Hello, everyone. Thank you for those that left comments on my work. I have read them all and will try to integrate all your feedbacks to better improve my work.
Excuse me if this released chapter is a bit rough. I know I can improve upon the grammar, syntax and etc, but by the time I do that I might release this chapter up to a week late. Since so many people have been asking me if this story was a oneshot, or if I had finished the next chapter, I decided to release it.
Here is the first chapter of Gate Thus the Divine Spirits Fought There.
Chapter One "Calm before the Storm"
"Shirou, are you alright!" Rin Tohsaka shouted as she watched her husband, Shirou Emiya, screaming and convulsing on the ground while Unlimited Blade Works did something it had never done before, which was to change.
"I'm okay!" Shirou shouted as he watched his wife rush to her side. "Just give me a couple of moments."
She ignored her husband's words. Rin knew that he was trying to hide his injuries so that she wouldn't be worried. Her hands roamed over Shirou's body to find no injuries. Rin turned her attention inside as she used magic. She sighed in relief when she discovered no internal injuries to her husband's body or his soul.
"Shirou, how do you feel?" Rin asked as she scrutinized her husband. When Shirou didn't respond Rin became concerned. "Shirou! Can you-"
"My, my… What a lovely wife my descendant has." A voice that was Shirou's but also wasn't Rin's husband spoke as Shirou's body sat up.
"Who are you?!" Rin shouted in alarm as she jumped away from Shirou and prepared for a fight. Soon a thought that scared Rin came to mind that might explain the baffling situation before her. "How dare you possess my husband's body!"
"Excuse me, young lady. I didn't intend to possess your husband's body. If you are concerned for your husband, he is still here." Shirou pointed to himself. "My name is Senji Muramasa."
"Senji Muramasa," Rin repeated incredulously as it was hard to believe that her husband even had the potential of being a candidate for such a well-known Japanese Heroic Spirit to possess his body.
"Yes, that is correct." 'Senji Muramasa' nodded. "Your husband has reached the level that few blacksmiths can hope to achieve and that is to completely understand every aspect of a weapon and being able to replicate them nearly flawlessly. This achievement alone, alongside the fact that he is my descendant and possesses a similar body/mind allows him to be a perfect candidate for me."
"Let me see," Said Rin as she walked up to Muramasa. She was surprised that Muramasa showed no signs that he was troubled by Rin walking up to him. He didn't even batter an eye when Rin placed her hands on his chest. "Here it goes."
At first, the inspection pleased Rin. Her husband's potential had been greatly harmed due a variety of factors from Kiritsugu's improper teaching of magecraft, Shirou's reckless use of turning a nerve into a temporary Magic Circuit and coming to use his Magic Circuits at such a late age that they had atrophied. Not only had her husband's Magic Circuits been properly healed as if they had never been damaged but had surpassed what Shirou should have been able achieve if he had unearthed his Magic Circuits true potential. Rin counted several more Magic Circuits that hadn't been there and were close in both quality and number to her own Magic Circuits.
She frowned as she discovered an abnormality, but Rin started to become concerned as the number of abnormalities began to pile up until they built up to form a very alarming issue. Her husband's body and soul had become so intertwined woven with the foreign soul claiming to be 'Senji Muramasa' that she had very little chance of separating the two if she was to try.
"I need the help of a specialist of the soul." Rin sighed as she reached for the phone in her pocket.
"There is no need," Said a voice as he grabbed Rin's hand before it could slip into her pockets. "I am fine, Rin."
Rin was surprised by not the person that grabbed her hand. It was the voice and vibe she felt. Senji Muramasa seemed to have disappeared and Rin had the feeling that she was talking to her husband. She quickly shook her head when she realized that might not be true. It might be Senji Muramasa pretending to be her husband.
"Rin look at me and use your feelings? Do I look like it is not me, Shirou Emiya, speaking to my lovely wife?" Shirou continued in a gentle tone.
