Chapter 2

August 11

The beautiful August morning started off early for the Thatchers and Thorntons as it was the first day of senior year for Jack and Elizabeth and the first day of sophomore year for Tom and Julie. After waking up, reading their Devotional, then getting dressed in their school uniform, Jack told his parents and brother goodbye then headed out to his grey Ford F-150 to go pick up Elizabeth for breakfast then school.

As Elizabeth waited for him to arrive, she stood in the kitchen talking to her parents and Julie.

"So, sister. Are you excited for your first day of senior year?"

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "I am but also a little nervous. I just want this year to be as memorable and amazing as possible."

William chimed in reassuring his second oldest daughter. "There's no need to worry, Elizabeth. If you keep God in the center of your life and stay focused on your studies and extracurricular activities, I'm sure you'll be just fine."

Grace then gave her thoughts. "I agree with your father. I know it'll be a wonderful year for you." She shortly paused. "And before I forget, have you talked to Viola recently? I know she starts her classes tomorrow."

"I have. I just talked to her yesterday. She had called to say good luck for my first day of senior year today and I told her the same thing. I can't believe she's already a sophomore at Baylor this year. How time flies."

Grace responded to what Elizabeth just said. "I can't either. Time definitely does fly. I know she'll make a wonderful interior designer someday."

With Elizabeth, Julie, and William in agreement about Grace's last comment, they continued engaging in conversation before hearing the doorbell ring a few minutes later signifying Jack's arrival.

Once he was invited inside by Grace, he walked in the kitchen greeting Julie with a hug then William with a friendly and firm handshake. "Good morning, Mr. Thatcher. How are you doing today?"

"I'm doing great, Jack. Thank you for asking. How are you? Ready for senior year?"

Jack smiled and nodded giving a response. "Yes, sir. I'm ready and excited. I'm sure it'll be a wonderful year, especially with this amazing girl by my side." Jack wrapped his right arm around Elizabeth's waist gently pulling her close as he sweetly kissed her temple. "Hi, darlin'. How are you?"

Elizabeth wrapped her left arm around his waist gently pulling him close while giving him a smile. "I'm doing wonderful, especially now that you're here. So happy to see you."

"I'm so happy to see you too, darlin'." After a few more minutes of conversation with William, Grace, Julie, and of course Elizabeth, Jack looked at his watch then sweetly at his girl before speaking up. "Well, it's about 6:30. You ready to head out for school, Beth? I was thinking we could stop for breakfast on the way."

"That sounds great, sweetheart. I'm ready whenever you are. We don't want to be late for our first day of senior year."

"No, we definitely don't."

With that, Jack and Elizabeth said their goodbyes to her parents and Julie then made their way out to Jack's truck. Jack offered to put Elizabeth's book bag and other needed belongings in the back seat which she graciously accepted. He then opened her door and made sure she was completely inside before kissing her cheek, closing her door then going around to the driver's side so they could stop for breakfast at High Brow Coffee & Tea before school.

On the short drive to Battle Ground Academy, they engaged in friendly conversation about multiple things including their class schedule and enjoyed the one on one time together before all the craziness of senior year would begin.

"Thank you for a wonderful breakfast, Jack."

Jack sweetly took her left hand with his right and intertwined his fingers with his while keeping his left hand on the wheel and briefly giving her a smile. "Of course. It was my pleasure." He took a moment to briefly look at her. "Beth, you look so beautiful today as always."

"Awe, Jack. You're too sweet and look so handsome yourself. Can you believe we're starting senior year today?"

"No, I can't, Beth. It's crazy. High school has gone by so fast."

"It definitely has, honey. I'm sure this year will go by even faster. We just need to enjoy every moment we can."

Jack gently squeezed her hand. "I agree, sweetheart." He shortly paused. "So, our class schedule. 1st period, we have AP English Literature & Composition with Mrs. Graves. 2nd Period is AP U.S. History with Ms. Stillman. 3rd period, Yearbook with Ms. Stewart. 4th period is AP Statistics with Mrs. Ramsey. 5th period, we have Honors Biology with your aunt, Mrs. Delaney. Then we have lunch and 6th period Spanish IV Honors with Mr. Gowen. 7th period, I have History of Popular Music in America with Mr. Sheridan while you have Honors Studio Art/2D with Mrs. Montgomery. And 8th period is our Applied Models of Economics (Capstone Course) with Mrs. Lawson."

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "Yes. That's right. Hopefully, all our classes will go well this year. I am a little nervous about AP Statistics and Spanish IV honors though. Even though I've heard how nice Mrs. Ramsey and Mr. Gowen are, I've also heard they're tough teachers."

There was a short bout of silence as Jack pulled into a parking spot at the school but once he put the car in park, he turned off the engine and they slightly turned in their seats to face each other. Gently taking her hands with both of his and looking in her eyes, he responded to what she had said. "I think they'll go just fine. You're the absolute smartest girl I know, so there's no need to worry. You'll do amazing, baby. I have no doubt. And if we run into any trouble with something in any of the classes we're in together, not just the two you mentioned, we'll work through it and help each other out. Alright?"

Elizabeth couldn't help but smile at Jack's comments. "Alright. I know we will. And thank you for the kind words and encouragement, honey. You're the sweetest and smartest guy I know. There's no doubt you'll do amazing, too."

"Thank you, my sweet Beth. That means the world. I love you so much, baby."

Elizabeth leaned over the center console to give Jack an Eskimo kiss then a sweet, tender kiss on the lips while still holding his hands. "I love you more, honey."

After sharing another sweet kiss on the lips, Jack broke the brief silence. "Alright. It's 7:15. We probably should head inside so we're not late. You ready for this, babe?"

"I agree. And yes, with you by my side, I'm definitely ready, honey. Let's go." With that said, Jack took the car key out of the ignition and placed it securely in his backpack before getting out of the car. He walked around to open Elizabeth's door, then offered his hand which she graciously accepted. "Thank you. Always the gentleman."

Jack smiled sweetly and nodded. "Of course. And especially for you, babe."

A few seconds later, they grabbed their backpacks and other needed belongings before they headed inside to their lockers which were side by side then to their first class.

While they were in 1st Period AP English Literature & Composition, the rest of their fellow seniors as well as some friends from the junior class were in English IV taught by Shane Cantrell.

2nd period was their AP U.S. History class at the same time as 20th Century History taught by Jed Campbell.

After AP U.S. History & 20th Century History, it was time for 3rd period yearbook as well as Theater Arts: Production Emphasis class taught by James Addison.

4th period was AP Statistics class as well as the Honors Pre-Calculus class taught by Wade Barrett.

The morning went by quickly as it was now time for the fifth and final period before lunch for juniors and seniors. These classes included Honors Biology, Marine Biology taught by Tom Trevoy, & Molecular Biology of Disease I & II taught by Laurel Miller.

After 5th period, Jack and Elizabeth made a quick stop by their lockers before heading out to meet their friends Lee Coulter, Rosemary LeVeaux, Peter Stanton, Clara Gellar, Carson Shepherd, Faith Carter, Ty Borden, and Amy Fleming for lunch at Franklin Mercantile Deli.

Soon after they were seated at a table, they were greeted by their server who took their order. Jack, Elizabeth, Lee, and Rosie decided on the 'Classic BLT' and a glass of unsweetened tea with lemon while Peter, Clara, Carson, Faith, Ty, and Amy decided on 'Chicken Club' and a glass of water with lemon.

A few minutes later, the ten friends were all greeted by Co Owner & General manager, Abigail Stanton. "Hi, everyone! How are you?"

Jack smiled and politely responded. "We're all doing well. Thank you for asking. How are you today?"

"I'm doing great and so happy to see some of my favorite customers and employees. Are you all having a great first day of senior year so far?"

Clara graciously responded, "Awe thanks, Abigail. We're so happy to see you too. We are having a great day. Right, guys?"

Peter, Faith, Carson, Amy, Ty, Elizabeth, and Jack all answered in unison. "Definitely."

Ty then continued talking. "Hopefully, the rest of our classes will go well, too."

Abigail smiled and gave a reassuring response. "I'm sure they will. You're all some of the smartest seniors I know. I have no doubt you'll do well this year. Just enjoy it while it lasts. It goes by so fast."

Ty smiled at Abigail's kind words. "Thank you, Mrs. Stanton. That means a lot. We definitely will."

The group of friends all continued talking to Abigail a few more minutes before she realized she needed to get back to work. "Alright. Well, I should probably get back to work. It was great to see you all. Have a great rest of the day!" She shortly paused giving a friendly smile to Jack, Clara, and Faith. "Jack, Clara, Faith. See you for work on Saturday morning?"

Faith smiled respectfully. "Yes, ma'am. We'll be here. Hope you have a wonderful rest of the day as well."

With that, they said their goodbyes to Abigail then went back to talking amongst themselves with Carson being the one to start the conversation. "So. Did everyone have a good summer? I know I did."

Jack responded first. "Elizabeth and I definitely did. Besides the annual trip to the Grand Canyon with our families a couple weeks ago, we took a few day trips together to Chattanooga, Nashville, and Knoxville and spent a lot of time here in Franklin going to the movies, going on trail rides at River Circle Farm, hiking, and just hanging out by the pool at my house."

