Hi! Thank you to everyone who read the first chapter! Sorry for any medical mistakes! I did my research, but I'm not a doctor. Please review! Happy Reading!
Percy
I was worried about Annabeth. Who wouldn't be? My girlfriend was on bedrest with multiple broken bones and a head injury. All I wanted to do was sit next to her bed in the infirmary, but Nico insisted that it wasn't good for me to do that. So I let him drag me to the climbing wall. If you need to go somewhere to take your mind off something the climbing wall is the place. There's no time to think about anything else because you have to think about not dying.
Nico and I started to climb. I actually started to enjoy myself as Nico and I ascended the wall. Lava came pouring down but I made sure to move out of the way before I became a Percy-kabab. I started to breathe heavily about halfway to the top but I thought nothing of it. I mean, if you were climbing a wall and trying not to die wouldn't you be out of breath.
I stop to catch my breath. Nico looks at me, "You okay Percy?" He asks, knowing that I rarely stop until I get to the top of the climbing wall. I nod, taking deep breaths to soothe my burning lungs. "Just a little out of shape." I say, taking a breath in between each word. Even though I haven't been climbing for a few minutes I can't seem to catch my breath. I try to breathe in and out evenly but nothing seems to work. I start to breathe harder. It gets harder and harder to breathe each time I inhale. My head starts to spin. My inhales and exhales are shorter now. I suck in each breath trying to get more air but it seems impossible. "Nico," I wheeze, "I can't breathe." Nico looks at me worriedly.
"Will, we have a problem." He calls, his eyebrows creased with worry. I start to climb down the wall, but halfway down lava starts to pour. I look up and notice, but it's too late. My hands burn and my fingers give out. I spiral towards the ground, and black out, the ground zooming toward me.
Will
I hear Nico yell for me and start to walk over to where he and Percy are climbing. Suddenly a figure falls off the wall and spirals towards the ground. I break into a run and yell for someone to get a stretcher. I worry that it may have been Nico that fell but when I get there Nico is kneeling next to an unconscious Percy. "Nico, what happened?" I ask. I see that Percy has badly burned arms and hands and I kneel down to look at them. "Will stop," Nico says. I look up, "Right before he fell he said that he couldn't breathe." I look wide eyed at Nico. "He…..Wha," I start to say but then stop talking.
I know that Percy's life depends on me. I listen for breath and feel for a heartbeat but he has neither. I start to get worried but I try my best to stay calm. I kneel over Percy and start doing CPR. I do a couple rounds then I help to transfer him onto the stretcher. I am careful because Percy probably broke a few bones when he fell and I don't want to make it worse. I continue doing CPR as we rush to the infirmary.
As soon as we are inside Annabeth sees that it's Percy. "PERCY," she screams, sitting up and getting out of her bed. I whisper to Nico, "Get her back in bed and calm her down." He nods and goes over to Annabeth, talking to her in a soothing voice. I yell, "I need a crash cart and a syringe stat." One of my siblings brings it to me right away. I take the syringe and pull out the plug. I lift it then stab it into Percy's chest. I hear Annabeth scream as it goes in. Grabbing my stethoscope I listen for breathing and am relieved when I hear it.
Now I have to do the hard part. I grab the paddles from the crash cart. "Charging..clear," I shock Percy and listen for a heartbeat. Nothing. It takes two more tries until I hear one. When I nod to the crowd of people around me they let out a collective sigh of relief. Nico helps me gently transfer Percy into the bed next to Annabeth. I get an oxygen mask and slip it onto his face. After hooking him up to a heart and breathing monitor (I'm not taking any chances) I sit down in a chair next to Annabeth. I am about to talk to her when I remember Percy's burns. I was so distracted by everything else that I forgot.
I jump up and grab some antiseptic and a lot of bandages. I gently clean and check the damage that all of Percy's burns did. They are pretty bad. After cleaning them, I gently wrap them up in white bandages. The bandages cover both arms all the way up to his shoulders. When I finish I go back over to Annabeth and take her hand. "It's going to be okay," I whisper. She looks at me with tears streaming down her cheeks. She takes a deep breath then starts talking, "Will, what happened? Is Percy going to be okay? Who did this to him?" "Whoa, slow down Annabeth." I say, putting a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. Nico tells her the first part of the story then I pick up from the climbing wall. "I did CPR and we got him here as fast as possible. He had a collapsed lung so I had to inflate it using the syringe. Then I restarted his heart. The lava from the climbing wall burned him badly." I say this all in a rush, trying to get all the bad news out at the same time.
Annabeth sniffles then says, "Is he going to be okay?" I know that this is going to be the hardest part. "He is in a coma right now. Even though we did CPR the lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain could have caused brain damage." She gasps and sobs into my shoulder. I wrap her protectively in a hug, being careful not to press on her ribs. We stay like that for a while and by the time she pulls away my t-shirt is soaked in tears but I don't care. I am about to leave when she says, "Can you move his bed a little closer so I can hold his hand." "Sure" I respond, "I'll be back in a little while to check on both of you."