She hesitated but came to a decision. "I do believe it's you right now." Rin paused for a moment. "What is it like having another soul in your body? I have read about those who had similar experiences and want to compare them to your own."
"The best way I could describe it would be like sharing an apartment with another person. I can completely ignore the other roommate or decide to interact with each other. In fact, I could do anything I want as I am the owner and stop my roommate from doing anything I don't want if I so choose too." Shirou replied with a smile.
Rin was surprised by her husband's answer. Normally, a powerful spiritual entity such as a Heroic Spirit would crush the soul of their host before taking possession of their new body. She was shocked that wasn't the case for her husband, which shouldn't be possible. It was akin to the USA deciding to invade a third world country and allow it to control the military and economy of the USA. No sane Heroic Spirit would allow its power to be used by someone without anything in return, or at least that was what Rin thought.
"Maybe if another Heroic Spirit had been in my place, they might demand something in return or outright take over your husband's body." Said Muramasa as he temporarily took control over Shirou's body. "I would never do such a thing to my descendant. Just observing from within your husband's body about the current world is quite the pleasure."
"My ancestor doesn't ask for much and has been telling nothing but the truth so far, Rin." Shirou added as he took control once more.
"I am fine as long as you are okay with what is going on," Said Rin to her husband as she reached for her phone. She dialed a contact and waited for a while before she heard the click to announce someone picked up. "Professor Velvet, are you free right now?"
"If this isn't very important then I am going to hang up." A very agitated and furious Waver Velvet replied over the phone.
"Professor, what has gotten you all worked up?" Rin couldn't help but ask curiously.
"The entire world has gone to shit! You take your pick. Portals to the Reverse Side of the World opening up. Phantasmal beasts returned in mass numbers and attacking humans without discrimination. Entire towns and cities being destroyed. Gods that were thought to be long dead, appearing out of nowhere and causing global havoc." A clearly overworked Waver shouted angrily.
Rin's eyes widened in disbelief. "Those are disturbing signs. Is the Age of Gods returning?" She asked incredulously.
Any further words stopped and Rin felt a sudden loss of control over her body. The last thing she remembered was helplessly falling onto the ground as her vision started to fade while Shirou's voice echoed in the background.
Rin was surprised when instead of regaining consciousness and finding an unknown amount of time passing that she found herself in her own mental world. Normally entering her mental world happened when she purposely entered in such as when she meditated. For her to enter the mental world without warning greatly puzzled Rin. It was as if her mental world had triggered her sudden black-out.
"Hey! You, there! Why don't you tell her to buzz off!?" A voice called at Rin.
"Why don't you buzz off instead!?" Another voice snapped.
"I was the first here. It is first come, first served!"
"That might have been the case if it was a thing or place, but this is clearly a host of our choosing. She is the one that gets to decide!"
"Is that so?!"
"That is right!"
The two owners of the voices that had spoken started to engage in a verbal argument that greatly confused and amused Rin. At first if someone was to listen it would seem that the two speakers were having a serious verbal argument, but Rin got the feeling that it was two siblings that were arguing with each other. They might hate each other at the moment, but later they would either make up or pretend the argument never happened in the first place to preserve their familial relationship.
Rin didn't know why the two arguing figures looked like her, but they had near identical appearance save for hair and eye colors, and similar styled attires. This made it so that they appeared to be twin sisters, which further enhanced Rin's belief that they were siblings after all.
"Who are you two, and what are you doing in my mental world?" Rin asked seriously as the appearance of two foreign entities in someone's mental world wasn't often a good thing.
"I am Ishtar, the Mesopotamian/Sumerian/Babylonian Goddess of beauty, good harvests, war, lust, discord and fertility. You should be honored that I chose you as my vessel!" The self-proclaimed goddess said in a dramatic tone as she flicked her hair aside.
"My name is Ereshkigal, a goddess from the same mythology as the one beside me. My divine domains include the Sumerian Underworld." The other self-proclaimed goddess introduced herself in a more polite and welcoming tone.
