Very nearly all of the Kokiri saw themselves as brothers and sisters. They were all children of the Forest, after all, and all knew the Great Deku Tree to be their Father. But like any large family, the members of the Kokiri were as close or distant to one another as they wished. Many did not consider themselves close to Mido, the self proclaimed boss of the Kokiri, while nearly all considered themselves close to Saria, the girl who spent her days playing her Ocarina in the Sacred Forest Meadow. But there were those in the forest that, for whatever reason, considered themselves very close. The Know it all brothers. The Twins. And the Little Women.
The Little Women were four sisters, who all lived together. The oldest, Margaret (Or Meg, as he sisters liked to call her) was a beautiful girl. She had looked after all three of her sisters since she was very young, and was known to be very protective of them. She was kind and polite, but it was often a point of gossip how greedy she could be. She had often been observed hoarding rupees that other residents of the forest dropped while out playing.
Her younger sister, Jo, was a bit of a tomboy. Hard headed and arrogant, she often spent her days outside with the boys, fishing and even getting into fist fights. Rude, arrogant, and condescending, she loved her sisters above all else.
Beth had always been a sickly child. Most children born in the forest lived healthy, happy lives until they wandered off and were killed by the outside world, but she had been a notable exception. She had always been frail and weak, and for a long time never left their house. Even now that she was older, and had recovered a great deal, she still looked pained and exhausted. Most residents of the forest pitied her greatly.
And then finally, the youngest. Amy the artist. A younger girl who spent her time trying to recreate the beauty of the forest. She was naïve and innocent, even by Kokiri standards. She knew very little of the outside world. So much so that most Kokiri who knew her doubted she knew it even existed.
The day began like many others. The sisters, as they always did, had breakfast around their little wooden table.
"What are you all going to do today?" Meg asked, as she set down her wooden utensils.
"Exploring." Jo said immediately. "I want my own little Sacred Forest Meadow."
"You'll never find a place like that." Amy teased. "Not in a million years."
Jo opened her mouth to retort, but Meg cut her off before she could. "Don't leave the forest." She advised Jo. "You know what will happen."
"I die." Jo said cheerfully, as she chowed down on a biscuit, rather unlike a lady. Meg frowned at her.
"I mean it." Meg said. "Not a step."
"The Lost Woods isn't exactly safe either…" Beth murmured. Jo shook her head.
"It's fine if you know what you're doing." She said. "At the absolute worst you'll end up back at the forest. Just don't go messing with Skull kids and you'll be fine."
When breakfast and ended, the sisters went their separate ways. Beth and Meg wanted to see how the construction on that new treehouse was coming along, while Amy wanted to draw a picture. Jo found herself completely on her own today as she made the climb up to the Lost Woods, and found herself enraptured by the melody. As she had planned to do, she went the wrong way, and found herself in the clearing where the friendly skull kid often stood playing his flute. Instead of the Skull Kid, however, she was surprised to see Fado.
"Oh, hello." Jo said, surprised, as she came to a stop. Fado looked up at her, and smiled vacantly.
"Hello." She said. Her yellow hair was vibrant and beautiful, but something about her seemed rather off. "Funny that you all of all people came today, Jo."
Jo placed a hand on her hip. "Whaddaya mean?" She asked. "Talk sense."
Fado laughed. "Your place is in the Sacred Forest Meadow." She said. "In the temple. That is where you belong. Hee hee."
Jo frowned. "The Sacred Forest Meadow is Saria's spot." She said slowly. "But what's a… Temple…?"
Fado laughed again. It was a surprisingly eerie sound, in the peaceful quiet of the forest.
"He's coming." She said. "The Man who will show you the way to the Temple… you, and your three sisters."
"Man?" Jo repeated. "What man? Talk some sense?"
"He's coming…" Fado repeated. "Coming… to see the Great Deku Tree."
Jo was very unnerved now. She took several steps back, and not willing to admit she was frightened, turned tail and ran. She could feel Fado's giggling laughter reverberating in her eardrums. She hated to admit it, even to herself, but she had never been so frightened in her life
She was so unnerved, in fact, that she decided that she needed to consult the Great Deku Tree. She needed someone to talk to about what had just happened. She needed reassurance that Fado had just been messing with her, that her words meant absolutely nothing.
In order to reach the Great Deku Tree, she needed to cross the entire village. She jumped back down the ramp, landed on her feet, and was already on her way past the store when she was hailed by the rooftop store girl.