Amy was next. "That sounds awesome and so much fun, Jack, especially the trail rides. I had a great summer too. Most of the summer was spent here in Franklin working at the farm and with some beautiful rescue horses. Along with that, Ty and I spent some time together going hiking and hanging out around town. What about you, Lee and Rosie? I'm sure y'all spent some time together too."

Lee smiled and nodded. "We did indeed. Like you, Ty, and Jack and Elizabeth, we spent a lot of time here in Franklin but we also took a big trip to New York with our families last month. It was so much fun, especially going to a Mets baseball game."

Rosie smiled and quickly interjected. "That was fun but we can't forget about that amazing Broadway musical we saw, 'Anything Goes' the last night we were there. I think that was the best part of the trip."

Lee kindly disagreed. "Well, in my opinion, my favorite part, other than spending time with you and our families, was the baseball game."

Rosie smiled at Lee's comment. "Awe, I loved spending time with y'all too. And about the baseball game. Whatever you say, Leland Coulter."

Jack finally got a chance to say what was on his mind as he slightly smiled. "Ok. I know I'm a minute or two late but really, Lee? I thought y'all were Atlanta Braves fans. Come on, man."

Lee quickly reassured Jack. "Don't worry, Jack. We still are but considering we were in their home territory and the opposing team was the Yankees, we had to cheer for them."

Jack grinned as he breathed a sigh of relief. "That's understandable. I don't like the Yankees."

Carson chimed in with his comment. "I think all of us here are in agreement with that statement, Jack." He shortly paused. "Peter. What did you and Clara do this summer?"

"Well, other than spending a little time here and there just hanging out at the movies and around town, I took a trip with my parents and siblings, Becky and Cody to Yellowstone National Park and Clara took a trip with her parents to the Outer Banks in North Carolina."

Clara quickly responded. "Yes, I did. It was beautiful."

"That's so cool. I've heard great things about Yellowstone and the Outer Banks. I'd love to take a trip to both someday, and maybe even with Faith, here."

Faith nodded in agreement. "I'd love that, Carson. I think it would be a lot of fun."

"Yes, it definitely would." Carson briefly paused as he thought of his next question. "Peter, you mentioned Becky and Cody. What grade are they in now?"

Peter quickly answered his question. "Cody is in 5th grade and Becky is a freshman. She also told me she made the cheerleading squad and that she's so excited about cheering with you."

Carson shook his head in amazement. "Wow. That's crazy. They're growing up so fast."

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "Yes, they are, Carson. And she did, Peter. She's so sweet and I'm so excited to cheer with her this year." There was a short pause before she smiled again addressing Carson. "Carson. You never shared what you and Faith did this summer."

"That's right. I didn't. Sorry about that. Other than hanging out every now and then around Franklin and at Radnor Lake State Park with Faith, here. I took the annual trip with my family to Estes Park, Colorado."

Faith quickly chimed in. "Yes. And I took the annual trip with my family to Nassau in the Bahamas. It's so beautiful there."

Elizabeth as well as everyone else, couldn't help but smile at hearing about Carson and Faith's summer. "That's amazing, y'all. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, we're so glad you both had a great summer. I've heard the Bahamas as well as Estes Park is beautiful. I'd love to take a trip there someday."

Faith quickly encouraged Elizabeth. "Oh, Liz. You definitely should. I've also been to Estes Park like Carson and it's beautiful too. I think you'd love it."

"I'm sure I would, Faith. Hopefully, I can visit both sometime."

Jack smiled at Elizabeth lovingly and responded. "Babe, if those are two places you'd like to visit, I'm sure we can figure out a way to make it happen. I've also always wanted to travel there but it wouldn't be the same without my girl."

Elizabeth's heart melted at Jack's comment, especially in front of their friends. "You're the sweetest." She leaned over to sweetly kiss his cheek. "I feel the same. It wouldn't be the same without you either. We should definitely make it happen."

A smile came across Rosie's face as she shared her thoughts. "Ok, now. Y'all are just the cutest. Don't you all agree?"

Lee, Peter, Clara, Carson, Faith, Ty, and Amy all agreed in unison. "Yes."

Jack responded graciously. "Thank you! We love y'all!"

Clara smiled and spoke up for everyone. "We love you both right back."

As the group of friends ate their lunch, they continued talking amongst themselves about random things such as memories they've all shared over the years growing up and their classes for senior year. They were enjoying each other's company so much that they almost lost track of time because it was now time to head back to school for the last three periods of the day.

6th period for Jack, Elizabeth and one half of the seniors and juniors was Spanish IV Honors while the other half of the seniors and juniors were in Spanish IV taught by Edith Sampson.

7th Period for Jack, some of his senior classmates, some juniors, sophomores, and freshmen was History of Popular Music in America while Elizabeth had Honors Studio Art/2D which included the rest of the senior and junior class.

8th period for the seniors came quickly which was the Applied Models of Economics (Capstone Course) that included all 22 seniors in one room.

Once school ended for the day, Jack and Elizabeth made a stop by their lockers to gather their needed belongings. As they were walking down the hall towards the door, Elizabeth saw something on the announcements board that caught her eye causing her to stop.

Jack stopped a few seconds later and asked what she saw. "What is it, sweetheart?"

Elizabeth pointed to the sign-up sheet for the school paper. "It's a sign up for 'The Echo' school paper." She looked at Jack and smiled. "Should I join again this year?"

Jack smiled back at his girl. "Well, did you enjoy it the last three years?"

Elizabeth quickly answered. "I definitely did. It was so much fun."

"Then you should totally do it."

"I'd love to but at the same time, I don't want to take on too much and not be able to handle it. I mean I'm already taking mostly all honors classes. And on top of that, I'm cheer captain, yearbook editor, and have work at the bakery."

Jack looked sweetly in her eyes and took one of her hands in his. "Sweetheart. Remember what I said this morning? You're the smartest, most amazing girl I know. I have no doubt you can handle it all and still do awesome but whatever you decide, I'll support you."

Elizabeth's heart melted hearing what Jack just said. "Awe, yes I do. Thank you, baby. I love you and am so grateful for your support, no matter what."

"And I love you." He sweetly kissed her left hand where her promise ring was. "I'll always support you, my beautiful girl."

Elizabeth briefly looked lovingly in Jack's eyes. "Oh, Jack. I know you will. I'll always support you too." She shortly paused thinking about her decision. "Ok. I'll do it. Jack, do you mind grabbing a pen out of my book bag for me?"

"I know you will, Beth. And not at all." He grabbed a pen out of her book bag and handed it to her. "Here you go, sweetheart."

"Thank you, honey." She wrote her name on the sign up sheet. "I'm sure it'll be another fun year." She handed Jack the pen to put back in her book bag. "I can't wait."

Jack smiled at his girl as he placed the pen back in her book bag. "I'm sure it will. I'm proud of you, babe." He shortly paused coming up with an idea. "What do you say we head out, go get a smoothie, then hang out at my house for a few hours?"

"I love that idea! And I even packed a bag with extra clothes and a swimsuit in case we decided to take a swim in the pool."

"Wow. You're prepared, darlin'. I love it though and can't wait to spend some time with you."

"I can't wait to spend some time with you, honey."

With that, they walked out of the school and to Jack's Ford F-150 as they loaded the car, he opened Elizabeth's door making sure she was completely inside before closing it, then walked around to the drivers side so they could head to Franklin Juice Company to get a smoothie.

On the way there, they held hands with fingers intertwined and resting on the center console, sang along to a few songs on the radio, shared occasional brief loving gazes, talked, laughed, and just enjoyed being together.

When they walked in, they took a minute to look at the menu then placed their order. Jack decided on the 'El Verde' smoothie with banana, mango, pineapple, spinach, avocado, Himalayan salt, lemon, cilantro, and coconut water while Elizabeth picked the 'Rio' smoothie with strawberry, mango, banana, blueberry, and apple juice.

After receiving their smoothies, they walked back out to the car so they could make their way to his house to hang out for a while.

Once they arrived at Jack's house, they grabbed their belongings from the car then headed inside. They had just walked in the kitchen when they were greeted by Thomas who looked from Jack to Elizabeth. "Hi, son. Hi, Elizabeth."

Jack gave his father a smile. "Hi, dad."

Elizabeth followed doing the same thing. "Hi, Mr. Thornton. How are you today?"

"I'm doing great, Elizabeth. Thank you for asking. Just glad to have a day off from the station. Did you two have a great first day of senior year?"

Jack responded to his father's question. "We definitely did even though we didn't do much in our classes today except go over the syllabus for the curriculum."

"Well, that's understandable. While the first day is always very important, it's also usually pretty easy. You two have all the same classes, right?"

Jack briefly smiled at Elizabeth then looked at his dad and friendly nodded. "Yes, sir. All the same classes except one which is my 7th period 'History of Popular Music in America' class. She has 'Honors Studio Art/2D' instead."

"That's awesome. And how is the music class? It sounds like a fun one."

"It's great, dad. I love the class already even though we haven't technically learned anything yet. And the teacher, Mr. Sheridan is so really cool. I can already tell he's going to be one of my favorites this year."

"So happy to hear that, son." He shortly paused recognizing the name Jack just mentioned. "Wait. Do you mean Jack Sheridan who owns The Grilled Cheeserie downtown?"

