"Ally? Open the door!" Hayley shouted as she banged on the door to her mom's apartment.
"Move!" Jay pushed her aside giving the door a swift kick.
Hayley knew where Ally would be hiding. Hayley had taught her where to hide, in the wardrobe.
Hayley's life was hard growing up, her Dad an alcoholic, he abused her Mom and her and her siblings, he had pushed the family apart. Her brothers took their mom and made sure she was safe when Hayley joined the Police Academy. After a break in at their family restaurant in Greek Town, Hayley had been determined to be a bad ass police officer like the cop who had helped her. The men had been armed, one had shoved her gun in Hayley's face and took her out back, in the kitchen he made her kneel down as he proceeded to point a gun to her head, as he was about to unzip his pants, a shot rang out and Hank had shot him in the head. Hayley was 12. She had been given his card and kept in touch all through her life. Hank and Trudy were at her Graduation, nobody else showed up. When Hayley had given birth four years ago, her mom said she would help with Alison. Ally was a ray of sunshine. Hayley had a one-night stand with a guy in a bar and he had gone when she woke up. The only thing that kept getting in the way was Hayley's dad, he would work his way into her mom's mind every few months. Then Hayley would be left to look after Ally alone. Then her mom would come crashing back into her life, wreaking havoc.
Ally was in the wardrobe. Pulling her out and grabbing her bag from by the door Hayley carried her to her car.
"Hayley, Hank wants us to go back to the district!"
"I can't, I have Ally to deal with."
"Just come back and let's talk this through."
"OK, I'll meet you there. I need to get her some dinner first. Tell Hank I'll see him in a bit."
"How about you just come back to the district and we sort dinner out there, we have a canteen food is amazing, and if….. if I don't bring you back Hank will kill me."
Hayley hesitated, she buckled Ally in to her seat and looked at Jay. He was leaning on the roof of her car, his scent blew around her, making her weak at the knees. Shutting the door, she sighed, looked up to Jay and lost herself in his eyes. In that moment she knew she would walk through fire for him, she had known it the first time she saw him in the club, but knew she was undercover and it was against the rules to forge a deep relationship when UC.
Shaking her head, she drew in a deep breath, nodding her head agreeing to follow him back to the 21st district.
Ally chatted away in the back seat. As Hayley parked up, she smiled at her. It's time Hayley put her first maybe her mom was right, she needed a different job. A stable job.
"you need me to take that" Jay offered to take the bag from Hayley.
"Thanks" they made it upstairs to inelegance and Hayley tucked Ally's head into her shoulder as she spotted the board with the crime scene photos on. Kim quickly turning it over.
"Ally" Hank shouted as he came out of his office. She wriggled her way out of Hayley arms and down to room to Hank.
"Pops!" she squealed as she ran.
All of inelegance looked confused, Hayley looked at them all looking at her.
"Can you fill everyone in Hayley, I'll sort her dinner out."
"OK! Hi I'm Detective Hayley Upstead, I currently work with the Gang unit. And have been undercover for a month, as Kelly. We have been so close to busting Davies and then we lose the lead. It's like they have… a mole. Crap. I knew it."
"You think there is a mole in your unit?" Kim asked.
"Who is in your unit? Who do you think it is?" Adam asked.
Hayley shook her head.
"We all worked so hard on this. I give in. I'm going to have to hand this over to someone else. Ally needs me and you guys can do a much better job with this crap than we have been able too. I'm sure Hank will back you up." She walked into the break room to Hank.
"I need to go, I'm sure you can rescue this case. I give in with all of it. Come on Ally let's go."
"Bye Pop's"
"Bye beautiful girl. Hayley, just take a break and come back in on Monday, I'll talk to Andrew get you moved over for a few weeks."
"What do I do with Ally? Leave her on her own, I can't I'm sorry." She walked through intelligence and out of the door. She got into her car and drove home.
