Well, this was supposed to be a one-shot, but then I had an idea and well, here I am. This is now a two-shot. I don't expect another related idea to come to me.
Hope you enjoy!

He heard cries and sat up in bed. Shaking the sleep from his eyes, he quickly rolled out of bed and padded to Baby Kya's room.
Quietly so as not to wake the rest of the house, he opened the door and peered in. Her cries had subsided a bit, but she still sounded like she needed comfort. He glanced down the hallway dimly lit by a few oil lanterns and over at the door that was slightly ajar. He could hear soft familiar snores emanating from within the room behind the door.
"Mhm," he affirmed, deciding that he would take care of this himself.
Pushing the door open, he stepped inside, cooing at the baby.
"Hi Kya," he whispered.
She whimpered slightly, calling for his comfort.
"You okay in there?"
Moonlight streamed through her bedroom window, illuminating a portion of her crib. He saw that she was standing up on her own. A slow smile formed on his features. He had never seen her do that before.
There would be excitement in the morning when he shared this new development.
When Baby Kya registered his voice, she stuck a chubby hand out from between the crib slats and gave him a clumsy wave.
The moonlight shone on her pretty blue eyes, making them shine much like the gentle eyes of the waterbender he loved so much.
"We have a friend tonight, Kya," he said quietly.
He looked out of the window and up at the full moon. It seemed that Princess Yue, the Moon Spirit, was checking in on them tonight. She must have woken Kya with her soft rays of light.
He smiled at the Moon Spirit before making his way to the thick wooden rocking chair in the corner of the room. Standing behind it, he grabbed the back panels and gave it his best push. It was heavier than he thought it would be, but after a few deep meditative breaths to focus his energy, he was able to move it to sit right next to Kya's crib. She was sitting now, babbling quietly.
The baby cooed and watched him with what he had been told were curious eyes. Because she wants to learn from you.
Once the chair was situated, he climbed his way onto it, heaving a couple of tired breaths.
"That was heavy, huh," he breathed as she peered at him, blinking slowly.
He rocked in the chair in comfortable silence as she sucked on her tiny thumb, her cries and whimpers gone. He enjoyed these little moments with Baby Kya.
After a moment, she stuck out a chubby hand again to grab at him, her fingers wiggling as though it would help her reach him. He extended his arm out to give her his hand, but her tiny fingers could barely manage to hold just half of his hand.
He scratched at the back of his neck with his free hand and gave her a lopsided grin, "Why aren't you a sleepy girl tonight, Kya?"
They had told him she didn't understand big kid sentences yet, but he knew she understood him.
They were brother and sister, after all. Uncle Sokka said big brothers and little sisters understand each other better than almost anyone else.
The baby cooed softly at him, looking up towards the window. She let go of his hand and clapped hers together, the moonlight still making her eyes shine brightly.
Bumi smiled at his baby sister.
"How 'bout I tell you the very best bedtime story that Mommy tells me all the time?"
She looked back at him with a slightly cocked head and a little smile that showed the two tiny teeth that had come in recently.
"A-gaa," she babbled happily.
"Okay, Mommy said this a real-life story about her and Daddy because he's Av'tar. Can you say that?"
"B-ba-ba!" It almost sounded like he was trying to say his name and not their daddy's name.
"Now you're a happy baby, huh," he chuckled and reached a hand through the crib slats to ruffle the soft brown curls on her head.
He took a deep breath and began to tell her a story that his mommy and daddy had been telling him for as long as he could remember. They said it was about how they saved the world and fell in love. He always giggled at the mention of falling in love, causing either of his parents to tickle him until his sides ached from laughter.
"Well, a long time ago a man called the Av'tar saved the world. That was Daddy. A waterbender named Mommy and Uncle Sokka found him in a iceball! Like the ones where Grandpa 'Koda lives."
At the mention of their grandfather's name, Kya let out another sputter of happy baby sounds.