"Yes, sir. That's him. And next semester I'm in his Intro to Recording Technology class."

"Wow! That's so cool he's your teacher this year. He's very nice and I've heard he's a favorite around BGA. Next semester's class sounds awesome too. I know you've always loved singing and playing guitar so I'm sure that will be enjoyable too."

"I think it will too. I'm really excited about it."

There was a brief moment of silence before Thomas addressed Elizabeth. "How's the art class, Elizabeth? Do you like it?"

Elizabeth smiled and responded."Yes, sir. I definitely do. I think it'll be a lot of fun. And Mrs. Montgomery is so nice too."

"I'm sure it will. I've heard great things about how amazing of a teacher she is. And art was always one of my favorite classes when I was in school."

"I don't think I knew that. That's awesome, Mr. Thornton."

Thomas smiled and nodded as he continued the conversation. "So, other than Mr. Sheridan being one of your teachers, did anything else exciting happen today?"

Jack took a moment to think of something before responding. "Well, my girl here," He gave Elizabeth a loving smile while wrapping his left arm around her waist. "Signed up to work on the school paper again for the 4th year in a row. On top of that she's already cheer captain, yearbook editor, and taking all honors classes as you already know. I told her earlier but I'm so proud of her."

Elizabeth smiled at Jack's sweet words. "Awe, thank you, Jack. You're too kind. I'm so proud of you as well with your honors classes and being quarterback of the football team. That's amazing."

"Thank you, Beth. Your support means the world."

Thomas couldn't help but smile at the sweet interaction between his son and Elizabeth. "You know, Jack. I recently told your mom this but you two really do make a wonderful couple. I'm so happy you have each other."

"Thank you, dad. That means a lot. We're both definitely very grateful to have each other." He kissed Elizabeth on the temple as she smiled and nodded and he continued. "Speaking of mom. Where is she? I thought she'd probably be home by now after picking up Tom from school."

"Don't worry, son. She's alright. I talked to her just before y'all got here and she said Tom wanted an after school snack from Chick Fil A so they should be home soon."

"Ok. That's fine. I wasn't worried. I figured that's where they'd be but I thought I'd ask anyway." He briefly paused. "Well, if it's alright with you, I think Elizabeth and I are gonna go hang out in my room for a while and maybe watch a movie or something in the entertainment room."

"That's perfectly alright. I'm sure y'all are ready to spend some time one on one time together after being at school all day. I'll let your ma and brother know where you are when they get here."

Jack and Elizabeth shared a smile, "We definitely are. And sounds good."

Just as they started making their way to the stairs, Tom spoke up again. "Just don't get too carried away. I see the way you two look at each other."

They looked at each other sharing a laugh before Jack politely and respectfully responded while slightly rolling his eyes and his cheeks started turning red. "Dad!"

Tom laughed as he quickly interjected. "I'm sorry, son. I was just teasing. You two just go enjoy yourselves."

"It's alright. And I'm sure we will."

With that, Jack and Elizabeth made their way up the stairs to his room.

Seeing the photo in the frame on Jack's desk when they walked in his room, she smiled, briefly picking it up. "Awe, Jack. I love this picture of us."

Jack took a few steps away from his bed and approached his desk giving her a smile then kissing her temple. "I love it too, honey. My first home baseball game of junior year. That was a great day."

She smiles back at him. "It definitely was, especially cheering you on from the stands and going to The Grilled Cheeserie for milkshakes after the game to celebrate a Wildcat victory."

"Oh, yes. I loved that. It made me so happy to see your smiling face cheering me on from the stands and celebrating a Wildcat victory with you at The Grilled Cheeserie was so much fun."

"Awe, Jack. I couldn't agree more. And I'm always gonna be there to cheer you on whenever I can."

"I know you will."

After Jack said that, they both decided they want to change into more comfortable decides on a pair of black athletic shorts and a blue 'Battle Ground Academy Wildcats' T-shirt while she decided on a pair of denim shorts and her grey T-shirt with a football reading 'My favorite player wears #54' along with a messy braid in her hair

As Jack stood in his bathroom, he called out to her to make sure she was ready for him to join her. "Hey, Beth. Are you ready?"

Standing in his bedroom, she smiled to herself thinking about how polite he was. "Yeah. I'm ready, hon. You can come out now."

"Ok. Be right there." Jack opened the door and walked out of the bathroom setting his school uniform on the dresser then approached Elizabeth who was standing by his bed. He looked lovingly at her as he rested his hands on her hips. "Wow! I love that shirt. You look so cute, babe."

"Thank you, sweetheart. I love wearing this shirt. And you're so handsome."

"Oh, Elizabeth. It melts my heart to know you feel that way." He briefly paused. "You know. I'm ready to do some snuggling with my girl. What do you say, Beth?"

"Yes, I'm so ready for some snuggle time with my sweet guy."

They shared a sweet smile as they sat down in the bean bag chair in his room and he wrapped his right arm around her. "So, we made it through our first day of senior year. What do you think, sweetheart?"

"I think it's gonna be a wonderful year, honey."

"I do too, especially with you by my side."

There was a short bout of silence before Elizabeth asked the question that was on her mind. "Jack, can we make a promise to just enjoy this year and make as many memories together as possible?"

"Of course, we can. I definitely want to remember this year as the best ever."

"I feel the same, Jack."

Noticing how distracted Elizabeth looked, Jack felt the need to check on his girl. "Beth, what's wrong?"

Elizabeth quickly responded with a fake smile holding in how she was really feeling. "Everything's ok. I promise." She shortly paused. "I'm sorry. I was just distracted."

Jack sweetly and tenderly took both of her hands in his gently rubbing her fingers with his thumbs as a look of concern came across his face. "My sweet Beth, I've literally known you my whole life and I can tell when something is bothering you. Please tell me what's wrong so I can be there for you."

"Alright. I just have a lot on my mind about the future."

"You mean about college?"

"Yes, but I'm mostly worried about what's gonna happen with us after graduation."

Wanting to know more, Jack continued with a compassionate, caring look in his eyes. "What do you mean, darlin'?"

A sad and worried look came across her face as tears started filling her eyes. "Well, I know senior year just started but I don't even want to think about having to be separated when we start college. I'm worried you'll forget about me. And I've heard of some couples not being able to make long distance work and to be completely honest, it scares me. I don't want that to happen to us." The tears start rolling down her cheeks. "I'm sorry. It's probably stupid."

Jack continued holding her hands and rubbing his fingers with his thumbs as he looked deeply into her blue eyes with as much love and compassion as possible. "My beautiful Beth. Listen to me right now. It is NOT stupid. The thought of being separated from you in college scares me too but I'd NEVER in a million years forget about you. Even if we do end up going to different schools, I promise I'm not gonna let anything or anyone come between us. You're so important to me."

With tears still in her eyes, she responded. "Honey, you're so special to me but you can't promise that. Sometimes, life just gets in the way and there's nothing anyone can do, no matter how hard you try to make it work."

The hand holding, and loving gaze continued. "Darlin'. You love me, right?"

Elizabeth looked back into his eyes lovingly as more tears were rolling down her cheeks. "Of course, I do. You're my world."

"And you're mine." He gently wiped her tears away then took her hands with his again while keeping his loving gaze. "I know you said that some couples just can't find a way to make it work no matter how hard they try but we're not one of those couples. I truly believe with all of my heart that our love for each other is strong enough to survive any distance and time apart. You're the most amazing girl and definitely worth every single mile that may come between us." He wrapped his right arm around her again gently pulling her as close to him as possible while taking her right hand with his left and sweetly kissing her head. "I absolutely can't imagine my life without you."

"Oh, Jack. I know I said I was worried but deep down, I do agree. Our love for each other is very strong and no matter what obstacles we may face in the future, I know we'll get through it as long as we're together. You're the sweetest, most amazing guy and I really don't know how I got so lucky." She gently leaned her head and nose against his. "I honestly can't live without you, honey."

Jack started gently rubbing her shoulder with his right thumb and her fingers of her right hand with his left while keeping his head and nose leaning his head against hers. "Yes we will. Everything's gonna be ok, baby. I promise we'll make this work, no matter what. I love you way too much to let you go."

"Awe, Jack. I trust you completely. If you say, we'll make it work, I know we will. I love you with my whole heart and there's no way I'm letting you go either."

Little did they know, Charlotte had been standing right outside his door unnoticeable for the past few minutes listening to the sweet conversation between them. She took a few more seconds then gently knocked on his door. "Knock knock." She smiled as she opened the door and walked in. "Hi, son. Hi, Lizzie."

Jack and Elizabeth both smiled back as they responded with him speaking up first. "Hi, ma!"

"Hi, Mrs. Thornton. How are you?"

"I'm doing well. Thank you for asking. How are you? Did you two have a good first day."

Elizabeth friendly nodded. "Yes, ma'am. We did." She briefly shared a smile with Jack as he gently squeezed her hand he was holding. "We both think it's going to be a wonderful year."

"That's amazing to hear. So glad you both had a great first day." She shortly paused. "Lizzie, will you be staying for dinner tonight?"

Elizabeth's face lit up at the thought of a little more time with Jack. "I'd love to as long as it's no trouble. I don't want to impose."

"Oh, Lizzie. Nonsense. It's no trouble at all."

