Chapter 2: Standoff

"Is it in their nature to make us wait this long?" Obi-Wan asked.

The door to the conference room and TC-14 walked in with a tray of drinks. The best I got was a tray of drinks and a cot. I'd been waiting for hours, expected to make me wait longer than usual.

"No," my dad said. "But I sense an unusual amount of fear for something as trivial as this trade route."

Obi-Wan took a drink. I shifted uneasily in my seat. TC-14 didn't even look at me. I wondered if she'd forgotten I was already here waiting for negotiations as well.

"It seems like darker events are unfolding," I said.

"So it seems," Obi-Wan agreed, giving me a small look. I tilted my head and didn't take anything from what TC-14 had on her tray.

"You'd know a lot more my daughter, if you-"

"Joined the Jedi when you wanted me to, I know," I said finishing it for him, giving him a strong look. He looked back at me. "I know. But I felt like I could be of more help elsewhere and I was excited for the queen's program when it was my turn to be picked. I wanted this life, and I'm happy."

"Are you?" he asked.

"Well, not right now, I don't like waiting," I simply said.

"That makes two of us," Obi-Wan muttered into his drink.

"You spoke to the Chancellor of all people, didn't you?" I asked.

"Yes, we felt-"

"Felt? You interfered. The queen is trying to do her job," I said.

"And we are trying to do ours," Qui-Gon added, trying to end the argument.

"You're protectors of the peace," I said. "This isn't it."

"And what would you call this?" Obi-Wan asked.

I laughed. "Interfering."

Suddenly there was a blast, making Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon jump to their feet and ignite their light sabers. I myself got up from my seat in alarm, and TC-14 almost spilt her tray.

"Ahh…sorry sir, the viceroy," she said, taking a step back and making her way out of the conference room.

Suddenly a hissing sound made me turned to the ventilators shaft, and gas formed around the room.

"Gas!" Qui-Gon cried and inhaled shortly, reaching for their breathing devices. I reached under my robes and grabbed mine within my boot that was strapped to it and placed it on my mouth and nose so I could breathe. The droids started shooting at us and I hid behind Obi-Wan so I didn't get hit.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan moved to destroy the droids as they were heading down in the hallway for them. They fought against one another, while I hid against the side door, wishing I could help them kill these things.

"A little help would be nice," Obi-Wan muttered next to me, while he was cutting a droid in half.

"And so would having my blaster," I added through the noise. "They confiscated it as soon as I was made."

"All right, well, stay behind me, you'll be fine," he said.

I rolled my eyes, but definitely was going to listen. I didn't want to get hit by these things, so I stayed close as possible.

"Destroyer droids!" my father yelled as they rolled out in front of us while we tried to escape the conference room. We were blocked by nearly all directions but the green and blue light sabers deflected each blast and sent the destroyers flying, and more doors closed trying to seal us in, but my father pushed through with his green light saber.

"Offhand, I'd say this mission is past the negotiation field!"

"Ya think?!" I cried, rushing to one of the droids that had died off and grabbed his weapon off the floor. I started shooting at them.

"They have shield generators!"

"It's a standoff, let's go," he said.

We took off running heading towards the hangar bay, and then knelt down after going through the ventilator shaft, which I wasn't too keen on but had help with Obi-Wan as I landed in his arms, which felt nice and warm as I disentangled myself from him. We both shared a small smile at each other and I lifted a piece of my hair out of the way over my ear and turned around to face what was happening in the main hangar bay.

It looked like an army of droids to me.

"Battle droids," my father noted.

"It's an invisible army," Obi-Wan said.

"It's an odd play for the trade federation," my father said. "We've got to warn the Naboo, and contact Chancellor Valorum. Let's split up. Stow aboard separate ships and meet down on the planet. Maddie, I want you with me."

"What? No. I'll be fine. I can get my own ship,"

"Maddie."

"I'll look after her," Obi-Wan offered.

"I don't need anyone looking after me," I protested. "I can find my way to my own home planet thank you very much."

"Maddie, please," my father pleaded. "This is an unusual play. I don't trust it. But I am your father, can you at least trust me?"

I sighed. "Fine."

"Then it's settled. You will go with Obi-Wan and we will meet down in Naboo."