If it had been any other time, Rin would have doubted that she was actually dealing with two goddesses. It was only after hearing the reason for her professor's agitation did she even consider the remote possibility that she was actually dealing with two Divine Spirits. She took a deep breath to seriously consider the possibility that she was indeed dealing with two possible goddesses.
The first sign was power. Rin was outclassed in strength. The difference in strength was so great that the two 'goddesses' possessed the raw power to have they could easily have destroyed her without Rin even being aware of it or having time to respond, if they had desired to do so.
Another sign was the energy that they radiated. It was something that she had never felt before but had read records about. The energy was very familiar to the divine energy given off by Divine Spirits according to records.
How the two 'goddesses' behaved was something that Rin recognized was normally associated with the gods. They treated humans like ants, beneath their notice given how much more powerful they were, and the only reason Rin was being treated differently was because she had likely caught their attention for reasons unknown to her.
"What can a humble human such as I do for you? There are many more superior and interesting humans than me." Rin asked in a very polite and humble tone, trying to reduce her value to the goddesses' eyes so that they might choose to bother someone else instead.
"Hmphm," Ishtar huffed in disdain. "The war over who is in control of Earth has just started, but I have decided to have a backup plan in case humanity wins. I chose you as a possible vessel if the gods and Phantasmal Species lost the war to reclaim dominion over Earth."
"My reasons are similar to my sister's," Said Ereshkigal. "Although, I am different from my sister, who will demand complete control over your body." She glanced over at her Ishtar. "What I wish for is peaceful co-existence. I am open to negotiations. You may make your demands and I assure you that I will do my best to come to a deal that best suits both sides."
Rin became extremely tempted by Ereshkigal's words. Making deals with such a powerful entity such as gods might be extremely dangerous, given how fickle gods were in their emotions and intentions, but she knew enough history regarding deals between mortals and gods that Rin was willing to risk her life. There was just too much that gods offered that was otherwise impossible to mages like herself.
Yet, Rin didn't let herself become blinded by greed as she knew she needed to know more before thinking about negotiating.
"Even if humanity won, it is not like you will die. Your unique existence as Divine Spirits prevent what would be considered as death by us mortals. You can be brought back to life if True Ether is abundant enough to reform your bodies and souls. Why choose me as a vessel, anyway?" Rin asked in confusion as she made several conclusions to what could possibly be going around the world by inferring on Ishtar's and Ereshkigal's words.
"Because I don't want to live an existence where I don't have a body to interact with the world again when the Age of Man came about. I would prefer to sacrifice most of my powers to experience Earth instead of that never-ending existence of being between life and death." Ishtar admitted grudgingly. "To put it into perspective in human standards, I am avoiding a fate that would be like being placed in solitary confinement for your entire life. Can you live such an existence?"
Rin shivered just thinking about suffering such a fate. Even if gods were immortal, she was willing to bet that even they would go insane if they were to be struck between life and death for thousands of years. As Rin mentally banished the imagination of such a grim existence, she smiled as a great opportunity that never came once a lifetime showed itself.
"What would be your conditions if I was to serve as your vessel? My conditions are…" Rin began as she listed her terms that she must have.
- O -
Piña Co Lada was overwhelmed with a mix of feelings. She had finally gotten the chance of a lifetime to prove that women were just as worthy and capable as men in this chaotic time that had come to grip Falmart recently, but Pina felt regret. Tears welled up and dripped down at the paper in her hands listing the casualties of her injured and dead comrades. She remembered each and every one of the names written on the casualty list. They had been fellow sisters and comrades that had braved the harsh social stigma of women to do what had been traditional duties of the men and underwent the harsh training regime to turn young girls into capable female soldiers.
Oh, Pina wished she could see her injured and still-living comrades or what had been recovered of her deceased friends, but the situation of the empire made such thing impossible. Her comrades had been separated all around the empire to deal with rebellions, riots and wars happening across the empire as Falmart had fallen into chaos in what the gods had called, 'an invasion by gods of another world.'