"Alright. I'll definitely stay then. I just need to let my parents know. Thank you for the offer, Mrs. Thornton."

"Of course. We love you and are so happy to have you stay for dinner." There was a very brief moment of silence before Charlotte spoke up again. "Well, I'll let you two continue enjoying yourselves. Have fun. Tom is in his room doing homework and I'll just be downstairs with your dad. I'm probably going to start cooking dinner in a little while. We're having skirt steak with avocado chimichurri and a side of mashed potatoes."

"Ok. Sounds good. I love you, ma."

"I love you too, son. Just let me know if y'all need anything."

Jack smiled and nodded. "We will."

With that, Charlotte left the room as Elizabeth made a quick call to her parents to let them know she was staying for dinner then went back to snuggling with her boyfriend.

With his arm around her, Jack sweetly smiled. "I'm so happy you decided to stay for dinner, babe."

"I am too. I love spending time with you."

"And I love spending time with you. It's my favorite part of the day."

"Awe, you're too sweet. I feel the same." She briefly paused. "Jack, I was just thinking. In what ways do we complement each other?"

"Well, there are many ways that we compliment each other but I'll just mention a few big ones that really stick out. One, I think we do a great job of constantly showing each other our love even with the little things such as me bringing you your favorite coffee in the mornings and you sending me sweet texts no matter what kind of day I'm having. Two is building each other up. We really know each other's strengths and weaknesses and help each other improve to be the best version of ourselves. Three, I believe we have a great respect for each other and our relationship. We set boundaries and even in the arguments we've had, we never belittle each other or make each other feel bad about ourselves which is very important. Four, we really support each other's goals and help each other achieve them, and are happy for each other's success. Five, we make each other laugh constantly. And last but not least. I think we really listen to each other. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I know for a fact I can come to you and you'll always be there to listen to whatever is going on without any judgement. Just love and understanding which makes me so happy."

"My sweet, Jack. I feel the same and totally agree with everything you said. That would've been my answer too."

Jack gently took her hands in his and gazed deeply into her blue eyes. "Beth, I know I say this a lot but it's so important. I'm honestly so grateful for you. You're my world and I'd seriously be lost without you, baby."

"Awe, darling. I couldn't be more thankful to have the sweetest guy. You're everything to me and I'd be so lost without you too." She continued holding his hands while gently leaning her forehead and nose against his. "I love you so much."

"I love you so much more." He sweetly and flirtatiously gazed at her. "In fact." Jack stood up from the bean bag chair and offered his hand while keeping his loving gaze. "I really wanna kiss those sweet lips of yours and show just how much." He helped her stand up then gently pulled her close to him by wrapping his arms around her waist. "Come on, baby. Let's have a little afternoon make out."

"Oh, Jack. I want the same thing. Please kiss me, honey."

Jack gently stroked her cheek then gently picked her up, wrapped his arms around her waist, and kept his gaze as they quickly walked the short distance to his bed. He removed all the unnecessary pillows then continued by asking his girl a question. "Hey, babe. Wanna listen to some music while we kiss?"

Elizabeth's face lit up. "I'd love to, sweetheart. Always making things so special and romantic."

Jack hit shuffle on his 'Love Songs For Babe' playlist on Spotify then looked in her eyes. "Of course." He gently lay her down with her head on the pillow then straddled her hips while stroking her cheek. "You're my baby and I never want you to forget how special you are to me."

Elizabeth looked deeply in his hazel eyes with pure love. "Oh, Jack. I love being your baby. And I promise I'll never forget. You're pretty special to me too."

As he leaned over and started sweetly kissing her lips while gently intertwining his fingers with hers next to her on the pillow, soft moans escaped their lips.

"Mhmm. Jack. You're so amazing, honey."

Jack took a moment to smile sweetly at her while still holding her hands. "You're more amazing, Beth." He kissed her lips again, only this time a little longer. "I'm such a lucky guy."

"I'm the lucky one." She shortly paused. "My sweet Jack. You are just so handsome."

Jack sat back up to gaze at her with pure love while gently running his hands up her sides over her shirt then stroking her cheek. "And you're so beautiful." He started slightly leaning back on the pillow against the headboard as he gently pulled her on his lap to face him and rested his hands on her hips slightly under her shirt while keeping his gaze. "The most beautiful girl in the universe." He then passionately kissed her on the lips. "You're absolutely perfect."

Elizabeth's heart melted at Jack's sweet words as she ran her fingers through his hair. "Jack, you're too sweet and the most handsome guy in the universe but I'm not..."

Jack interrupted her with another kiss. "Yes you are. You're perfect for me, babe." He briefly paused when he heard, 'When You Look Me in the Eyes' by the Jonas Brothers started playing on the Spotify playlist. "I love this song! May I sing it to you, Beth?"

"You definitely can. I love hearing you sing to me, honey."

Jack started singing the words to the song while gazing deeply in her blue eyes.

If the heart is always searching

Can you ever find a home

I've been looking for that someone

I'll never make it on my own

Dreams can't take the place of loving you

There's gotta be a million reasons why it's true

Jack kept his deep gaze as he started gently rubbing her sides slightly under her shirt and continued singing along to the next lyrics.

When you look me in the eyes

And tell me that you love me

Every thing's alright

When you're right here by my side

When you look me in the eyes

I catch a glimpse of heaven

I find my paradise

When you look me in the eyes

How long will I be waiting

To be with you again

Gonna tell you that I love you

In the best way that I can

I can't take a day without you here

You're the light that makes my darkness disappear

As the song continued, so did Jack's deep loving gaze and affectionate touches and by time it was over, and the next song started playing, Elizabeth was smiling from ear to ear after the sweet gesture from him. "Jack Thornton! I really don't want to cry anymore today but I seriously could with how sweet you are. That's such a beautiful song already and hearing you sing it just for me makes it even more special. Thank you!"

He continued gently rubbing her side slightly under her shirt with one hand and stroking her cheek with the other. "Of course, my sweet Beth. I just love you so stinking much and I'll never in a million years get tired of singing to you, darlin'."

"And I'll never get tired of hearing you sing to me. I love you like crazy, sweetheart." She flirtatiously smiled. "You know, I really wanna do some more kissing. Don't you?"

Jack smiled and nodded. "I definitely do. Let's kiss some more, baby."

Once that was said, Jack and Elizabeth shared a loving smile then spent the next thirty minutes kissing and showing how much, they meant to each other. After that, they went back to snuggling and talking for another hour before it was time for dinner.

As everyone sat around the table eating dinner, they talked about multiple things such as summer memories, the upcoming school year, and what dreams Jack and Elizabeth might have for college, and enjoyed each other's company

Remembering the conversation they had earlier in his room about college, Jack held one of her hands under the table and gently squeezed it three times to say 'I love you' when it was brought up by Charlotte before she repeated the same sweet gesture back to him.

By the time they finished dinner and talked fifteen more minutes, Jack realized it was around 9:15 and he needed to take Elizabeth home since he made a promise to her parents that she'd be back by ten.

After Elizabeth grabbed her belongings she left in his room before dinner, the couple said their goodbyes to his parents and brother then made their way out to his pickup truck with Jack opening then closing her door for her as usual then walking around to the driver's side, so they could be on their way.

When they arrived ten minutes later, they got out of the car with Jack opening her door once again before she grabbed her book bag and all other belongings, and he walked her to the front door.

"My sweet Beth. I had such a wonderful time hanging out with you today."

"Awe, I had an amazing time with you, darling. And I might've told you earlier, but thanks again for the whole talk about college earlier. You really eased my mind about everything."

He gently took her hands in his and looked lovingly in her eyes. "No problem, Beth. I'm so glad I could help." He briefly paused. "I just want you to know that no matter what happens after graduation, I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart. I'm gonna be right here by your side."

"Oh, Jack. I know. I'm always gonna be here for you too."

They continued talking for a few minutes before deciding it was time to say their good nights.

After saying goodnight, they shared one more kiss before Jack went to get back in his car, make sure she was safely inside, start the car, then head home.

A little while later, Elizabeth was sitting up in bed after just finishing her nightly Bible reading when her phone dinged signifying a text.

"Hey, darlin', just letting you know I'm back at home safe and sound."

Elizabeth smiled seeing who it was from then responded. "Thanks for letting me know, honey. So glad you got home safely."

"I am too. And of course. I'm always happy to do it. I know I already said it but I had a fun afternoon with you, Beth."

"I had so much fun too! Hopefully tomorrow will be another great day."

"I'm sure it will with you by my side."

"I feel the same, Jack. I'm sure it will."

"Well, I wish we could talk longer but we should probably both hit the hay since it is a school night."

"I wish we could too but you're right. I can't wait to see you tomorrow though!"

Jack smiled, responding back with the following message and a red heart emoji. "I can't wait either! Goodnight & sweet dreams. Even though thousands of stars shine bright in the sky, you're the one and only shining star of my life. Love so much, baby."

Elizabeth's heart melted at Jack's sweet text. She took a second then replied along with two kissy face emojis at the end. "Awe, you're my whole world & the absolute sweetest guy. Goodnight & sweet dreams to you too. Love you to the moon & back, honey."

Saturday August 20

"Good morning, Mr. Thatcher."

