Here it is! Chapter 2 Sorry it took a while; uni has my brain pretty fried, but I hope you like the latest chapter. Thank you so much for all the comments and reviews, they make me so happy to read. Also, I do apologise, I thought I would wrap this story up in this chapter, but I think it will take one more. I don't like to make my chapters too long and this seemed like a good stopping point. So there will be one more concluding chapter.
I do not own Shadowhunters.
Chapter 2
Jace hurried out of the apartment and made his way to the institute on his own. He didn't feel like having Magnus taking him in today, he needed time to think. Magnus and Alec hadn't liked his scent, well, that was that then. The tiny bit of hope that he had been holding onto was slowly evaporating as it sunk in… Magnus and Alec didn't like his scent. He felt like crying, but realistically he knew that his chances with the alpha couple had been slim. Now he could begin to move on, find someone that might make him happy and love him for him.
He didn't notice the heads that turned as he walked, caught up in his own thoughts as he was.
He arrived at the institute and headed for the training rooms, hoping to work off a bit of this disappointment that felt like it was eating him alive. Now, he began noticing the heads turning his way as he walked by. He was suddenly gripped with panic, what if he smelt bad to everyone!? What if no alpha wanted to be with him because they all found his scent unappealing? He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He knew he was being ridiculous but a small part of himself couldn't help but believe that he was undesirable.
He felt a tap on his shoulder, bringing him out of his spiralling thoughts. He turned to see Clary standing there smiling at him.
"Jace," she said. "Feel like sparing?"
Jace nodded, "hell yeah" he answered with a grin.
As they fought Jace felt all his worries melt away, his mind cleared, he no longer felt the eyes on him. It was just what he needed. He wiped the sweat from his brow as they finally stopped, he was aching all over and it felt great.
Clary sat on the mat beside him panting. Jace smelt her rose and cinnamon scent and smiled, it was soothing in a homey sort of way. He was still getting used to everyone's scents and he didn't realise he was being quite so obvious until Clary bumped his shoulder and laughed.
"Like what you smell huh?"
Jace blushed crimson, it wasn't really appropriate to just go around sniffing people.
"Sorry, still getting used to all this."
"You're fine. I wouldn't go around just sniffing anyone though, some may take it as an invitation. Your scent is quite intoxicating." Clary explained lightly.
"You can smell me?" Jace asked even though he knew his scent was coming through. "Do- do I smell OK?"
Clary turned to look at him, taking in his tense shoulders and jaw.
"You smell amazing. Like green apples and honey" she answered with complete sincerity.
Jace rubbed the back of his neck, "it's not too strong or something?"
"Oh no, it's definitely strong, but in a good way. People haven't been able to scent you before Jace, but they'll get used to it soon enough. Once the shock of you being an omega wears off, I mean" Clary said with a chuckle.
Jace just rolled his eyes. "I better go have a shower and then get ready for patrol, seeya later Clary."
Once the high of the fight wore off Jace began to notice the looks again, could feel the eyes upon him.
The hot water helped to sooth his aching muscles and he felt more ready to head out on patrol with Isabelle. He dried and dressed quickly but was stopped before he could leave by a hunter he'd never spoken to before.
"Jace, right?"
"Ah, yeah, and you are?" Jace answered watching the other hunter warily.
"Austin. I just saw you training with Clary, you have some amazing skill. I was wondering if you wanted to train with me tomorrow?"
Jace's troubled expression cleared.
"Oh, sure, that'd be great. It's always good to train with new people, keeps me on my toes" Jace said with a grin.
"Great, I'll see you tomorrow. Goodluck out there" Austin said as he reached out and gripped Jace's shoulder firmly for a few seconds before smiling and walking away.
Jace couldn't help but grin a little. Look at him making friends, Alec would be so proud.
He hurried along, now in a rush to meet up with Izzy, she hated it when he kept her waiting. He heard footsteps beside him and glanced over to see Underhill hurrying along as well.
