Zelda was curious to learn what Link wanted to show her. After they finished their battles with the other SSBU fighters, she went to meet with the Hero of merging and diverging timelines.
"Link?" She called out into the vast landscape. "I'm here!"
Suddenly the stage was plunged into darkness. Squinting into the darkness, Zelda noticed a platform illuminated by a circle of wooden torches. Two blue eyes emerged from the darkness. The pink, white and gold clad Zelda ran over to hug her friend from another timeline.
"Thank goodness! It's you. I was scared that-" She was cut short by the blue clad Champion pushing her down onto what resembled a leaf of lettuce and slices of juicy tomatoes stacked atop a giant slice of rye bread. Nothing about this made any sense. It smelt nice though. Had she eaten at all today? Link was a good cook, as she heard from the previous Zelda's, but she had no idea it was in this context. She thought they meant that tiny cooking pot he used to heal.
"Link?! Unhand me. What are you doing?" Zelda exclaimed. "Link! What is this? I don't want to do this anymore! Link? Please let me go." She kicked her legs, stranded on her stomach with her hands tied behind her back.
Link laid a finger over his mouth in a gesture for her to be quiet while he struggled to drag over something large and milky. It was hard to see in the dim light. Was this a joke? This seemed out of character. What was going on? Was this Link a hungry Bokogoblin in disguise? Had this link been beaten down by the other SSBU fighters one too many times? What was he planning?
The mayonnaise he added using a giant spoon the size of one of his other weapons, dripped down the slice of cheese. The mayonnaise soaking her skin, clothes and hair. While she grimaced at the weirdness of this situation, Link lifted up a slice of bread with his inhuman strength. Completing the Zelda sandwich. He climbed up onto the top of it, triumphantly.
"Get off me doofus! And stop laughing." She pouted, mayonnaise squelching between her toes as she struggled. "You tricked me!"
She could see why Link, regardless of his timeline, was so charming to the other Zeldas. Why they resurrected so much, but never seemed to run out of things to say. They were bonded by friendship. Even his laugh was like a ray of sunshine after the rain. She wished she could read his thoughts to know what went on in the mind of someone who died defending Hyrule 100 years ago.
This Link always seemed jovial and light hearted despite his muteness. Here she was - much to her dismay- sandwiched between two slices of bread, cheese, a condiment, lettuce and tomato. Zelda huffed, blowing strands of her long golden hair out of her face.
"Oh haha! You've had your fun. Now let me out. What did you really want to show me?"