"Good morning, Jack." William gave Jack a friendly smile and handshake. "Would you like to come inside for a moment? Elizabeth should be down in just a few minutes."

"Sure. Thank you." Jack stepped inside the house as William closed the door. "How are you all doing?"

"We're all doing great. How are you?"

"I'm doing well. Thank you for asking."

"Of course. I'm sure you're excited to spend the day with Elizabeth."

"Yes, sir. Unfortunately, it won't be the whole day since I have to work this morning but I'm happy for the time I will get to spend with her."

"That's completely understandable, Jack. I'm sure y'all will have fun."

"I'm sure we will. We always enjoy our time together."

There was a short bout of silence before Grace spoke up. "So, Jack. How are things at the Mercantile Deli?"

"Things are great. I really enjoy it. And everyone is so easy to work with, especially Mrs. Stanton. Thank you, Mrs. Thatcher."

"Of course. I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying it. The Stantons are wonderful people."

"I agree."

A few seconds later, Elizabeth walked in the room and greeted Jack with a hug and kiss on the cheek as her parents stood by smiling at the sweet interaction. "Good morning, honey."

Jack sweetly kissed her cheek while wrapping an arm around her waist. "Good morning, darlin'. You ready to go? We don't want to miss what I'm sure will be a beautiful Franklin sunrise."

"No, we definitely don't. I'm ready whenever you are."

With that, Jack and Elizabeth said their goodbyes to her parents before heading out.

Once they arrived at the Natchez Trace Parkway, they parked the car then went to sit down on the bench in the observation area to watch the sunrise.

As they held hands with fingers intertwined, Elizabeth spoke up. "Are you ready for work this morning?"

Jack smiled and nodded. "I am but," He looked at Elizabeth sweetly. "I'd much rather be spending time with you." He took a brief pause. "I'm sorry I have to spend Saturday mornings working. If they didn't close so early, then I could work during the week instead."

"Babe, you don't have to apologize. I completely understand. I'd love to spend the whole day with you, but I'll be ok till you get off work. I'm just gonna hang with some of the girls. "

"Thank you for understanding, honey. I'm sure we'll have much more time to spend together once we graduate and don't have to work on only the weekends."

"Of course. And I know we will. It will be wonderful."

"I couldn't agree more, Beth." He momentarily paused. "Are you excited for your day with the girls?"

Elizabeth responded with a friendly nod. "I am. It's always fun to hang out with them. I think Rosie, Lillian, Amy, Kathryn, Mackenzie, Kylie, and I are just gonna go shopping then have lunch at Puckett's. We'd love for you to join us then if you can."

"That sounds like fun. And I'd love to if I can. Clara, Faith, Tyler, and Edward will also be there this morning so maybe Abigail will let me get off a little early."

"I hope so but if you can't, don't worry about it, babe." She took his hand and sweetly smiled at him. "We'll understand."

"Thanks, darlin'." He came up with an idea to share. "I was just thinking. When I get off work, how about you and me going on a trail ride at River Circle Farm then hanging out at your house?"

"That sounds like a wonderful idea. I'd love to, babe. I'll have to make sure it's alright with Amy but I'm sure it won't be a problem. And I'm sure my parents won't mind you coming over either."

"That's fine. Just let me know. I can't wait, darlin'."

"I can't wait, either." She suddenly noticed the beautiful sunrise. "Wow, Jack. Look. Isn't that the most beautiful sunrise you've ever seen?"

"It definitely is but." He fixed his eyes on his Elizabeth. "You're the most beautiful girl I'll ever see."

"Jack, my love. You're the sweetest, most handsome guy I'll ever see."

"Thank you, darlin'. It always warms my heart to know you feel that way."

With that, they shared a sweet, tender kiss, continued talking for a few minutes and then headed to High Brow Coffee & Tea for breakfast.

Upon arrival, they were greeted by their friend and local photographer, Joey Barnes. "Hi Jack and Elizabeth. How are y'all today?"

"Elizabeth and I are doing well. Just enjoying senior year and spending as much time together as possible. How are you?"

"That's so great to hear. I'm doing well too. I've just been busy with my job here and the photography business. I love it though."

Elizabeth chimed in. "We're so happy you're doing well."

There was a short pause in the conversation before Joey spoke up again. "Jack, would you and Elizabeth like your usual?"

Jack smiled. "No, I think we're gonna change it up a little today. I'll have avocado toast and an iced latte." He looked at his girl. "What would you like, babe?"

Elizabeth knew exactly what she wanted and quickly gave Joey her order. "Joey, may I have an order of the Banana Peanut Butter Toast & a 'Creamy Beige'."?

"Sure. Coming right up." She briefly paused. "And your friend, Michael is here today if you'd like to see him."

Elizabeth immediately responded. "We'd love to. Thanks for letting us know."

"Of course." She called out to their friend who was busy helping Lou in the back. "Michael. Jack and Elizabeth are here if you'd like to say hi."

"Yes, I would." Michael walked back up to the front and greeted his friends. "Hey y'all! It's great to see you. You having a good day?"

Jack was the one to chime in. "It's good to see you too, man. We definitely are. How about you?"

"It's been pretty good so far. Can't complain. Thank you. Glad you're both doing well too."

A few seconds later, Joey politely interjected. "Michael, do you mind making one order of avocado toast and an iced latte for Jack? While you're doing that, I'll make Elizabeth's."

"Not at all. It'll be just a few minutes, Jack."

"That's completely alright. There's no rush."

A few minutes later, the couple was sitting down at a table enjoying their breakfast.

Soon after finishing their breakfast, they spent ten minutes talking to Joey, Michael, and Lou before heading out, so Jack could drop Elizabeth off at Rosie's house on the way to work.

Once they arrived, Elizabeth let Rosie know then continued talking to Jack for a few minutes before saying goodbye. "Bye, Jack." She kissed his cheek. "Have a good day at work and be safe."

"Bye, Beth. Thank you. And I will. Have fun with the girls."

"Thanks. I'm sure I will. I'll miss you though."

"I'll miss you too, but I can't wait to see you later."

She gave her man a deep loving gaze. "I can't wait either. I love you, sweetheart."

Jack kissed her lips sweetly then gazed back in her eyes lovingly "I love you more, baby."

30 minutes later, Jack was at work while Elizabeth, Lillian, Amy, Kathryn Willis, Mackenzie Crews, and Kylie Higgins were hanging out with Rosie at her house.

While at Rosie's, the girls hung out in the entertainment room watching a few episodes of Gilmore Girls and playing a classic game of Trivial Pursuit.

After finishing the two episodes and game, Kathryn spoke. "That was so fun ladies! Great job on the win Rosie! You definitely know your TV and movies."

With everyone else in agreement to Kathryn's statement, Rosie responded. "Thank y'all! I'd like to think so since I love the theatre and acting."

Elizabeth chimed in. "You definitely do. Is that what you want your major in college to be?"

"I'm thinking about it, but I also love event planning especially when it comes to weddings. I haven't decided yet."

Kylie joined in the conversation. "That's awesome Rosie. I know whatever you choose, you'll do great. And Liz, isn't event planning what you want to do?"

"It is. I'm excited. I just hope I'll get into a school with a great event planning program."

Mackenzie immediately gave her friend some encouragement. "I'm sure you will. Any school would be lucky to have you. Isn't that right ladies?"

Rosie, Lillian, Amy, Kathryn, and Kylie agreed in unison. "Right."

"Thank y'all so much. It means a lot." Elizabeth directed her next question towards Lillian, Amy, Kathryn, Mackenzie, and Kylie. "So, besides Rosie and I, have any of you decided what you want to do?"

Kathryn, Mackenzie, and Kylie all mentioned how they're not sure yet leaving Lillian and Amy a chance to respond.

Lillian went first. "Well, Grace and I love photography and have always dreamed about running our own photography business together so probably that. I know SCAD has an amazing program, so I know we'll definitely apply there."

Amy was next. "As all you ladies probably know already, I love horses, so I think I've decided on an Animal science degree then coming back here to be a trainer and help my mom run our business for rescue horses at the farm. What I haven't decided is where I want to apply."

Kylie didn't hesitate in her response. "Wow! That all sounds amazing. Lillian, I have no doubt you and Grace will be accepted to SCAD and become great photographers. Amy, I definitely know you'll find the perfect school then come back here and be an awesome trainer."

The other girls echoed Kylie's sentiments with Lillian and Amy thanked them before Elizabeth shared what was on her mind. "Amy. Jack and I were talking this morning and wanted to know if it'd be alright for us to come over to the farm later today for a trail ride?"

"Of course. I'm not sure if Lou will be there since she's spending the day with Peter, Katie, and Georgie but I know that my mom, dad, and especially grandpa would love to see you. Whenever y'all want to come over is ok."

"Thanks, Amy. It'll probably be sometime after lunch but we're looking forward to it."

"Of course, Elizabeth. You and Jack are welcome at the farm anytime. And speaking of Jack, how are things going with you two?"

Elizabeth's face lit up. "Things are great. This morning he actually came to pick me up early, so we could watch the sunrise from the Natchez Trace Parkway then get breakfast together before he had to go to work."

"Awe, watching the sunrise sounds so romantic."

"It definitely was. Jack is just the sweetest guy and I'm so lucky to call him mine."