"Running late as well?" Jace asked with a raised eyebrow.
Andrew rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, "yeah, Isabelle won't be happy with us."
Jace got a whiff of what smelt like a beach breeze on a summer day, just as he felt a pair of hands grip his hips firmly and push him through the waiting Shadowhunters crowding the entry to the room. He glanced back to find it was Andrew holding him.
Jace couldn't help the shiver that ran through his body at the feeling of being held, even if it was just as a means to get through the crowd. Andrew's hands fell away as they approached Izzy.
"I know, I know we're late!" Jace exclaimed, trying to head off whatever tirade she was about to start.
"Sorry" Andrew put in helpfully.
Izzy let out a huff. "Fine, whatever, let's just go."
Once again Jace found himself trying to make his way quietly into the apartment, the difference being that it wasn't very late this time. Their patrol had turned sour when they were attacked by two demons. They had put up a good fight but Jace had still managed to get injured. Though he felt like it perhaps could have been avoided if the alphas in the group hadn't kept trying to protect him so much. He was beginning to understand why not many omegas went out on active patrol. He had ended up with a bruised and battered leg and side as well as several jagged cuts that had managed to be healed. He knew he would have to rest it for a few days though.
Two of the alphas, Underhill and Taylor had fussed over him exhaustively while he was being healed, cooing and patting his head and Jace was embarrassed by just how much he enjoyed it. He had even started purring at one point, causing them to get even more worked up trying to please him. They had insisted on taking him home but Jace had thankfully convinced them not to actually come up to his apartment. He knew there was no way to hide what happened from Alec, Isabelle would already be back at the institute filing a report, but still, he didn't want to worry either of his house mates.
He tried to hobble quietly through the lounge to his room, when he heard Magnus call out.
"Jace, is that you?"
"Yep! Just going to have a shower" he called back, trying to quicken his pace.
"Jace? What's wrong?" Magnus asked, sticking his head around the corner to the kitchen.
"Wh- nothing, just a long day is all. I'm going to shower, dinner smells amazing."
Magnus didn't look convinced but allowed Jace to walk away, noting the slowness of his step.
It was less than five minutes later that Magnus got a msg from Alec asking for a portal home.
Alec burst into the room, a ball of anger and worry.
"Where is he?" he growled.
"I assume, you're talking about our lovely little omega?" Magnus asked lightly.
Alec ran his fingers through his hair wearily.
"I am, he got hurt while out on patrol today."
Magnus' eyes darkened.
"He's in the shower, tell me what happened."
"Apparently they got ambushed while out on patrol, the alphas went into a frenzy trying to protect him, but he still managed to get hurt" Alec explained with a sigh. "I'm going to have to talk to him about only going on patrol with beta's from now on and more reconnaissance missions then the more dangerous level missions." Alec sighed again. "He is going to hate me. I don't want to do it, but the more dangerous missions need alphas on them but they can't fight effectively if there is an omega in danger around them."
Magnus rubbed his back in comfort.
"Isabelle said he was wafting distressed omega scent all over the place. I know he wouldn't have meant to do it, but it puts everyone in danger."
"He will understand" Magnus began, but stopped at Alec's raised eyebrow. "Eventually" Magnus amended with a small smirk, causing Alec to groan.
"He did seem to be in pain when he got home" Magnus said with a frown, causing Alec to straighten in concern.
"I've arranged for him to have a few days off to rest, it might be best if one of us stays home with him to make sure he actually does it."
Before Magnus could respond Jace hobbled into the lounge, giving both alphas a tight smile.
"Alec" Jace said in greeting, as he tried to sit casually on the couch, he was fooling no one. "I assume Izzy told you what happened?"
"She did" Alec said gravely, "and we need to talk." Well, there was no time like the present.
Jace let out a sigh, "I figured."
