Jessica stumbled up the steps of her apartment building and sighed. She had been seen but at least she did something good this time. Opening the door, she walked down the narrow hallway to the bathroom. Exhausted, she leaned back against the wall between the shower and the sink, sliding down to the floor. She sighed, closed her eyes and saw the red man. His muscular frame, his stance oozed with confidence. But the sinister laugh caused her eyes to snap open. Her stepfather faced her, "Didn't you hear me, silly girl? I said, where have you been?"

Jessica rolled her eyes at him and attempted stand up. He shoved her hard into the wall. Rolling back her shoulders, she stepped around him and proceeded into the kitchen. Opening the fridge, she grabbed herself a beer. "Hey!" he yelled as he smacked it out of her hand. Jessica looked at him as she could feel herself losing control. "Where have you been?" he stared at her, challenging her.

She could feel her eyes begin to glow as she looked down at the beer on the floor. Get it together. Don't do this! God, something save me. She thought as she answered him, "Get out of my face." she hissed at him as he cocked his fist back.

Hellboy hid in the bushes as kids walked passed him, dressed up as various creatures. After all, it was Halloween, he should fit in without flaw. Yet, how he longed for a normal life like that. For someone to look at him like he was just like everyone else. A pair of teenagers came and sat down on the beach adjacent from him. They began to kiss and make out as Hellboy stomached a wretch in his throat. He looked over seeing that six pack of beer the boy sat down. He needed it more than they did, he snaked his tail around, looping it through the plastic ring. He then took off into the woods behind the suburban homes. Stopping out of sight, he leaned against a tree. He closed his eyes and saw the girl.

She was younger, maybe a year or two younger than Liz. So that'd put at about around twenty-five, twenty-six? But he couldn't be sure of her age, he saw the black wings that she sported so well. She saved Myers and yet, she didn't even know him. Her eyes matched his skin and that caused a shiver to crawl down his spine, giving him an uneasy feeling of familiarity that he couldn't shake. There was something about her, some kind of magnetic pull that drew him to her. Shrugging it off, he made his way up to the hospital. He needed to talk to someone. He needed Liz.

Darkness danced it's smoky fire around Jessica's soul. It reached out to her; its hand in tendrils of night reminded her of the most delicate woman. Running it's thumb over her lips, it shook her awake. When Jessica came to, she found herself on the floor. Sitting up, she found herself winded. That's when she noticed the dampness on her face. Bringing her hand to her face, she wiped her nose, seeing the crimson blood. Her eyes flashed red as darkness crept in in plombs of smoke around every corner. She saw her stepfather leaning back against the counter, laughing. "You're just like your mother...weak."

Jessica let a low growl out of her throat. The darkness was coming closer, the smoke becoming more thick. She couldn't breathe, struggling to stand she felt a sharp stabbing pain on her right side. He had definitely broken some ribs. Jessica spit her own blood on the floor as she got up slowly. She had had enough of this crap. For eighteen years she put up with this. She looked up at the ceiling as the room filled with smoke and hellfire. Her stepfather only laughed more. She looked at him as her wings expanded across the kitchen, knocking items down off their shelves before quickly snapping back to her spine. She made three strong strides across the room as her hand extended out, grabbing him by the throat. She drew him close before slamming his body against the wall. "You should have never touched her," Jessica growled, unable to recognize her own voice. The man finally stopped laughing as he saw the dark fire in the shape of the devil outside the window. Jessica leaned in, whispering into his ear, "And you'll never touch me again." Pulling back, Jessica felt the tears of guilt fall from her cheek as she unleashed her power on him. Hellfire and darkness came crashing through the apartment windows, flooding the apartment as her stepfather's body disintegrated to ash. She could hear people screaming in the apartments below. She did it again... She made her way through the flooded and flame engulfed hallway to her room. Hellfire crept in from every part of it. She watched in horror as he world burned down around her.

Jessica managed to slip through the window before the apartment building exploded. She stood across the street among the throngs of people and watched it burn. She sighed in relief and pain as she walked up the street towards the hospital. Forcing herself to leaning on each building as she walked for even the beat of her heart was becoming too heavy to bare. She needed to get somewhere safe. She had to get to Liz.

Liz helped the nurse distribute medication to the other patients. She had been on good behavior these past few months had was given a few new freedoms. Normalcy in small increments. She turned her head when she heard Charlotte, one of the other patients, cry out. " There's a big red man down there." Liz put down the try and walked down the stairs to the Welcome Wing. As she came out the front door, she saw Red. "You're not supposed to be here," she said as she saw the tail dangling a six pack with one beer missing.