"I know he feels the same way about you. I can see it in his eyes."

"I agree with Amy. I can see it too. Y'all are just the cutest couple. And is he gonna join us for lunch later?"

"Thanks, Mackenzie. He's said he's definitely gonna try."

"That's wonderful! I know we'd all love to see him." She came up with an idea after briefly looking at her watch. "You know, I think the shops downtown are opening. What do y'all say, we head out and do a little shopping then get lunch? Maybe at Puckett's?"

Rosie was the first to respond echoing everyone else's thoughts. "We're all in. Just let me tell my parents we're leaving."

Ten minutes later, the girls left Rosie's house and headed for Downtown Franklin to do some shopping. Their stops included Bound Booksellers owned by Hope McCrea, White's Mercantile owned by Ned & Katie Yost, Living Franklin, Anthropologie, and Jondie.

By the time they finished shopping, they were getting hungry, so they made their way to Puckett's Grocery for lunch. Once they arrived and were seated at a table by their friend and classmate, Chris McClendon, Elizabeth took a moment to text Jack and let him know where they were and asked if he could join them. He quickly responded saying that he had just gotten off work and would definitely be there very soon which made Elizabeth very happy.

During lunch and in between one of their conversations, the owner & general manager, Jed Campbell who also happened to be Lillian, Amy, and Kylie's 20th Century History teacher came by to say hello.

They had been talking for about ten minutes when Jed was quickly pulled away by a phone call from one of the restaurant's distributors.

The enjoyable lunch soon came to an end as the eight friends said their goodbyes and headed their separate ways except for Jack and Elizabeth since they'd be spending the rest of their day together.

The first thing on the agenda for the afternoon was a trail ride at River Circle Farm.

Upon arrival, they were greeted by Lou and Amy's grandfather, Jack Bartlett who was one of the owners of River Circle Farm. "Hi, Jack! Hi Elizabeth! How are y'all today?"

Shaking Jack's hand, Jack was the one to respond. "Hi Mr. Bartlett. We're doing great! How are you?"

"I'm doing well. It's been a wonderful day out here on the farm, so I can't complain."

Elizabeth was next to respond. "We're so happy to hear you're doing well."

The three were soon joined by Lou and Amy's mother and father, Tim and Marion Fleming, then continued chatting for fifteen minutes. After the conversation ended, Jack and Elizabeth were led to the barn by Marion, so they could prepare for their trail ride.

As the couple began their ride, they were happy they were able to ride the same beautiful horses they had in the past with Jack on Sergeant and Elizabeth on Scooter.

At one point, Jack briefly looked at his girl smiling. "Beth, I might have already said this, but you are such a natural at this horseback riding."

"You have but I don't mind hearing it again. Thank you, sweetheart. I've always loved horses and horseback riding. It's always so much fun."

"I can't argue with you there. It definitely is especially when we do it together."

"That's so true, honey." She quickly thought of an idea as she briefly glanced at Jack with a smile. "Jack. I know it'll probably be a while before this happens but if and when we decide to get married, what do you think about us buying these beautiful horses?"

"That would be awesome. We should definitely do it." Jack briefly stopped just thinking about a word Elizabeth used. "Darlin',what do you mean 'if'? We may be only 17 but I know in my heart you're the only girl for me forever."

Elizabeth looked at him with the sweetest smile. "Awe, Jack. I feel the same. You're my one and only forever. You just make me so happy."

With them in very close proximity to each other, they leaned over while sitting in the saddle on Sergeant and Scooter and holding the reins to share a sweet kiss on the lips. "You make me even happier, babe." He came up with a question then continued. "I was just thinking. What makes you the happiest about our relationship?"

Elizabeth thought it over for a minute. "Wow! That's a tough question because there are so many things that make me happy about it. The three that really stick out though are how we always keep God in the center, how we show our love for each other, and how supportive we are of each other in the good and bad times. What about you, sweetheart?"

"I'd have to say the same exact thing, babe. There's so many things that make me happy about it but those are my top 3. There's truly no one else like you in this world and I'm so lucky you're mine."

"Jack Thornton. You're truly the sweetest guy and so very special to me. I'm so lucky to have you." She briefly stopped because of being in awe of the beautiful surroundings. "This view is amazing and so gorgeous. I just love living in the country. Don't you agree and feel the same, sweetheart?"

"I definitely do. I can't imagine living anywhere else. And the view is amazing and beautiful but so are you. I know I told you that earlier, but I just can't help it."

"Jack, my love. I don't mind hearing it. You're even more amazing and oh so handsome."

They spent 30 more minutes at the farm horseback riding and talking to Lou and Amy's family before thanking them, saying their goodbyes, and heading to Elizabeth's house to hang out for the rest of the day.

After talking to William, Grace, and Julie, the couple went upstairs to the entertainment room to snuggle on the sofa, talk, and play a few rounds of Scrabble before being joined by Julie.

"Hey, Elizabeth. Hey, Jack." Julie sat down next to her sister on the sofa. "What are y'all up to?"

"Well." Elizabeth glanced at Jack and smiled. "We just finished playing a few rounds of Scrabble."

"That sounds like fun. Who won?

A look of disappointment came across Elizabeth's face. "Not me. Jack here won all three rounds." She slightly rolled her eyes.

Jack sweetly looked at Elizabeth and decided to tease her slightly. "I guess I'm just too good to beat."

Elizabeth gently swatted Jack's arm. "Jack Thornton! We'll just see about that next time we play."

He slightly chuckled. "Alright. Alright." He looked in his girl's eyes lovingly and apologetically. "I'm sorry, Beth. You know I love you, babe. You did a great job."

"Thanks, sweetheart. I know you do." She kissed his lips making Julie smile at the cute interaction. "I love you too. I think you did a great job."

"Thanks, Beth." He briefly paused thinking of an idea. "Julie, Elizabeth and I were just getting ready to play a few rounds of Disney SceneIt. Would you like to join us?"

Julie's face lit up. "I would LOVE to but are you sure it's ok? I don't want to impose on any time y'all were going to spend together alone."

Elizabeth immediately reassured her sister. "Of course. We'd love to have you join."

"Ok. Thank you for including me. I know we'll have a great time."

Elizabeth looked from Julie to Jack smiling. "I think we will too."

The next hour and a half later went by quickly as they won one game each then spent fifteen minutes chatting before Julie decided to hang out in her room leaving Jack and Elizabeth to enjoy more time together as a couple.

With Jack and Elizabeth wrapped in each other's arms, they were thoroughly enjoying the closeness between them as they talked and listened to music from one of Jack's Spotify playlists.

Around forty-five minutes and 11 songs later, "I Swear" by John Michael Montgomery started playing, causing Jack to stand up from his seat on the sofa.

"Jack, where are you going? I was enjoying all the snuggle time."

Jack smiled at Elizabeth. "I'm not going anywhere, Beth. I was enjoying the snuggle time with my girl too, but I'd like to do something else." He offered his hand to Elizabeth. "Dance with me?"

Elizabeth took his hand and stood up as she locked her eyes on his. "I'd love to, my sweet boy." She wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him close. "You are so handsome."

He wrapped his arms around her waist gently pulling her even closer. "You're so beautiful. I'm so happy you accepted my offer to dance."

"Of course. I love dancing with you and there's no way I would've said no."

"I love dancing with you too, babe. It's one of my favorite things." Before long, the current song ended and the next started playing. The loving gazes continued as they stayed wrapped in each other's arms and Jack began singing the classic tune by Elvis Presley, 'Can't Help Falling in Love'.

With each word of the song sung, Elizabeth's heart melted at Jack's sweet voice and the deep look of love he was giving her. "I love this song. And hearing your sweet voice singing it to me makes it even better. You're so talented, honey."

"Thank you, baby. You're so sweet." He sweetly kissed her lips then continued as he ran his hands gently up and down her sides. "I love this song too and singing to you. You know what or better yet, who I love more though?"

Elizabeth played along even though she knew the answer. "Who's that, my darling?"

The affections between them continued. "It's you, Beth. With each passing day, I just can't help falling in love with you more and more. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me and I can't imagine my life without you."

"Oh, Jack. I feel the same exact way. You're my life and I'll love you with my whole heart forever."

With that said, the singing and dancing continued for another 15 minutes until they decided to sit down back down on the sofa to talk even more before dinner.

Later that evening, Jack, Elizabeth, Julie, William, and Grace all sat down in the family room to watch a movie together which happened to be 'National Treasure' on this particular night. Like always, everyone enjoyed it and by the time it was over, it was already 9:30 which made Jack realize he should head home.

Once he gathered his belongings, said goodnight to Julie, William, and Grace and thanked them for a wonderful dinner, he and Elizabeth walked out on the front porch to chat a few more minutes and say their own goodnights with sweet, tender kisses.

After pulling out of the driveway and onto the street, Jack briefly stopped the car in front of her house to wave and blow Elizabeth a kiss which he received in return before driving away to head home and get ready for church the next morning.

August 26

It was an exciting and big day for Jack, Elizabeth, and some of their friends at Battle Ground Academy. For the seniors on the football team and cheerleading squad, it was the last first home game of their high school career. With Jack and Tom in their football jerseys and a pair of khaki pants and Elizabeth and Julie in their cheerleading uniform and jacket, they ate breakfast, said goodbye to their parents, then headed out the door to school.

