Chapter Two: Begin Part 2

The forest was dark. Not just dark...but pitch black, thanks to the trees. As the night wore on, a crow perched itself on a branch and tilted its head. It caws once, and flies off into the distance. It was scared away by the sound of footsteps, crunching branches and heavy feet.

"So...where are we going buddy?" Alex asked in pure curiosity. He was walking slowly behind his friend, taking in the surroundings. At that moment, he bumped into his friend.

"Alex...do you not remember asking that?" Zach asked pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Noo?" Alex inquired.

"Like, five times?" Zach asked, to which Alex shook his head. Zach held his hands together and sighed. "Look, we are going to find a camp. A safe place for us to live. Until then...please, don't ask again. Alright?" Zach asked.

Alex fidgeted his fingers. He was afraid of what to say.

"You're gonna ask again...aren't you?" Zach sighs once more...

A lone man of 30 runs down the street, hoping to find a safe place. Turning his head, he grumbles upon seeing a forest. "Shit!" He muttered to himself.

He had no other choice. With all his might he flings his backpack into the forest and runs into the thick of it.

Alex smelled a flower. It smelled like a candy he once knew. But due to his...condition, he forgot what it was called. "This flower smells like a candy cane!" He says mistaking the smell.

Zach smiles at his friend's antics. He wished he could feel the way his friend did...but, if he did...who would keep them safe? No, He decided. He was going to keep Alex safe. No matter the cost.

At that moment, they heard a scream. "What was that!?" Alex asked paranoid. Zach shook his head and put a finger to his lips. He picked up his shotgun, and Alex nodded.

"HELP!" A voice screamed and they knew someone needed them.

"Alex!" Zach says bravely. "Stay behind me!" He says and runs in the direction of the scream.

He was going to die. After a month of survival, Paul T, was going to be eaten alive. As he held back a walker with his foot, kicking it repeatedly, he prayed that someone, ANYONE, would come to his rescue.

"Please..." he said. As he kicked with his might he says, "Please dear God!"

At that moment, two people run into the area and shoots the walker. "No!" Paul screams. "You idiots! Don't use damn guns!"

The two look at him and sigh. He was right. Of course he was! The two people HAD to be smart enough to know guns would attract more!

The man with glasses looks at Paul and sighs. "Were you bit?" He demands.

"No!" Paul shouted. "Thanks for the save, but you're only attracting more!"

"So are you by yelling!" Zach screams in response.

"Guys!" Alex roared causing the two to flinch. They looked at him in shock. "I hate to invade, but we gotta go!"

Zach, never hearing a yell like that nods. He grabs Alex and Paul and runs into the deep forest...

Paul sighed. He felt at ease now. "Really, thank you guys for the save," he said awkwardly. Zach nodded and Alex simply danced in the background.

Paul took a deep breath, ran a hand through his hair and breathed out. "So...uh. What's with him?" He asked pointing at Alex.

"He...hasn't been the same since his parents died," Zach replied. "Messed with his brain. I take care of him in a sense."

Paul nodded. "Why doesn't he, uh. Ya know?" He asked even more awkward before making a hand motion of a gun.

Zach shook his head. "He's my friend. Been my friend for a solid 10 years. I will NEVER hurt him."

Paul raised his hands In defense. "Woah now. I didn't mean to offend you. I just asked a simple question."

Zach nodded. In his mind he knew the man was only asking...but in his heart, he knew it wouldn't end well. The only matter was when.

"Zach?" Alex asked smiling.

"Yeah buddy?"

"I'm going sleepy time," Alex replied and went to lie down. He waved and lied down.

Paul smiled. He understood now. They were practically family. "Ya can't break that bond...can you?"

"No. He's like a brother to me." And Zach spoke the truth.

The next day

The birds chirped and sung in their native tunes. It was morning. Zach opened his eyes first. He yawned. "Shit," he mumbled to himself. As he woke up and did his, new morning routine, he couldn't help but feel happy.

Alex awoke next, and had a happy face. He clapped and saw Zach cooking. "Food?" He asks happily.

"Food," Zach responds smiling.

Paul awoke later that day and realized he slept in. He had a dream of the old days. When it was him and his family-

But he couldn't bring himself to remember. He chose to hide his feelings. Yawning, he sat up and scratched his head. He knew he smelled off. He couldn't shower. Hadn't had one in a little over a week. Sighing he saw Zach cooking eggs over a fire.

"How much food we got?" Paul asked afraid he knew the answer.

"Just enough for breakfast and lunch," he explained. Paul nodded. "So...we may or may not need to do a run to find food...before or after a safe place."

Alex twirled into the area. "Listen to the pretty birds!" Alex sang quietly. "Ahhhh. Nature..." he trailed off. He heard his stomach grumble. "Is food ready?"

Lori Grimes yawned as she awoke. She was going to give Carl a haircut today. She knew he hated them...but it had to be done.

Awaking next to her was Shane. "Morning beautiful," he said kissing her neck. She moaned softly.

"Shane," she chuckled, "we gotta get up." She tried but failed to say.

"Just one more," Shane asked lifting her chin in his hand.

"One more kiss, that's for sure," she said and kissed his lips lightly. "Ok, good. Now, let's get up, shall we?"

Alex sighed as he ate the one egg. He felt very hungry and was going to ask for ketchup. However, he already knew there was none. He was smart enough to know that!

Zach ate the egg and felt his stomach grumble. "Damn..." he muttered to himself. "Guess we need lunch meat."

"For what?" Paul inquired.

"For a sandwich."

"Why?"

Zach looked at Paul in surprise. "How am I supposed to eat a sandwich without meat?"

Paul shrugged. "Maybe a grilled cheese?" He joked. Zach catching on, scoffed.

"Ha, ha. Very funny," Zach replied with a light scowl.

"I try," Paul answered trying to look as innocent as possible. This caused them to laugh hysterically. Three friends, just hanging out. However, what they didn't know was a safe place was right nearby...and they certainly didn't know the dangers that would befall them in the coming months...

Authors Note: Ah, another chapter done! And a perfect beginning to the saga. Now, the next chapter will be a mini one introducing the characters to each other. Not bad being written on phone huh? But for now...see ya next time!