"I brought beer." his gruff voice responded as he came around the corner into her view.

Liz noticed the burn on his forearm and frowned, "Oh, Red, your arm!" Hellboy looked over at his arm and shrugged as he sat on the bench. Liz walked over to him and sat down, "You should get that looked at."

He looked over at her, "Why? When I have my own personal nurse right here!" he smiled at Liz and she laughed at him. "I needed to talk to someone." He continued as he took a swig of his beer. Liz sat there and listened, "I've never seen anyone like her. And I've seen a lot of shit. Liz, she's beautiful and deadly all in one. She's so...so..." He stammered trying to find the right words.

"So much like you?" Liz finished his thought for him. Hellboy looked over at Liz, smiling. Looking down, Liz caught herself blushing. Then she heard it. That voice. It came like a whisper. A small cry from the heavens. Looking over towards the hospital entrance, she could see a girl in black jeans, boot and a black leather jacket clinging to the wall. Concern washed over her as Liz got up and ran over to the girl. "Jess!" she said as she reached for the girl. She never even noticed that Red followed her. He stood and looked at the two of them. He caught his breath when a pair of perfect green eyes reflected back.

Jessica leaned up against the wall of the hospital entrance as she saw Liz sitting with the red man from earlier. "Liz," she weakly called out, catching Liz' attention. As Liz came rushing over, Jessica lost her balance, falling to her knees.

"Jesus Christ." Liz swore as she caught her, "Jess!" she exclaimed when she pulled her hood back. Liz ran her hands over Jessica's heavily beaten face. "God, what has he done?!" Slowly, Liz tried to help her up only for Jessica to wretch forward; blood spewing from her mouth. Liz reeled back as Jessica fell to the ground. She looked up to see the red man standing over her just before her world went black.

Liz sat back for a moment and took a deep breath as Red picked up the girl in his arms, "Jess," Liz said sadly. Pushing herself to her feet, she looked up at Red, "Take her back with you. " Liz looked across the street as the black car pulled up.

Red rolled his eyes, "The nanny squad."

Wiping a black hair from Jess' face, Liz looked at the poor girl, "Red, you have to take her with you." She looked at him, her brown eyes pleading, "She's my friend and she needs to be safe. Please, you have to save her." Hellboy looked at Liz, silently understanding. "For all I know, her stepfather beat her bad and..." before Liz could finish a swarm of police and emergency vehicles raced down the street passed the hospital towards down town. Liz walked to the hospital corner as she looked. Her hand covered her mouth at the plomb of black smoke that raged into the atmosphere. She turned to Red as she caught a glimpse of the young agent walking up behind him.

"Did she do that?" Hellboy asked as he instinctively held Jess closer to his chest.

"Yes..." Liz answered as they looked in shock. "Her stepfather beats her. Sometimes so bad that he almost kills her..." Liz looked at him.

Red turned to Clay, handing him the girl, "Put her in the car." Clay nodded as he walked back to the car and placed her inside. Hellboy turned back to Liz and looked towards the dark smoke downtown. "I don't think he'll hit her anymore." He couldn't believe what he saw. The girl was beaten bad, on the brink of death. He could sense it on her; her heartbeat was shallow. He wanted to kill the s.o.b. himself but the girl's power lashed out first. He wished he could have saved her before this had come to pass. He looked at Liz as she turned back to the hospital, "Yeah I gotta go too, lots of stuff to do." He turned for the car as he too fell to his knees. His might was exhausted. First from the fight with Samael, now from this.

"Shit," Myers whispered before grabbing HB, "You're gonna kill yourself." He said as he and Clay assisted him to the car.

As Hellboy sat down, he waved to Liz and glanced over at the girl named 'Jess'. She was still bleeding and heavily. Hellboy leaned over her and wiped her face with his shirt. "Nah," he said to Myers in the front seat as they pulled away from the curb. He looked at her small face, her very fair skin and her rose red lips. He put his left hand on her face as he rubbed his thumb back and forth over her cheek. "That's not what will kill me." he said as he looked down at her. Leaning in, he could hear her heartbeat becoming more and more shallow. "If you stay," he whispered low, "If you fight," low enough that no one else in the car could hear him, "I'll keep you safe. I promise."