Once the siblings arrived at Battle Ground Academy, Tom and Julie headed to their locker in the sophomore section of the main building while Jack and Elizabeth headed to their locker in the senior section which just happened to be right next to each other.

Kissing him on the cheek, Elizabeth greeted her boyfriend. "Well, good morning sweetheart."

"Good morning, darlin'." He returned the kiss but, on her lips, instead of the cheek. "How are you?"

"I'm doing great and so happy to see you."

"The same goes for me. So happy to see you." He gently leaned her against her locker and rested his hands on her hips as he looked at her sweetly. "You know." He briefly paused. "You always look amazing but seeing you in your cheer uniform," He shook his head in amazement. "It makes my heart melt. You're seriously adorable and I just can't keep my eyes off of you."

She smiled back at him while resting her hands on his arms. "Jack Thornton. You are too sweet and even more adorable, especially in your football jersey. I'll never be able to keep my eyes off of you."

"My sweet Beth." He kept his hands resting on her hips while gently rubbing his nose against hers. "I love you so much, baby girl."

Elizabeth gave him an Eskimo kiss right back. "I love you even more, honey."

Forgetting where they were momentarily, Elizabeth planted a passionate kiss on Jack's lips which he returned with just as much passion before they were brought back to reality by one of their teachers walking by. "Jack. Elizabeth." Smiling at the sweet moment but wanting to warn them of the time and school PDA rule, she continued. "Time for class."

The couple looked at their teacher and smiled as Elizabeth greeted her. "Good morning, Mrs. Graves."

Once Mrs. Graves walked away, Jack turned to face Elizabeth with them sharing a loving look and chuckle as they heard the first bell ring and Jack said what they both knew. "Well, I guess that's our cue."

"It definitely is. We don't want to be late for Mrs. Graves AP literature class."

"We certainly don't, Beth."

They shared one more sweet but quick kiss on the lips, grabbed their books from their locker, then took the very short walk to Mrs. Graves' classroom.

After the first five classes, Jack and Elizabeth made a quick stop at their lockers before deciding to have lunch at the Mercantile Deli with Lee, Rosie, Ty, Amy, Brett Owens, and Lindsey Morris.

At lunch, the six friends chatted with Noah and Abigail then among themselves.

After a brief conversation about topics such as their classes and the first football game coming up that evening, they began talking about other things with Ty speaking up first. "Can y'all believe we're seniors this year?"

With everyone in agreement, Jack spoke up for the group. "I know I'm not alone in saying, definitely not. It seems like just yesterday we were starting kindergarten together and now we're all about to graduate high school in a few months." Jack shook his head in amazement. "So crazy how time flies."

Elizabeth looked at her boyfriend and smiled. "It is for sure. From the Friday night football games to homecoming, prom, and everything in between, I think we should enjoy every moment together we can before we graduate and have to go our separate ways for college."

Rosie chimed in. "I definitely agree we should but who knows. We could all end up going to college together too. And no matter what, I know we'll always keep in touch."

Lindsey shared her thoughts. "That is so true, Rosie. Going off to college won't change the friendship we all have. I haven't decided on where I'm going yet but I have started looking at different options."

Amy was next to enter the conversation. "I agree wholeheartedly, Lindsey. All of us will always be friends. And that's awesome you've started looking. Where are you thinking?"

"Well, besides University of Tennessee, I've looked at University of Georgia, University of South Carolina, Belmont, and Baylor. What about y'all?"

Amy gave her answer. "I'm not exactly sure yet but I've heard University of Florida has a great Animal science degree."

Considering she and Jack have looked at Florida, Elizabeth excitedly responded to what Amy said. "Wow! Really?! Jack and I are still trying to decide as well but we've both looked at Florida as a big possibility. Maybe we'll end up going to college together."

"That would be amazing! I know Ty here is thinking about going there too for Veterinary medicine."

"I totally agree. And that would be great, Ty. I've heard good things about their veterinary degree."

"Thanks, Elizabeth. I hope it works out."

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "Of course. I'm sure it will." She briefly paused. "What about you, Lee, Rosie, and Brett?"

Lee answered first. "I'm going to apply to as many schools as I can, but I'm pretty set on University of Florida and," He glanced at Rosie with an understanding look. "I'm pretty sure Rosie has told me she is too."

Brett shared his thoughts. "Like Lee, I'm going to apply to a lot of schools, but I've always dreamed of going to Baylor."

Jack was thrilled by Lee's response and chimed in. "Now, that is just the best news today. Hoping it will work out for the six of us to be in Florida together." He continued to be supportive of what Brett said. "That's awesome, man. I've heard such great things about Baylor."

Brett nodded graciously. "Thanks, Jack. I think it would be a great experience."

Not long after their conversation about college, their food was served, and they continued talking while they ate. This time was about weekend plans and memories from years past shared together.

Once they finished lunch; it was time to pay, say goodbye to Noah and Abigail, then head back to school for the last three periods of the day.

The last three periods went by quickly and before everyone knew it, the 3 O'clock bell rang, and another great school day was over.

With kickoff being at 7 PM, that only gave Jack and Elizabeth an hour and a half to spend together before having to meet with their respective teams to prepare for the football game.

They were sitting side by side at the top of the bleachers facing the football field holding each other's hand.

"Jack, do you realize that tonight is the last first home football game we will have in high school?"

" Yes. It's really kind of sad. There will be many lasts this school year, but we will do them together." He kissed her softly on the cheek.

"It is really sad and makes me emotional." She started tearing up. "I know this will be a wonderful senior year, especially with you by my side but still." She briefly paused. "We've made so many memories and friends during our time here and I'm just not ready for it to end."

He couldn't help but notice the few tears rolling down her cheeks as he kissed them away then wrapped his right arm around her shoulder gently pulling her closer to him. "My sweet Beth. I know what you mean, baby. I'm not ready for it to end either." He looked at her sweetly. "But you know what? Before long we'll be in the adult world making even more memories side by side."

"I can't wait for that, Jack."

"I can't wait either.

Elizabeth smiled at him. "So, are you ready for the game tonight?"

He made eye contact with her. "Yes, but I am a little nervous too. It's the first time we're playing Ravenwood High so I'm not really sure what to expect. I just don't want to disappoint anyone if it doesn't go our way."

She gently took his hands again and supportively responded. "Sweetheart. I totally understand but don't be nervous. The most important thing is that you do your best." She briefly paused. "No matter how the game turns out tonight, I want you to know that I'll be proud of you. In my eyes, you'll never be a disappointment. Anyone that thinks otherwise has lost their cookie."

They shared a laugh at the recent use of vocabulary. "Oh, Elizabeth. Thank you, babe. You're the sweetest and I'm so thankful for your support."

"Of course. I'll always have your back, darling."

"I have no doubt you will, and I'll always have yours." He briefly paused. "Beth. I was just thinking about weekend plans. I have to work in the morning but is there anything in particular you'd like to do after?"

"I know I can always count on you. And I can't think of anything. Maybe just a chill kinda day. As long as I'm with you, I'll be happy."

"I feel the same exact way. What about this? After work, I can come pick you up, we'll go out to lunch then just hang out at my house and go for a swim."

"That sounds wonderful. I'd love to spend the day with you at your house. I know we'll have a great time."

"We will for sure." He gently leaned his forehead and nose against hers while holding her hands. "I enjoy every moment spent with you, my beautiful girl."

"Awe." She then gave him an Eskimo kiss. "I treasure every moment with you my sweet, handsome boy." They were enjoying their time together so much that the past hour and a half had flown by and they almost lost track of time.

"Oh, my goodness. Jack. What time is it?"

Jack picked up his phone to check the time. "It's 4:25." He briefly paused before the realization sank in. "It's 4:25! We need to go."

"Yeah. I wish we could stay here longer but I don't want to be late meeting with my squad and I don't want you to be late meeting with your team."

"I wish we could too but you're right. I enjoyed the time we did have though."

"I did too. Meet you after the game?"

"Yes. For sure. See you then. Good luck tonight."

"Thank you, sweetheart. Same to you. Be safe. I'll be cheering for you from the sidelines."

"Thank you, baby. I will. Can't wait to hear your sweet voice cheering me on." He lovingly and tenderly kissed her lips. "I love you."

"I love you."

With that, they shared one more kiss then headed to meet with their respective teams to prepare for the game.

While the football team met on the field to go over different plays, the cheerleading squad met in the gym to run through different cheers and their halftime routine.

As Elizabeth walked towards her squad, she greeted them. "Hi, ladies. Hi Coach Connors. I'm sorry if I'm a minute or two late. "

Coach Connors is first to respond. "Hi, Elizabeth. It's alright. You're actually right on time."

Elizabeth smiles in relief. "That's good! I was a little worried I would be late. How are you?"

"I'm doing well. Thank you, Elizabeth."

"So glad to hear you're doing well." She addressed her squad. "And how are you all doing?"

The squad responded in unison. "We're good."

Brooke was next to respond. "How are you, Liz?"

"I'm great, Brooke. Thank you. Just happy to be with my girls getting ready for the big game."

Seeing the smile on Elizabeth's face and realizing what or better yet, who she was thinking about, Haleigh chimed in. "How's Jack?"