"Princess," said a very familiar voice as the door to her room was knocked on. "May I come in?"
"There is no need to ask, Gray." Pina replied as she wiped her tears before Gray entered her room. "What news do you bring?"
"The sort that you don't wish to hear unfortunately," Gray responded in a grim tone. "As we speak, we are getting more reports that the situation is showing no signs of improving despite the empire's best efforts."
"I doubt the situation is going to improve anytime soon." Pina snorted as she recalled some news reserved only for the imperial family. "Any hope of divine assistance is pointless. The gods themselves are struggling fighting the foreign gods. We mortals need to rely on ourselves to get out of this mess."
The shocked expression Gray spotted was amusing to see, something that brought a fleeting moment of happiness in the grim present.
"You cannot disclose what you just heard to anyone," Said Pina seriously as she stared at Gray. "No one outside the highest ranked clergy of the gods knows about it and the imperial family only learned about it through our spies. Given how sensitive the information is in the current turmoil, I don't need to remind you that you cannot tell anyone."
"Of course, I will take this secret to the grave." Gray vowed as placed his hand over his heart. "His Majesty has given the order that your proposal in expanding the Rose Knight may go ahead, but the reforms that you recommended are being taken into consideration."
Pina let out a frustrated sigh as she ran her fingers through her hair. Her radical reforms, which could potentially save the empire in its current dire situation, was based on such a simple premise. Secluding half the population just on the basis of gender was an incredible waste of human resources from an objective perspective.
Her father, Molt Sol Augustus, was worrying too much about the 'possible' effects of her radical ideas when things couldn't really get much worse. The situation couldn't get any worse. The empire's forces were stretched thin to the point that the empire needed every able-bodied person either on the frontline or helping fuel the war machine from the back. If nothing was done then the downfall of the empire was inevitable.
She started to laugh as Pina recalled the excuses to dismiss her radical reforms. Some were so unbelievable that a child could think of a better excuse. The ones that made her stomach hurt from laughing were the excuses sprouted by the old foxes that seemed so logical that when Pina heard them in person it seemed so right and only after she was not talking to them in person did Pina realize she had been completely played.
"Princess there might be a way for your reforms to be made possible." Gray spoke, snapping Pina out of her musing.
Pina spun around and looked at Gray curiously. "What would that be?" She asked.
"That would be me," Said a voice similar to Gray, but spoken in a tone and manner different from what Pina remembered Gray ever using. "Maybe this will clarify what I am."
Suddenly, Pina felt a presence she had witnessed only a handful of times in her life.
She quickly got onto her knees and gazed down upon Gray's feet as she spoke, "May I know which divine one is before me?"
"Divine one, hmphm!" Gray snorted. "I should have expected being mistaken for my most powerful children." He shook his head. "I am the very world you live and die upon. My name is Falmart."
Pina's mouth opened as she gasped, not at what she was hearing but at the act she had nearly done. Whatever the identity of the entity possessing Gray, it was clearly a god by the sheer amount of power and divine aura it emitted. She sweated as death had been narrowly avoided. Questioning a god, especially disputing any of its claims was a sure way to anger a god.
"Oh, divine one, how may I help you?" Pina asked politely, crushing any curiosity she had for the real identity of the god before her.
"You were garnered my attention because of your unusual frequency of appearing in various timelines as pivotal figure at key moments that would define history." Falmart announced. "The current number of Apostles and Gods in Falmart are not enough to fight against those greedy foreigners plaguing my body for True Ether. You will be the first of many more Apostles and Gods to fight in my stead."
Piña Co Lada didn't even have time to respond. All that she knew was the strength in her body suddenly disappeared and collapsed onto the ground with her tired eyes closing. The last thing she heard before blacking out was something about, "taking the fight to the enemy."
What do you guys think? Is it good? Bad? Meh?
