Chapter 2
The Best Player in GGO
(One year later.)
Gun Gale Online wasn't for the faint of heart, especially since one mistake can get you killed in the game. But for Corrin that was all the life he had. He only had one chance - no restarts - which made this game even more terrifying for him. Corrin Yealof was relaxing on top of one of the broken buildings of the Reanimate Wasteland trying to allow his body to relax before he had to focus. Corrin sighed as a small breeze brushed across his face. Out of all the territories that were in GGO, the Reanimate Wasteland was the most peaceful to Corrin, which allowed him to truly relax.
He still couldn't believe how fast the year had passed, and how far he had come in such a short time. Though Corrin had to admit that having his combined stats from SAO and ALO transfer to GGO really helped his progress exponentially. The first two months, Corrin spent his time ranking up his skills, then the next six months Corrin grinded for the best accessories (which he had to admit, it frustrated the heck out of him), then for three months Corrin grinded bosses for the best guns and sword in the game. All in all, Corrin thought that he had a pretty successful year, especially since he got rid for the blue combat jacket he had and replaced it with something more his style which finally made Corrin feel right at home. The outfit that he managed to get was called the Nocturnal Coat, but if Corrin had to be honest, the colors that he got made him dub it, Shining Coat. The main color was a goldish yellow that covered almost the entire jacket, and then a deep blue for the outline and inside of the coat, a silvery metal plate covered his chest and forearms to finish the look. It reminded him of the cloak that he wore in SAO.
A crunching sound caught Corrin's attention. He quickly turned over onto his stomach and glanced through the scope of his AMR Tiamat Type Z. He scanned the surroundings, making sure that his targets hadn't passed him while he was relaxing. He double checked the entrance before he got up and sat on his knees. Good I didn't miss them, Corrin thought as he unconsciously rubbed the barrel of his Long Stroke Type Z that hung at his side.
After he got all his equipment secure, for this last month until now Corrin took out high bounty targets just for fun, while also getting some practice with his sword, pistol, and sniper skills. His main weapon, a sword, was the Kagamisu G9 Type Z, which had helped him through a lot of tough spots in dungeons and boss fights, and after Corrin figured out that he could actually deflect bullets with his sword, it almost was a necessity to have his sword whenever he fought other players. Not only because it was a good defensive strategy, but it was a lot of fun seeing the surprised faces of the players he was deflecting before cutting them it half.
Other than that, Corrin wasn't that bad with his pistol and sniper either. Though he still had some work to do before he could top the best snipers in the game, Corrin could get a head shot almost every time with his sniper. His guns were also a golden color making them match his outfit, so Corrin smiled slightly as he stared up at the orangish-pink sky. If anything, his year spent in GGO wasn't an absolute nightmare, even though he didn't have any friends here this time killing mobs and battling other players with him in intense fights.
But whenever he looked at the sky, he would always remember the last time he spent time with his mom and dad when they decided to give him a break from studying and take Corrin to his first picnic. This was the only memory of his parents that Corrin could remember clearly. He could remember the wide smiles they had on their faces as Corrin stuffed his face with his favorite snack, gummy bears, as they just sat and looked at the horizon. The sky was the same color then as it was now for Corrin, creating a great sense of longing settle in Corrin's heart.
He wondered if his parents were ok, a part of Corrin wanted them to have forgotten about him, it would have made their lives so much easier. . .
Corrin shook his head as he refocused himself on the task at hand. Now s not the time to think about the past, Corrin thought as he peeked into his scope and instantly, he found his targets. Three figures walked in the distance about 17 kilometers from where Corrin was positioned, seeming to take each step they took with care. They must have known that someone was onto them, but lucky for Corrin, they were clueless to his position. Corrin had hunted these players before and each time their reactions to being killed made Corrin chuckle. The one with a bounty of 500k was Bosalt Joe. He was a big and rugged man with a scar on his left eye and a beret. The weapons that he wielded (or at least the ones that Corrin had seen him use) were a pistol as a support weapon and two heavy machine guns for his main artillery.
His friends weren't as high on the bounty rating as Joe was, but they still gave a good fight making them still worthwhile targets. Corrin smirked as he pushed a button on his earpiece, which instantly began to form into one of his accessories, the Abysal Mask. After tinkering with the mask for a while after he obtained it from a dungeon called the Abysal Dungan, Corrin figured out that it could configure itself into an earpiece and then turn back into its normal form with a click of a button. It made a cool little, identity hiding accessory which made him living in GGO a little more secretive and in some ways exciting.