Ally was asleep, Hayley had showered and was in the living room glass of wine in one hand and TV remote in the other. Tears fell down her face, she had nobody to lean on. Sure, there was Hank and Trudy, but they couldn't look after Ally, she was in school till 3pm, then she was normally with Hayley's mom, The doorbell rang bringing her from her thoughts. Jumping up she ran to the door before whoever it was rang again and woke Ally up.
The green eyes on the other side of the door were not what she expected. He had pizza and beer.
"Jay? How do you? What are you? Trudy or Hank?" she asked as she stood to the side.
"Hank, but don't tell him I told you, he will kill me." Jay laughed as he followed her into the living room. The baby monitor on the table flickered as Ally shifted in her bed.
"Look, you seemed stressed and I don't want you giving up on this case. You seem to have worked hard on it. You should see it through. Here eat and drink. We can forget about it tonight and on Monday we start again."
"WE?" She questioned "I quit remember? I have written my resignation and I have my badge and gun ready to hand in on Monday Morning. It's time for me to think about Ally"
"Do you really need me to remind you that you have Hank and Platt on your case?"
"What about Ally? I don't have anyone to help me out with her anymore. I can't afford a nanny. I can't take her to work with me, and it's not even fair for me to expect her to be brought up by someone else whilst I work ridiculous hours. Surely it will be better for her if I quit?"
"OK, what would you do? Where would you work?"
Thinking about the question Hayley settled down into the sofa.
"I would be a pizza delivery girl, ha ha, they could pay me in pizza, Deep dish only though!" she laughed as she spoke.
"So as a kid, you dreamed of being a Pizza delivery girl?"
"Nope, from the age of 5 I was going to be a waitress at my dad's restaurant. Then one day when I was 12, we were held at gun point. Trudy and Hank saved my life, the guys beat my dad, broke his eye socket. One of them took me out back forced me to kneel on the floor put a gun to my head and told me to open my mouth. I squeezed my eyes shut, there was a shot and I was convinced I was dead. Hank had come in from the back and killed him. Trudy looked after me at the precinct and I watched her and was in awe of her. She had control of the room and nobody messed with her. I knew there and then I was going to be a cop and help people. My dad went ballistic, 'No daughter of mine is going to go to work in a police station. It's a man's world. You will stay home and look after the family.' He had always been a bad drunk. I got into the academy of my own back. I didn't even tell Trudy or Hank. My brother took my mom and made sure she was safe. Nobody came to my graduation from my family. Hank and Trudy did they were so proud. Yet my blood just ignored me. When I found out about Ally, I went on to desk duty, I hated it. I was back on the beat as soon as the Dr said I could be. My Mom came and wanted to help so I let her. She has this habit of being nice for a few months then goes all crazy. I'm sure she is with my dad again."
"seriously you think she would have gone back?"
"Yeah, she loves him. It's like she is addicted to the misery. Only thing is my Dad won't have anything to do with me or Ally. So, she leaves me high and dry, until she gets another beating."
Silence envelopes the room.
"I'm so sorry I can't believe I just told you all that! I'm so sorry!"
"Hey, it's OK, listen I have a fantastic friend who looks after Owen after school. She is reasonably priced and is used to long and odd hours."
"Jay no I can't afford it!"
"She is cheap. I promise you will be surprised! We are normally home by 7 at night and she will be watching her for 4 hours. A day for a week or two. I'm sure Natalie will help."
"No, I can't ask her to do that. I don't know her. She doesn't know me, why are you trying so hard Jay?"
"Look, you are good at your job, 'Hayley sighed' don't let your mom and dad come back into your life and ruin this for you! Did you also know the pay in intelligence is better than gangs, right? Like three times better!"
"OK so I stay finish this job then leave and become a pizza delivery gal" Hayley's smile lit up the room, her laugh was like bells that tinkled softly in the wind. It did something to him. He'd never felt anything like this before. A feeling deep in his stomach, that even though it had shocked him, it calmed him, he had only really met her that day but he felt like he had known her all his life.
