Chapter 2! Enjoy XOXO
I don't own anything but my OC
Every day Mel checked on the boy as he rested. It had been almost a full week and he was still out cold. The day after he was brought in he developed a small fever. He seemed to be strong though as he sweated it out after two days. When examining him they also found a smaller puncture wound on his abdomen below, looking as if he was injected with something, feint black veins crawling along his skin. Elise had looked it over and didn't believe it was tied to anything with the virus so they cleaned it up the best they could and let him continue healing.
Watching over him time to time she noticed how fit he seemed and wondered how well he was able to take care of himself. He seemed to mumble at times as well she noted, but could never make out any of what he would try to say. The guys who found him would come in every few days to check on him, saying that Lawrence had questions. Each time her answer the same, that he had to wait just like them.
It was the beginning of his second week here when he finally woke up, his eyes immediately closing and groaning in protest to the bright light of day invading the darkness he'd been in previously.
Elise was by his side in seconds while Mel took a small step back to give everyone space and watched carefully. He blinked a few times as he started adjusting and when realization sunk in he tried leaping up and out of bed, confusion and fear all over his face.
"Woah hey calm down, calm done. Your ok your safe." Elise spoke in a soothing tone forcing him back down before he even had a chance to get all the way up. He was still a bit weak so he couldn't fight against her and leaned back into the bad.
"What's going on, where am I. What do you want with me!" He said more angrily now looking around the room for an escape.
"Your in the last city, your safe. Your not in that lab anymore." Mel spoke hoping that having someone else to distract him, Elise would be able to check him over and make sure his stitches hadn't come undone. When he turned his head towards her he almost glared at first, but seeing how she didn't seem like any scientist type he had seen in his memories from his changing, he decided to settle.
"Last city? What's that mean." He asked trying to make sense of everything.
Mel took a seat again near him, her eyes searching his. "You really don't know?" When nothing changed in his features she realized he truly didn't know anything she was talking about. Sighing she decided to try something.
"How about this, you ask me a question, I get to ask one back, that way we all get the answers we need to know." She offered raising her brows at him. After a moment of him seeming to think it over he gave a short nod and adjusted himself in the bed. Elise gave a small smile towards her glad that she was able to get him to stop squirming, she excused herself before walking over to the desk nearby in case she was needed.
"Ok first question. Where did you come from?" Mel started easy, wanting to know whatever he could tell them about the lab he was found in.
He gave himself a moment to process his thoughts before responding. "The Glade, maze, both I guess." He said short and simple. The what now? She had a thousand different thoughts running through her head as she prepared for his question.
"My turn. What the hell is the last city?" He crossed his arms glancing around again at the building.
Taking a breath she prepared herself a moment. "Well, that's kind of a long story, but to make it as short and sweet as possible.. This is the last remaining city within this giant wasteland. Although we technically live outside of it, WCKD doesn't like us very much anymore so we've distanced ourselves a bit from their walls."
When he heard the name leave her lips his head snapped back towards her, giving his full attention. He attempted to sit up further but winced when the motion tugged on his stitches. Elise cleared her throat to gain his gaze a moment and gave him a look of warning to not move around too much.
"WCKD.." He said for himself after a moment of silence. "I know that name. They're the ones that did this to us. The memories are a little fuzzy still, but it was the same name that always came on our supplies." He recollected, focusing on his thoughts as if she wasn't in the room anymore, hate filling his words as he remembered. Mel leaned forward, a look of sympathy in her eyes.
"I'm sorry for whatever they did to you. I promise your safe here now, but it would be really helpful if you could continue to tell us what you know about them and where you were found." Her tone never faltering from the softness it had started in. The complete opposite of the tough act he was trying to show.
He was about to open his mouth and start talking again when someone came in. "Hey he's finally awake." They said sizing the kid up.
"Yes Damian, he's awake. But I'm telling you once more he isn't going anywhere, he still has a lot of resting to do. It'll be at least a month before his wound is fully healed and he can be fully mobile" Mel replied back to him. Something told her that them knowing he was conscious would mean she'd be pestered more frequently.
"Lawrence isn't going to be happy with that answer." Damian said before walking out. The boy watched carefully, giving his world-class glare towards the guy as he exited.
"Who's Lawrence?" He asked keeping his eyes on the now empty doorway.
"He considers himself leader of the rebellion. Those of us that have had enough of WCKD and what they've done. He still believes someday he's going to get past those walls and take them down. It was one of his groups that found you and brought you here. He just wants to know the same as us, what you went through and what you know that'll help against them." She explained before standing up. "I think that's been enough excitement for today, I'll go get you some food if your up to eating, which I do suggest since you've been out for a whole week."
At the mention of food his stomach let out a loud growl which made her laugh and nod in confirmation that that was exactly what he needed. She put on her jacket and headed for the door before he called out to her.
"Wait, one last question." She turned towards him and nodded, waiting patiently.
"What's your name?" He asked.
She smiled forgetting that they hadn't introduced themselves yet, "Mel. Short for Melinda but I prefer being called the former."
"I'm Gally. Thank you, Melinda." He had finally dropped the bravado act as he looked at her, his eyes softening. But him ignoring her and using her full name told her he might be some trouble in the future.
"Your welcome Gally." And with that she left. Despite the circumstance, it made her feel happy to have someone new around that she could get to know. To learn about what was possibly beyond their small city and of other possible survivors. In a strange way it also gave her hope, that she might not be alone for much longer.