Though that wasn't the only thing that the mask could do; as the mask started to form itself over his face, the visual information of the land s layout began to appear right before his eyes. He could see everything like normal, but information appeared right above most every object he could see: it showed how much durability an object had or in the case of players their HP, distance that they had from each other, and finally it gave Corrin a mini map of the area in the top left corner of his vision.
It was a very useful piece of equipment, and it even matched the color scheme of his outfit, the mask a golden yellow and the visor on the outside a deep blue. Once he got used to the constant flood of information that he was seeing, Corrin leaned closer to his rifle and began to set up his shot. Since there was a breeze and a pretty good distance between them, Corrin had to angle the shoot a little bit off target, but thankfully the bullet circle made the shot a little easier to set up.
A small circle had appeared in his vision, seeming to pulse like it was connected to his heartbeat, which in fact it was. His heartbeat was surprisingly low for Corrin slightly excited state as he lined up the shot then spoke, "Explosive Shot Level 4." As Corrin recited those words the rifle began to grow hot in his hands as the barrel began to glow a bright red, like the color of melting metal. Corrin had never tried this skill out on players before but with the fact that there were three of them, and with the fact that the sniper that he was using was bolt action, using the skill was his best option of killing them without blowing his cover.
In all honesty, Corrin had never tried out the Level 4 version of the skill yet which caused him to feel the excitement of his anticipation, as he took a shaky breath and pulled the trigger. Almost instantaneously, an explosion erupted right where the three targets had been making Corrin yelp in surprise as a dust cloud spread across the ground. After the dust settled Corrin checked his scope just to make sure that they were dead, and sure enough all three bodies layer motionless with the dead icon hovering over their bodies. Though instead of being right next to each other they were scattered about thirty feet apart, making Corrin burst out in laughter. "That skill is so dumb, but so worth it!" Corrin laughed as he reloaded his rifle and started to gather his equipment.
But right as Corrin went to stand up a small crunching sound, abruptly stopped him in his tracks. Glancing up at the mini map, a small red dot was right behind him, making Corrin tense slightly. Whoever this player was, he hadn't attacked yet which must of meant one of two things: one, he or she might be trying to conceal their presence so they can catch Corrin by surprise, or two, they wanted him to know he or she was there.
"I know you're there, so why don't we introduce ourselves before things get ugly," Corrin stated as he carefully stood up and turned around. The man that was behind him had a huge grin on his face, as he stood there with what looked like a submachine gun hoisted onto his shoulder. The man had short brown hair, with goggles over his eyes, he wore what looked like a skintight suit that was a dark gray from the legs all the way up to before his upper chest. His upper chest was covered with a dark violet fabric that extended back into a black cape.
Grenades and flash bangs hung at his belt; bullets were something that Corrin could either dodge or deflect but with explosions Corrin would have to improvise. The man chuckled slightly as he leaned back a little, his smug smile growing a little wider. "I definitely wasn't expecting that the intel I received was for the Golden Strider. I guess today's my lucky day," he said as he scratched his head.
Golden Strider was a stupid nickname that Corrin had been dubbed with, after he started killing a lot of high bounty players with ease. The "Golden" part Corrin guessed was for his golden clad appearance, and for the "Strider" part Corrin could only guess that if came from the speed at which he killed his foes. All of Corrin's stats were through the roof, but with the movement speed enhancements that he had on his accessories, and with the skill Speed Form 4, it basically made him a blur once he got moving.
From the excited tone of the man's voice, Corrin suspected that he was hoping to run into him which didn't sit well in Corrin's stomach. He must be confident in his abilities if he wanted to run into me, Corrin thought as he opened his menu and switched his rifle out for his sword.
"Yeah, I'm the Golden Strider. And you are?" Corrin asked as he silently began buffing himself.
"Oh, I'm Yamikaze, and by the way it s an honor to meet you," he said making Corrin's eyes widen in recognition.
Yamikaze was one of the top players in GGO, he has a reputation for having a broken AGI build that made him almost unstoppable. Corrin heard that in the last BOB (Bullet of Bullets) that Yamikaze tied for first place with the top player only because of a gift grenade. In other words, if Yamikaze hadn't been tricked most players thought he would have won.
Corrin was a little flattered that a top player like Yamikaze would think of him as a threat but that also meant that Corrin couldn't hold back if he wanted to survive. "I'm flattered that a top player would actually be hunting me, so the honor is mine," Corrin stated.
"Oh yeah, your rep has been spreading like a wild fire here in GGO, some have been saying that you'll become the top player, while some have even compared you to me," he said as he stopped leaning back, his face turning serious.
"And I can't have people thinking that someone can actually match me, so this'll be our official fight to the death, to see who the number one player in GGO really is."
