you care but…"
"I'm a piece of shit."
"Well I wanted to say it nicely."
"Nah, be honest with me. I'm painfully self aware."
Uraraka smiled, gently patting his shoulder.
"I'll bring his stuff."
…
The rest of the day went on peacefully, no more antics or accidents. Little Midoriya was spoiled beyond words, but soon enough it was time for bed.
Uraraka gave Midoriya a smooch on the cheek before handing him to Bakugo, the small boy still bitter but offering her a small smile in return. Everyone gave him a wave and his chubby little hand returned it as they walked to the elevator.
"Kacchan?"
"Hm?"
"A-Are you gonna keep me now? You won't give me to Rara or Sharki or Kami?"
Bakugo chuckled at the names Midoriya had given his friends, but kissed his cheek gently as a response.
"You're mine now," He grinned, "They can pry you from my cold dead hands."
"Don't die!" He cried, squishing Bakugo's face, "I'll miss you!"
"Not gonna die, dumbass. Exactly why you're stuck with me."
Midoriya giggled as they walked into the dorm room, Bakugo plopping him onto the bed unceremoniously.
They promptly changed into their pajamas and Midoriya was lying down on the bed before Bakugo ripped the blanket off of him.
"Kacchan!"
"C'mere, nerd."
Midoriya scrambled off the bed, Bakugo slowly pulling a box out from under it. Inside were a ton of blankets and pillows that his parents insisted he pack, in case he blew his shit up.
"No more falling off the bed for you!"
The boy gasped and clapped excitedly, helping Bakugo pull out their materials. In no time at all, there was a quaint little fort, just big enough for the two of them.
With a yawn, Midoriya took Bakugo's hand and pulled him in, making tired grabby hands. Bakugo shuffled momentarily before lying down on his back and pulling Midoriya on top of him.
"Goodnight, Kacchan."
""Night, Zuzu."
As Bakugo watched Midoriya drift off to sleep, his hand gently stroking his hair, he felt at peace. Maybe he'd fucked up, but he was preventing it from happening again. Maybe he was a shitty person, but he could be good enough for a few days.
Yeah.
He was gonna take good care of little Deku.
...
Two chapters DOWN
I chose to make the event that triggered bakugo to giving midoriya up small on purpose tbh cause he overreacts to everything tbh
Anyway I hope this was okay! It was getting a little long sorry about the shitty ending
please review and have a great day!
