Notes:

I decided to post another chapter today just to really get the story going. Hope you all enjoy!

Ughhh! I don't want to get up and deal with today. Arizona thought as she rolled around in bed. She couldn't bring herself to actually get out of bed though. Just keep thinking about Leo. It's the first day of the rest of his life. The first surgery of many, but the first step nonetheless. At that thought, Arizona was able to finally get out of bed and get ready for her day.

At the hospital, Arizona noticed that a few new residents were on her service today. They must all be working with Callie. Before going into the Pediatrics unit Arizona stopped Callie and her residents.

"Hi everyone! I am so glad you all are here to help give Leo his legs! I've been with this beautiful boy since the beginning, and I am so happy that we are going to be able to do this now. Before we go in, I know that it's the first time on Peds for a lot of you. This is not general surgery in miniature. These are the tiny humans. These are children. They believe in magic; they play pretend there is fairy dust in their IV bags. They hope, and they cross their fingers, and they make wishes, and that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse. They believe. In peds, we have miracles and magic. In peds, anything is possible." As Arizona finishes talking, she sees Callie roll her eyes.

Why the hell is she like this? There is more to surgery than just medicine, and she needs to learn about it. Maybe I can use this time to not only help Leo but to also help Callie learn more about compassion with her patients.

Arizona walked all the doctors into Leo's room and was glad to see that Jo was already there for her morning pre-rounds. Arizona had specifically requested Jo on this case so that she can at least have an ally if Callie's anger got too intense.

Arizona stood back and allowed Callie to do her examinations and talk to the patient and his parents. For some reason, Arizona was unable to take her eyes off Dr. Torres. There was this look in her eyes that was so sincere. It was almost as if Callie really cared about the patient. She was calm and very professional with the family. She made sure to answer all their questions and make sure that they were prepared. Even though she didn't connect to the patients the same way Arizona would, she could tell that Callie did really care about the patient, which was a new development about Dr. Torres. Arizona couldn't stop staring at Callie until she was caught by the brown-eyed doctor. She quickly looked away but she didn't miss the fact that even though her face looked annoyed, her eyes didn't quite have the same bite to them as they usually do.

After the examination as all the doctors were walking Arizona stopped Callie for a second.

"Thank you again for working on this case with me Dr. Torres," Arizona said with her trademark dimpled smile, "Leo is a really great kid and his parents are so strong and amazing. They mean a lot to me, and I am glad we have one of the best Orthopedic surgeons working on this with us." Arizona decided to be kind and caring towards Callie and hopefully, this would all go very smoothly and easily.

Callie's expression was unreadable as she said, "I'm glad I'm able to help. It is my job after all." She had a slight grin on her face.

Callie smiling in my presence. That's new.

"Well thank you anyway! I'll see you in the OR in a few hours" Arizona said and wheeled away with her wheely sneaks.

Ughh really? She still wears those stupid roller shoes? I was finally starting to like her a little bit.

Something about Arizona's speech about pediatrics really hit a chord in Callie's heart. She didn't know if it was because of what she said or because of the joy and passion written all over her face as she said it, but either way, it made her feel like these next few months won't be as bad as she thought they would. Well… she thought that up until Arizona wheeled away in the middle of a freaking hospital, but Callie decided to try and forget about that part as she thought back to the smile on Arizona's face when she was interacting with the patient.

"What's got you all smiley," Mark asked while handing Callie a cup of coffee. Callie was slightly startled to see Mark. She was so caught up in her own thoughts.

"You scared me," Callie said while lightly slapping his arm then grabbing the coffee and taking a sip. She closed her eyes savoring the hot liquid going down her throat. "Yes! Thank you, Mark! I really needed some coffee."

"You didn't answer my question about what has you all smiley and jumpy, although I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with a cute blonde pediatric surgeon," Mark said with a smug look on his face.

Callie almost spit out her coffee. "Why would Dr. Robbins be making me smile? I'm just really excited about Leo's case. A case as severe as his almost never comes around!"

"Sure," Mark said with his trademark grin plastered on his face.

"Ugh, whatever Mark. I don't know why you think we would be good friends anyway. We have nothing in common. I'm also still not sure she's even a good surgeon. That still remains to be seen."

"I never said friends," Mark said while wiggling his eyebrows. "And she is an amazing surgeon. One of the best I've ever seen actually."

Callie just scoffed in return. I wonder what Mark meant by saying that. With Mark, it's better not to ask what goes on in that brain of his.

Hours later Callie just stood in the scrub room in shock. She hadn't been able to move for the past 5 minutes.

What the hell just happened in there? How did she do that? We almost lost him. Finally, after a few more minutes of silent contemplating Callie scrubbed out and went to find Mark at Joe's. He promised to buy her a drink after the surgery, and she was definitely going to take him up on that after what just happened.

"Are you okay?" Mark asked with actual sincerity when he saw Callie sit down across from him.

"Yeah. No. I don't know."

"What happened? How did the surgery go?"

"I don't even freaking know," Callie said, still somewhat in a daze. "One second I'm working on his legs and the next second he goes into v-fib. There was nothing indicating why, and I didn't know what the hell to do. Arizona immediately jumped into action. She quickly figured out that he had thrown a clot and cracked his chest. I honestly was so confused and scared that I had done something, that I didn't move. I didn't know what was happening. Arizona just took command and saved that kid's life. If she hadn't figured out what had happened and dealt with it as quickly as she did, he would be dead. I don't even know how she knew what was happening. It is so rare for a complication like that, and when it happens it usually is a death sentence. I was so scared, Mark. I hate working on little kids! It's just so much scarier when something goes wrong."

Mark just smiled. "I told you Robbins was good. And yeah kids are hard, but they're resilient. Didn't Robbins give you all her peds speech? It's one of my favorite things about bringing new residence into peds."

Callie actually smiled and her heartbeat slowed down a bit when Mark mentioned Arizona's speech. It really is a good one. "Yeah, she did. You're right. It's just hard to see a kid crashing on the table and not knowing why it's happening."

"I know, but he's gonna be okay and you and Robbins are going to fix him up!"

Callie found herself smiling again at the thought of working with Robbins. What the hell has gotten into you, Torres? You don't like cheery. You don't need a cheery friend? And what the hell did Mark mean when he said that he didn't say we'd be good friends. Whatever, tonight I'm drinking and forgetting all about this insane day.