Corrin swallowed the nervous lump in his throat as his hand hovered over his photon sword. "What do you mean by that?" Corrin asked a little confused.
"I guess you haven't checked the bounty ranking in a while. Here, allow me," he said as he opened his menu and turned it around so Corrin could see. The top ten bounty rankings were directly in front of him and Corrin's eyes widened as he saw his nickname in fourth place, while Yamikaze was in second place.
"So, you see," he began as he made the menu disappear.
"Whoever wins this fight will gain the others bounty, and become the highest-ranking player in the game. Is that correct?" Corrin interrupted making Yamikaze jump slightly.
He cleared his throat, "Yes, that is correct."
"I normally avoid top players until I have enough intel on them, but this is the only exception," he said as his body began to glow different colors which meant that he was buffing himself.
"You suddenly appear and think you can surpass those who have busted their butts to get up to where we are now? That really ticks me off." He seemed to growl as he took his stance.
"Let s cut your pride down to size!" He finished as he charged.
In a blink of an eye, Yamikaze closed the distance in between them and pressed his submachine gun into Corrin's chest. If Corrin hadn't been expecting a quick assault, he would've taken a lot of damage, maybe even died. But Corrin was ready as he activated his sword, making a straight beam of light blue light appear, and right as he felt the barrel touch his chest, Corrin pivoted making the barrel point past him and Corrin took that opportunity to swing his sword at Yamikaze.
He quickly realized what was happening and jumped away making Corrin's sword graze his cheek taking a little bit of HP from his gauge. After landing, Yamikaze quickly pointed his gun at Corrin, which sent thousands of bullet lines in Corrin direction, and pulled the trigger.
A storm of bullets went flying towards Corrin, but Corrin just smiled under his mask as he dodged the first bullet and began slashing the bullets out of the air before they hit him. He began making his way toward Yamikaze, while he twisted himself through the air like an acrobat, dodging and deflecting the bullets at the same time. Corrin smiled when he saw Yamikasa's dumbstruck nervous face, as he got closer and closer to him.
"How are you doing that? Th-that's impossible!" He shouted as he dashed away to reload. But Corrin caught up to him quickly as he swung at him. Corrin missed as Yamikaze rolled out of the way and threw his grenade at him. Corrin quickly glanced at it, slashed the grenade in half and then retreated. Swiftly regaining his footing, Corrin bent down and started to activate a sword skill; power flowed from his body and into his sword making his whole-body glow with a bright yellow light. Then right as the ion grenade exploded, Corrin shouted, "Vorpal Strike 4!"
Corrin lunched himself into the explosions, and met his mark with a mighty thud, his blade running through Yamikaze and protruding out of his back. As he slid to a halt, Corrin observed as Yamikasa's HP quickly drained to zero, making a dead sign appear above his body. Corrin sighed in relief as he pulled his blade from Yamikasa's corpse and sat down while taking in some deep breaths.
He almost couldn't believe that he just beat the second-best player in GGO and now because of the bounty that he should have gotten from Yamikaze, Corrin was from this moment on the best player in GGO.
Corrin laughed to himself as he laid down with a small smile spread across his face. But his smile vanished as quickly as it had come, as a sharp pain spread, attacking his body. Corrin groaned as he held his stomach, the pain paralyzing him from how intensely it reverberated all over his body. Corrin's mind was blank as he took slow deep breaths, trying the best way he knew how to reduce the pain that enveloped his body.
Thankfully, the pain began to decrease in intensity after a while, bringing Corrin back from his broken state of mind. Crap! That sucked, Corrin thought as he kept taking deep breath as if he was preparing himself before he vomited.
The cause of this excruciating pain was a cycle that Corrin knew as autophagy, or in other words, Corrin's body eating itself from lack of nutrition. Or at least that s what Corrin thought caused the immense pain; it was the only thing that made sense. The pain had started to show itself occasionally four years ago while he was still fighting in SAO; it then poked its ugly head back again during the final battle to save Asuna. Then after a year of being completely pain free, it fell over him when he least expected it; it didn't make any sense.
Though he was thankful that he didn't feel this pain more frequently, he'd rather die than endure that pain 24/7. As the pain finally left, a notification suddenly appeared in the top right corner of his vision, which made Corrin glance at it questioningly. "A message?" Corrin asked himself as he sat on his knees. "Who the heck would send me a message? I don't know anyone here," Corrin questioned as he opened his menu, quickly got to his messages then froze in shock as he read,
"To, Corrin
From, Kuraha.
Hey is this Corrin Yealof?"
