A/N: This was a pretty short chapter so I thought I'd post it today! Just wanted to give a thanks to thatstrawberrygirl again for being my beta-reader for this fic too! You're awesome!
When it was finally time to leave the Barton Farm, Wanda had been upset. For many reasons. Of course, she would miss her cousins and her Aunt Laura, but she really just wanted to stay in the quiet environment. Although it was still winter, she enjoyed the fact that it was peaceful, and she could spend her days outside, instead of being cooped up in the compound with so many people.
Just thinking about the compound made her nervous, and she didn't really know why. All the people who lived there; Bruce, Tony, Sam, Peter, along with her parents and Uncle Clint, were nothing but nice to her. She trusted them, and they showed her nothing but love. But she still couldn't help but feel a swirl of anxiety every time her parents talked about leaving.
One time in particular, she had caught them in the act. Although her nightmares were increasingly getting better, she had woken up from one with a start, expecting her parents to be there like they always were, but when she looked at the clock and realized it was only nine-thirty, she assumed they must be still downstairs.
So, she crept down the rickety stairs, seeking out solace. Maybe her dad would read to her, or her mama would sing that certain Russian lullaby that always seemed to lull her to sleep. Whether it was the words or the voice, she didn't know, but she suspected it was the latter.
Shew found them situated at the kitchen island, along with Yelena, Clint and Laura, no different than the other times she had come down, but it was the words that stopped her in her tracks.
"We will probably be leaving within the next week. Fury's done his best, but he can't keep us benched forever."
"She's doing so much better, too. It's been good for her. Lena, too. We can't thank you enough."
"Yes, thank you."
Tears in her eyes, she headed back up the stairs as quietly as possible.
It broke her heart that they were leaving soon. It had only been a month, and if it was up to her, she would stay forever. But she would never tell them that. They were too proud of her.
She'd miss everyone, but they'd be back. Or maybe, next time they'd come to visit them in New York.
On top of all that, she'd miss the tire swing that she spent so much time on.
Although she never told her parents this, they knew, so they took it upon themselves to surprise Wanda with her very own.
It first came up a few weeks ago. Wanda was outside, swinging by herself as per usual.
It was morning, and she had gone outside immediately after Nat had tried, and failed miserably, to get her to eat enough. She was getting better at it, gradually eating more and more every meal, but breakfast was always the hardest.
Laura had let out a small chuckle, observing the small girl as she lazily swung back and forth, head pointed towards the sky.
"She sure does like that thing, doesn't she?" She said, bringing a mug of coffee to her lips, smirking, "You might want to build her one back at the compound."
She had meant it as a joke, but it actually wasn't a bad idea.
Steve had nodded.
"I was actually thinking about that. She won't be able to go out by herself like she can here, but it would be nice to have something familiar and comforting for her when we move back."
Nat nodded, and so did Clint.
"We could surprise her. I know the perfect spot at the back near the edge of the property."
Nat said, smiling at Wanda outside.
Yelena nodded.
"I could keep her busy while you build it, so she doesn't find out," She offered.
Yelena enjoyed keeping the young girl busy the past few weeks. It felt nice to be wanted, and she had missed so much of her childhood it was comforting to have very little worries, except if she could keep Wanda occupied and happy. She had never thought she would be a people person, let alone a kid one, but she enjoyed being an Aunt. She really did.
So, when it was finally time to go back to New York a few weeks later, Clint had snuck an old winter tire onto the Quinjet. Wanda was upset to leave, even shedding a few tears. It broke Nat's heart, but she knew the tire swing would cheer her up.
After they had landed and were relatively settled in, Wanda had retreated to her room, along with Yelena who went along to keep her company while Nat, Steve, and Clint went outside to attach the swing to a tree.
But picking the tree was the easy part. The compound was completely fenced in with security, and there were many trees on the property to pick from. One tree happened to be right below the kitchen window behind the building, a perfect spot. Not that they'd let her go down by herself anyway, at least not for the next little bit while she was still gaining her independence, but it was a nice, visible spot.
Putting the swing up proved to be much harder than picking out the tree. Nat stood back, watching Clint and Steve struggle while they figured out how to assemble the swing properly.