"Hey Jo!"
She looked up. The girl was always stopping passerby this way. Jo always thought she liked talking down to people.
"You're not going to see the Great Deku, are you?" The girl said anxiously.
"I am." Jo said cautiously.
"You need to stay away!" The girl said to her. "A man from outside came to visit… He said that he had very important business with the Deku Tree!"
Jo felt her heart leap in her chest. She felt sick. Her knees almost buckled. The Man… the Man that Fado had told her about… he was real.
She barely heard the girl call out her name as she doggedly turned back around and made her way to the Deku Tree. The path to the Tree was unguarded. She made her way down the natural passageway and entered the Great Deku Tree's Grotto.
And there was the Man.
She had never seen one before. Kokiri never aged, and Men never came to the Forest. Yet he was even more terrifying than she could have possibly imagined. Tall and imposing, he was more than twice her height and dressed all in black. He rode atop terrible black horse, that pawed the ground apprehensively, as if it was anxious to get moving again.
"You will not have it." The Great Deku Tree thundered. Jo gasped. The sound hit her ears with a force that made her shirk back in fear and shame, although she was not the one who was being addressed. She had never, not in her life, ever heard the Great Deku Tree be truly angry before.
"Killing you will not get me what I desire." The man said, completely unaffected by the Tree's anger. "The Parasite that I forced into your system will wither you away, slowly but surely. I suppose I must take my anger out on this forest to get what I want."
He turned around. Jo gasped as he looked right at her.
"Starting, I think, with this girl and everyone she loves."
"No!" The Great Deku Tree shouted, this time panicked. "You wouldn't!"
"Give me the Stone." The Man said, turning back around. "Or I promise you that girl will die."
The Tree fell silent. No one spoke, or moved.
"I see you need further convincing." The man said. His head shot back around to Jo, and he raised his hand. She let out a scream as a powerful force, an evil energy surrounded her entire being.
"This girl." He said, smirking. "Will become my loyal servant. This entire forest will become mine if you continue to refuse to give me what is mine."
He kicked his horse, and he was off.
Jo panicked. The instant he was out of sight, she turned around and ran. The Deku Tree shouted at her to stop, but she ran and ran, until she was back in her little wooden house.
"Beth?" She called out, panicked. "Where are you?" She was worried, had been worried, ever since the man had spoken… Out of all of them, Beth was by far the most vulnerable. She was nowhere to be found. Panicked, Jo turned the house upside down, trying to find her. But to no avail.
"Beth!" She cried out. "Beth!"
It was no use. She was nowhere to be found. She collapsed on the ground, sobbing furiously.
"Jo?"
She looked up. Amy was looking at her, rather curiously. Jo quickly wiped away the tears and got to her feet.
"Have you seen Beth?" Jo asked, grabbing her shoulders. A shocked Amy shook her head.
"Let go of me… No!"
"Where is Meg?" Jo demanded. "Where is-"
"Jo?"
Jo stopped. Relief flooded her very being. She stepped outside to see Meg and Beth, holding bags of Deku Nuts.
"What are you doing back so soon?" Meg asked, a little bit surprised.
"Jo?" Beth asked timidly. "Are you okay…?"
"Yes, I…" Jo stopped, shook her head. "No, I…. No I'm not okay. Look… can we talk?"
The girls all stepped into the little wooden house, and over their lunch Jo described all that had happened that day. Fado's words, the man in Black, and the Great Deku Tree's fear. When she had finished there was a stunned silence.
And then Meg spoke.
"Jo." She said sternly. "This isn't a very funny joke."
"Joke?" She repeated, alarmed. "It's not a-"
"Men can't enter the forest." She said, matter of factly. Everyone knows that. If they tried… they would become a Stalfos."
Amy giggled. "Fado is always talking about that." She said. "Stalfos, Stalfos…"
She giggled. Jo jumped, alarmed. It sounded very much like the strange giggle that had come out of Fado's mouth.
Meg frowned at Amy. "Honestly." She said. "We don't need to be trying to scare each other with scary stories…"
"But it's all true!" Jo insisted, slamming her hand on the table. "I wouldn't lie about this!"
Beth sat quietly, her hands folded in her lap. Meg and Jo glared daggers at each other.
"Are you trying to scare us." Meg asked quietly. "For a joke?"
"Of course not." Jo answered. "I would never-"
Beth coughed. Jo gave a small start and stared at her in horror.