"I'm sorry but it's institute policy that omegas don't go out on patrol or on missions with alphas." Alec hesitated, waiting for the blow up, when none came, he continued. "You can still patrol, but you will only be with betas from now on, you will also be unable to go on any high-level missions."
Magnus rubbed his mates back in comfort, he knew how bad Alec felt doing this to Jace.
Jace, however, shocked them both.
"I thought as much" the blonde said evenly, and Alec felt his mouth drop open in shock.
"You thought as much. That's all you have to say?" Alec asked incredulously.
Jace just rolled his eyes. "Honestly, Alec, I'm not stupid, I know how things work at the institute. Besides, I was there today, I saw how the alphas reacted, we were lucky no one died."
Magnus and Alec were honestly surprised by how well Jace was taking this. A tantrum of epic proportions had been expected.
"No need to look so shocked, I thought about all this before deciding to come off suppressants. Besides it's not like I can go out on missions when I'm pregnant, so best get used to it now."
Alec felt his brain white out and a loud ringing in his ears. What had Jace just said?
He felt Magnus shift beside him and used the movement to ground himself.
"Pardon?" Magnus croaked.
Jace blushed and looked down at his lap.
"I came off the suppressants because I'm interested in finding a mate. And, if I find one, I am interested in having babies with them. At some point in the future." Jace explained, a soft smile gracing his lips as his hand came up to gently rest on his stomach, as though imagining a life growing there.
Alec felt lightheaded as all the blood in his body rushed south, the idea of Jace swollen with their child causing arousal to flood through him so fast he's surprised he didn't faint. Magnus let out a small groan beside him.
Jace glanced up as the scent of alpha arousal hit him, causing him to blush again.
"Couple's time, is it?" He asked with a cheeky grin, even as his insides twisted. "Well don't let me keep you, I think I'll go watch TV in my room for a while." Jace said as he got up off the couch and retreated to his room.
"I think he's trying to kill me" Alec moaned, as he collapsed back against Magnus' chest.
"Kill us" Magnus amended.
Jace didn't leave his room again for the rest of the evening and when Alec went to check on him, he found that the younger man had fallen asleep. He snuck in and pulled the blankets up around his chest, breathing his fill of the omega while he could. The crisp apple and sweet honey scent coating his tongue and Alec had to fight the urge to lean down and have a taste. He ran his fingers through Jace's soft hair before quietly retreating.
The next day both Alec and Magnus decided to stay home and keep Jace company. The other man seemed to be much more content since the effects of the suppressant shots had worn off and Magnus wondered if he had spent most of his life feeling conflicted. Trying to live one way while his instincts were telling him something completely different and being severely punished if he ever acted on them. The thought made Magnus' chest ache for what Jace had suffered and he found himself trying to fight the urge to pull the smaller man into a hug.
"What are you both doing here?" Jace asked in confusion as he emerged from his room mid-morning.
Alec and Magnus both looked up from the paperwork they'd been doing.
"Thought we'd spend the day at home with you today, keep you company while you rested" Alec answered with a smile.
Jace's eyes narrowed. "You're just checking up on me, making sure I actually rest. There's no need, I feel so tired I will definitely not be leaving the apartment today, so back to work you go." Jace said, making little shooing motions with his hands.
Magnus rolled his eyes.
"We aren't going anywhere, now come and sit down while I make you something to eat."
Jace pouted and Alec had to fight the urge to coo at him. He knew his parabatai would not take that well. He held out his arms and Jace reluctantly made his way over, curling into Alec's side and resting his head on the broad chest.
"How are you feeling?" Alec murmured.
"Not to bad, just a bit of pain still and I'm really tired."
Alec hummed. "I've just got to finish up this paperwork and then we can put on a movie."
