Moving to New Orleans was, in Lily's mind, the most wonderful place to be. She loved the music that constantly floated through the air, the exciting smells that she could never quite identify, how the streets light up every night with fairy lights. And the food! She couldn't get enough of it. Sweet biscuits, savory gumbo, everything was new and amazing.
The only thing missing was her sister. Not that she had much time to worry about her though, what with her mother rushing her about everywhere. Apparently, a single mother isn't an ideal worker, thus the newly dubbed Ms. Jones has been forced to take any job she can.
One such job at Duke's cafe was taking too long in Lily's opinion, so she set off wandering the streets with her mother's permission. After buying a beignet from a food stall Lily's attention drifted away as she daydreamed of future adventures.
Suddenly she felt a rough yank and her handbag was stolen from her. Spinning frantically she spotted the thief, a young boy with a mop of black hair was running at full speed. Fuming Lily took after the thief determined to get her bag back.
Dodging people and taking sharp turns her annoyance rises exponentially. But also her fear, all of her money was in that purse if her mother found out she lost it. Lily shuddered, she did not want to face her mother's disappointment. An odd tingling sensation filled Lily up as she skidded into an alleyway, thinking that victory was close the tingling slowed down. But as the boy revealed a hidden door the sensation increased tenfold and she blinked.
But when her eyes opened she found herself face to face with the boy. His mouth dropped and he stuttered in exclamation.
"You- you. You're a witch!" Lily backed away from him.
"No, I'm not!"
"Yes, you are! How else could you teleport like that." He finished snarkily. Lily opened her mouth to argue further but stopped, strange things happened around her, things that she couldn't explain. She looked closely at the boy, who was eagerly watching her expressions.
"How would you know if I'm a witch or not?" she asked curiously.
"Cause I'm a witch too! Well, a witch doctor but you get my point."
"What is a witch doctor?"
The boy smiled and opened the hidden door, "I'll show you."
The room was old, dirty, and threadbare. Broken shelves with decrepit books, dolls scattered on the floor, odd statues and figurines stood in unorderly lines. An occasional poster written in unknown languages hung upon the wall. A single round table stood in the back of the room. Smushed into the left corner was a pile of grayed blankets and clothes laid.
"An old voodoo priestess lived here but when she went to the bayou she left all these things here." the boy said proudly.
He scrambled to a pile and pulled out a book with the bold words 'A Beginner's Guide To Everything Voodoo.'
"And this baby is what will tell you exactly what a witch doctor is." he flipped it open and began reading. "A witch doctor is a magician with powers of healing, divination, and protection against others. Blah blah blah other magic things."
Lily snatched the book from the boy's hands and violently started reading. Pausing for a brief moment she looked at him with a small smile.
"You have got to teach me this."
The boy smiled and reached out a hand. "Gladly." Lily shook his hand. Dropping the book she shouted.
"Mother! I forgot about her." she quickly dashed out of the room but before leaving she says. "I'm Lily, you?"
"Facilier." He says throwing back the stolen purse.