"It's okay." Beth said, waving her hand. "It's just a…"
She coughed again. Blood spewed out of her mouth and onto their table. Pools of blood splattered all over their things, covering them in red blemishes. Amy screamed, pulling away from the table in horror. Meg, instinctively, stood up and made her way over to her.
"Beth." She said urgently. "Let's get you outside-"
Beth coughed again, this time raising her hands to her face. Trickles of blood ran through her fingers, as tears welled up in her eyes.
Jo's eyes hardened as Meg tried to comfort their sister. "He did this." She snarled. "The Man in Black…"
Amy gave a small gasp as she stepped out of the house. Within minutes she had returned with the Kokiri Sword.
"I'm going after him." She said. "I'm making him pay for this."
Meg looked up at her, fear in her eyes.
"But Beth…"
"Find medicine for her." She urged. "Take care of her. I'm going to try and break the curse."
And with that she was gone.
Meg stared after her sister, horrified, before she turned back to Beth, who was still violently coughing up blood. "Come on." She urged her. "Let's get you to bed…"
Jo raced off down the path and to the Forest's Entrance. Her greatest fear was that the Man in Black would have already left. But to her surprise he was waiting for her by the Entrance to the Forest.
"Ah." He said, smirking. "The girl."
She swung the Kokiri Sword threateningly. "What have you done to my sister?" She demanded.
"Nothing." He said, still smiling. "That you should concern yourself with."
Jo gritted her teeth in anger.
"I'll kill you!" She snapped. The man looked at her, and chuckled.
"Perhaps." He said. "This will be your fate."
She charged him. She swung the sword at his horse's armor plated side, but it was so thickly protected that it simply bounced off. The horse wasn't even spooked.
The Man in Black adjusted his reins, and the horse slowly made its way out of the Forest Entrance.
"No you don't!" Jo roared, as she threw herself onto the side of the horse. As if struck by lightning, the horse broke out into a vast sprint. Jo screamed out in pain and surprise as she was dragged behind the animal.
The Man in Black was looking back at her was he rode, laughing.
"I like you, Kid!" He said. "You would make a fine Gerudo warrior!"
Jo had no idea how long they rode. It felt like it was for miles. But in the end he reached out a powerful hand and swatted her. She cried as she fell to the ground and rolled several feet before coming to a stop.
She gripped the Kokiri sword and shakily got to her feet. She took several tentative steps towards The Man in Black, who was looking at her with a smug expression on his face.
"I wonder." He said. "How long it's going to take for you to die."
Jo had no idea what he meant, at first. She thought the stiff feelings in her legs and thighs was a result of what she had she just gone through. It was not until she took her fifth step towards him that she realized where she was.
They were outside the forest. For the very first time in her entire life, she was looking at the outside world.
"No…" She whispered, as she stared down at her legs. "No…!"
Her legs were beginning to harden. Her skin was becoming a thick, hard bark no different than that of a tree. She tried to move, but couldn't raise her legs. She could feel little root like tendrils bursting out of her foot and into the ground.
She struggled vainly as the Man in Black watched her writhe and struggle. Her feelings of rage and anger gave way to fear and despair. And then, finally, nothing. She stood there, staring straight ahead. No different than any of the other surrounding trees.
…
The other three sisters were swift to join Jo in death. Beth soon succumbed to her illness. She coughed up so much blood that she turned completely pale, and went limp. A grieving Amy and Meg tried their best to take the body to be buried in the Sacred Forest Meadow… only to be attacked by a Wolfos. Only Amy managed to escape, while her sister was torn to shreds. But Amy was too young to navigate the Forest effectively. She wandered the maze of the Sacred Forest Meadow until her little body, tired, starved, and exhausted, collapsed and succumbed to the elements.
Although these sisters had their lives ended in very different ways, their eternity was spent in each other's company. True to his word Ganondorf took their souls and molded them to his own will. The Four Sisters, to the best of their ability, served him in his battles against the Hero of Time. They were among the first sent to stop him during his assault on the Forest Temple, stealing away the fires that led to the critical center chamber where the Forest Sage was being held. There are many legends in Hyrule, many of which have survived the generations. But the story of the Poe Sisters is an often overlooked side story in the greater tale that is the Legend of the Hero of Time.
…
A/N I really thought that this would be a one shot, but honestly I may as well make an entire series out of making up my own stories about minor Zelda antagonists. I'm really enjoying writing these, and I hope you're enjoying them too. Let me know if you want any character covered in future chapters.