"Clint, no! Throw the rope over the tree, then tie a double bowline knot. The slip knot isn't sturdy enough."
"Excuse me!" Clint actually looked offended, and it made Nat laugh. "I'm the one who's actually done this before!"
"Yeah, but not since Nat was a kid. That was like, a million years ago. You haven't built a tire swing since then."
"Says the ninety-seven-year-old! And the tire swing I built is still on the tree, isn't it?"
Steve ignored the obvious truth. He huffed, crossing his arms.
"Military knots work better."
"But we aren't at war right now, are we?" Clint said.
Nat facepalmed. She couldn't handle the immature arguing anymore.
"It sure does feel like we are at war, doesn't it? Can you two stop arguing for one minute and just tie the damn thing on the tree?"
They both stared at her, blinking.
She sighed, grabbing the rope from Clint's hands, throwing it over the branch, and tying it in a simple double knot around the tire.
Steve leaned against the tree, defeated.
"There, was it that hard?"
"Fine, but don't come crying to me when poor Wanda goes flying because her mother didn't tie the rope tight enough."
"Steve, she literally weighs maybe fifty pounds! It's not going to break. Now come on, let's go get her before she figures out the surprise by finding her dad and her uncle rough-housing from her bedroom window."
When they headed up to the Avenger's compound, Yelena and Wanda were still in Wanda's bedroom. Wanda sat at her desk and Yelena sat on the floor, and they were colouring in colouring books. Wanda chattered away happily while Yelena just listened and laughed.
Both their heads cocked to the door when Nat knocked.
She opened the door, poking in. She smiled at the sight of them together.
"Wanda, malyshka, we have a surprise for you," Nat said. She winked to Yelena, who returned it with a smile.
She stood up rather quickly, running to her parents.
"A surprise? What kind of surprise?"
Steve laughed.
"Don't you want to come and find out?"
She nodded, looking to Yelena for confirmation. She just shrugged in response, playing dumb.
"Go on, детка." She smiled, gesturing her out with her parents.
Wanda skipped with Yelena behind Nat and Steve, as they headed outside.
She ran ahead to grab Nat's hand.
"Why are we going outside, mama?"
Nat just shrugged, a smile on her face as the girl looked at her with confusion.
"You'll see, milaya."
They continued in silence, but a delighted squeal erupted from the girl when Clint and the tire swing came into view, and they couldn't help but laugh.
"You built one for me?"
"We did, malyshka."
"Thank you, thank you!" She jumped up and down on the spot, running to hug her parents and uncle.
Steve laughed.
"No problem, sweet pea. We thought that since you spent so much time on the one at Uncle Clint and Auntie Laura's that you might want one here, too."
She nodded, running towards the swing to hop on.
Nat smiled at the sight, putting an arm around Yelena.
"Thanks for keeping her away while we tied it to the tree. You have no idea how complicated it was for two superheroes to figure out something that simple." She said, rolling her eyes.
Yelena laughed.
"It was no problem."
Nat smiled, pulling her sister into a side hug.
"I'm glad you're here, Lena."
"I'm glad to be here." She returned the smile
"Auntie Lena, can you come and push me?" Wanda shouted over from the tree.
Yelena laughed.
"Sure, детка."
Nat leaned against Steve, who wrapped an arm around her.
"She sure is happy. Tell Laura good thinking, Clint." Steve said.
Clint nodded.
"Will do."
Nat chuckled.
"Almost made all that squabbling between you two worth it, huh?"
They both scoffed, watching Wanda laugh in excitement, swinging back and forth. Yelena pushed her higher, resulting in even louder laughs from Wanda.
"Definitely worth it." Steve and Clint said simultaneously.
A/N: Once again, let me know if you guys have any ideas you'd like me to put into the story! I've got the next few chapters all planned out, but I'd like to have stuff you guys recommend incorporated into it, too. Just let me know! I have a list going of a whole bunch of different ideas. I'm also planning on adding some more of Yelena within the next few chapters, too. It's nice because since the movie hasn't come out yet, we still don't really know what her personality is like so I kinda get to play with it and develop it, which is pretty fun actually. So you might be seeing more of her soon!
Thanks again for reading xx