"Mommy and Daddy and Uncle Sokka went on a adven-aven-aventure to all kinds of places," that word had always challenged him, but he figured Kya wouldn't mind, "And that's when they met Auntie Toph and Aunt Suki and Uncle Zuko and Auntie Mai and everyone! But first, Uncle Zuko almost melted all the ice with his fire. Mommy said she was scared but Daddy made him stop. And after she learned how to bend water, the fire never melted all the ice again."
Kya looked at him with wide eyes. He grinned at her, happy that his favorite story might be entertaining her as much as it delighted him.
"Um, after that...after that is when they all went to the air temple and saw sad stuff. Mommy said she'll tell us the sad stuff when we're big kids. But that's the day that Av'tar Daddy went to glow mode! But it was scary and Mommy had to help him. He said that only she knows how to fix his glow mode."
Katara turned in bed. She thought she heard voices but her husband was sound asleep right next to her and the kids had finally gotten into an all-night sleep routine. It was wonderful.
She figured maybe she was just dreaming and allowed herself to begin to doze off again.
But then she heard a soft voice drifting in through the open door, and she immediately sat up.
The quick movement jolted Aang awake. He, too, sat up quickly, both sleepy and confused.
"Wha-wha' happened!?"
He looked around the room with panic and then turned back to her.
"Something wrong? Are the kids okay!?"
She grinned sheepishly before patting his hand comfortingly, "Sorry, Sweetie. Didn't mean to wake you. I heard voices or a voice...I think Bumi is awake, so I'm going to go check on him."
"Voices," he repeated, his own voice sounding gruff with grogginess.
"I'm sure it's just Bumi. Go back to sleep."
It was too late. Aang had already rolled out of bed and slipped his tunic on.
"Oh, not by yourself, you're not. If you heard voices I'm going with you. You take the kids and I'll handle the intruder," his voice was no longer that of her sleepy Aang but that of the Avatar in control of the situation.
He hurried to the door. She sighed, and rolled out of bed to follow him.
"You get Kya, I'll get Bumi," Aang whispered over his shoulder.
She rolled her eyes and smiled. He must miss their old adventures because this was totally unnecessary. Either way, she followed his directive and tiptoed down the hall over to the baby's room.
As she neared the room, she heard the sweet little voice of their five-year-old.
"And then daddy turned on his Av'tar mode so that his friends could be safe."
Her heart swelled with love and an entirely new level of contentment as she took in the scene. There was Bumi, sitting beside Kya's crib as he retold the very story that Katara and Aang had been telling him since before he had taken his first breath.
She heard steps behind her and turned to quiet her husband before he interrupted the moment. This was no intruder.
"Bumi's not-," his eyes were wide with fear.
Katara put a finger to her lips and smiled. She nodded her head toward the room where their children sat, illuminated by the dim moonlight. Aang peered in. He had another confused expression on his face. It soon faded into a huge grin and sparkling eyes when he realized what was going on.
The two shared a wordless exchange of gestures and facial expressions before turning back to peer into Kya's room again.
Bumi and Kya seemed too wrapped up in the story to even notice their parents watching them.
Aang wrapped his arms around Katara from behind, holding her close to his heart. Her hands found his and squeezed them lovingly. She could feel the dull rhythm of his heartbeat against her back; it matched hers.
"And then Mommy met a teller that told her she was gonna marry Daddy, but she didn't know. Except later she did because he's her best friend in the whole world."
Aang's body shook with a silent chuckle. He planted a kiss on her cheek before resting his chin on her head. Leaning them both against the wall to the side of the doorway, he let his arms slip down to her waist. The couple continued listening to their son's rendition of their story and Kya's sweet wordless reactions.
"I guess Bumi has this one under control," he whispered.
"Mm," she agreed.
Baby Kya giggled at Bumi's story-telling, and he giggled right back with her. They had definitely inherited Aang's infectious happy nature. She smiled as she snuggled into her husband's embrace even more. Katara had never felt so complete and happy in her life. What a wonderful fairytale she was living.
Gotta love a fairytale told by a five-year-old. Hope you enjoyed! Feel free to leave a thought.
Until next time!