Elizabeth looked somewhat surprised at the question but still responded smiling. "Is it that obvious?"

Emma quickly shared her thoughts. "Girl! It's written all over your face. He's such a good guy and you are so lucky to have him. We can all tell how happy he makes you."

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "He's doing well. And he is definitely the sweetest. I mean, he constantly tells me I'm beautiful, supports me on the good and bad days, holds every door open for me, is always a gentleman, consistently makes me feel so loved, and so much more. What more could I ask for?" She briefly paused and shook her head in amazement. "I'm so lucky."

With awes coming from Coach Connors and the whole squad, Georgie couldn't help but say what was on her mind. "Well aren't y'all just the cutest?"

Carly echoed Georgie's sentiments. "I agree 100%. You guys are the cutest couple at BGA."

Elizabeth smiled again graciously. "Y'all are too sweet. Thank you." Wanting to be a good and responsible captain, she continued. "Enough of Jack and I though. Let's get this practice started and have some fun."

After a few seconds of hesitation, Rosie clapped her hands cheerily. "Let's go, ladies. Time to get going. We need to start stretching then go over the cheers, stunts, and halftime routine."

With that, the cheerleaders did their warm up stretches then began practicing all the routines for that night.

Meanwhile, back on the football field, Jack and the rest of his team were running different plays for the game. In between one of them, Jack fist bumped his teammate and friend, Nathan Grant. "Great job, man. You're gonna play a great game tonight."

"Thanks, Jack. I hope so. Are you ready for this game?"

"Yeah. I mean I don't know what to expect with our competition but I'm gonna be positive. I think we can definitely pull out a win."

"I think we can too." Seeing how Jack seemed a little distracted with a smile on his face, he continued. "You're thinking about Elizabeth, aren't you?"

"Yeah. I always want to be a good quarterback and stay focused during practice but sometimes I can't help it. She's just the most amazing girl. I'm so lucky."

Nathan placed a hand on his shoulder. "Jack. It's ok. You don't have to explain yourself. Elizabeth is awesome and such a great friend, so I don't blame you. You two make a wonderful couple. And the guys and I all think you're the best quarterback this team has ever had."

Walking over at the end of the conversation, Doug interjected. "What are we talking about?"

Nathan responded to Doug's question. "Jack was telling me how his mind was on Elizabeth before I mentioned how great a couple they are and how he's the best quarterback BGA has ever had."

"Well. I can't say I disagree with what you said, Nathan." He addressed Jack. "Jack, the team is lucky to have you as our leader. And you and Elizabeth do make a wonderful couple. How is she today?"

Jack smiled thinking about his girl again. "She's great. Amazing as always."

Noticing Jack, Nathan, and Doug briefly standing around talking, Coach Trevoy clapped his hands and calmly but firmly called them from just a few steps away. "Thornton. Grant. Burke. Back to work. Time to run this next play."

Jack was the one to respond. "Yes, sir. Sorry, Coach Trevoy."

"It's alright. Just don't let it happen again."

Within seconds, the team went on with practice until it was time to head to the locker room for the pre-game pep talk.

A few hours later, halftime was over, and it was time for the third quarter with Battle Ground Academy leading 21-0.

Just like they had the first and second quarter, the cheerleaders were strong in their support for their wildcats and continued doing what they do best.

Halfway through the quarter, the wildcats had made their way to the 10-yard line getting ready to score the next touchdown as the cheerleaders got in position. Elizabeth called the next cheer.

Blue, Gold, And White. Go. Wildcats. Go.

Blue, Gold, And White. Fight. Wildcats. Fight.

Blue, Gold, and White. Win. Wildcats. Win.

Blue, Gold, and White. Go. Fight. Win.

Go. Fight. Win.

As soon as the cheer ended, senior Michael Gleason threw the football to junior Sam Tremblay in the end zone giving the Wildcats a tremendous 28-0 lead causing the cheerleaders to celebrate with their touchdown cheer.

Do it again. Do it again. We like it. We like it.

Do it again. Do it again. We like it. We like it.

In unison, the squad then performed more generic cheers. 'Let's go, BGA' &

'Way to go, Wildcats'.

The rest of the game went by quickly as there was now only 1 minutes left in the 4th quarter with the score now 36-10, the Wildcats still leading and 15 yards away from scoring again.

Given the time, the cheerleaders got into position for the last cheer of the night, 'V-I-C-T-O-R-Y'

With 15 seconds left, Jesse got in position and threw the ball to Jack who was waiting in the end zone and very quickly caught it making the crowd and the cheerleaders erupt in cheers, especially Elizabeth. She smiled the biggest smile and shouted her own personal cheer for him as loud as she could. "Way to go, baby. Way to go."

As Jack is having his celebratory moment in the end zone from the 42-10 win, he is somehow able to hear Elizabeth's voice a few feet away over everyone else's cheers.

He quickly locked eye contact with her, blew her a kiss, then mouthed, "I love you."

Keeping her eyes on Jack, she blew him a kiss and mouthed, "I love you" right back.

This didn't go unnoticed by anyone, especially their parents and the announcer. "And there he is. Quarterback, Jack Thornton making the winning touchdown for the Wildcats and blowing a kiss to his girlfriend and captain of the cheerleading squad, Elizabeth Thatcher."

Hearing those words over the loud speaker made the whole crowd smile and erupt again in awes.

After the game and once the Wildcat athletes had finished their post-game duties, Jack and Elizabeth had met back up by the bleachers as promised.

Without even caring how sweaty Jack was, Elizabeth wrapped her arms around his waist embracing him in a loving hug. "Hey, sweetheart." She sweetly kissed his lips. "Great game. You played amazing tonight. I'm so proud of you."

"Thank you, babe. I may not have always acknowledged it, but it warmed my heart hearing your sweet voice cheering me on from the sidelines."

"Of course. There's nothing I love more than cheering on the most amazing guy who means the absolute world to me."

Jack sweetly rubbed his nose against hers giving her an Eskimo kiss. "You mean everything to me." Wondering where William, Grace, Thomas, and Charlotte were, Jack continued. "Beth, have you seen our parents?"

"No, I haven't." Looking around once more, she finally found them approaching. "Oh wait. There they are."

Once they said their hellos, William was the first to speak up addressing his middle daughter. "Elizabeth, you did a wonderful job tonight. You mother and I are very proud of you." He briefly paused. "And Jack." He shook Jack's hand. "You played an amazing game."

Charlotte chimed in next. "Thomas and I have to agree with you. You both did great tonight."

Jack responded first. "Thanks, mom, dad, and Mr. Thatcher."

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "Yes. Thanks mom, dad, and Mr. & Mrs. Thornton."

There was a short bout of silence before Charlotte shared something on her mind. "So, Jack. Lizzie. How do y'all feel about that announcement made over the loudspeaker after the game?

After everyone shared a laugh, Jack answered his mother's question with a smile. "Well. I can't say that I wasn't surprised, but I didn't mind it." He turned to look at Elizabeth lovingly. "I want everyone to know about the most amazing beautiful girl who has my heart."

Elizabeth placed a hand on her boyfriend's arm and smiled at him. "Jack. You are too sweet. If it wasn't obvious before, it sure is now and I couldn't be happier for everyone to know about the most wonderful handsome guy who means the world to me."

Jack leaned over to give Elizabeth another Eskimo kiss as their parents shared a smile at the sweet moment as Charlotte commented. "Well aren't y'all just the cutest?!"

Grace quickly interjected. "Agreed. You two make a wonderful couple and we're all so happy you have each other."

Jack looked from his mother to Elizabeth's. "Thank you." He smiled at Elizabeth. "We're so thankful to have each other."

Ten minutes later, Tom and Julie joined them as the two families continued talking about things such as weekend plans, church, and an invitation for Sunday dinner from the Thatchers to the Thorntons which was kindly and graciously accepted.

Another ten minutes went by before everyone realized it was starting to get late. With Jack and Elizabeth having their own cars, they said goodbye to their families and that they would see them at home.

Being the gentleman that he was, Jack soon walked Elizabeth to her car which just so happened to be right next to his. They stood there for about five minutes talking and sharing sweet kisses before concluding that they needed to say goodbye themselves.

With Jack gently leaning Elizabeth against the car door, he rested his hands on her hips and gazed at her lovingly in the dimly lit parking lot. "My sweet Beth. I wish we could hang out all night, but it is getting late and we should probably head home before our parents start to worry."

"I wish we could too, Jack but you're right. I can't wait to see you tomorrow though."

"I can't wait either. We're gonna have a great time as always."

"Yes, we will." Elizabeth kept her loving gaze and ran her right-hand fingers through his hair. "Call me when you get home?"

Jack rested his left hand on her cheek while keeping his right hand on her waist. "Of course. But not if you call me first."

"Oh Jack. You're so cute."

"So are you, Beth." He briefly paused and brought her right hand to his lips kissing it. "Drive safe."

Elizabeth smiled at Jack's sweet comment. "I will. And you too."

"I will." He sweetly kissed her lips. "I love you, baby."

"I love you more, sweetheart."

With that, Jack opened Elizabeth's door as she got in the car, they shared one more loving kiss, said goodbye, he got in his car, and they both headed home thinking about how grateful they were to have each other.