Jace nodded agreeably while Alec got back to work. The peace didn't last long before Jace was squirming, he shifted, then shifted again, rolled on one side and then the other. Alec was about to ask Jace what was wrong when the other got up and disappeared into his room, reappearing a few minutes later with a pile of blankets and pillows clutched in his arms. The blonde settled back beside Alec arranging the pillows into a comfortable pile, before settling some blankets over the pillows then the rest over himself as he clambered on. He let out a sigh of contentment. Head still leaning on Alec but the rest of him was surrounded by softness.
Alec sat wide eyed and motionless as he watched the proceedings before him. He felt like his breath catch in his throat as he realised that Jace was making a nest. The omega was nesting! Probably for the first time in his life. Jace might not even be aware of what he was doing, and sure it was rather rudimentary, but that was definitely a nest.
Magnus paused on his way back into the room, a tray ladened with bacon, eggs and toast held in his hands. His eyes opened slightly, and he glanced at Alec as he took in the scene before him. Thankfully, Magnus showed no other reaction as he continued in and placed the tray on the coffee table.
"Breakfast," he said simply.
Alec took a piece of toast as he continued working while Jace loaded up a plate and dug in. They hadn't been eating long when a knock sounded at the door. Alec raised his eyebrows at Magnus, they weren't expecting anyone.
The warlock stood to answer the door, returning a few moments later with a dark scowl on his face and a shadowhunter in tow. Jace looked up, a piece of half-eaten bacon sticking out of his lips as he took in the other shadowhunter. A look of confusion crossing his face.
"Austin, what a surprise to see you here. What can we do for you?" Alec asked seriously, taking in the way the others eyes were darting between the three in the room.
"Ah, hey Jace" Austin said with a small wave, Jace just looked flummoxed.
"Hey…?"
"You missed our sparring match this morning and I heard you were injured yesterday so thought I would drop in and see how you were feeling. I, ah, didn't realise who you lived with" Austin explained awkwardly.
"Oh, right, sorry about that. I won't be back in for a few days but I'm sure we can reschedule our practice till then" Jace said with a small shrug.
He turned in surprise when he heard a small growl come from Alec and the scent of distressed alpha reached his nose. His omega immediately grew anxious at the smell. Why was alpha upset? What had he done wrong?
Jace made a sound he never thought he would make in his life. He whined, a small soft whimper that stole its way from his throat before he could process what he was doing. All three alphas spun to stare at him and Jace let out another sound of distress, Austin made to take a step closer, but Magnus was quickly between them, a fierce growl leaving his lips, just as Alec scooped Jace up into his arms. Jace still wasn't sure what was happening, just letting his instincts guide him as he buried his face in Alec's chest and let the soothing scent calm him. The alpha didn't smell so upset now and Jace felt himself start to relax.
Jace vaguely heard Magnus leading Austin out but didn't pay much attention to that, as Alec was currently carrying him to bed. Not his bed either, he was being taken to Alec and Magnus' bed! He felt his cheeks redden as he was placed gently down on the soft blankets and Alec wrapped himself around the smaller figure, snuffling his face into Jace's fair hair.
"Yo-you don't have to be so close" Jace said quietly. "I know you don't like my scent."
Alec pulled back so he could get a proper look at Jace's face.
"You're wrong" Alec said as he ran his nose along the shell of Jace's ear, taking a deep breath. "I love your scent. I'm just getting use to it, that's all. It can be quite heady."
Magnus joined them a moment later and crawled in on Jace's other side, wrapping his arms around both Alec and Jace.
"He's right little one, you smell simply divine."
Jace looked dubious at the words but decided not to fight them on it. Not this time anyway. He knew he should leave the couple alone but gosh, he couldn't remember the last time he was held like this. He felt his whole body warm from the contact and he burrowed deeper into Alec's chest. He didn't even realise when he started purring contentedly. He reached out a hand, blindly searching for Magnus, feeling relieved when a larger hand engulphed his own.
His mind still felt cloudy, but he let himself enjoy the warmth of the other two, not fighting it when sleep claimed him.
